I need to figure out a way to give Project Mirai DX a 14/10 to skew your results, goodness I love that game, all it's missing is future Rin and customizable Gumi.
Fire Emblem Awakening is outstanding, and only my general badness at that genre keeps it from being a 10 for me (Fates not so much). Smash 4 is terrific though it ruined my control stick. I never imagined I'd put 150+ hours into Tomodachi Life and still come back to it on occasion. You can tell by the user pic that Gunvolt is another game I adore.
I'm assuming we're only counting the 3DS original games and not remakes/ports like Tales of the Abyss, SMB3, the Zelda N64 remakes &c &c.
The first 150 stages were really a solid game in themselves, only needed to use items on four stages (Zoroark is an awful main stage and should be deleted), including what was then "the final boss", so the difficulty curve worked really well.
Everything after stage 150 is just constant cheap move after cheap move and almost impossible to S-Rank anything unless you want to resort to playing multiple times a day for Meowth farming - and even after you do farm coins the catch rates are all between 11 and 20% anyway. They forgot to make the entire last half of the game fun.
My first Zelda game and honestly probably towards the middle of the pack (but Zelda, so "middle of the pack" is what, a mid-8?) - the nostalgia filter does not kick in for this (or Awakening DX) the way it does for the N64 games.
@Damo You mention it's "perfectly playable" which, not to be accusatory, sounds like it's being diplomatic. Would you personally recommend dropping $40 (or the equivalent UK price) on this if someone only has an original 3DS?
This might push me over the edge if I'm really close to a reward but usually I'm irrationally stingy with my 3DS memory card. I've got 95,000 blocks left on it and even now I'm wary of how big a game is going to be even though no games are more than 20,000.
Kirby Robobot definitely has to be physical though, I cannot pass up that box art.
He should have lied, said "oh, we took the fighting robots and made them Kirby-er and you've got Kirby Robobot" and no one would ever have to know the truth...
I don't know what "overhyped bobbins" is but I would definitely say Earthbound qualifies - it's not a bad game by any stretch but the story gets way too much credit for being "artsy" and quirky compared to what it deserves and the gameplay isn't really all that fun. I'd give it closer to a 7, 7 1/2 out of 10.
Mario Kart (even including Double Dash which I loathed) is probably the best of the lot. Paper Mario not wanting to be an RPG anymore despite being vastly superior to Mario and Luigi (Dream Team the only one of those I didn't actively hate) is a bummer. Might vote for it anyway but eesh Sticker Star was so poorly thought out.
Did the absurdly low level cap in the original Mario RPG bother anybody else? I would always reach it before [spoilers for a 20 year old game?] I even finished the volcano and end up playing the last couple hours with no incentive.
Not being quite as good as Mario 3 and all of the wholly intentionally absurdly difficult wholly un-fun rom hacks of this game (and of this design in Mario Maker) made me forget that it is, actually, a really really good game for the most part.
Getting the two 3DS demos, hopefully BS is a lot more of the first four chapters (and chapter 5 didn't bug me that much in a vacuum) and at some point before the end of the month I'll pick up Conquest & Revelations I think. Birthright hasn't drawn me in the way Awakening did but the other two campaigns are still 70 - 80 hours for $40 at my playing speed, hard to pass up.
Still considering HWL even if it's on the laggy side. I would say Gunvolt is the only game I'm actively excited about, but I always enjoy Kirby titles (except, weirdly, the widely beloved Kirby Super Star). Same with Bravely Second - like Kirby I'm going to get it at some point but I'm not like "oh boy Bravely Second I can't wait, day one buy!" like I was with FE Fates (oops) or Legend of Dark Witch 2.
I watched the NA version (being out here in NA) and I came away moderately disappointed.
I liked Kirby (Kirby's Dream Land was my first personally owned game, I've got a soft spot for the pink guy), Gunvolt 2, and the Bravely Second Demo coming next week (yay demos, yay the first half of Bravely Default).
Was hoping for a Dragon Quest release date, I've never played any of them (was hoping for a demo too, honestly), Paper Mario looked distressing (and don't give me that "but you haven't played it!" when I haven't played Kirby Robobot either but you're allowed to say good things for some reason). SNES being N3DS exclusive was an understandable bummer [I'd play a laggy as heck FF3/6 on the original, personally] and Federation Force did absolutely nothing to make me want to play it. The Team Kirby Clash thing was weird, and the less said about a Waddle Dee amiibo the better (now if we're adding the other characters from the underrated and seemingly removed from canon Kirby 64, I'm in)
My depth perception is too poor to play the MH series, but everyone I've talked to about it loves it, so go nuts people, I'm glad for you.
