Nintendo can't be accused of being reactive with the Switch ahead of the fast approaching Holiday season. In a time where sales and demand remain strong, the big N has been lining up a steady flow of varied games to keep the console on the wider gaming public's agenda. There are major first-party titles like Metroid Dread and Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl on the way, along with family-centric offerings like Mario Party Superstars and Big Brain Academy: Brain vs. Brain. Add in Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp and some intriguing third-party contributions, and there's plenty to keep the system in the headlines.
Nintendo's also made a move on Switch pricing by reducing the cost of the standard model, but at present this is only in Europe. It's seemingly an adjustment to account for the upcoming OLED model but also the imbalances caused by currency conversions, in which Europeans were comparably paying significantly more for the hardware than North American consumers. Clearly with that in mind, along with its plans for stock levels, the price cut makes sense — it's possible the prices will remain locked in North America and Japan, but of course we'll keep an eye out for updates.
Overall, with the OLED model on the way Nintendo is setup with three offerings at different price points and all, arguably, targeting specific demographics and needs. The Switch may lag a long way behind the latest systems from Sony and Microsoft from a graphical and power perspective, but it has a huge library, plus pricing and availability on its side. With solid momentum and positive projections coming out of Nintendo, it seems intent on having another strong Holiday season.
While people undoubtedly like virtual cage fights between consoles, we're keeping it civilised here (we're all just gamers of different types, after all) and looking at where each major system stands ahead of the Holidays...
Nintendo Switch Family
Switch Lite - $199USD / £199.99
The Switch Lite, like the 2DS before it, serves a function as a hardy portable-only option and the most affordable member of the Switch family. Its sales flourished in 2020 as availability of the standard model became an issue, but while the smaller budget model has its fans, trends show that it's clearly second choice when the original is on shelves.
Nevertheless it'll likely do just fine, especially with a Pokémon special edition being a great gift option.
Switch - $299USD / £259.99 / €269,99 (after regional price cut)
There's every chance that the standard model will be the best-selling Switch model in the run up to 2022. It offers the full suite of Switch functions at a middle price point that'll likely suit a wide range of players. It wouldn't be surprising if some attractive bundles and deals — targeting the upcoming Black Friday frenzy — push sales of this seasoned model up further.
If Nintendo can maintain supply, it's likely to be another good Winter for the system, especially considering the diverse range of first-party software on the way over the next few months.
Switch OLED Model - $349USD / £309.99
Though there's been much gnashing of teeth over what the OLED isn't, Nintendo knows full well what it is offering with the system and its extra $50 in price — it's the equivalent to XL models in the DS / 3DS era, with a little more luxury and a bigger screen. In any range of technology, it's premium models like this that often shift less units but nonetheless draw in enough eager consumers that they contribute heartily to profits. Though more expensive to produce than the base model, considering the age of the technology in the Switch, the profit margin on these models will no doubt also be a strong point.
The sales figures will be interesting, but we suspect the OLED model will have similar numbers to the Lite.

Sony PlayStation Family
PlayStation 5 - $499USD / £499.99 (standard model) — $399USD / £399.99 (digital model)
A common thread with PS5 and its rival Series X|S is that it'll sell as many as Sony can produce. Sony will be throwing everything it's got at producing stock, banking on existing exclusives and major third-party efforts to maintain the system's desirability. With some reports online that 'scalper' prices are dropping (VGC), however, perhaps supply is starting to catch up.
PlayStation 5 will be a powerhouse in sales, ultimately, especially if Sony can make enough of them.
PlayStation 4 - $299USD approx for standard model
It seems that most are moving on from PS4, unsurprisingly, as it's already sold over 116 million units and led the last generation; its momentum has understandably fallen away. It'll still pick up some limited sales, especially if there are some end-of-gen bundles at tempting prices, but it seems that stock isn't being replenished a great deal in the US market, for example, leaving it largely in the hands of resellers.
Sony wants gamers to buy a PS5, it's just having trouble getting them on shelves.
