Re: Nintendo Denies Lobbying Japanese Government Over AI, Will "Take Necessary Actions" Over IP Rights

Xeno_Aura

@breach187 I think the problem is that the humans who wrote the info on those sites that AI stole will no longer write, because those humans don't work for free.

Websites predominantly rely on advertisements to pay their staff, their staff write content, AI steals the content written, people no longer visit the website, the website no longer can pay staff, staff are let go, AI no longer has content to steal. Internet dies.

That's the theory anyway, and it's proving true so far, with the number of sites going down and layoffs that are happening.

In the case of NL, for example, if Google's AI summarizes their game reviews and news in an AI summary, then NL will get paid nothing for their work, as most people will just read that AI summary and not click on NL, thus not giving NL any ad revenue. Eventually, NL would have to close, no more reviews or news.

Re: Review: Slave Zero X (Switch) - Slick, Stylish, But A Hot Mess On Switch

Xeno_Aura

@Vyacheslav333 Game Maker Studio is designed for 2D games, however. So doing a 3D game in Game Maker just isn't a great idea, the graphics pipeline isn't designed to handle 3D which is why it runs slowly.

Unity from a technical standpoint is much better for a 3D game, from an ethical standpoint, maybe not so much.

Unreal Engine games can be blurry, but that's usually developers using a low resolution to make the game run on Switch and then applying something like TAA, which won't work well with low resolutions and framerates. Unreal Engine games can look fine on the Switch, but a lot are blurry because they're trying to run very high-end games on a very low-end system. As Slave Zero X isn't a high-end game, using Unreal Engine 4 for it, for example, should have been perfectly fine on the Switch.

Even Nintendo use Unreal Engine for their games on the Switch now.

Re: Review: Slave Zero X (Switch) - Slick, Stylish, But A Hot Mess On Switch

Xeno_Aura

Unfortunately, the developers decided to use Game Maker (a 2D game engine) for Slave Zero X, as that was the application their lead dev was most familiar with, instead of using something more suited to this style of game like Unity or Unreal.

That's likely why there are performance issues. It's the same on PC, the Steam Deck, for example, struggles to hold 60 FPS at certain points in the game, even with the max power settings. It's kind of unacceptable for a largely 2D game with 3D backgrounds.

They designed their own 3D methods to use in Game Maker, but it isn't optimized for it, and Game Maker also can only support 1 thread, so it doesn't make use of multiple CPU cores/threads, so it's hard to say which is the issue on the Switch.

Re: Random: This Drink Driving Game Is A Nasty Blemish On The Switch eShop

Xeno_Aura

Yeah, as RG-Riven said, age ratings on digital storefronts are set by the developer, not PEGI themselves. When submitting to MS Store, Steam, PS Store, or Nintendo eShop, you fill out a survey of your game's content and it generates an automatic age rating.

So the age rating being incredibly inaccurate is first the developer's fault for lying, and then Nintendo's fault for giving the game the greenlight.

Nintendo really needs to get a tight rein on their eShop. They approve incredibly poor and stupid games, but I've known legitimate developers have their games refused by them.

Re: Review: Gang Beasts - An Adorably Janky Brawler Arrives Late To The Switch Party

Xeno_Aura

Yeah, think it was a bit late in Gang Beasts life to release it on Switch. I hope it does well, but I can't imagine many people haven't already had a go with it, and it is the kind of game that you get bored of within the hour really.

I had it on Game Pass on my Xbox, played it a handful of times with friends, but I don't think we'd ever go back to it now we've experienced it.

Re: Mini Review: Project Winter - Social Deduction That Survives But Doesn't Thrive On Switch

Xeno_Aura

@Williamfuchs420 I believe this uses their own voice chat system not Nintendo's. So I believe you can use a wired headset plugged into your Switch. You'd have to get confirmation from someone who has played though. But given how voice chat in this game works (private channels, as well as proximity chat) I don't believe Nintendo's system would work at all.

And yes you would on PC, although typing is naturally much faster on PC anyway. And I think PC users are more likely than anyone to have equipment with a microphone.

Re: Mini Review: Project Winter - Social Deduction That Survives But Doesn't Thrive On Switch

Xeno_Aura

@Orangezap89 This isn't really related to Nintendo, it's more of a console issue.

PS/Xbox will have the same issue as Switch, where a headset is mandatory, and if you don't own one you're not going to be able to play a game like this.

Not saying the Switch doesn't have bad support for voice chat in general, but in this specific case, Switch has the same support as Xbox/PS.

I'm surprised Among Us works on Switch without voice chat, but Among Us does have the advantage that you can only talk when the game is "paused", Project Winter never pauses, so it relies on fast communication, like the review says, if you stop for 20-30 seconds to type out a message, you're dead.

Re: Wreckfest Brings Destructive Demolition Racing To Switch This Fall

Xeno_Aura

@nhSnork It is made by the Flatout 1, 2 and Ultimate Carnage devs, they just don't own the rights to the Flatout name anymore.

Plays pretty good on PC, although I found the console release a little more limited than PC. The amount of AI allowed in multiplayer is limited on Xbox compared to PC for example. Possibly moreso on Switch.

Re: It Appears This Mario Party Superstars Minigame Has Been Adapted For Accessibility

Xeno_Aura

@Anti-Matter The boards are from the N64 games (Mario Party 1-3).

The minigames are at least from the N64 and Gamecube Mario Parties. It looks like they might have not featured minigames from Mario Party 8-10 (but 8-10 are the worst entries anyway). But there's at least one minigame from Mario Party 7 in the game. Most of the ones shown in the trailer were from Mario Party 1-3 from what I've seen.

