The festive season is upon us and, well, it's not much fun going out to the shops with the bad weather and crazy crowds. It's the ideal time to look at downloads for new games, then, and the eShop has its usual wide array of discounts.
In Europe our Nintendo Download Update exhaustively lists all the festive discounts, but Nintendo of America no longer does that in its press release, tasking us with browsing the eShop and official deals website. As it's the festive sale and there's a lot on offer, though we thought we'd list the discounts currently available in North America in a convenient list.
There are a lot of games on reduced prices in North America right now - those in bold are those that we think are well worth a look and have scored well in our reviews, but we recommend considering the whole list.
Let's get on with it.

I might pick up Duel Destinies, I've been wanting to get it for a bit, and believe I finally have enough
Gosh...! So many titles.
SF IV 3DS just $5 ?! LOL
I had downloaded Duck Tales Remastered for $5 long time ago. Well, not so impressive.
Btw, from those Wii U eshop games, any recommendation for me 3D Platformer games ? Last time I saw Poi, I need another titles that looks like Mario 64 concept.
I picked up Dual Destinies and Spirit of Justice. I'm still in the middle of Trilogy though.
So, like 5 worthwhile sale items for most people
How long does this sale last?
I just got Samarai Defender a couple of days ago, full price! Wishing I'd waited!
This is the biggest list of sales I've ever seen on the eShop. Granted, a few have been on sale for a number of days already, this is a huge selection.
No Nintendo-published games on here, though. Are they not doing their own eShop holiday sale this year?
I think I might pick up legend of Kay for just $5.
I'm mad that there isn't a poll.
Just kidding. I'm glad you listed them here. It makes it easier then clicking that "Load more" button on Nintendo's site. But I also understand why it's not a regular thing. THAT is a lot games...
@UNSOLUTEDSALT Haha, indeed. Some of these discounts are older I think, but there's no filter to check. In any case, they're all available now, so that's good enough!
@Anti-Matter You could try FreezeMe. The NL review says it borrows ideas from Mario 64.
Edit: "Borrows" sounds bad. What I mean it is inspired by titles like Mario 64.

Does monster hunter 3 ultimate still have online play?
To many games!
I honestly don't know where to start, it would be great to have the review score next to each just as a starting point.
I will get multiple copies of Fairune 2, I loved the first one. I keep thinking I'll get legacy of Kay, but I have a feeling I wouldn't actually play it.
It would be great to do a poll with this article, have it be a recommendations poll instead of asking what people would buy. That would really help find those games I've missed. @ThomasBW84 can you add a recommendation poll to this article?
My wallet is going to be crying like an anime fan on prom night! Trying out Lord magna, and Dual destines and other sales I need to try!
I could safely ignore everything until I got down to the Guild titles on 3DS...sigh...My poor, screaming wallet.
Thanks for the discount compilation!
Bought Spirit of Justice and the Ace Attorney Trilogy last night, pretty glad I waited for a sale since they don't have physical copies to begin with.
@cyrus_zuo I can bold games that I think are good quality, but what do you mean by 'recommendation' poll? Any poll would be too darn long, to be honest!
Oof, that 3DS list is rough. Quantity over quality.
@ThomasBW84 bold would be great! So many games! I've bought one so far, but will get 3-4. (I have way too many games, but love trying things out and finding amazing titles like the Steam world games!)
I think I might pick up Tengami . . . been dragging my feet on that one.
@cyrus_zuo I've put some in bold, when you follow the link you'll get to the game page for each, and the reviews are there if you want to read any.
There is quite a bit of...well 'junk' mixed in there, but then you have awesome stuff like Duck Tales and Runbow too.
Picked up Phoenix Wright: Dual Destinies, Sadame, and Steamworld Dig. There anything else I should get?
Monster Hunter Generations for $20. I'm sold. I actually had it and sold it for $30 on Amazon, and now I can get it back for less than I sold it for. Amazing.
Not too bad, but I'll just stick with the Steam sales.
@ThomasBW84 huge thanks!
I'm tempted to get the Wii U version of the amazing spider-man.
What, no first party games? Ah well. Maybe I'll finally get RE: Revelations.
May be time to get Teslagrad, though I kinda suck at platformers that take any kind of skill. A little Nintendolife fairy told me it's pretty good.
Some nice sales going on overall (though its padded out by RCMADIAX games).
I think I'll get D&D: Chronicals of Mystaria; I have been meaning to grab it, and why not do it as 66% off?
Ambition of the Slime is on sale too in the eshop for $2.99 though I don't think it's listed as on sale on Nintendo's site.
