Re: The Nintendo Direct Presentation For E3 2019 Will Be About 40 Minutes

@construx Not buying a Switch for the Nintendo exclusives?

Switch may be a decent platform for playing indie games, mobile ports, and last-gen cross-platform games on the go, but Nintendo exclusives are the games that bring most people to the Switch party.

Though it's still nice to have occasional timed third-party exclusives like Octopath and Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 - third party exclusives being pretty unusual in general these days.

@60frames-please

Ah, the PS2 co-op ARPGs, were great fun: Dark Alliance 1/2, Champions of/Return to Norrath, Justice League Heroes, X-Men Legends 1/2, Marvel Ultimate Alliance 1/2 ...

And unlike Diablo 3's otherwise excellent couch co-op, they featured SPLIT SCREEN INVENTORY so two players could do their loot and skill management simultaneously. I'm kind of shocked that Blizzard ignored this obvious issue.

But MUA3 is coming out first on Switch!

Re: Feature: Best Game Boy Games

@RadioHedgeFund PS2 is an excellent system (original home of Final Fantasy X for example) but it doesn't fit in your pocket or run forever on AA batteries like the GBC!! Also doesn't play Mario/Zelda/Pokémon/etc..

Re: Talking Point: Why Is It So Hard To Buy A Switch Dock Set?

blecch

I ordered one as soon as it came out via amazon.co.jp.

Ended up being quicker and cheaper than buying it locally, and it also came in a nifty box. The power supply works fine in the US but you need a plug adapter or alternate USB C power supply for the UK.

Oddly enough I eventually saw a bunch of them on shelves even when the Switch itself wasn't available, and I also saw returns apparently from people who bought the dock thinking it was a great deal on the full console! ;-(

@Dellybelly "Play your games you enjoy on platform you enjoy, no need to make it into a war"
^This – everyone's on Team Video Games, and game lovers everywhere win!

I'm really glad to see the Switch succeed as it means that:
1) Nintendo will continue to make interesting, quirky hardware consoles after the Wii U
2) Handheld consoles will continue to be made even in the face of competition from smartphones and the end of the PSVita
3) Nintendo will continue making great AAA console games (even when they are making some smartphone games) and
4) There is real competition so that Sony can't become lazy and complacent
5) Physical game releases aren't dead yet
6) Maybe we'll get Netflix on it someday

Re: Feature: The 50 Best Nintendo 3DS Games Of All Time - Zelda, Pokémon, Animal Crossing And More

blecch

Great system, and excellent games. Personally I rank Bravely Default as one of my all-time favorites, basically a Final Fantasy for 3DS in all but name. Animal Crossing and Fire Emblem deserve their high placement, ruled my life for months, and are my most anticipated new games on Switch.

My #1 3DS game though? Streetpass Mii Plaza. I've collected thousands of Miis (not to mention the Spotpass Miis like Iwata ;_; Aonuma and Reggie) and played the minigames for probably hundreds of hours. I miss Streetpass on the Switch.

Re: Nintendo Has “Nothing New” To Announce For 3DS In Terms Of First-Party Game Releases

blecch

3DS is a great system, although I am not entirely opposed to Nintendo going all-in on Switch as a handheld platform.

Some of the cool features that the 3DS had that I miss on the Switch: Lenticular 3D. 3D screenshots (and low-res photos.) Dual Screens. Stylus. Streetpass support in games. Streetpass Mii Plaza (and all of the surprisingly fun Streetpass minigames.) Gold-pants Mii characters from Nintendo (like Iwata, Aonuma, and Reggie.) Miiverse. Swapnote/Letter Box. 3D notes. Flipnote Studio 3D. Virtual Console. DSi backward compatibility. Web browser. Netflix. Nintendo Video. Hardware Wi-Fi switch and LED. Nintendo Zones (and Streetpass Relay.) Download kiosks. Download Play (local multiplayer from a single game cartridge.) Hardware volume slider. Clamshell design.Themes. 3DS Sound recorder/player. AR cards in the box. Physical rewards from Club Nintendo.

Regarding lifetime hardware sales the 3DS may yet beat the PSP.

Handheld systems are great and I greatly prefer them to smartphones for gaming simply because they have physical buttons and controls and are designed with gaming as the primary application.

Re: Nintendo's Mobile Games Raked In $85 Million During The First Quarter Of 2019

blecch

@Desrever I am also unenthusiastic about p2w, and that sort of thing has kept me away from FEH.

Non-mobile Animal Crossing games really got play-and-wait right, precisely because you cannot accelerate time with microtransactions - you have to either wait or adjust the system clock, which could incur the wrath of Mr. Resetti! (Of course I have never done so, so I cannot say for sure.)