MP2 & 3 are one of the best MP's though (Mario Party 1 not so much). I prefer them to Mario Party 4, and they're definitely better than Mario Party 8, 9 & 10, and in my opinion, Super Mario Party. Pretty much only 5-7 beat MP 2 and 3.

Re: The Next Numskull Presents Showcase Will Reveal Two New Switch Games

Xeno_Aura

Wish I could believe in Clive n Wrench.

It's been in development over 10 years now, which is an awful long time for a game. It was originally meant to be a Wii U game, but missed the mark massively.

The official website still lists release as 2020 too, so it doesn't look like they really know when they plan to launch.

It's listed as Spring 2021 on Steam, but looks unlikely to meet that date, and the developers have communicated nothing on Steam in several months now.

Re: Pokémon HOME June Update Will End Compatibility With Select Smartphones

Xeno_Aura

Likely this is due to SDK's updating, and Google/Apple pushing for newer OS support, rather than anything specific to the app itself.

Newer IDE's for making programs are gradually removing support for older Android/iOS versions, and Google are changing restrictions on apps on 1st August, which has forced some app developers to update to newer versions of software they were using, it's possible they can't support Android 5 anymore because of this.

Apple in general don't like you supporting older iOS versions. New apps probably don't allow you to support iOS 8 for example. I know in 2019 at least, support for iOS 7 was removed from new apps.

Only about 5% of Android devices still run Android 5 and lower, so it's doubtful the developers see this as a platform worth supporting still, especially if it poses problems. That number will be below 5% when June comes around.

Re: Forager Team Retaliates After Lead Dev Blames Them For Cancelled Multiplayer

Xeno_Aura

@KateGray In my games, I generally credit people where-ever possible, just to be safe. But I also usually don't do this type of business, where you're contracting someone for an extended period of time (several months). I always pay a flat-fee for a specific piece of work I want doing, to avoid any misunderstandings about contracts and fees.

For sure I know that Gabe/Lazyeye was the main guy who got the game to a release state. He said when the game had thousands of items, it slowed to a crawl, so he had to rewrite the looting and item system so that it would work on a large-scale.

But it is a valid question, Hopfrog is a company, with only 1 staff member, the lead dev of Forager. Technically his company made the game, using contracted workers. So does the credit lie with his company, or the workers? And how much work did his company do versus how much the workers did? Probably a question we can't answer.

At the very least, Forager's credits put the programmers under "Additional Programmers", so the game itself (at least once you're in it) never claimed to be the work of 1 man.

Re: Forager Team Retaliates After Lead Dev Blames Them For Cancelled Multiplayer

Xeno_Aura

I'm fairly familiar with Foragers development, and for sure the guy didn't develop it solo.

He got it close to the end, and then said he couldn't get the game to work how he wanted, so began to outsource the development of the game to other programmers who were more capable. Most specifically he struggled with optimizing the game to run at acceptable speeds.

Vadim is very well known in the community as a very competent network programmer, and has added multiplayer to a few high-profile games, him asking for a contract doesn't surprise me given the high-profile nature of Forager too, if you're doing business on this level, you NEED a contract, if the developer doesn't give you one, something is wrong.

Given Vadim's track record, and the fact that the main developer seems to forget he couldn't have released the game without the help of the lead programmer he hired before the game released, I'm very put off by this guys attitude.

TL;DR, If you want multiplayer in your Game Maker game, Vadim is your go-to guy, he is listed in the Game Maker Community forums as the multiplayer guy, officially, and is the only one to hold that title. If he couldn't make Forager multiplayer, I doubt it was really his fault, as he's made countless games multiplayer in the past.

Re: Story Of Seasons: Pioneers Of Olive Town Is Getting Patched, Following Difficult Launch In Japan

Xeno_Aura

Yeah, I think SDV kind of eliminated HM and SoS as competitors sadly.

I was always a fan of HM games, I think the only thing that they offered over what SDV does is more interesting characters. I wasn't particularly attached to any of SDV's characters, but I guess it was 1 guy writing dialogue for so many people, as well as working on 101 other things.

Still holding out hope for Rune Factory 5 this year though. RF is a little different to SDV, so might still hold my interest.

Re: Review: Hotshot Racing - A Fantastic Ode To The Days Of Virtua Racing, Ridge Racer And Daytona USA

Xeno_Aura

@OorWullie Horizon Chase Turbo is the Console port of Horizon Chase, which was an Android/iOS game, so that's probably why.

But they based it off of Top Gear 1 & 2, which were my favourite childhood games, so I loved it haha. They also had collectibles on track, although they weren't mandatory for highscore, they were just money to spend on upgrades and collectible nitros (same as HCT).

Re: F-Zero 'Spiritual Successor' Kickstarter Makes Classic Crowdfunding Mistakes

Xeno_Aura

I don't think "Dave" will be receiving any of my money.

This game doesn't sound like it's very well thought through or planned, they're setting very ambitious goals for themselves. Such as promising 1080p 60FPS gameplay before they've even started, it's impossible for them to know at this point whether they can pull that off, seeing as it looks like they haven't even started making the game.

EDIT: Oh nevermind, the games been cancelled already. Well done guys, think you just lost everyone's confidence in you even more...

Re: Pokémon Jukebox Arrives For Free on Android Devices in the West

Xeno_Aura

@Zombie_Barioth Seems I was wrong. On GameFAQ's the majority of people said Nintendo owned Game Freak with a 54% share.

The only things I could find out, is that Nintendo own a minority share in Creatures Inc.

Nintendo own 32% of the Pokemon Company, but they also own the Pokemon trademark and logos. So overall Nintendo have the most force behind them, seeing as they own 32% of the Pokemon Company, own part of one of the other 2 companies involved in Pokemon, and own the trademark rights to the Pokemon logo and Pokemon branding.