So, we did not get the discount on the other paths of Fire Emblem Fates? Thanks alot NOA!
Always manage to find a way to let me down!
RIP, hands of whoever had to type all those out.
WOW! Nintendo doesn't even have their own games up for sale. Kind of expected that. No wonder you are failing.
There are many i just downloaded but i need to put more eshop credit, there are more i am interested.
By the way: U HOST, JEOPARDY! and Wheel of Fortune are not available in mexican eshop.
I only beat the first game of PW Trilogy !! I might get Dual Destinies/Spirit of Justice but soo many PW games I need to play lol
If you think this is a sale. Check out the uk January PlayStation store sale
Fatal Frame 5 discount wheeeeennnnnn????? But still, excellent list of discounts right here. I'm pretty sure any gamer can find at least something worth getting that they don't have yet in this list. I'll probably pick up Teslagrad and Book of Unwritten Tales 2.
Soul Axiom is on sale too. Why is it not this list?
@abbyhitter Because it wasn't showing in my search on Ninty's site Will check and add.
North America has more deals than Europe as far as I can see. Maybe I'm wrong.
I picked up D&D reply if anyone wants to play sometime.
@ThomasBW84 I checked the website too, and it's not there. I checked the eShop again, it's there on the sale page for $7.49. That's odd.
If only Europe had the same discounts.... I would be soooooo happy. :
Bought Dual Destinies. Still need to buy and play through Apollo Justice first though. Wish Capcom would re-release that on the eShop, but oh well.
Might get Monster Hunter Generations or Spirit of Justice later.
Some of these I already have. I also think I got them cheaper too. I'm thinking about getting solitaire as it's in sale for 3.99 as it's usually 4.99. Gotta grab it while it's low.
So from this sale you are saving from most of the games 0.99. Great saving.
Great sale. Great festive spiritual sale. These are the games why I bought my Wii u and 3ds for.
I'll probably pick up Fairune 1 and 2 and Mercenaries Saga. (And maybe even Runbow for 50% off!)
What a huge list! This looks like the perfect time to finally get the Steamworld games and see if they live up to all the hype!
Wow, that's a lot of games on sale! Sadly, Shantae: Risky's Revenge isn't on sale. I'll look through the rest of the sale because now seems to be a good time to catch up on indie titles.
@abbyhitter $7.49, righto will add that in.
Man, that discount will finally convince me to buy JOURNEY OF A SPECIAL AVERAGE BALLOON! I wasn't sure at 99¢, but at 79¢ I can't pass it up.
@Fearful-Octopus Monster Hunter 3U does still have online and I highly recommend it, I think I prefer it to the 3DS ones partly since I can play it on the TV.
@Caryslan DANG IT! I was finally going to buy the Revelations story in Fire Emblem Fates. I already have Birthright and Conquest.
@yokokazuo Thanks for the info I picked it up! I love monster hunter on 3DS but would rather play it on console. Hopefully monster hunter comes to the switch!
@ThomasBW84,
Some guy on twitter compiled a list also, here:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1HcAUTFcbsDpd1P88rIzz28HaWhecKlgUxvCF1vFKJ6g/edit#gid=0
Hope you guys didn't work to hard ,
If you haven't played SteamWorld Dig yet, that price is a steal. Go for it, man.
I also got into the Ace Attorney series because of a similar sale Capcom had a year ago. Hopefully someone else will get into the series in a similar manner this season.
I appreciate the effort putting this together NL. The Nintendo Sales & Deals page is seemingly built specifically for tablet users and I can't stand it.
awesome! Been holding out on DuckTales but now retail copies are drifting to $25+ then saw the steam sale today for $5 but I'd much rather have it on my wii U so to download I go!!
A nintendo price almost as good as steam is a win.
@OdnetninAges maybe the guy getting into Ace Attorney will be me! Of the three games offered on 3DS, about how many hours of playtime will I get from each one? Which one is the best? The demos really didn't capture my attention (I am familiar, generally, with how the genre works) but I'll always listen to a good review or three.
So no 1st party or VC? I'll pass
Of course Nintendo can't be bothered to put any of their own stuff on sale
I'm surprise there's nothing on that list that interest me Was waiting for the christmas sales.
On the other hand, there are a lot of great games there just for a different taste.
Quality over quantity...
I'll probably buy Spirit of Justice with some Christmas cash.
