It's the final North American Nintendo Download Update before Christmas, and there are some solid options available on Wii U and 3DS. There's a standout on Wii U, but there's also a fun retro party game and some tempting and affordable options on 3DS. Let's get to it.
Missed the European Nintendo Download Update earlier in the week? Well, don't panic, you can see all the details (and the many, many discounts) right here.
Wii U eShop
Shantae: Half-Genie Hero (WayForward, $19.99 / CAD$22.39) - WayForward's best-known franchise makes the leap to HD for the first time (outside of re-releases); originally funded on Kickstarter, it's been a long wait for this adventure. A chance to introduce Shantae and company to a new audience, this one follows a similar formula as to the most recent 3DS outing, as players get used to hair whipping and transformations brought on by dancing. We were big fans of this in our Shantae: Half-Genie Hero review.
RADIANTFLUX: HYPERFRACTAL (TACS Games, $2.99) - An intriguing looking title with a plot centred around hacking; in execution it's a blend of hacker simulation combined with minigames. For example there's plenty of shoot 'em up play, with nods to minesweeper and even some play similar to the original DOOM. Though it has some positives, we feel this one struggles to reach its potential; we explain why in our Radiantflux: Hyperfractal review.
Wii U Virtual Console
Mario Party 2 (Nintendo, $9.99) - We jump straight into the second N64 entry in the series, which makes sense as it improved on the original and included a number of the same minigames. This one did include more unique game boards, and its blend of polygonal fun still works rather well; we had a jolly time in our Mario Party 2 review.
3DS eShop
Geki Yaba Runner Deluxe (QubicGames, $4.99 / CAD$5.50) - In a sense a follow up to 2 Fast 4 Gnomz, this sees those gnomes transform in order to tackle over 100 new levels; the developer states that these fast paced platforming challenges are among the most challenges players will face. Challenge accepted?
Mini Golf Resort (Teyon, $4.99 / CAD$5.64) - As this is Mini Golf the focus is on finding the right angles and timing for getting through tricky challenges. Ultimately this promises character customisation, 1001 holes on 56 courses (across four worlds) and plenty of bonuses to collect. We hope it's not a fore (the second time we've used that lame wordplay for this game) and will check it out in a review.
Gourmet Dream (CIRCLE Entertainment, $5.00 / CAD$7.00) - We've had a few of these Dream titles on 3DS, often taking the form of mini-management sims; this time around you're trying to build up and develop a top-class restaurant. It's a genre that can certainly be fun, and will undoubtedly be to some gamer's tastes.
Hit Ninja (Petite Games, $1.99 / CAD$2.59) - This appears to be a rather simple gallery shooting game, albeit you're firing shurikens at targets with a Japanese background.
3DS eShop Demo
Ice Station Z (Wobbly Tooth, free)
3DS HOME Themes
Mario's Winter Wonderland (Nintendo, $1.99)
As always, Nintendo of America wants you to check out the eShop and official Sales & Deals website for a breakdown of discounts. Games reduced this week include Pirate Pop Plus, SteamWorld Heist and Chasing Aurora.
That's the line-up for this week's festive Nintendo Download Update in North America. Let us know what you plan to download in the poll and comments below.

What happened to Castlevania Dracula X?
...I thought Mario Party 2 was already out...where the heck is 3? :/
I'm stuck on the damn one eyed earth worm thingy in the screenshot.I've yet to make it to the top though,now I know even when I do finally make it I've got to fight the sucker.
Where is Pokémon Snap, Nintendo?!
Finally, a Mario Party game on Wii U that is actually good! Too bad it isn't Mario Party 3. I really miss that one...
Poor week. Shantae: Half-Genie Hero is very good though.
Is Mario Party 2 worth it for single player alone?
Shantae for people that enjoy that series.
Otherwise, a few wait and see upon reviews.
Really don't like how they don't include sales in the release list anymore.
@XCWarrior There's over 100 sales currently going on on the eShop. 129 to be exact.
I can kind of understand why they wouldn't do so.
Waiting on Shantae to hit retail.
Nothing for me. I just spent a bunch on video games for my kids and myself. I'm good for awhile. Plus I still got to finish DQ7 before DQ8 comes out next month.
@Mega_Yarn_Poochy With that in mind, here's my idea.
