I'm hoping there's a kokopolo review before I think about picking it up but I know you lot have been swamped and have something like a four month review backlog anyway that's only gonna get worse.
Good news the Gunvolt OVA is legit (if not the highest quality), first half is a retelling of the intro level before things get changed up so people can meet more characters in a shorter period of time. No wacky anime harem antics that the second game went overboard with. This is all GV1 here.
Spoilers: You don't get to meet Zonda, which may be a pro or a con depending on your feelings for Zonda (which you have, do not deny them)
Not like a 10/10 or anything but I purchased it to show my appreciation for the franchise. I hope there's more down the line.
@Riderkicker that's the plan, and if it's good (or even passable, really) I'll give them more of my money to encourage more of it. If it's wacky harem antics I don't want (at least in this scenario, I'm always up for terrible harem anime from other places), I'm not gonna feel super guilty about it
You know where the 3DS graphics have an advantage? Hatsune Miku games - the 3DS gives you these lovable little super deformed things that dance around in a goofy fashion, the PS3/4 versions give you life-size versions that are kinda creepy honestly (except grown-up rin, she's :fire emoji goes here:)
i am not excited for the gunvolt OVA to focus on questionable anime harem hijinks instead of things getting electrocuted and exploding which is what it should be
It and it's "NEW" iteration down the line with extra battery will sell closer to 55 or 60 million once Nintendo stops pretending it's a home console and starts treating it like a portable with a super game boy attachment built in. There's a lot to like here (except the price, which needs to be Switched to something lower)
If they keep treating it like a home console it'll get to 20 million... maybe?
I think lumping in Capcom and Ubisoft with EA is a bit misleading - I've been a basketball fan for 25 years (go bulls [except rondo]), and EA's basketball (and other sports game) ports have been shoddy half-efforts even allowing for Nintendo's less powerful systems. What I want to see from NBA 2K18 is signs that EA put in effort to make it the best game they could given the circumstances, even if it's not the best game they can.
Maybe it won't sell. I don't know. I do know this - if EA half-BUTTs (great shovel knight code) their efforts again, then there's no maybe about it.
The price is what it is, I'm glad Mario's not a launch title so I don't have to pre-order the system, gives me a bit of time to save that money up. Probably an October/November purchase.
You'll see Mario (hopefully a Mario 64 kinda Mario), you'll see Zelda (well, you'll see Link, but you know), you'll see a sports game (I'm a hoops guy myself but maybe soccer or football), and you'll see a racing game (new F-Zero pls). You'll see a $300 price point (with included Mario game). Breath of the Wild won't necessarily be launch, but within six weeks of launch. Maybe you'll see some Pikmin, that could be a surprise announcement. I never really liked Pikmin though to be honest. That would please a lot of people who aren't me though.
Not super hyped or optimistic for the Switch itself but I really want to learn more about that Mario game. Galaxy and its sequel were great games ofc but I really hope this is in the Mario 64 huge levels lots of stars big hub world vein instead of the many little levels with a couple stars each.
I was a late 3DS adopter in part since my vision is so poor that turning on the 3D effect for even two minutes is enough to cause me a splitting headache, and I didn't realize it was optional. Mario 3D Land gave me a lot of trouble, but that's really the only game where not being able to use the 3D has detracted from the gameplay experience.
/spend seven years deriding games that put pretty graphics over gameplay
/switch port confirmed "Oh my god it's gorgeous"
If that's what the gameplay looks like, it kinda gives off a Gurumin feel more than the Wind Waker feel people are talking upthread (note: original TWW is a game that is bad, and not good). There's definitely too much water, I don't know why game developers continue to think people like water levels in games.
Nintendo opens 2017 by... compounding 2016 mistakes. Good job, good effort.
I guess at least there's people out there who don't own Dedede's drum dash so it's a slight improvement over "30% discount on games everyone already owns"
