You know when you listen to a particular song that makes you feel like you're in a music video, even though you're actually just shopping for lentils in your local grubby cornershop? Well, now you can be the star of your own music video. Sort of. Not really. Kinda?
Songs For A Hero is a musical RPG in which the lyrical soundtrack says exactly what you're doing, while you're doing it. It sounds pretty grating, doesn't it?
Well, according to the largely positive Steam reviews, it's not — the music is praised for its "funny lyrics" that are "well-written and just a pleasure to listen to". Songs For A Hero is also described in the reviews as a love letter to the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive era of games, while simultaneously making fun of its own clichés... through song.

The developer, Dumativa, is a Brazilian studio who first brought the game to life in Brazilian Portuguese, and although the "Definitive Edition" that's on Switch is in English, both the written and sung words can be changed back to Brazilian Portuguese.
The Definitive Edition also includes the DLC, which adds an epilogue campaign, a new "haunted" campaign with "plenty of heavy metal and rock'n'roll", and a campaign inspired by Brazilian Samba.

Whether this jam is your jam or not, you have to admit: the amount of lyrics that had to be recorded for this game must be astronomical.
Songs For A Hero is out now on the Switch eShop.

Sounds like fun! Gonna pick it up.
This is literally a Brentalfloss platformer. Dynamic music for an action platformer is a cool idea. The vocals completely ruin it.
@Broosh Now Im disappointed that he wasn't the one doing the vocals.
I laughed out loud at the underwater part.
Saw Simpleflips play this on stream a few months ago, was a good watch.
The music is pretty good and the lyrics are comical/funny, I'd say it's worth picking up, although I'm not sure you'd replay it again once you've finished it once, a lot of the charm is in the lyrics, and that likely gets lost after you've heard it all before.
Nope nope nope nope nope.
Sounds like a good time. I'm down for it.
With all the competent singers on the planet, this is the best they could find? Even if it turns out to be the greatest RPG In history, there is no way I could listen to that singing voice more than the 20 seconds I lasted with the trailer.
Now what if BTS did all the songs.......
This seems like something I'd actually find more annoying than humorous.
It also seems like a candidate for a Super Rare Games release, it feels like something they'd release.
I love this game, it is really good, people who say it will be annoying need to play!
Even though, like some others here, i wasn't the biggest fan of the sound of the singer, i took it as "well it's supposed to be that over-the-top" and i started really enjoying it. The underwater part also killed me, hahaha. Definitely want to play this!
"And it's Brazilian-made!"
With that tag line I knew it would be a Kate Gray article and I was not disappointed.
This is so funny. Not convinced the singer is reacting to your actions (more like what part of the level you are at) but happy to be wrong because come on, it's a neat idea if it works.
Great game from my homeland!!!
It's pretty iconic 'cause it was born from a homage video made by a famous comedy channel that does tons of "nerdy" content and, as far as I'm aware, A Lenda do herói was the first project of this scope in the country.
And for the people complaining about the singer, well, He really is not the best singer and for some odd reason he decided to make a weird voice in the english version, the songs in portuguese sound much, much better (also with better rhymes and puns). If you need a reason to learn a new language this is a pretty good one.
Not really my kind of game at all, but the lyrics for the underwater level are great.
I was interested in it and watched the trailer video and decided if the actual gameplay was going to be continuously narrated like that I just would not be able to get through it.
Sounds awful.
I was totally interested after the trailer, and seeing it has a Portuguese soundtrack makes it a must!
That underwater singing killed me 🤣
Reminds me of Galavant. I may just have to give this a try.
Horizon Chase Turbo, Dandara, Kaze and the Wild Masks...all great brazilian games!
This is a game you play on mute
That underwater level killed me. I love the whole concept. I may not buy this immediately, but it's going on the watchlist.
@JasmineDragon
The underwater party has me sold. This seems like a must have!
how interesting, i also found the singing hard to listen to in the trailer, but everyone else who's played it seems to have no issue with it at all (could be the portuguese vocals being more appealing).
i wonder if the vocals works better in the practice of playing it rather than just hearing it yourself. im already warmed up to the vocals, its charming to imagine it as some guy playing a game and singing a tune in front of his tv. not the best singer but enough to make you chuckle
@wg2004 Didn't know Kaze and the Wild Masks was a Brazillian game. Very nice!
Loving the art style on this... it looks gorgeous. It's giving me real Wardner vibes, actually. I would buy this even without the lyrics gimmick.
so proud of my Country
@Octane I also thought that at first, but you'll be glad to be wrong
Ooo that sounds interesting — if they can pull it off without it being annoying, I'm so in.
I am not a fan of this voice actor which normally isn't a big deal, but here... it kind of is.
Hit me up if they ever do a Gilbert Gottfried DLC though, I'd buy that twice
I applaud developer for trying to be original when it seems like all the good ideas are taken, but this sounds to me only slightly better than cutting through cardboard and styrofoam with an unserrated knife.
