An upcoming update for Pokémon HOME will end the mobile app's compatibility with select smartphone operating systems, it's been announced.
The new update will arrive in June, with support for a number of Android and iOS smartphones set to come to an end. You can see the full list of the devices which will be affected below (thanks, Serebii):
- Android 5 (Lollipop)
- iOS 9, 10, and 11
- iPhone 5S and iPhone 6
Further details on the update are yet to be announced, so any information on new app features and the like will have to wait until a later date. If you're using a device running one of the operating systems listed above, however, be warned that you'll no longer be able to access the app following the update's arrival in June.

The app is cluncky, with an awful interface. For what it does, anything capable of managing lists should work.
This badly optimized app raise concerns about how good the gen 4 remakes will be, as the same developer is involved.
very silly given many features simply aren't available through the switch app. can't afford a new phone and certainly wouldn't upgrade to continue using Home so i suppose it's time to cancel that subscription!
@tankymctankus there’s a subscription? I feel so bad for you Pokémon fans...
@abdias For me the app does what it is supposed to be and works quite fine.
That old systems like Android 5 devices are no longer supported is understandable. I mean, the iPhone 5s is over 7 years old. Supporting old OS-Systems complicates and slows down development.
On top of that it is unsafe in general to still use these devices.
Likely this is due to SDK's updating, and Google/Apple pushing for newer OS support, rather than anything specific to the app itself.
Newer IDE's for making programs are gradually removing support for older Android/iOS versions, and Google are changing restrictions on apps on 1st August, which has forced some app developers to update to newer versions of software they were using, it's possible they can't support Android 5 anymore because of this.
Apple in general don't like you supporting older iOS versions. New apps probably don't allow you to support iOS 8 for example. I know in 2019 at least, support for iOS 7 was removed from new apps.
Only about 5% of Android devices still run Android 5 and lower, so it's doubtful the developers see this as a platform worth supporting still, especially if it poses problems. That number will be below 5% when June comes around.
@Abweegee to be fair it's an optional 'premium' package but you need it to store more than 30 pokemon online and to transfer pokemon from older games. a real shame because many of the same services used to be free in their games so it was odd getting back into pokemon on switch and transferring pals up from my ds games and then suddenly having to pay for pokemon bank on 3ds and the Home premium on switch to bring them across
The digital age, people. Behold.
@Giovanni "The list of supported devices for 2020 includes the iPhone SE, 6S, 7, 8, X (ten), XR, XS, XS Max, 11, 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max."

@Xiovanni
Every IOS version has a cut off point, they don't support them forever. Also if you're a developer you're eventually going to be forced to make any updates only available on the newer IOS. It's just how it is.
Also it shouldn't be particularly surprising that these phones are no longer supported. We're talking about a phones that were released in 2013/14 here, on both the Android and IOS side. There is an argument to be had about the disposable nature of tech but at the same time.... I'd be very surprised if anyone complaining under this article holds onto their phone for 6/7 years.
Especially if they're into Pokemon because if you had a phone that old you would've upgraded for Pokemon Go a few years back......
iOS is completely screwed. Android has the advantage of 3rd-party app stores to bypass that barrier. It might screw up their phones, but it's better than getting left behind completely.
Nothing to see here, this is pretty normal. If your smartphone is 7 years old then this isn't going to be the first app to have left you behind.
Those are very old devices, I feel like most people have newer phones than that and those that don't likely have little need for Pokemon Home as they probably aren't tech savvy.
Things pokemon fans should actually complain about more
@Xiovanni The single OS still gets version updates. Thats the same strategy they have with Windows 10. And theres stuff on Windows 10 that doesn’t work unless your version is up to date.
Thats the same strategy all mobile OS use. Android 5 is a version number. iOS 9 is a version number. They arent a new OS. Its just Windows 10 is the name of the OS. Where as Android and iOS doesnt have have a number in the name. Like Windows 95 isn’t the 95th version of Windows. But it did get several version updates.
Android and iOS are basically Windows 1. Its the first OS, they never made a second one.
Imagine being one of the people mad about this.
Why are people angry/upset
1: Old systems are unstable and unable to be updated eventually.
2: Everyone using this app is most likely has a switch, so just get the app on that.
3: I’ve seen people angry about not being able to use it with pokémon go. That’s cool and all until you notice most of the devices being discontinued aren’t even supported by pokémon go.
Just move on.
@abdias I still have the notification to redeem zarude, which I have months ago...
@Xiovanni I liked MS phones but the interface was offputting, they insisted so hard on those damn tiles... If they opted for a more traditional UI I think they could have thrived
@MaxlRoseGNR The app is very inconsistent when it comes to functions on switch and smartphone. You can't favorite Pokémon on the switch, only on the phone. You can't change box names or move Pokémon between Boxes on the phone, only on the switch. It just doesn't seem to be well thought out when you want to change box names/sort Pokémon but you need to use the switch for that even though you have your phone in your hand with Pokémon Home. Pure inconvinience despite the App being on the Phone and switch too. Pokémon Home should have the same functions on switch and the smartphone.
@Yorumi It's very inexpensive compared to other similar services, don't you people have jobs? Do you pay for delivery? Cable? Internet? Etc? Services aren't free, people have such a false sense of entitlement that everything should be free, it's sad.
@abdias I've got an iPhone SE (2020) and it runs perfectly fine.
@ECHIDNA they clearly don't play Pokémon Go or use Home then because I've transferred a ton of Meltan from Go to Home. Doing so nets you a special Melmetal even.
Welcome to the world of smartphones and forced obsolescence.
It never worked at all for me on my Nokia 3310
Guys - do you think I should upgrade? Maybe get a Galaxy S3 or something?
Cool, will go nicely with the Zune I'm saving up for.
@Pres_Shinra The live tiles were what made WP special. Take those away and then it's no different than any other phone. The problem with WP wasn't the live tiles. It was Microsoft being late to the smartphone game (or at least the modern smartphone game) and most unfortunately not getting heavy hitter apps to get on board in a timely manner. When they finally did, they tended to be poorly done, lacked support comparable to their Android iOS apps, were web apps in disguise or everyone had moved on to the next big thing
