Re: "The Flavour Tends To Get Lost" - Dragon Quest's Yuji Horii On English Translations

It's more complicated than that I think. English has complexity, just not in the areas some Japanese stories tend to use.

I follow Neil Broadley on X (formerly Twitter); he's a localizer for Square who works on mainly the SaGa series, and has a close working relationship with Kawazu (the SaGa series head honcho). Neil posts about various localization stories and challenges often, and is a fascinating read.

Just be aware that anti-localizers who think everything has to be 1:1 with mountains of footnotes who hate every other localization approach like to bleat in Neil's responses, though thankfully they're the minority.

@Mommar It takes way more effort to admit you're wrong than it does to just cry "bot" at someone. But I guess some just prefer the path of least resistance. /shrug

Here's something you can latch onto the "bot" strawman with: Chinese RAM is what is going to drive our RAM prices down, and it'll be better quality than what you can get outside of it. In fact some people are already saving money buying RAM directly from China even with high shipping costs.
