Before anyone who lacks the proper knowledge chimes in all excited:
4K Streaming does NOT mean the games will be rendered and played in 4k resolution. Most PCs can't even do 4K right now, let alone a console.
As for the 900p bit, that's slightly worrying. It's 2016, we shouldn't even be having issues getting 1080p on a $400-500 USD machine. Though 60fps is good.
Sigh. Things I wish hadn't of happened: Amiibo. It's even worse than on-disc DLC in my opinion because at least on-disc DLC isn't subject to the whims of stock and scalpers. Make it unlockable in game, without a plastic figurine please. And I swear if "Hero Mode" is locked behind the Ganondorf figure I'm not even going to waste any money on this used.
Going to be honest. Was not gonna buy this as I can play a much, much, MUCH prettier fan-made HD modification of this game on my PC (With my own legally purchased copy of Twilight Princess, I will clarify), but Hero Mode may just change my mind. 3D Zeldas are just too easy nowdays.
Kind of a shame I'll have to pick it up used if they're going to lock something as important as an entire dungeon behind a plastic toy that will likely be scalped to high heaven. Can't be directly supporting anti-consumer bollocks like that.
Maybe they'll make it an unlockable in-game as it should be though. Nintendo seem to be getting more ballsy with Amiibo, and it is concerning me.
For everyone saying it deserves a 1, this is why you aren't a reviewer. It's the common mentality of "1 or 10."
1's are normally reserved for games that literally do not function or really should just not be up for sale. This is a functional game. I cannot speak for Nintendo Life nor their writers, but you must be fair when reviewing a game and not give it a knee-jerk score of 1 simply because "This is a bad game."
If you want an example of a 1, go check out Big Rigs: Over the Road Racing.
Edit: From what I can tell via NL's scoring policy, Four and lower are reserved for broken games. Is this game broken? I may have to re-read the review but I don't recall it mentioning the game was overly buggy or glitchy. Five is a fair score.
To paraphrase what a 5 means to the NL staff:
5 - Average
A five is where you really need to start wondering if this game is for you. We are saying this game is average in our own subjective opinion. You have to judge for yourself if you are so attracted to this game's concept that you are going to take a chance on it anyway. We'll always give our reasons to show why the game failed to impress.
Maybe they're bringing back the Bally Astrocade way of shipping things. Bally couldn't get the machines out in time so they sold vouchers for the holiday season where you could redeem the voucher for the Bally Professional Arcade video game console a few months down the line.
And yes, I'm being sarcastic, but that did happen.
@Zombo It has a single player mode, so good single player should be expected. If they were just going to halfarse the single player (Like they did) they should have kept it out entirely, like Four Swords.
This concerns me. Between this game failing to be any good (By Nintendo standards) and the uninspired looking Happy Home Designer, and Amiibo Festival, not to mention the insult that is Federation Force...
Is Nintendo getting lazy and succumbing to the Triple A Cash Cow disease? They'd best stop falling below their standards, I'm already very leery of the NX as is... I have a feeling I might regret this comment too, as it seems the fanbois are out in full force.
I don't understand why people want a Mario Sunshine HD remake. Mario Sunshine aged REALLY well because of the art style. Twilight Princess looks like garbage now because of the realistic look they tried doing on the Wii.
To people wondering what the salt part of the article was about. I'd say it's silently referring to how often American Nintendo fans get trolled by the company they support.
We all know it isn't referring to the "Take it with a grain of salt" for data mining because, well. Remind me the current score of datamining being true to false?
This is really surprising. I've known Nintendo for putting the utmost quality in their games, ESPECIALLY their two moneymakers Zelda and Mario. But this... This looks like they couldn't be arsed to put their trademark quality into it.
There isn't enough love for traditional Mario levels, the hard ones are overdone sadly. As for the future of Mario games, it's... Going to be interesting. By releasing Super Mario Maker they've essentially forced their hand. They can't just rehash New Super Mario Bros. with a couple new ideas again (Cough, NSMBU, cough) they're going to have to do something radically different.
I'd love to have this game on the Wii U. I came into this generation pretty lukewarm on indies, feeling their games weren't all that great. But here recently I've been playing a lot of Indie titles on my Wii U and I gotta say, I've really been missing out.
I'm alright with companies using ads to make an extra dime, however Adblock is basically a must nowadays, whether you want to support someone or not. Just by running an adblocker your computer becomes infinitely safer, and you don't have to worry about porn ads or fake download button ones. I disable it on certain websites that I know aren't going to throw harmful ads my way, but it's pretty much a requirement. The advertisers forced their hand on us once they started using pop-ups and malware infested ones.
Honestly, I'll just stick with using the tried and true browser. YouTube needs to stop trying to make some silly app with an interface that looks like it was slapped up in a few minutes by someone with no knowledge of design.
That being said, the only advantage it does have over the browser is to my knowledge the random "Could not load video, refresh page?" error doesn't happen on it. How about a patch to fix that instead?
