Re: Hardware Classics: Exploring Luigi's Debut, The Mario Bros. Game & Watch

Fun read. My grandma had some of the G&W units, as well as quite a few of the Tiger handhelds, and all manner of handheld games of skill. I loved playing with all of that as a kid, especially pre NES. Almost all of her stuff had been lost to time and wear and tear, but I found an old Tiger Double Dragon game the last time I rummaged around at her place. I put batteries in, and it still bleeps and bloops; so I cleaned it up and left it out. Maybe a great grandkid will find it and play it like some kind of interactive relic or fossil.

@ogo79 - Glad you got decent value on your stuff. Indies are making some pretty good new old games. I like all the arcade options on Switch. This is the first generation I’ve gone all digital, and it’s great. I used to love collecting game cases, but they’re barely worth collecting any more, and like you; I’m trying to cut down on all the clutter.

I’m probably less a collector, more a hoarder. Starting with 2600, I’ve held on to all my hardware, and probably 95% of my games, and I buy both when I see them reasonably priced, but almost never online. I need to find it in the wild. Probably play my Genesis more than any other old console.

In my last post, I wish I would have typed that Billy, Jimmy, Axel, and Blaze jump kicked our parents to death, but I’m too lazy to change it.

@ogo79 - I knew if I just kept searching, I’d eventually find you. I take after our dad, Abobo. I’ve been searching for you and practicing dad’s double hand clap to the ears ever since Billy, Jimmy, Axel, and Blaze murdered our parents when we were just kids, and now it’s time for revenge.

I learned what “ogo” means a week or two ago. Someone replied to an old thread about combing thrift stores for deals on old games, and you were writing about how it was becoming impossible to find a deal on an old game even then. Now that the entire retro game market is completely controlled by carnies, what have you been doing to get reasonable prices on old games? Can you still find them, or have you had to emulate? I can still find an occasional cart around town at my junk stores and sometimes random garage sales, but I go out hunting for a lot of different stuff, and a decent price on even a semi desirable cart is probably one of my rarest scores.

Re: Meet The Nyko Pixelquest, A Nintendo Labo-Like Build-It-Yourself Arcade Cabinet For Switch

@BlueOcean - I would trade services with you if we lived on the same continent, assuming you’re interested in one; but I’m expecting it to be kind of heavy, and substantial to ship when it’s done. I have a couple ideas for non traditional cabinets, including an old, weird carnival popcorn popper that, oddly, could make a perfect tabletop cabinet with some modifications, but it would also destroy its function and any value it might hold. I’ll post a pic when I ultimately decide what to do and then actually do it.

@BlueOcean - I do want to see what they’re doing with the shoulder buttons. As cool as a two person tabletop would be, I’m looking to make a one player unit with a Hori pad sunk square in the center control area. I also want the Switch screen set deeper into the cabinet with a black border so it really glows. I can make things, but I’m not great at designing them; so I’ve been keeping an eye out for options/ideas.

@BlueOcean - As long as I don’t crush it completely like the motivational speaker, Matt Foley, falling on a coffee table; I’ll be all right. I’m gentler on table top cabs because I’m seated. Most of the torque I put on full size cabs comes from my legs. I really do want to build a tabletop cab from wood complete with a Hori stick, but I’m not sure this is the pattern to use after looking into it a bit more.

Re: Win a copy of Crossing Souls

I wish this was open to everyone here, I’m sure there’s some legal reason why it’s not. It’s a nice promotion. I’ll play this game eventually regardless of the outcome.

This is so cool. Props to Devolver for this promotion, and to NL and all the other sites partnering to make it happen. It actually makes me more likely to buy Devolver’s games now and in the future just for the goodwill they’ve shown.

There’s nothing here I’m typically looking for in a game, and yet this one always catches my attention on the eShop. Nice review. Looks like a some day/wishlist game for now.

Re: Random: Ever Wondered What's Inside A SNES Controller? Here's A Look

I’ve always enjoyed taking things apart and putting them back together. The shells of most old controllers and handhelds are usually a matter of removing a few screws. Everything is gross inside. Especially electronics that we handle. The business of conducting electricity is dusty, greasy, and grimy. Just imagine what the insides of most old Game Boys must look like. Basically a septic tank.