Hey Nintendo Life, for Friday, you guys should do a story on the best games that are currently on sale with your reviews linked to them. There are a ton of games right now, hard to just got to each one and seek out the gems among the debris.
Not like there is a lot of other news going on.
Nothing for me this week.
@XCWarrior That's actually a pretty good idea, knowing that most of the games on sale on just small indie devs with their mediocre games trying to push a few more sales... or RCMADIAX.
@HeroOfCybertron that's what I'm wondering! It's been removed entirely from Nintendo's website as well..
Shantae is a great franchise.
I remember when Mario Party 2 came out as a Christmas release when it debuted on the Wii Virtual Console years ago. Interesting the parallel in timing.
@XCWarrior
Reviews are behind because we are getting force fed "stories" on how various people (bloggers, YouTube stars and game developers) "think the Switch might be popular." Next there will be an article with a video of some random jerk talking about the old Nintendo cereal and the headline asking "Hey do you remember when Nintendo had a Zelda cereal?"
I got Shantae on PS4. I see no point in getting the Wii U version of anything.
Mario Party 2 for me!
Addendum: As soon as it hits $2 for owners of the Wii VC version.
@flapjackashley2 virtual console not wiiware
Since I'll get it discounted for owning Mario party 2 on the Wii virtual console I'll be grabbing it
Playing through Shantae since Tuesday. It's so good!
Hoping I can find Shantae physical.
Not to nitpick, but Thomas responded to me about the missing Minecraft Story mode retail edition for Wii U yet still has not mentioned it. Are they being paid to ignore it?
Nothing for me for a while on Nintendo platform. Waiting to buy a big games bundle with switch.
@xPH03N1Xx86
It is readily available on Amazon.
@spurgeonryan Is it available to buy on the eShop? If not, that's why. This weekly article is just to showcase new releases, new virtual console releases, and new sales on the eShop .
I said this once and I will say it again - Do not get Mini Golf Resort. Prepare for a death wish, whoever is reviewing the game for NintendoLife
Will wait until after the holiday to consider purchases but a couple of intriguing things on here and in the sales
@RyanSilberman
Thanks for the heads up. I might have given it a shot since it seems to have a lot of holes and courses from the description.
Thought we were getting Castlevania this week, although I wasn't going to get it anyway.
Just how many 'Dream' games does Circle have? They're cute and stuff, but can't stand up to a proper PC simulation.
I wonder if that Mario theme has Bowser in it.
Let me guess, Mario Party 2 can't be played with other Wii remotes or other controllers, right? What a waste of a party game download.
Nothing for me this week from Nintendo, just picked up Shantae and the Pirate's Curse on PS4 for cheap like $4 if your a plus member.
Finally, I can dance through the danger!
Still massively behind EU on N64 VC. Will we ever catch up? Probably not at the rate NOA is going.
and they didn't choose Mario party 1 AND 2 why? And if the answer is because the rotating the analog stick thing incident, a lot of the controllers had the finger pad things so...what gives?
went to the eshop and didn't find Mario Party 2?
I'll give it another hour and try again..is it multi-player at least..seeing as how the virtual console Mario Party DS is single player only..
Shantae requires too much data, (why couldn't WiiU use SD cards like Wii & 3DS?) so I'll have to get the disc version.
MP2 would be nice, once they fix the discount for those of us whom have the Wii version...
Still, I wish we could get the original Mario Party. Dispite MP2's "improvements" it felt more like a Mario game (with more Mario music nods & such) technically had more levels, felt less "kiddy," had better music, a better minigame island mode, a cool "finale" event when you get 100 stars, and such.
I also like the options screen being a peaceful li'l village.
Only way they could release it though, is if they somehow reprogram the game to no longer include the blister-inducing/controller breaking "spin the analogue stick as quickly as possible" minigames, or change their controls. With Hudson out of business, and Nintendo not willing to go through that much trouble to sell a $10. game, we'll never get the original unless they remake it from scratch.
Shantae for me. I'm really excited to pick that game up in a few days.
I said I'm gonna download Half Genie but retail is king! I don't want to deal with the issues of data storage and I also don't care enough to get a whole new hardrive.