It's about the quantity of games not the quality
@Anti-Matter Jett Rocket II is pretty similar to Mario 64 in structure and is not very expensive on the eshop. If you haven't played Rayman 2 before, Rayman 3D is a good way to experience a classic 3D platformer. Mario 3D world and land are both wonderful. Also, if you don't expect a conventional Sonic title, Sonic Lost World is a decent 3D platformer.
It's think it just stinks that with all those games on sale NONE of them are virtually console games!! How damn cheap can you be!! Smh!! And no Nintendo games at all? Unbelievable cheapness!!! Good lord!
I picked up "Lord of Magna: Maiden Heaven," although it will be a while before I can even begin to play it.
I'm really surprised there are no Atlus games on sale.
Anyone who has been on the fence about Monster Hunter, get Generations or 4U. They are cheap and the most accessible games in the series, and what a bargain.
Everyone should be getting Steamworld Dig if they don't have it. For the price of a 3DS theme, you can get a great exploration game with a lot of fun.
I think I'll pick up Street Fighter 4, for $5 there's no real reason not to. I'll wait on Mega Man Legacy until they come back out with the $5 sale again.
I ended up getting Lord of Magna and Adventure Bar Story.
I recommend KAMI if you like puzzlers. I'm also enjoying Samurai Defender.
Anyone that has not played these games should really consider picking them up at these prices:
Steamworld Dig
Steamworld Heist
Sportsball
Those games are all surprisingly good... despite not being something that I thought I would like.
@ap0001
I got 90 hours of play time out of the original trilogy, so approximately 30 hours of gameplay for each of the three games included. Dual Destinies gave me about 34 hours, but I got 48 hours out of Spirit of Justice. (Not including DLC.)
Your best bet would likely be the original trilogy, and then getting the rest of the games if you like the trilogy. The games are (in my opinion) at their best if you play them in chronological order. For example, I really liked Spirit of Justice, but I probably wouldn't have liked it as much as I did if it had been the first game in the series I played (if that makes sense).
In that case, the order would be:
Trilogy (original, Justice for All, and Trials and Tribulations)
Apollo Justice (4th game) (Not on eShop for some reason)
Dual Destinies (5th game)
Spirit of Justice (6th game)
(There's also Investigations and Layton vs. Wright, which are also good games, but you can play them at any point really. They might take place after Trials and Tribulations canonically, but I'm not sure.)
As for which one is the best, that's entirely subjective, but I believe Trials and Tribulations is my favorite. Again though, that's because I played the first two games beforehand.
Hope this helped!
The Farming Simulator games are good. Not getting anything in the sale.
Why do they never put the Monster Hunter Ultimate and the Transformers games on sale in Europe?
Christmas Nintendo sales are always disappointing, especially after reading about Steam, Sony and Xbox sales. It's almost like they WANT to drive customers onto other platforms.
Monster Hunter Generations is the only game worth buying at its price, but sadly, my New 3DS XL won't power on any longer. : (
Sad to see no Xeodrifter again, but a large lineup none the less. Might get something cheap.
Steel empire and Steamworld Heist for me!
@Mario_Fart I agree, though some of these sales are actually pretty solid if you don't already own these titles (especially the guild-01 and 02 titles as well as the steamworld titles). What bugs me is that we're not seeing any Nintendo first party titles on sale. Instead Nintendo is content to be stingy and ask people to buy games before they get a discount. My nintendo is such a joke. Like I know it's not that much of a discount but I just picked up Ace Attorney: Spirit of Justice for 33% off during this eshop sale. Meanwhile Nintendo wants me to spend 50 coins (which is anywhere from $25-$50) just to get a 30% discount on xenoblade (which costs $20). Like it makes no sense to me that I have to spend more to get less of a discount than I would get by just waiting for a sale. Like a sanwhich shop has a better loyalty program than Nintendo does, because at least when you buy enough sandwhiches you ACTUALLY GET ONE FOR FREE.
no DLC discount . Wished they would add it. Been wanting to get the Dual Destinies DLCs too.
Picked up Spirits of Justice though
@OdnetninAges no idea if you'll see this message three days after the fact but congratulations you made a sale!
Some pretty good deals here, especially on the Capcom games, and first Steamworld game. (Under 2 bucks? Ganna give it a shot.)
Already got Duck Tales, and Megaman Legacy for those prices from previous sales. Might get "Pheonix Wright" trilogy, sense $15 is like getting each game for only 5 each.
has someone played Puzzle Labyrinth? Is it good?
Lord of Magna is still 29.99 on the site. What's up?
@thehoppypoppy was lord of magna deal ending? It's 29 now. Bummer.
