I don’t like spending money on accessories, but I instantly wanted these. I’m glad I have a reason to not buy them now, even though it was kind of obvious they would only be usable for NES games.
@WiltonRoots - Everything is a scam. Everything is a gimmick. Nothing for sale is pro consumer. Buy into the crap that makes you happy, and don’t worry about the rest. Which reminds me, I’d like to light some money on fire and have a bad time playing some NES games that haven’t aged well with you on Nintendo’s terrible online service some time.
@Yorumi - All it says is that they will not continue to store your backups after you stop paying. It makes absolutely no mention of the timeframe that this will happen. They want our money, and they’ll definitely have ways to remind us that our sub is running out, like every other subscription provider does.
@Yorumi - Don’t know. I pay for the stuff I want to keep before it expires. Please direct me to the place where it states you lose your backup save data the day the subscription ends.
@Yorumi - I didn’t insult anyone criticizing Nintendo. Just calling a rube a rube if you honestly believe anyone/thing would continue providing a subscription based service to a customer who has stopped paying the subscription.
Edit - You would have been one of my first three guesses to be in here whining about this.
@MongolRaider - It was sarcasm. Best guess, anyone shocked by this has never had to pay their own bills or expenses, and possibly they’ve never done anything but play games, panic about backing up their backups, and generally take all this crap way too serious.
@HobbitGamer - Ha, thanks, right back at you. Lately, I’ve be thinking the Internet is like a bad horror movie on Netflix. Hilarious but horrible and in too deep to turn back.
I feel for Dom, writing this review was a lose/lose situation. I was under the impression Chris Scullion was going to write this review. I’m honestly surprised it was reviewed.
Fun read. My grandma had some of the G&W units, as well as quite a few of the Tiger handhelds, and all manner of handheld games of skill. I loved playing with all of that as a kid, especially pre NES. Almost all of her stuff had been lost to time and wear and tear, but I found an old Tiger Double Dragon game the last time I rummaged around at her place. I put batteries in, and it still bleeps and bloops; so I cleaned it up and left it out. Maybe a great grandkid will find it and play it like some kind of interactive relic or fossil.
@ogo79 - Glad you got decent value on your stuff. Indies are making some pretty good new old games. I like all the arcade options on Switch. This is the first generation I’ve gone all digital, and it’s great. I used to love collecting game cases, but they’re barely worth collecting any more, and like you; I’m trying to cut down on all the clutter.
I’m probably less a collector, more a hoarder. Starting with 2600, I’ve held on to all my hardware, and probably 95% of my games, and I buy both when I see them reasonably priced, but almost never online. I need to find it in the wild. Probably play my Genesis more than any other old console.
In my last post, I wish I would have typed that Billy, Jimmy, Axel, and Blaze jump kicked our parents to death, but I’m too lazy to change it.
@ogo79 - I knew if I just kept searching, I’d eventually find you. I take after our dad, Abobo. I’ve been searching for you and practicing dad’s double hand clap to the ears ever since Billy, Jimmy, Axel, and Blaze murdered our parents when we were just kids, and now it’s time for revenge.
I learned what “ogo” means a week or two ago. Someone replied to an old thread about combing thrift stores for deals on old games, and you were writing about how it was becoming impossible to find a deal on an old game even then. Now that the entire retro game market is completely controlled by carnies, what have you been doing to get reasonable prices on old games? Can you still find them, or have you had to emulate? I can still find an occasional cart around town at my junk stores and sometimes random garage sales, but I go out hunting for a lot of different stuff, and a decent price on even a semi desirable cart is probably one of my rarest scores.
Easily my favorite game I’ve played on Switch so far. Feels weird to admit, but I purchased this and Odyssey on the same day, played Odyssey first, then didn’t go back to it again until I completed Kingdom Battle.
@BlueOcean - I would trade services with you if we lived on the same continent, assuming you’re interested in one; but I’m expecting it to be kind of heavy, and substantial to ship when it’s done. I have a couple ideas for non traditional cabinets, including an old, weird carnival popcorn popper that, oddly, could make a perfect tabletop cabinet with some modifications, but it would also destroy its function and any value it might hold. I’ll post a pic when I ultimately decide what to do and then actually do it.
@BlueOcean - I do want to see what they’re doing with the shoulder buttons. As cool as a two person tabletop would be, I’m looking to make a one player unit with a Hori pad sunk square in the center control area. I also want the Switch screen set deeper into the cabinet with a black border so it really glows. I can make things, but I’m not great at designing them; so I’ve been keeping an eye out for options/ideas.