@rdrunner1178 It has a lot of holes, but it's a blatant case of quantity over quality. Here's what you could expect from it - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LhgejudVymE
Ain't this just a sad ol' sack of nothing. I'll be keeping my change, Nintendo, you filthy underachieving animals.
MP2 discount isn't even working. No way they are getting 10 more bucks out of me for it.
Nothing for me due to being a bit strapped for cash due to the holidays + other unforeseen bills.
@Whopper744 thats so frustrating. Nintendo sucks at digital.
I received Mario Party 2 free from Club Nintendo back in the day so I guess I will upgrade it to my Wii U for a buck-fifty. I still have not played it though because the last Mario Party game I played solo was Mario Party 8 and found it to be extremely boring and tedious. Maybe one day I will get around to trying Mario Party 2 but these games scream multiplayer.
There's a pretty huge sale going on
@gojiguy The Capcom sale or something else?
@LegendOfPokemon Same place Mario Kart 64 and Star Fox 64 are I guess. Makes zero sense.
And my wait for Bomberman 94' continues yet again.
I wish the sales feature would return to these articles also I guess. I also used to come here for reviews but they dont do those much anymore unless its pokemon or a major title.
I was reading on Go Nintendo and they reported that the discount is not in effect yet on Mario Party 2. So, if you bought it on Wii wait to do the upgrade.
Probably going to pick up the Ace Attorney Trilogy and Spirit of Justice, would've been nice if NL mentioned these sales since I wouldn't have known about it if my friends didn't tell me about it.
I would say Half Genie hero but I bought it on PS4
Shantae and Mario Party 2 for me. Will get Shantae later though.
Also getting Ace Attorney Dual Destinies from the sale.
Notable games in the sale:
Ace Attorney Trilogy - $15
Ace Attorney Dual Destinies - $12
Ace Attorney Spirit of Justice - $20
Monster Hunter Generations - $20
Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate - $20
Resident Evil Revelations - $5
Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition - $5
Steamworld Dig - $1.79
Steamworld Heist - $10
Mega Man Legacy Collection - $7.49
@gojiguy Yup. My wallet is bleeding dry. More than 140 titles!! Pirate Pop, here I go!!
@RyanSilberman Pun intended, I guess...
Im going to give mini golf a shot in the eshop. I really like fun fun touch mini golf. Hopefully its about the same as that with more holes and courses.
@Windy
Heed my warnings shown earlier in the comments.
EDIT: Better yet: https://www.ticgn.com/review-mini-golf-resort-3ds/
@maceng
Wow I did not even know I made that pun, lol
Mario Party 3 to miss out on the VC yet again? Is there a chance it could show up before the Switch? I never did get this one (or even know about it) back on N64. I was paying too much attention to the eminent Cube, probably. Wouldn't it be sad for it to release on Wii U now only to be overshadowed by a new console yet again? I sure wouldn't complain.
@SMW They re-released Excitebike 64 for the first time last month, so anything is possible!
Nothing for me. Shantae was a steam pickup.
The shooter Steel Empire is on sale too!
Our family's gonna be having a Mario Party this Christmas!
@mikegamer The way in which you asked came off as you being overly negative for no good reason. Most people probably assumed you were trolling. A simple "Does this game support multiplayer?" would've sufficed.
Oh, by the way, MP2 DOES support multiplayer. It's a multiplayer-focused game. Everyone and their mom has known this fact for a decade and a half.
@mikegamer
MP2 does allow multiplayer, but not with wiimotes. You need pro or classic controllers as the wiimote doesn't have enough buttons/analog to emulate N64 controller and the gamecube adapter doesn't work with wii u vc.
@cleveland124 Are you talking about the Wii Mode VC version or the Wii U VC? Nintendo.com claims Wii Remotes are supported. http://www.nintendo.com/games/detail/mario-party-2-wii-u
So now I just need Mario Kart 64 and Super Smash Bros. to upgrade.
@Seanmyster6 Well, I removed my comment, so there ya have it.
@mikegamer I was more referring to your first comment, btw.
Shantae, but I already Dloaded it a couple weeks ago with my KS backer code...
@RyanSilberman well i had 10 dollars in store credit and noticed Lord magna was on sale so I picked that up instead. I will buy the Golf game at some point. Probably when it hits a sale. But I saw another video at youtube which shows that golf game pretty good. Heck its a cheapy anyway