Oh wow! Now see THIS is what I'm talking about, quality Mario levels rather than just some masochistic twit throwing blocks together to make a level "Impossibly hard." Those levels are good once in a while to challenge yourself but I prefer not having to skip a plethora of them every time I dare play 100-Mario-Challenge.
And yes, I know they were E-Reader levels, but still, can traditional-style levels in SMM get some love?
If I had to take a guess at the reason Xenoblade isn't on here...
I personally have barely even seen the thing marketed, much less mentioned. I don't even see much YouTube or social media coverage of it. This is without specifically looking for it, mind you, but that's the whole point of marketing.
I was really excited for it when they showed it off the first time, but I literally forget it exists until I play Smash and see Shulk. Then I'm reminded: "Oh yeah, isn't there a new Xenoblade coming out?"
Edit: Something I'd also like to mention. Look down at the bottom of this site, under the hot games label. No Xenoblade to be found at the time of writing. Which is rather jarring, if this site is anything to go by even the Nintendo fans aren't excited for it, at least a majority of them. And yet the godawful Devil's Third is on there, but I'd personally chalk that up to the controversy it drummed up to make a few extra sales for the title. That, or to take that list with a giant grain of salt.
Can we just all agree retailer exclusive Amiibo are just anti-consumer already? To the poor sods that still try to collect these things rather than just give up on them or get an Amiiqo, having to run to different stores just to complete their collection has zero benefit to them.
In fact, I'd argue Amiibo are anti-consumer themselves, locking content behind a physical toy that you have to jump through hoops to obtain in some regions? I know I'd personally rather have DLC that anyone can purchase without falling prey to scalpers. But I digress, that's a different topic.
@faint People really aren't reading my comment are they? That or it didn't come across very well. As I already stated to someone else:
Might want to read my post again mate, I never mentioned Nintendo. Perhaps it didn't come across clearly, but my 'used games' thing referred to any Pokemon Company game.
@Artwark Might want to read my post again mate, I never mentioned Nintendo. Perhaps it didn't come across clearly, but my 'used games' thing referred to any Pokemon Company game.
It's sad and very telling just how little this company appreciates their fan base. While making cash off someone's IP--- Wait, he made no money off of this? They're just suing because he used their characters on his posters?
Guys, seriously, get your head out of your arse. If you're going to go after a small fish like this I'd like to see you start doing something about all the other copyright infringement you so happily let slide on Google Play and the Apple App Store... You know, infringement that reaches much further and wider?
In my personal opinion we need a fourth level setting that can be toggled on or off for the 100-Life/10-Life runs. These masochistic course designs are nice and all but grouping them in with plain 'hard' courses is just silly.
Stuff like this that makes me glad ROM Hackers, and roms for that matter exist. People can downplay them and call them piracy all they'd like, but some pretty awesome things can come out of it too. Things that all too often get glossed over, such as translations that official companies will never do. Another awesome thing that came out of the community is a bugfixed edition of Final Fantasy on the Nintendo Entertainment System,as that game was definitely a deeply flawed masterpiece. And they even added sprites from Final Fantasy III and increased the character name limit to boot!
I'm still waiting for the day the JP-Exclusive version of MegaMan Battle Network 4.5 on GBA and Bahamut Lagoon on the Super Famicom get full-on, accurate fan translations.
Sega, please. You already had three utter disasters in the hardware spectrum. You sure didn't need a fourth.
Come to think of it, it's too bad they didn't have this as their fourth. Maybe they would have went under and Sonic wouldn't have been reduced to the garbage it is nowadays. Maybe all their other franchises would have been sold off and new games other than half-hearted Sonic ones could have been made.
....Can we go back in time and convince Sega to pull the trigger on this?
Konami? Who is... Oh, you mean that publisher with the same name who put out all sorts of awesome games in the 80's and 90's? Shame about their mid-2000 death. No idea who these people are but they sure aren't any Konami I know.
Only speed runners need apply? After the recent TAS takedowns by Ninty's criminally out of touch PR people, I don't think they'll be applying for anything.
@Galenmereth A very good point. I'm so against it myself though because it offers no benefit to the customer in return for the negative effect of region-locking.
Region-locking is such an ugly, greedy practice that had no place in 2011, let alone 2015. Seriously, screw region-locking. All it does is force you to buy more than one system to play games from a different locale. Wake up and smell the coffee, folks.
Even if this exploit allowed for piracy (which it DOESN'T, contrary to all the white knights coming to the big N's defense on this one) I wouldn't mind all that much. While I don't like piracy of relevant titles, it'd be just retribution for the greedy practice of region-locking in the first place.
Though it does beg the question. If these updates aren't stopping the homebrew, what /are/ they doing? It''s obvious stability is just a scapegoat excuse by now.
Here's hoping he does a better job than Iwata. I loved Iwata as a person but loathed his business decisions. The Wii U and "New" Nintendo 3DS are just walking marketing disasters, yet great consoles.