Microsoft Xbox Family
Xbox Series X|S - $499USD / £499.99 Series X — $299USD / £299.99 Series S
Microsoft's challenge is the same as Sony's — simply manufacture enough systems to meet demand. The scalper market remains hot for the Series X, suggesting that the strategy of aggressive Game Pass expansion — alongside some genuine blockbusters for the Holiday season — is paying off; it may also indicate continuing problems delivering substantial restocks. It looks like Microsoft has been behind Sony in the manufacturing battle, but no doubt will sell as many Series X consoles as it can get into stores.
How many it can make remains the issue. The less expensive Series S, meanwhile, is available more often and is seemingly not flying off shelves, though Microsoft may hope for a similar affect that the Switch Lite enjoyed last year, in which players desperate for upgraded versions of new games will 'settle' for the cheaper model if the premium offering is out of stock.
Xbox One / X
Outperformed by PS4 in the last generation by some distance, the Xbox One family of systems nevertheless worked its way to reasonable overall sales. Like with the PS4 in the current market, outside of some budget and bundle pick-ups the older hardware is now largely overlooked, with stock running down and resellers taking over in some territories.
What shape is Nintendo in as we head into Holiday Season 2021?
Nintendo, as is often the case, is operating in a 'bubble' of sorts, with the hybrid nature of its hardware being far removed from the sizeable home consoles offerings from Microsoft and Sony. The appeal of the Switch remains high, seemingly, with its unique library and family/multiplayer-friendly format still working in its favour.
The standard model, with its EU price cut (and likely bundles and Black Friday deals in North America), remains the likely workhorse of the family in terms of sales. The Lite remains a good option for those uninterested in TV play or seeking an affordable option as a second unit, while the OLED is there for the premium / enthusiast market.
In many respects the battles in stores will be quite separate — on one side Sony and Microsoft will fight for the high-end living room market, while Nintendo targets a broad range of gamers looking for a different experience. Nintendo also continually competes with other smaller entertainment devices like tablets, pushing its game library and features to showcase its capabilities.
In the wider picture Nintendo is likely confident ahead of the Holiday season, at least in terms of hitting its own targets. Multiple major releases that target a broad group of gamers — along with those hardware options and price points to suit different people — should see it through. It may also get extra Holiday gift purchases should Microsoft and Sony continue to struggle with meeting demand, as was the case a year ago, PS5 and Xbox Series X are likely to continue to rapidly sell out.
Let us know in the polls below how you think Nintendo will fare in the next few months.

First is the poll! 100s all round!
On a different note, the switch getting a price cut just means the OLED is a bigger price tag to swallow
Annoying how we get £20 discount in the UK yet Europe gets £40 (€ equivalent).
I just want a ps5 man. 😓
If it wasn't for the stock issues then the ps5 would of come out on top this holiday season, but it's looking like the switch is going to come out on top and I'd wager the switch lite being the cheaper option will be the model with the most sales.
PS5 doesn't exist.
Yeah, Switch is poised to have yet another strong holiday. The holiday/Q4 software lineup is utterly insane with 6(!!) Switch exclusives(Metroid, Mario Party, Pokemon remakes, SMT V, AW 1+2 and Brain Age) releasing.
I will be waiting for a better PS5. I have time until 2023 because of that sweet Spider-Man 2.
There are plenty of PS5s in my country, I just refuse to buy one
Until then the game I really want will be on PS4 as well so there is no need to invest in PS5 now.
The OLED is a joke. My launch model Switch is in PERFECT condition
The Series X is with the same digital/internet requirements like the my One X so I do not need that one as well. Maybe is they release an Offline update and allow Offline/local user creation I might get one.
Sony and Microsoft will sell as many hardware units as they are able to manufacture, since demand well outstrips supply with their consoles.
Switch has consistently sold extremely well, and the holidays are sandwiched between two high-profile Pokemon releases in addition to a bunch of other exclusives, so the hardware numbers should be pretty impressive there as well.