Nothing for me this week, but I've still got 3/4 of pokemon yellow, 2/3 of Megaman Legacy (to say nothing of just sitting there listening to the soundtrack while reading) and lord knows how much Fire Emblem is left (through ch 17 of Birthright but haven't done any paralogues, plan to pick up at least Conquest which is hopefully a more engaging game)
would like to see more demos on the 3DS regardless.
Wonder if enough of us shell out $10 for Gen I they'll let us shell out $10 or $12 for Gen II (rip the battery life on my silver cart that's been dead for a decade)
Having skipped three generations entirely, I'm not super qualified to answer this question (and old carts are crazy expensive) but of the ones I've played:
1. Silver - given what I've heard about SoulSilver it might honestly be the best one in the series but I'm not dropping $45 for a cart (and well, I already have to drop $40 on the other two FE routes and has Mega Man Legacy's price been fixed yet?). Silver was also the first game I ever preordered, from Funcoland, which hasn't existed since 2000. So many hours of play in this game before the battery died. Exploring Kanto after going through Johto was so cool, and taking down Red's jerk Snorlax (uh, spoilers?) totally satisfying.
2. Blue - Where I got my pokemon start. I honestly don't remember why I picked this game up, or where, I don't remember bugging my parents about it (like I totally did with gen II) or following along with the cool kids at school like I did the Power Rangers in first grade. My blue cart still works, but I haven't decided if I'm getting red or yellow this weekend. First time I ever got to Indigo Plateau with that 8-bit snare beat I got chills. I was also 11 but whatever.
3. Omega Ruby - Having nephews and nieces brought me back into the series, and while the enormous end-game water route wasn't to my tastes, the music was pretty awesome (Wally's battle theme, oh my goodness; the eon flute theme is another top notch piece)
4. X/Y - Honestly I kinda found this one lacking in creativity other than the reflecting cave. Pokemon-amie was neat but I found most of the minigames more distracting than anything. Also the lumiose city thing, not great. The music I thought wasn't as good as ORAS either. Still passable for 40 hours.
@JaxonH and @AVahne reached C-support! support music jingle
Seriously though the idea of FE on mobile makes a lot more sense than a lot of people would like it to. I hadn't considered it but yeah, it could absolutely work.
Heck, maybe My Nintendo/Nintendo Account could connect the next FE game between the console and your phone, and while you could play the whole game on the console, you could work up supports using extra features on mobile when you don't have the console with you. It's not as crazy as it sounds I swear.
You'll have to forgive me if this was explained elsewhere (you guys put out a lot of content!) but is there a particular reason that "FE Fates" has one entry in the game collection feature (that I can only give one score), when most of the community seems to feel that it's three different games?
I still haven't decided which one I'm getting. Not super happy with the price point so I'm only picking up one instead of all of them like my original plan.
Also apropos of nothing Mirai DX is on sale on amazon for 20 bucks and everyone should buy it.
9/10 is way higher than I've seen elsewhere - I've held off on buying the 6 VC games because this at $15 digital is cheaper than getting all six at ~$25ish, and the only place I'm going to miss save states is MM1. But goodness are people sour about this game in general, and it certainly looks like they've got reason to be.
Ocarina and Majora are 1/2 for me even though LTTP was my first it never really resonated the way most NES/SNES games did (neither did Link's Awakening/DX for that matter)
I gotta say I'm shocked that Wind Waker is receiving enough votes to be in second place - that was by far my least favorite. A case can be made for any of TP, LTTP, Zelda I or LBW for the three spot but I went with Twilight Princess because Arbiter's Grounds was so freaking cool.
Awakening was my first experience with the series and you can make the case that it's the 3DS' single best game. I've got Birthright on preorder and as long as Conquest doesn't turn out to be obscenely difficult I'll be picking that one up too - and maybe I'll actually be able to beat one of these in Classic mode (I said FE13 was a great game, not that I didn't stink on ice at it).
And it's still only my third most anticipated title coming out on 3DS in the next ten days. Savor the system's last hurrah!
