I don't like the idea of outsourcing core human creativity to ML models - you'll get something which is perhaps a convincing and appealing imitation, but it won't be directly informed by human experience.
However, at the same time I also find the idea of using AI (or other, non-ML algorithms) to dynamically generate new content in a game, beyond what human developers would be able to generate manually, to be somewhat appealing. For example giving each NPC a unique personality and backstory. Or making it so that you can enter every building in a huge city. Or wander off the edge of the regular map, or into new and mysterious dungeon levels. Basically AI-enhanced roguelikes.
@AllBLK Good point, but I think it's just in fun (for NintendoLife at least), like calling the Steam Machine a "GabeCube". Also it's interesting to see how ideas evolve over time. I always thought Sony's PS Move was a mostly useless ripoff of the WiiMote, but then I saw someone using two of them with Media Molecule's amazing Dreams to sculpt a video game in real time. Dreams is one of the most incredible pieces of software on the PS4, and a killer app (maybe the only one) for PSVR + PS Move.
PS5 is a great console and an excellent value at $350 (everyone would import from Japan if it weren't region-locked!) but I think the Switch 2 (like the original Switch) will win in Japan because of portability. (Physical media on Switch vs. PS5 digital edition might also be an issue, though of course you can add a PS5 disc drive for $80.)
PSP sold more units in Japan than the original PlayStation, and wasn't far behind the PS2.
@ElkinFencer10 Seems like third party (and several first party) "exclusives" on PS5 are mostly "console/timed" exclusives, but it was still nice to be able to play FF16 and FF7 Rebirth on day 1. There are some titles remaining though like Astro Bot, Ghost of Yotei, Death Stranding 2, Demon's Souls. I understand the business reasons for launching many games on both PS4 and PS5 (particularly with the latter launching during the pandemic and associated supply chain issues) and then later on Windows, but it does take some of the wind out of PS5's sails. At the end of the day though, it's all about having fun playing games on whatever system(s) you are fortunate enough to have.
@Medic_alert Sony sometimes pushes the technology envelope at the expense of price, but the PS5 Pro is a bargain compared to the PS3's 60GB launch model (US $599, equivalent to about $960 today.) Though PS3 launched with full hardware backward compatibility with PS2, and was priced lower than many stand-alone Blu-ray players.
UK is getting some great new games like Donkey Kong Country Returns, Red Dead Redemption, Dark Souls, Minecraft, Lego Star Wars, Tony Hawk, and Broken Sword.
@Drew250 I was sure this was a Playdate game, but I guess it's a Panic game that looks like it was developed for Playdate. It is still a terrific game though.
@Fiergala Oh, like the external USB drive support on the Wii U? That was useful given the tiny internal storage (8GB on the basic model and 32GB on Wii U Deluxe), as well as the small capacity of SD cards at the time and the limitation that you couldn't actually run games off SD card storage. PS4 and PS5 also support external SSDs (only PS4 games will run directly off external storage, but you can swap drives between consoles which is nice). But none of these systems are really portable or handheld like Switch 2.
When the update went live I tried starting up Crypt of the NecroDancer and, lo and behold, it no longer crashed! Glad that Portal 2 is now working as well.
Iwata is missed. He seemed to energize Nintendo, and really communicated the charm, creativity, and fun of gaming to an industry that sometimes forgets why it exists. I still have his gold pants Mii on my 3DS. The Wii U wasn't a success itself, but its multi-screen and asymmetric gameplay were innovative, and most of its great games ended up on Switch.
@Twilite9 I still miss Chaos Rings (1 and 2), Infinity Blade, and Canabalt. And the iPad version of Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions. And Space Invaders: Infinity Gene. Someday Square Enix needs to bring back Song Summoner. I played Fantasian on Apple Arcade first before it was released for Switch. It's probably good that third-party exclusives are usually time-limited, so you can (eventually) play on whatever platform you like. Speaking of which, now that we have Patapon (fever!) for Switch, I want LocoRoco (all the versions) ... and Rolando...
LRG is kind of a scam it seems, but nonetheless I still have several of their games just to have a physical edition and/or to manifest a playasia version.
I like gunvolt and for some reason acquired the striker pack as well, but it only has the first two games, though it includes ova and drama discs. Are they teasing us with that box shot though if this is just a download version?
@Banjo- How do you play GameCube games on Wii U? That would be a game changer for me due to the HDMI output (assuming I didn't need custom firmware or the defunct Wii U eShop?)
There is a nice handheld version of Katamari that plays well on the PSVita with its symmetric analog sticks. There's also a Katamari game on Apple Arcade.
Wii U (deluxe in particular) had poor availability at launch (online preorders sold out quickly), and it was resold at high markup during its launch window.
@iamthelibrarian ps4 had decent launch window availability in stores and online; it was still available on amazon as a preorder the night before launch; ps5 was hard to find but also launched in 2020 with covid-related supply chain issues.
Oh Infinity Strash, does anyone else own that game? I like it. I'm sure most people are hyped for PowerWash Simulator though. Shame that FoamStars isn't on the list.
Great collection though still missing Final Fantasy 13, 14, and 16. 13 is an underrated classic with some nice sequels, 14 is a fantastic MMO (and includes a generous free trial with years worth of content), and I've enjoyed 16 on PS5. I'd also like to see Square Enix revive 11, their first FF MMO and a game that has been running for 20+ years, on consoles as well (ideally with a discounted subscription for 14 players.)
@TheBoilerman PlayStation launches until PS5, which launched in 2020 when there were supply chain issues related to covid. PS4 and PS4 pro were smooth launches. PS5 pro was relatively easy to get but scalpers hoarded the disc drives.
Tiny physical game cards that you can play offline, immediately, without downloading gigabytes of data have been a great feature of Nintendo handhelds from Game Boy to Switch 1. (Not to mention PSVita/TV on the Sony side.) Transferring an offline game to a new system (yours or someone else's) was seamless and usually required no immediate downloads.
@stache13 You should find a friend who has a PS5 – they have pretty good games, many of which are not currently available on Nintendo consoles. For that matter the same is true for Xbox and PC.
PS5 is obviously a terrific console which will play most cross-platform titles (Cyberpunk 2077, Elden Ring, etc.) better than the Switch 2 will. And it already plays Final Fantasy 14/15 (PS4 version, not merely pocket version)/16/7 Rebirth, Baldur's Gate 3, Metaphor: ReFantazio, Clair Obscur, and many games that aren't yet on Switch 2. And you can get it for a lower price than Switch 2 or even many PC GPU cards. And it's easy to find a PS5 at list price in a store or online.
But it isn't exactly portable or handheld (remote play and PS Portal notwithstanding.)
(Though maybe the Switch 2 portability should have an asterisk due to 2-hour battery life.)
Does that include the units "sold" and immediately relisted at marked-up prices?
Hopefully they will keep pumping stock into the channel so that availability improves, but I asked a local retailer how many Switch 2 consoles they got this week and the answer was six.
IIRC the PS4 launch was smoother in terms of being able to purchase consoles at list price. The Switch 2 launch seems more like the PS5 launch in terms of availability at list price, though Nintendo does seem to have delivered more systems per week so far.
@Juanblue85 Day one patches are a thing, but I have played many games offline with just the game card. It's a really useful feature, especially for a handheld which may not always be connected to wi-fi.
@joeyflannel Switch always reminded me a bit of PS Vita/TV. Though the Vita launched with an OLED display and unusual features like a rear touch panel and 3G cellular.

SteamCube. Definitely needs a handle and a purple edition though to become a full "GabeCube".