The Switch is € 299 not € 269. @ThomasBW84 (Except in France)
Would have bought a Seriex X or PS5 but their current lack of games is keeping me away.
Besides I'm happy with my Switch/PC combo.
I have a serious back log but I am salivating at this holiday release schedule with Metroid, Pokemon, Mario Rabbids and Advance Wars, and oh yeah, MP Superstars. If only I could stop time to play more of my backlog, I'll never get to Pikmin 3 at this rate
The PS5 is 450 and 360, not 500 and 400. Well, unless Sony have raised the price by fifty/forty quid since launch.
https://metro.co.uk/2020/09/16/ps5-price-450-uk-release-date-november-with-game-pass-equivalent-13283066/?ico=more_text_links
I think the Switch will sell well throughout the holidays, because strangely enough, they have a fairly varied lineup. I am also not buying any new consoles for awhile. I have an Xbox One to play Resident Evil 2 and 3 (best games I have played in a very long time), and a Wii U to play Bayonetta, and most of the Switch library. I've been playing some Switch stuff but I may jump back in for Metroid, Super Monkey Ball, and Shin Megami Tensei V ( which may end up game of the year for me).
I was very close to pulling the trigger on a PS5 a few months ago...then I never found it. But then i learned more about the CMOS issue with the new xbox and playstation, and might wait until there is a significant price drop. Many of the offerings from Sony all look the same, which is highly disappointing, because they took more creative risk with the PS3, and especially the PS2. The new Gran Turismo game is all online basically, and that was sad to see. I'm not sure what Sony is doing. Microsoft, with the original Xbox One wanted an all online console, and had huge backlash, and what's strange is the new Xbox is exactly that, with DRM, and online check ins, and there's been no issue from the consumer.
Nintendo has been resting on their laurels for the better part of 2 years. Right now there's no need to change up the formula, but at some point the consumers (especially U.S. based consumers) will pull back from spending. A consumer may just buy one or no new consoles. And in a way its begun, with the cutting of unemployment benefits, and lots of folks not finding or looking for employment. Its leading to worker shortages, and higher prices on basic stuff. Cars, rent, tvs, food, etc have gone up in price steadily. A reality check is about to happen to most consumers worldwide, and many of these companies, including Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony recognize that. I think we see a downturn starting this fall, and lasting for a very, very long time.
Seems that the inverted-Oreo look is the in-thing lately, Microsoft should release an Xbox where 2 opposite sides are white and the other 2 are black.
@duffmmann I would actually buy that.
My console of choice is Evercade vs
But I all ready have a switch
@sanderev It even is € 299 on the French My Nintendo Store. Only some select stores in France seem to have the lower price, but that is the free market in general. I really don't understand where NintendoLife gets their 269 price from. https://mynintendostore.nintendo.fr/nintendo-switch-with-neon-blue-neon-red-joy-con-controllers.html
My next console will be the series X, just way more value for your bucks compared to a few extra exclusives on Playstation’s side, but with the massive backlog I have on my switch it might take a while.
I just think Nintendo needs 1 or 2 last minute surprises for the holiday season and they will be set.
SMT5, Metroid and Mario Party have my eye. Been gaming for 30+ years. Might finally dip my toe into that little known franchise, Pokemon. Why not!?
Chip shortage is supposedly lasting through 2023 so Switch will probably be fine without any meaningful upgrade. It has 2 big titles around the holiday season (Mario Party and Pokemon) and it's still very easy to get a Switch meanwhile PS5 and Series X are still hard to get hold of.
I'm very happy with my Xbox Series S as a second console to the Switch.
So I WAS planning to buy an OLED model, but now that nintendo had depreciated the second hand price of my current switch, I will wait for the price to drop. Not happy.
With my huge Steam backlog, I'm thinking SteamDeck will be my next big purchase... although considering my Switch backlog is also huge, it might take a while to get to that. PS5 doesn't have any announced exclusives that are of any real interest to me, and there's no point in owning both a Series console AND a gaming PC.