Oh that's the actual Final Fantasy III. I had my hopes up for a minute there. Might pick up Theatrhythm at that price, supposedly it's $15 at the local game stores when it's in stock but I've never seen it in stock.
Will have a look at that 3DS demo and that's all for this week. I don't think I'm alone in feeling like we're gearing up for the last big gasp for it here in the next couple of weeks with FE, Mega Man and VC pokemon.
Any chance of a Nindies Love You 3DS sale in late March to tide me over until Bravely Second? (and maybe Hyrule Warriors if the retail port works better than the digital version evidently does)
I am a bit curious why people vote for nothing when there are demos out, there's straight up no downside unless you're totally out of memory.
Definitely seems like it's a redesign built for tablet users, which I am not - if possible is there a way for a user to shrink the topics/articles/games&c banner? That and the log-in banner take up about 25% of my screen space and follow the entire way down the page.
I switched back to list view immediately, please don't remove it entirely in a future update.
I understand you guys put a lot of work into this, but I'm not a fan.
picked up the Smash DLC (smash took over the most played game on my system this morning), 3DS selection once again really poor and I'm good with the one Miku theme I've already got.
3D Mario in the vein of an N64 collect-a-thon rather than a Mario Galaxy or Super Mario 3D world - more than anything else, I want this. Zelda, most certainly - let's go crazy and get a Link's awakening/Oracle style 2D Zelda maker, oh man, I might want that more than Mario 64 II. F-Zero, closer to F-Zero X than GX, I thought GX went for pretty graphics over actual good racetracks and was not a fan. Paper Mario, but good (an actual RPG instead of Super Paper Mario, multiple partners, no atrocious sticker mechanic or 'you didn't bring the right sticker to this boss you didn't even know was in this stage so now it's impossible to win', more story than 'Bowser kidnaps Peach')
Lesser wishes, but still would be psyched Metroid, preferably 2D; I know people love Metroid Prime but I just didn't enjoy it. Oh man, I totally forgot about Wii Music, I had so much fun with that game, yeah, let's get a new NX Music/Fit/Sports lineup going too.
Some non-Nintendo franchises I'd also like to see early on: Let's bring Tales back to Nintendo systems please. Great series, Abyss is still the most played title on my 3DS, bought a PS3 solely for Tales games and the other two things on this list. Any freaking licensed pro sports game, heck, pay Tecmo all of the money to re-do Super Tecmo Bowl (SNES version, not Tecmo Super Bowl) with all 32 NFL teams and I would pay $$$ for it. Project Mirai (or I guess Diva with no creepy petting mechanic would be fine, also please include future style Rin)
I backed this, I still expect it to be a good game, but for Inafune's career not to be totally and deservedly over this game needs to a be a whole lot better than "good" and I just don't see it.
An unintended benefit of the not great translation is how everybody just knows Klinsy is "that guy", you know the one everyone knows but nobody wants to hang out with, but we never get anything remotely explaining why. Everyone's just like "ugh it's Klinsy" - I find it hilarious but really, it makes no sense to have it in-game.

Nothing until My Nintendo drops (they're running out of March to drop it in), and nothing this week looks to be worth a purchase anyway.
Re: Digger Dan DX is Tunnelling Towards a Summer Release on 3DS
Looks interesting! 3DS could use some more non-RPGs for variety's sake.

Metroid, preferably 2D; I know people love Metroid Prime but I just didn't enjoy it.
Oh man, I totally forgot about Wii Music, I had so much fun with that game, yeah, let's get a new NX Music/Fit/Sports lineup going too.
Some non-Nintendo franchises I'd also like to see early on:
Let's bring Tales back to Nintendo systems please.
Re: Mighty No. 9 Has Been Delayed Once Again as Keiji Inafune Offers Sincere Apologies
I backed this, I still expect it to be a good game, but for Inafune's career not to be totally and deservedly over this game needs to a be a whole lot better than "good" and I just don't see it.
Re: SEGA 3D Classics Collection is Heading to Retail in the Americas on 26th April
Have Sonic 1 already but probably will buy for puyo puyo alone, I've put in over 15 hours on Mirai DX's 5-battles-at-a-time puyo puyo 39.
Re: Review: The Legend of Dark Witch - Episode 2: The Price of Desire (3DS eShop)