Re: Nintendo's Mobile Games Raked In $85 Million During The First Quarter Of 2019

blecch

The only Nintendo mobile title that I ever played on a regular basis was Miitomo, and they shut it down. That was kind of a shame, because it had a clever question and answer feature that reminded me a bit of the Everybody Votes Channel on the Wii. Nintendo has come up with some interesting online interaction models. I miss MiiVerse and StreetPass. And PictoChat. And I never get Swapnote letters from Nikki anymore. ;-(

I have mixed feelings about Nintendo focusing on mobile games, as I have minimal interest in "free to play" games with annoying mobile-style monetization schemes.

Re: Video: Here's Your First Proper Look At Dragon Quest XI S Running On Switch

blecch

May not look as great as the PS4 version but it's nice to have a "real" port of the full 3D version rather than a "mobile" version (ahem, FFXV).

Though I'm actually looking forward to rejoining Sylvando and company in 2D, since the 3DS version was never localized in English!!

@Dijita Oh yeah I also wish we could transfer saves from PS4!

Re: Final Fantasy XIV Director Still Wants The Game On Switch, Talks With Nintendo Are Ongoing

blecch

@16bitSwitch Usually teaming up with other players is one of the things that makes MMOs interesting. It's a bummer if you have to leave in the middle of an instance, but FFXIV's Duty Finder at least can automatically replace people who leave. It's also not uncommon for people to go AFK for a minute to answer the door, use the restroom, etc.. Also people get disconnected from the game for various reasons and have to log in again.

Version 5.0 will include the Trust system to allow NPCs to help you, which may allow you to play the whole game as a solo experience if you want to. Why might you want to? Because it's actually actually a pretty good Final Fantasy game even without the MMO part.

Re: Final Fantasy XIV Director Still Wants The Game On Switch, Talks With Nintendo Are Ongoing

blecch

Final Fantasy XIV is an excellent game, but remember that Square Enix discontinued the PS3 version of FFXIV after Patch 4.0, citing technical limitations of the PS3 as a reason for doing so.

On the other hand, check out FFXIV on the PSVita via Remote Play:

(Note: the UI is adjustable so you can make it much larger and more legible than in these pictures.)

Re: Random: Sony's PS4 State Of Play Presentation Made 'Nintendo Direct' Trend On Twitter

blecch

Move is largely useless as far as I can tell - except for Dreams!

It's easy to forget that the PlayStation 2 did actually support motion control gaming via the PS Eye, which was cool!! Though Microsoft's Kinect improved on the PS Eye by adding depth sensing. PS Eye (and EyeToy on the PSP) also did AR. I still think games like Just Dance (etc.) are vastly superior on Kinect vs. WiiMote.

Instead of Move I would have preferred that Sony keep working on motion controls and AR with the PS Eye.

Re: Talking Point: What Does Google's Stadia Mean For Nintendo And The Future Of Gaming?

blecch

"Google is the only company with the infrastructure to do this."
Well, besides Sony (PlayStation Now) and Microsoft (xCloud). And Amazon, of course.

The speed of light thing is a problem though with interactive games that are latency sensitive (such as fighting games.) The usual way to fix it is to move closer to the player, and it's hard to beat being in the same room or at arm's length.

Re: Google Reveals Stadia, Its Vision Of A Cloud Gaming Future

blecch

Exclusives are a big deal for platforms; but PS Now has God of War, Ratchet & Clank, Last of Us, Uncharted, etc. and still hasn't seen much uptake as far as I can tell.

@Rhaoulos Regarding the controller, I actually prefer symmetrical analog sticks, as seen on Nintendo's Classic Controller Pro and the Wii U Pro controller. For PlayStation controllers... I think the DualShock 3 may be my favorite, since it is reasonably comfortable for me to hold and has good battery life (vs. the abysmal battery life on the DS4. I also rarely use the DS4 touchpad, and when I do it's usually by mistake.) I note the shock-less version of the DS3, aka the "we took out rumble due to a lawsuit" SixAxis had amazing battery life and was also lighter and interestingly translucent, so you could see where the missing rumble mechanism was supposed to go.

Re: Google Reveals Stadia, Its Vision Of A Cloud Gaming Future

blecch

Game streaming seems to be a perpetual "future technology" but now that phones and tablets are nearly as powerful as some consoles (or is it the other way around?) and network service is better maybe it is a better time for it.

Also given that Google is behind it maybe it will be more successful than OnLive, Gaikai, and PlayStation Now. PlayStation Now isn't terrible but I think it should be a cheaper all-you-can-eat service. Still I'd rather play the real game on a real console rather than streaming it on PS Now - the latency is annoying.