I bought a Switch 1 year ago, My PS5 arrived 2 weeks ago, I won't buy any major console anytime soon, though I am still waiting the TurboGrafX mini (or PCEngine or CoreAnything whatever is the regional name) to be available on a reasonable price(When I last checked the cheapest was 42 000 Yen from amazon japan(323 Euro), which is 3-4 times more expensive than it worth, I rechecked just now, it is $234.99 + $91.73 Shipping & Import Fees on amazon.com (277 Euro) ).... Nevermind, just bought one from french amazon for 109 Euro + 7 Euro shipping
I've been planning to get a Switch Lite because I never use TV mode on my Switch, but I've been waiting for a price cut. If there isn't one by New Years, then I'll just buy it anyway.
I've had a PS5 on my shopping list since around April or so.
It's not something I desperately need, so I haven't been going out of my way to hunt one down. Just leisurely checking stocks every few days.
It's absolutely ridiculous how out of stock they still are, after almost a full year. Scalpers can get smudged, for all I care.
Switch will be the number one console this holiday again I reckon.
Eh, I think the Switch will start to slow down with the lack of a true Pro and PS5 and Xbox Series X picking up steam. I myself would buy a PS5, but I haven't seen enough games I want for it yet (there's a few third parties I want, but I haven't seen the first party games I'm looking for yet).
I’ll get another switch lite in the family for my daughter. Hopefully it gets a price cut soon
UK PS5 and Xbox Series prices don't look right to me. Sure it's a genuine mistake on a Nintendo site 😉
@Bolt_Strike Not until there's enough supply at MSRP. Scalpers are gobbling up the stock right now. Most people are put off by it, so they'll more than likely hang onto their PS4 and/or Xbox One until they can easily find one of the newer ones. Next year could be a possibility, but Nintendo will probably take this holiday season since they have plenty of stock.
Although I would want it to go even lower, I think £249.99 would have kinda sit better between the two other SKUs. But whatever.
Switch isn't going to slow down sales anytime soon. It's available and that's as big a selling point as anything else right now.
PS5 once available will still be a huge success and Microsoft have nothing to worry about as they are increasing the numbers of people playing in their ecosystem and GamePass is a massive success no matter what some might try and say. The fact is that when all sides are doing well then gamers get the best. The whole fanboy thing has always bored me as gaming is about enjoyment and competition breeds quality. Fan boy stuff is nonsense and shows a lack of understanding for what is a fabulous industry.
I will be buying multiple Switch (OLED and standard). Maybe another Lite if there is a nice new cool design.
I don't need the Alienware type consoles from Sony or Microsoft.
I think Nintendo will “win” this year yet again. They’ve got stock available and a good exclusive line-up and I think that will continue to drive unit sales.
If PS5 can generate stock, I think they’ll come close, regardless of the light amount of exclusives they have, and if Halo is strong, Series consoles might have a breakthrough, provided they have stock available. But really, stock regardless, I think the Switch is in a place where Nintendo can just continue with strong sales. I don’t see Nintendo stumbling off the top until mid-generation for PS5/Xbox Series, when the exclusives and stock start to pick up… and that’s when Nintendo can strategically announce their next console. But this is Nintendo, so who knows what logic will befall them?
I would have thought that Sony would drop the price of the PS4 after the PS5's release, but I guess they really do want people to go for the new one. That's a shame, I was hoping to find a PS4 on the cheap so I can play some of the great games of the last gen. I'm kind of skeptical about used consoles, but I guess I don't have much of a choice here.
Somethings fishy about the votes ?
Not really much of a fight. Seems to me they're all sitting in different arenas fighting the crowd.
So, Nintendo IS competing with Sony and Microsoft eh?
Nintendo will have a strong Christmas, this chip shortage is helping restrict sales of both Xbox Series X and PS5 helping keep the Switch out in front...
This looks set to continue going forwards with the shortage not set to be resolved till 2023.
So a small pricedrop and a slightly improved sku along with a varied game line up in the run up to Christmas should keep Nintendo on top...
