Re: "We Would Rather Cut Off Our Own Arms" - Demonschool Studio Necrosoft Lets You Know What It Thinks About Using AI

I don't like the idea of outsourcing core human creativity to ML models - you'll get something which is perhaps a convincing and appealing imitation, but it won't be directly informed by human experience.

However, at the same time I also find the idea of using AI (or other, non-ML algorithms) to dynamically generate new content in a game, beyond what human developers would be able to generate manually, to be somewhat appealing. For example giving each NPC a unique personality and backstory. Or making it so that you can enter every building in a huge city. Or wander off the edge of the regular map, or into new and mysterious dungeon levels. Basically AI-enhanced roguelikes.

@AllBLK Good point, but I think it's just in fun (for NintendoLife at least), like calling the Steam Machine a "GabeCube". Also it's interesting to see how ideas evolve over time. I always thought Sony's PS Move was a mostly useless ripoff of the WiiMote, but then I saw someone using two of them with Media Molecule's amazing Dreams to sculpt a video game in real time. Dreams is one of the most incredible pieces of software on the PS4, and a killer app (maybe the only one) for PSVR + PS Move.

PS5 is a great console and an excellent value at $350 (everyone would import from Japan if it weren't region-locked!) but I think the Switch 2 (like the original Switch) will win in Japan because of portability. (Physical media on Switch vs. PS5 digital edition might also be an issue, though of course you can add a PS5 disc drive for $80.)

PSP sold more units in Japan than the original PlayStation, and wasn't far behind the PS2.

Re: Xbox Reiterates Its Support For Switch 2

@ElkinFencer10 Seems like third party (and several first party) "exclusives" on PS5 are mostly "console/timed" exclusives, but it was still nice to be able to play FF16 and FF7 Rebirth on day 1. There are some titles remaining though like Astro Bot, Ghost of Yotei, Death Stranding 2, Demon's Souls. I understand the business reasons for launching many games on both PS4 and PS5 (particularly with the latter launching during the pandemic and associated supply chain issues) and then later on Windows, but it does take some of the wind out of PS5's sails. At the end of the day though, it's all about having fun playing games on whatever system(s) you are fortunate enough to have.

Re: More Switch Games Reportedly Receive Switch 2 Compatibility Fixes

@Fiergala Oh, like the external USB drive support on the Wii U? That was useful given the tiny internal storage (8GB on the basic model and 32GB on Wii U Deluxe), as well as the small capacity of SD cards at the time and the limitation that you couldn't actually run games off SD card storage. PS4 and PS5 also support external SSDs (only PS4 games will run directly off external storage, but you can swap drives between consoles which is nice). But none of these systems are really portable or handheld like Switch 2.

@Twilite9 I still miss Chaos Rings (1 and 2), Infinity Blade, and Canabalt. And the iPad version of Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions. And Space Invaders: Infinity Gene. Someday Square Enix needs to bring back Song Summoner. I played Fantasian on Apple Arcade first before it was released for Switch. It's probably good that third-party exclusives are usually time-limited, so you can (eventually) play on whatever platform you like. Speaking of which, now that we have Patapon (fever!) for Switch, I want LocoRoco (all the versions) ... and Rolando...

Re: Here Are The Square Enix Switch Games You Can Play On Switch 2 Right Now

Great collection though still missing Final Fantasy 13, 14, and 16. 13 is an underrated classic with some nice sequels, 14 is a fantastic MMO (and includes a generous free trial with years worth of content), and I've enjoyed 16 on PS5. I'd also like to see Square Enix revive 11, their first FF MMO and a game that has been running for 20+ years, on consoles as well (ideally with a discounted subscription for 14 players.)

Re: Publishers Are "Thanking" Nintendo For Game-Key Cards On Switch 2

blecch

Tiny physical game cards that you can play offline, immediately, without downloading gigabytes of data have been a great feature of Nintendo handhelds from Game Boy to Switch 1. (Not to mention PSVita/TV on the Sony side.) Transferring an offline game to a new system (yours or someone else's) was seamless and usually required no immediate downloads.

I will miss you, game cards.

Re: As Switch 2 Breaks Records Worldwide, Sony Reminds Us That PS5 Still Exists

blecch

PS5 is obviously a terrific console which will play most cross-platform titles (Cyberpunk 2077, Elden Ring, etc.) better than the Switch 2 will. And it already plays Final Fantasy 14/15 (PS4 version, not merely pocket version)/16/7 Rebirth, Baldur's Gate 3, Metaphor: ReFantazio, Clair Obscur, and many games that aren't yet on Switch 2. And you can get it for a lower price than Switch 2 or even many PC GPU cards. And it's easy to find a PS5 at list price in a store or online.

But it isn't exactly portable or handheld (remote play and PS Portal notwithstanding.)

(Though maybe the Switch 2 portability should have an asterisk due to 2-hour battery life.)

Re: Switch 2 Sets "All-Time" Launch Record For Video Game Hardware In The US

blecch

Does that include the units "sold" and immediately relisted at marked-up prices?

Hopefully they will keep pumping stock into the channel so that availability improves, but I asked a local retailer how many Switch 2 consoles they got this week and the answer was six.

IIRC the PS4 launch was smoother in terms of being able to purchase consoles at list price. The Switch 2 launch seems more like the PS5 launch in terms of availability at list price, though Nintendo does seem to have delivered more systems per week so far.