@OdnetninAges maybe the guy getting into Ace Attorney will be me! Of the three games offered on 3DS, about how many hours of playtime will I get from each one? Which one is the best? The demos really didn't capture my attention (I am familiar, generally, with how the genre works) but I'll always listen to a good review or three.
I appreciate the effort putting this together NL. The Nintendo Sales & Deals page is seemingly built specifically for tablet users and I can't stand it.
@TheLZdragon It's a bit of a surprise, yeah - I did expect more indie 3DS eshop releases (not necessarily shovelware) because companies could afford to develop for it before seeing if the Switch took off or not. The Wii U, yeah, I get it.
This is the longest I've gone without picking anything up on the eshop since I got the system. Been a very half-hearted effort the last couple months. A couple of retail releases on the xmas list but the digital offerings have been non-existent even outside My Crushing Disappointment (or mynintendo, whatever you call it).
Lot of good games but not really any great ones for the Nintendo Systems this year (though my Xmas list has DB fusions and Mario Maker on it so I will have to reserve judgment on those) - I went with Hyrule Warriors as my 3DS retail GOTY, and it's a port. Kirby was Kirby but honestly that game felt lacking compared to Triple Deluxe. Fire Emblem Fates also wasn't as good as its immediate predecessor. 7th Dragon, there was a moderately underrated title.
Is that Dragon Fantasy RPG parody thing any good, I keep meaning to look into it and the reviews haven't really moved me either way.
The eshop selections with one exception weren't great shakes either. Gunvolt was solid if a little disappointing, Gurumin wasn't as grand as I thought it was going to be, Mighty no 9 never even happened for 3DS (what the heck), Boxboy 2 was a frustrating mission pack sequel, but then there was Rhythm Megamix, a runaway winner.
I'm just not sure I'd be able to take the Circle Entertainment translations in an RPG with a story - Brave Dungeon, which they're also localizing, is the same way.
I've liked their games chosen for localization a lot though. I might pick this one up with a good NL review even though it's not my genre of choice (and I would honestly check the script of Brave Dungeon for grammatical errors for free if they'd let me)
Mario Maker retail later on in the month, the flow of eshop games really seems to be slowing down to a trickle. Hope we get news on Brave Dungeon coming over at some point.
Lotta good deals, unfortunately I've got most of them already. If you haven't, for some reason, played Awakening, and have the SD card space for it, go get it.
Couple list changes here: Fire Emblem Awakening was misspelled as Fire Emblem Fates - Fates isn't a bad game but it's not as good as its predecessor on its own merits (ignoring how or how not Fire Emblem-y each game is).
Tales of the Abyss seems to be missing entirely - I pretty much took seven years off from gaming but seeing that game ported to 3DS is actually what got me back into it. You can take Yokai-Watch off the list. We want that series to get some life in the west, but it's just not on par with these other entries.
"Bravely Default" should be "The first 60% of Bravely Default" - absolutely fantastic first 50 hours and then well, yeah....
Still really looking forward to DQ8, when the 3DS finally gives up the ghost, the full top 10 3DS RPGs list will definitely include it.
Gonna check out the swapdoodle thing, a bit low on content this time around, and I really don't like the "check out the website for the sales" thing they do now.
Wario Land Shake It is underrated if way too short though, check it out wii u owners.
new 3DS + new 'mons for under $150 is probably going to move a lot of units this holiday season.
Best way to prolong the 3DS lifespan though? More good games. More new games, more old games. Somebody put together an F-Zero X 3D, find a way to get FF6 on the virtual console, there hasn't been a new 2D metroid since the Calvin Coolidge administration (citation needed). So many ways to keep the 3DS ticking.

definitely overdue for one of those wacky circle entertainment 3DS releases that ends up being inexplicably fun

Biggest problem: FE has a ton of characters and they don't really explain who any of them are, might be tough for super casual gamers not to get lost.

A very interesting learning tool, I hope it has the effect they're going for!
Those poor precocious kids who want to know why their game world can't have slopes though, how do we explain it to them?