Don't forget Jan 2022 has Pokemon releasing, so the next six months with the price drop and OLED model will keep the money rolling in I'm sure...
This is all well and good under normal circumstances, but you may have to make an additional list to accommodate scalper pricing.
A Switch OLED (EU) costs more than a PS5 digital (US)? And a regular Switch in Europe now cost $50 less than a PS5 Digital (US)?
That really sucks for you guys, but you guys do have higher minimum wage than most places in America. Thanks for subsidizing the US.
@Snoyflake well still its the object of desire for most gamers i want one
@Deviant-Dork well south and eastern Europe (ex eastern block) got lower minimum wage that most places in US
First and foremost, Switch still does what its Gen 9 "peers" don't - enrich the very gaming hobby with adaptive flexibility without relying on third party devices and internet streams to achieve it. The holiday vicinity lineup (rich enough even without the possibility of another Direct throwing a couple more curveballs at it before winter) and the reported European price cut may well fuel the momentum further. In the context of the pandemic industry strain, only time can tell, but there are few to no reasons not to expect another good year for Switch sales - in fact, the bells on Santa's sleigh may already be the soundtrack to their transition over Wii numbers. The latest official total is almost 90 million and AFAIU that's just Q2.
Software sells hardware.
Nintendo have a Pokemon remake and an Advanced Wars remake for November and December.
XBX has a new Halo and a Forza, but then has Gamepass made the XBX redundant?
PS5 wishes everyone a Merry Christmas and hopes you enjoy celebrating with new games in Q2 of 2022.
Personally I think the Switch could REALLY do with a big original title in November or December to drive sales, but will still do okay if not stellar without it.
The failing Switch won't be able to keep up with the collosi that are the Xbox Series and the PS5. SAD!
Switch will kill it this christmass
I may be in the market for a PS4 pro as the PS5/Series X don’t have any games that will prompt a purchase from me. I’ll get an oled switch when they make a botw2 version. I do want a dock though. Gamepass kinda makes upgrading silly right now. Everything I want to play on PS5 is either cross platform with PS4 or multiplat anyway. All the games are coming out on Nintendo Switch for me this year. Plus it really doesn’t help that sony and ms are pushing games to pc. I’m considering skipping the Ps5 altogether at this point (it’s only the marvel games that have me curious about ps5). I only want a series x because it has the same bc as a xbox one and I don’t have a one x. If I’d bought an one x I’d just buy 3 years of game pass and call it even.
I put that I would buy the OLED, but I have my doubts that I will be able to get one….ditto that for the other systems.
Does anyone know if these chip/material shortages contribute to cartridge/physical game manufacturing? I think it would be interesting if Nintendo is purposely keeping many games close to their chest that otherwise would be ready to launch, simply because of their desire to launch their big first-party titles physically.
And yes, I still intend on purchasing an OLED Switch this year, if I can find it at MSRP. I love playing in handheld mode and actually enjoy tabletop mode as well, which is an under appreciated way to play.
However, if an Animal Crossing model becomes available again at MSRP, then that might be a tough choice.....
Nintendo will dominate the market for the next two years, and this price cut, it seems it comes due to balance prices accross all major regions. I'll get an OLED next year, will start saving for it.
@Ulysses At least in North America, the Animal Crossing Switch has been in stock pretty consistently.
I’d love to get my hands on a PS5 at some point, but I’m in no hurry until some more of their franchises are available. I absolutely love the portability of the Switch. I’ll buy multi platform games on the Switch just for the portability. It’s like MP3’s being worse quality than a CD, but their convenience makes them most people’s choice.
Switch Lite is the Switch for me, been mainly gaming on the Switch since I bought one. Still enjoy my PS4 and I'll want a PS5 for Elden Ring, but it's a great little console.
Why no price for Xbox one, one x?
I already have the switch and series s
I lost all interest in Xbox and Playstation last generation, so I have zero interest in the new Xbox or PS
However the Steam Deck has my attention.
