Re: Hardware Review: 8BitDo M30 - The Best Retro Controller On Switch

able_to_think

I was going to get this for my Genesis but the Krirkzz one was on sale a couple months ago so I bought it instead. It’s a perfect replica of the 6 button Genesis pad and it has great features such as being able to emulate the Genesis 3 button controller for games like Golden Axe 2 or the Master System contriller for use with my Master System. So I’d say if you’re looking for a wireless controller to use with your Genesis/Master System it’s worth waiting for the Krikzz one to go on sale.

Re: Wait A Minute, Is That Marina From Splatoon 2 On The Xbox One Dashboard?

able_to_think

@Lionyone The Xbox One constantly hangs and becomes unresponsive and it’s got tons of garbage like Mixer bogging it down. Plus you have to download core features like the Bluray player as separate apps for no reason. It’s got sub menus within sub menus and large portions of the home page are taken up with advertisements and ludicrously massive icons and did I mention how often it becomes unresponsive for a second and then registers all your button presses at once? Also it takes over a minute to boot from being fully turned off so you’re forced to keep it on standby. Also the store automatically plays videos which is fine but they aren’t muted like they are on PS4 so I have to mute my sound system whenever I’m browsing it.

It runs games super well though which is why I own it.

Re: These N64 Spine Labels Are The Perfect Way To Organise Your Game Collection

able_to_think

Over the past couple years I bought a set of end label stickers for my N64, Master System, and 32X games. The seller on ebay I get them from makes them out of vinyl so they’re easy to remove and don’t leave residue or paper fragments. I’m probably going to get a set for my Jaguar collection when it consists of more than two games (admittedly Alien Vs. Predator and Tempest 2000 are arguably the only two games worth having for that system).

Re: Random: Nintendo Fixed One Man's Out Of Warranty, First-Gen 3DS For Next To Nothing

able_to_think

Nintendo products are so well made that they rarely ever break on me but I’ve had to send a couple things in. My Wii straight up died a couple years out of warentee which cost me $90 and my DS screen had a single dead pixel which they fixed for free. They got major props for having Americans on their customer service line though. I hate it when I get “John” from India.

Re: 8Bitdo's Latest SN30 Controller Firmware Update Improves Analogue Accuracy On Switch

able_to_think

What a coincidence! I got a SN30PRO yesterday and after putting some time in with it, I must say it's a fantastic joypad. I'd heard the rumble was loud but I guess they fixed that with a firmware update because I couldn't hear it at all over Mario Odyssey in tabletop mode at max volume. If it looks appealing to you then I'd highly recommend getting it! It's a great little controller and is sure to stimulate your nostalgia glands!

Re: Guide: Powering Up Super Power - Finding The Ultimate SNES Console

able_to_think

Over the last couple months I've been working on getting most of my old consoles hooked up to my main HDTV with as high quality as possible with an XRGB Mini Framemeister.

Currently I've got an HDMI modded NES, an RGB modded SNES mini, an Ultra HDMI modded N64, a GameCube with S-Video (I'm on a waiting list for the HDMI plug and play), a Master System with RGB, a Genesis with RGB, a Saturn with RGB, a Dreamcast with VGA, an Xbox with component, a PS2 with RGB, and I've got PS3, PS Vita TV, PS4 Pro, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Wii U, and Switch hooked up via HDMI. All of that is going through a 5.1 surround sound system and is displayed on a 1080p HDTV.

Then in another room I've got an old CRT television with an Atari 2600, Intellevision, Turbografx 16, and another NES hooked up.

I may have gone too far in a few places.

Re: Miyamoto on Bringing Back the “Old” Style of Mario, Exploring New Art Styles

able_to_think

I feel like I’m the only one who doesn’t want another Mario 64 remake. The game is pretty much perfect. It still looks pretty good too, although I’m playing it on an Ultra HDMI modded N64 which definitely helps. Speaking of which. it’s a game I feel needs to be played on original hardware because the controls were made for the triple banana N64 controller. I’ve tried it on VC with the Classic and Wii U Pro controllers and on a PC emulator with a DS4 and Xbone Elite controller but nothing beats the original hardware. That game was made for that controller.

Re: Sonic Forces Producer Discusses the Breadth of Content Available

able_to_think

I wish they’d just pick a direction and stick with it. Every Sonic game feels like they’re rebooting the franchise. They have good ideas but don’t fully capitalize on them before they’re discarded for whatever the next game is. If they picked a direction and stuck with it for a few sequels they could refine the gameplay and make something really great.

Re: Video: The SNES Mini Controller Is Not Entirely Identical To The Original

able_to_think

I just want to know if the dpad is terrible like it was on the NES Mini. Everyone kept saying they felt identical but I could press every direction at once on my NES Classic (which is also a problem on my Switch Pro Controller). I hated it so much that I actually swapped the dpad, buttons, and membranes with ones I cannibalized from an original NES controller. Now it's got the 100% authentic feeling it's supposed to.