@BlueOcean - As long as I don’t crush it completely like the motivational speaker, Matt Foley, falling on a coffee table; I’ll be all right. I’m gentler on table top cabs because I’m seated. Most of the torque I put on full size cabs comes from my legs. I really do want to build a tabletop cab from wood complete with a Hori stick, but I’m not sure this is the pattern to use after looking into it a bit more.
@hatch - I’ll thrash it like a grunge band thrashing their instruments in the 90s for an ultra rage quit combo/Nyko fatality (after I carefully remove my Switch and joy con of course).
This is worth a 20 spot just for the pattern to construct one from wood and to see how they mapped the shoulder buttons.
@hatch - I don’t have big mitts, but I play cabinets with full body violence (I can’t stop from doing it), and I would destroy this thing in short order right along with you.
@Agent721 - Thanks for the heads up. I’ve watched the trailer a few times in the eShop and couldn’t decide if it looks lifeless, yet intriguing, or lifeless and boring. The premise is pretty cool.
@ogo79 - Mom? Bwe-he-he-he-he, that guy doesn’t scare me. Not even with his diagonal movement and fire breath. I will slowly, methodically, and rhythmically punch him every time he comes out of his “been punched” animation until he’s dead. Easier than Don Flamenco.
I shoulda been listening to @ogo79 because I had to read this twice to be sure. Not thrilled with the art style, but reserve the right to change my mind, and I’m in as long as it comes to Switch and runs.
I wish this was open to everyone here, I’m sure there’s some legal reason why it’s not. It’s a nice promotion. I’ll play this game eventually regardless of the outcome.
@JoeDiddley - Glad you’re enjoying it, a fine birthday treat, hope this was a happy birthday. It will remain one of my favorite gaming experiences. I’ll probably dive into this version over the winter.
@Fake-E-Lee - You bear no shame my man. I look at it like a boxing match. Sometimes I have a bad round and have to wobble back to my corner, catch my breath, and get a couple tips from my cornerman. That’s all I usually need to bounce back, instead of throwing in the towel.
This is so cool. Props to Devolver for this promotion, and to NL and all the other sites partnering to make it happen. It actually makes me more likely to buy Devolver’s games now and in the future just for the goodwill they’ve shown.
@WiltonRoots - The sluggy WiiU UI actually prevented me from playing games on short notice. Now I’m micro gaming like a pro and it feels like a revelation. The Switch feels several generations beyond the WiiU.
@GrailUK - T&F was a great spectator game due to the hilarious faces people make while furiously button mashing. We used to laugh uproariously at each other. The Power Pad made it even funnier.
@StarmanSSP - I think you nailed it. That’s exactly what’s going on here. I sense an invasion angle coming next. He’s probably already on PushSquare repeatedly posting, “So this is where the big boys play?”
Finally started Golf Story last night. I only got about an hour in, but it was everything I was hoping for and more. What a gem. I’ll be checking back in throughout the day for the conclusion of “What’s Going On with @Shiryu : Holiday or Something Else Entirely?”
There’s nothing here I’m typically looking for in a game, and yet this one always catches my attention on the eShop. Nice review. Looks like a some day/wishlist game for now.
I’ve always enjoyed taking things apart and putting them back together. The shells of most old controllers and handhelds are usually a matter of removing a few screws. Everything is gross inside. Especially electronics that we handle. The business of conducting electricity is dusty, greasy, and grimy. Just imagine what the insides of most old Game Boys must look like. Basically a septic tank.
I just have to say that these dueling Diablo threads have been incredibly entertaining, and I would like to thank all involved. This thread is probably slightly more hilarious, but they’re both special in their own ways.
@hatch - You may have just offered the best possible advice for not losing one’s mind. I wish I possessed the intellect necessary to follow along with the enlightened views of these keyboard CEOs and basement sages.
A real shame this occurred pre internet because the email chains concerning this mix up would be important historical documents, and perhaps the funniest written words in human history.

Re: Your Nintendo Switch Cloud Save Files Will Be Lost If Your Online Subscription Expires
@Yorumi - I’m spending $20/yr for the NES games. I’m not even going to use the cloud backups. Some people just wanna watch the world burn my friend.
Re: Your Nintendo Switch Cloud Save Files Will Be Lost If Your Online Subscription Expires
@Spudworthy - That’s a pretty expensive six months of leisure time while you very slowly make the decision to renew or not renew.

This is crazy. It should be like every other subscription service I’ve ever had and continue working even after I stop paying. Stupid Nintendo!
Re: The Capcom Beat ’Em Up Bundle Will Tickle Your Side-Scrolling Fighter Itch
Highlight of the Direct. Can’t wait to beat up everything. Dragons, punks, robots, I don’t care. Line em up, and I’ll punch em all.