I’m getting the OLED but I’m actually more excited for the Evercade Vs. console in November
Switch 2020 holiday lineup:
> Hyrule Warriors Age of Calamity
> Pikmin 3 DX
> Mario Kart Live
Holiday sales: 11.4 million units
Switch 2021 holiday lineup:
> Pokemon Brilliant Diamond/Shining Pearl
> Mario Party Superstars
> Metroid Dread
> Big Brain Academy
> Advance Wars Reboot Camp
There is no universe where the Switch isn't an absolutely massive seller this holiday quarter. Pokemon Diamond/Pearl remake alone will comfortably outperform Nintendo's entire 2020 holiday lineup combined.
I'm just waiting to see what Anbernic is up to 😉 🎮
I just ordered the 24 month deal from Walmart to get Xbox series X with 2 years of gamepass. It's the only easy way to get XSX right now, plus it will save me money because I won't buy physical editions of the games I can play on gamepass. I'm excited to try all the 120fps games on XSX! My main hope as a Nintendo fan is that they release something that can output 120fps and load quickly like PS5, PC, and XSX. Instead of Nintendo 64, it could be the Nintendo 120 and all games would run at 120hz!
Not planning on buying any consoles these holidays since I already have the Switch, PS5, Series X trinity. It'll be all about the software purchases instead.
I'm thinking of getting a PS5 but 1) it's a big ugly machine. 2) it is never available in the shop. 3) I can play almost all the good games on my PS4 for less money. 4) I would need a new TV to notice a difference in resolution between PS4 and PS5. I might wait for a PS5 slim
I have a gaming PC that can play basically anything PS5 or XboxX can so I just have little to no reason to buy either. The small handful of exclusives that Sony and MS have is dwindling all the time and both machines offer an extremely similar gaming experience to each other and little to nothing that my PC can't do.
YES, the PC cost far more and for a LOT of gamers it's just not an option. I got very lucky to get a PC when I did at the price point I did.
And then I have the Switch. It has a metric crapton of some of the best 1st party content around, and sorry, I don't even consider that an opinion, it's backed up by sales numbers. Pokemon, Mario, Fire Emblem, Xenoblade, Metroid, Zelda, Animal Crossing, and many more Nintendo exclusive series that consistently do well and I personally consistently enjoy as well.
And then the Switch is a Switch - it's a hybrid platform. I can pick it up and take it with me anywhere I feel like bringing it or I can set it back on the dock and keep playing. I love that design. It's simple brilliance.
Simply put, Nintendo does what Sony and Microsoft don't. I can barely see the difference between PS5 and XboxX. It's like the difference between a Ford Fusion and a Toyota Camery. They're both sedans of similar sizes and do almost the exact same thing with little to nothing beyond appearance meaningfully different between them. Nintendo Switch is the Tesla sitting next to that Ford and Toyota. Sure, maybe what it offers isn't what you're looking for. But at least it's something different and not just another cookie cutter machine.
The only machine I really see as even worth considering aside from Switch and PC(for those who can afford a PC anyway) is the Steamdeck. But that's far more expensive than a Switch, and it's Valve. I seriously do not trust Valve to continue to support the device long term. And even if it does end up getting that long term support, to be honest, most games I play on PC, I play with keyboard and mouse because they're games like Civ 6, Cities Skylines and SW Empire at War with mods. All games that don't play as comfortably, or even at all, with a controller. But that's mostly a matter of personal taste. For a lot of folks the Steamdeck is gonna be a lot cooler. Though at that price point I still don't think it's a good buy.
I'm looking forward to picking up the Switch OLED to replace my launch system. I'll get a PS5 down the road, as I skipped PS4. Sony has always been secondary to Nintendo for me. I usually only end up playing a handful of titles on each system. With the chip shortage, I probably won't be able to get a PS5 for a year or more. I'm in no rush. I would still end up playing Switch more, as I love Nintendo 1st party games and Switch is far more convenient.