Re: "No Plans" For Destiny 2 On Switch, Says Project Lead Who Loves Nintendo's Console

able_to_think

This seems completely reasonable. It's a game where you get together online with friends and go on raids. That's not the type of thing that works well on a portable and the Switch's online isn't anywhere as good as PS4 or Xbox One. The Switch doesn't even have voice chat yet which you absolutely need for Destiny. So them focusing on the systems that best fit their game makes sense.

I love my Switch but it doesn't need big games just for the sake of having them.

Re: Masahiro Sakurai Compares Zelda: Breath Of The Wild And Horizon Zero Dawn

able_to_think

I can't get into Horizon. I spent almost 9 hours trying and I just don't like it. The main problem is that world just isn't fun to traverse. With all the robot dinosaurs that attack you with no provocation it forces you to use the plodding stealth mechanics. If they do see you, it turns into a big brawl that takes forever because the dinosaurs take so many hits to kill.

It doesn't help that most of the side content is repetitive. Be it the stuff that's copy pasted throughout the world or the side missions that feel so similar from a gameplay perspective. I'm so sick of missions where you follow the glowing trail which is something Horizon does a lot. I'd just avoid them but you have to do them if you want to be leveled enough to take on the main story missions.

I think Zelda has ruined me for open world games.

Re: Editorial: The Ongoing Pleasures of Nintendo Switch Boxes, Cartridges and (Occasionally) Manuals

able_to_think

I adore physical media be it Blurays, CDs or games. Something about having all your stuff on a shelf and being able to look at it, pull out the game you want to play, and put it in the console is really appealing to me. Plus you can sell your physical copy if the game sucks or you beat it and aren't going to play it again. Although I rarely do that because I'm a collector. I've got over 250 games displayed and even more in boxes. I really need to catalog them.

Re: Talking Point: Nintendo's Upgraded Confidence in Switch is a Relief

able_to_think

Mario Kart does a great job of showing off the multiplayer potential of the Switch. That could be a system seller if people play it with a friend. Splatoon is great but not really a system seller to people who haven't played the original. People have been asking for a true console Pokémon ever since the original so that would move units, even if it's just Stars and not a new entry.

A definitive version of Smash with the modes from both the Wii U and 3DS version would be a real winner. The Switch is perfect for it since you can hand the Joycon to a friend and play multiplayer on the go without needing two systems. They could add the Ice Climbers to that version since they were nearly done but they couldn't get them running on 3DS. Parity isn't an issue anymore with them phasing out the 3DS. Another round of DLC characters wouldn't go amiss either and would keep the game in the news again.

I think some other Wii U ports might be a good idea too. If the Switch succeeds, it'll be in the hands of a lot of people who didn't have a Wii U. Games like Bayonetta 2 and Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze deserve to be enjoyed by a wider audience. The HD Zelda remasters would also be a good idea to port again since they're great and taking them on the go is enough to justify triple dipping. Maybe ever HD up the 3DS remasters of the N64 Zelda games too. That would be harder than just porting the already Hd games but it would also sell like crazy.

Overall, I think the Switch will be a very successful system. It fills a niche that the PS4 and PC don't so you can justify getting one even if you own one of those. Plus it has the best kind of gimick. One that has the combination of being magical and practical at the same time.

Re: It's Another Nintendo Switch Teardown, With Analysis on Potential for Future Improvements

able_to_think

I'm perfectly happy with my Switch. An increase in storage down the road won't make me regret buying it day one. If you want to talk about it sucking to be an early adopter, try being someone who bought the original 3DS at launch. That system had no games, was aesthetically hidious, was poorly designed (the edges of the touch screen scratched the hell out of the top screen and the L and R buttons squeeked), was uncomfortable for me to hold with all its sharp corners, and, to add insult to injury, Nintendo dropped the price by $50 a few months after launch. Needless to say, I traded that piece of crap in the day the vastly superior XL model was released.

Re: Xbox Boss Phil Spencer Shares His Thoughts On The Nintendo Switch

able_to_think

I like Phil Spencer. He's done an amazing job at cleaning up the mess Don Matrick made of the Xbox devision. Shame the Xbox One is such a terrible console compared to PS4. Underpowered with very few exclusives worth getting (pretty much only Halo and Sunset Overdrive) and saddled with a cluttered, unresponsive UI. It's by far my least used system.

Re: Hardware Review: Nintendo Switch Pro Controller

able_to_think

I'm getting one because I need the traditional controller experience. The only thing I wish is that it had remappable buttons or paddles under the controller. I love them on the Xbox One Elite Controller has that so much that I actually sent my DS4 to be modded to add buttons to the underside. It's not something I expected but it would have been nice if Nintendo had included that. Once you get used to not having to take your thumb off the right stick to reload, it's hard to go back.