When I saw the switch oled model with no 4K upscale technology no cpu boost just better screen I took the money I had kept to buy the « switch pro » and bought a Xbox series s instead and I have a lot of fun with my new console and with gamepass I played through a lot of cool games that would have cost me way more money on switch with bad fps and ugly graphics trust me if you want a console to play at home don’t buy a switch oled buy a series s instead you won’t regret it.
@Arkay Switch + PC combo is the best yes. My combo too.
Why would you need a Series X when 100% of the games comes to PC same day?
Also. Almost all third party "exclusives" on PS5 is coming to PC same day.
PS5 1st party games will come to PC x amount of time after release.
My 2 Gaming PC's replaced both PS5 and Series X.
I'll probably snatch an OLED model if I can and a series X/S if there's stock. For the big boys when it comes to value Xbox (w/ Gamepass) IMO wins out so I'll probably skip PlayStation this gen. Though I have a gaming PC it's still a nice experience hooking up a home console in the living room and slouch on the couch.
Xbox series X plus game pass is my go to now. I'll be getting Metroid and Triangle project as well though. The option to play a game and delete it if I don't like it is nice.
As impressive as these polls look for nintendo, I would keep in mind the audience of nintendolife (predominantly Nintendo enthusiests) and know these polls are a means of promoting site engagement rather than a representation of the gaming market as a whole.
Even though i voted
Had a PS5 since day 1, and I have a Switch OLED on pre-order. I just want an Xbox Series X. Until I find a Series X, I guess my One X will have to do. I can't really complain though, PS5 and Switch will keep me busy for a long time.
Oled needs to go down to €299 now the gap is way to big with the standard version just for a lil bit bigger screen.
I rather ask the question, are PS5 and Xbox Series X [not Series S] actually contender for this holiday season?
A lot of PS5 (exclusive) titles seem to be coming 2022 (and I doubt it's january, or else that would have been already set in stone) and both of the consoles are actually MIA (yes you can camp out at onlinestore pages, but the big bucks are being made with comodity sales, the reason I skipped so far on the PS5, is that I can't easily pick one up).
Even the PS4 or Xbox One don't seem to be readily available (albeit I did a quick search).
I would wager the price drop in the face of rising prices for other electronics will probably seal the deal for a lot of holdouts and the library with the added Metroid Dread in autumn will probably also seal the deal and I anticipate a lot of "Christmas Bunbles".
@Lemmy_the_Koopa I've actually still yet to see a PS5 in a normal store. Or even a normal webshop. I've seen many XBOX Series S consoles, and a tiny amount of XBOX Series X.
Mostly it's webshops(!) from scalpers that ask 2-3x the price for these consoles. Which I refuse to pay.
@sanderev The same, I sometimes see an announcement of something in stock, but it is already sold out by the time I read and want to make up my mind if I actually want to buy one... and yeah, I hope the scalpers will in the end loose a lot of money, when the PS5 comes widely available.
@Arkay The XBox Series X is fully backwards compatible. So you have a huge library of games right out of the bat.
I bought a Series X end last year when a local store was lucky to get a small batch of them, so immediately snatched one up.
My entire catalog of owned games from previous XBox One X and XB360 were instantly available to me. I could just migrate it all over, including save game data.
The switch will crush it this Christmas building on the success of previous years. Hardware supply for Xbox and Playstation will seriously hinder sales. I have series X from launch and cannot recommend it enough though. I will probably get the OLED switch next year sometime unless another model releases. One thing I will definitely be doing is increasing storage for all systems.
For older gamers, gaming is not an expensive pastime. A new PlayStation, Xbox and Oled Switch together cost less than a good set of golf clubs.
So owning two consoles is not expensive. They are not like Smartphones that get updated every year.
The Switch is half the price of the Xbox and PS, so I would expect it to sell more, and because the Lite carries the Switch name, this boosts the sales figures. Also consoles are not exclusive, I guess many Xbox and PS owners have Switches as well. So any comparison regarding sales is flawed.
But graphical and power perspective is lacking, (as this article said), in the Switch. The solution may no longer be a Switch Pro, but gamers owning two consoles.
I have one Switch but would like to play some games as they were made to be played and not as they have to be played because of the lack of graphical and power perspective of the Switch. So I should buy a PS, and have the best of both worlds.
If I do that then my yearly budget for games will be shared between Nintendo and Sony, rather than it all go to Nintendo. Game sales must be more of a concern than console sales in the future.
None of them. I have a Switch for Nintendo games, an Xbox Series X, since I like to play Forza and Halo on my TV, and PC for everything else. I don't care for most of the PS5 games. The few Sony games I am interested in (Horizon Forbidden West and Kena) both are making their way to PC as well, so there's no need for me to get a PS5.
Really glad I didn't listen to the fanboys on social media and grabbed a Series X day one, before it got extremely scarce. The whole narrative of "Xbox Series X will always be in stock cuz no one's buying em!" Was complete BS. Hilarious seeing those same folks now raging at Microsoft for not making enough consoles.
I already have a switch, so I won't be getting any of these. HOWEVER, I iwill probably get a ps5 as A. I would like to play ratchet & clank + spider man and B. xbox games can be played on pc, and I already have a pc.
We sold our V1 switch in June, and went the whole summer without a console😢. I have the OLED ordered, even better that I got it for £278 with discount.
I also managed to order the PS5 on impulse last month with Ratchet and Clank, it will be the kids surprise Christmas present, they’re going to be elated! - I can’t lie, I’m little excited to check it out myself😆, cant wait to pick up Miles Morales and SFV, games I’ve always wanted to play.
I usually buy or upgrade some game system every year and have always played both portable and console. I already have a launch switch, a pokemon lite switch and then bought the wife an AC bundle last xmas (to get her off my launch model)…so I would have gone for a pro all the way but OLED isn’t too enticing. I think with three SKUs and better availability the Switch will win the holidays again.
I traded my ps4 for a pro holiday of 18 and still have a huge backlog….I wouldn’t mind a ps5 but haven't seen one at retail all year….eventually I will get one but man they are bulky, not a fan of the design. Right now its just a superior ps4 player but when theres more next gen games I’ll want one.
I really like M$ direction this generation. I think if you are gaming on a budget and don’t collect media then Series S with game pass is a great deal. $300 for a next gen x86 box and $15 a month for a library of 4 generations of xbox (and pc and cloud/droid) games is a deal. I think the S will pick up steam as regular stock levels increase and more next gen games make it to gamepass.
Had a Switch since launch, and (much like any Nintendo console), it always has been and always will be my go to console.
Got an Xbox Series X last Christmas and though it doesn't get as much play as it should, as like many on here, I have a wife and 2 children with a 3rd on the way in December, I think it's a great piece of kit. One thing I wish every console now had as well as off screen play like the Wii U or Switch, is Quick Resume as OMG that is an incredible feature.
I got a PS5 yesterday from VERY to be delivered at the end of the month. I was thinking about getting a PS4 so I could play a few exclusives that I never played, but TBH, they were nearly £300 for a standard, 500GB console with a cheap game, so I figured I might as well just pay a bit more and get a PS5. Got the console, and PS5 versions of Ghost Of Tsushima Directors Cut and Sackboy for £540. Thing is, the other games that caught my eye in the first place are PS4 games, so I'm not expecting the PS5 to be used as a PS5 until it starts getting games that I want that aren't available on the PS4.
People often comment that only those who play handheld will benefit from the OLED, but that is the opposite of how I feel. I pre-ordered it because I want to play more handheld... always been a bit bothered by the bezel, audio, and screen quality of the switch. I'm hoping the OLED doesn't disappoint! I just wish they hadn't price dropped the switch before I posted it for sale!
I thought this was a Nintendo-centric site, maybe that explains why so many voted for no consoles to buy. I mean what's wrong with you people? I've never seen so much enthusiasm for nothing in these polls before, not since E3 2015 at least.
