Earlier today, a blog post was uploaded to the Japanese site for Bokumono - short for Bokujō Monogatari, the Japanese name for the Harvest Moon/Story of Seasons series. In the blog, producer Dai Takemura spoke about the reception of Story of Seasons: Pioneers of Olive Town, a game that's been mired in complaints since its release in Japan last week.
In our own preview, we mentioned long loading times, uneven framerate, flat characters, and poor balancing - and some of these problems will be addressed in a mid-March patch, according to Takemura.
In his letter, Takemura thanks fans for their patience and their support, and apologises for the game not meeting their expectations. The immediate fixes coming in March are as follows (translation by Nintendo Enthusiast):
- Shorten some of the loading time
- A bug that makes the player freeze when connecting online
- A bug that makes the player freeze after waking up the pet and leaving the house
- A bug that makes the player freeze after taking out a fishing rod in the mines
- Various fixes for other issues and bugs
Later patches and updates will include more long-term fixes for the game (translation/summary by Reddit user mirukushake):
- Revising and adding dialogue
- Improving maker system
- Appropriate changes to things that reduce immersion
- Game balance adjustments
- Other ongoing bug fixes/improvements
Our preview may not have been particularly positive, but here's hoping that these fixes can improve the game by the time our review is ready.
Are you heartened to see that the developers are fixing the game? Has this affected your plan to buy Story of Seasons: Pioneers of Olive Town? Let us know in the comments.

I hope the patches fix more of the glaring issues with the game but I doubt they can fix their business practices considering the DLC will flesh out the world.
@nessisonett I have so little hope left... but still, I cling to it like a life raft
@KateGray So would you say at the moment harvest moon one world is the better farming game to get this month? My partner loves the farming games so want to get her one this month but can't decide which one to get
@UltimateOtaku91 Do not buy any of Natsume's farming games.
@UltimateOtaku91 unfortunately, we haven't had our hands on it yet :/ So, it's hard to say! Will SoS get better with the patches? Did Harvest Moon actually beat Story of Seasons for once? I don't know.
HM doesn't have same-sex marriage, for one, and historically it's always been the worse of the two. It's also not promising that there are barely any reviews available on the internet.
This Reddit post goes into some detail, if you don't mind spoilers: https://www.reddit.com/r/harvestmoon/comments/lv4ei2/harvest_moon_one_world_gameplay/
@UltimateOtaku91 Try Story of Seasons Friends of Mineral Town instead. A remake somewhat simpler in scope but a better presentation in most regards.
@UltimateOtaku91 Get Farm Together! It’s absolutely amazing, I just found it a few weeks ago.
I have Stardew Valley and ACNH already. I tried Friends of Mineral Town and it was just okay. It felt very basic, which, given it was a remake of a GBA title, I shouldn't be surprised.
But I feel like SV and ACNH have spoiled me and made me expect a certain level of quality from these games that isn't fair to them. SV and ACNH are such stellar A+ games that most other competition can't match them.
@JissuWolfe I have heard good things about that game though. Have you played ACNH and SV? How does it compare to those titles?
Yeah, I think SDV kind of eliminated HM and SoS as competitors sadly.
I was always a fan of HM games, I think the only thing that they offered over what SDV does is more interesting characters. I wasn't particularly attached to any of SDV's characters, but I guess it was 1 guy writing dialogue for so many people, as well as working on 101 other things.
Still holding out hope for Rune Factory 5 this year though. RF is a little different to SDV, so might still hold my interest.
@Burning_Spear already bought that game last year and she liked it, she also enjoyed my time at portia and rune factory 4. But from what I've read the new story of seasons and harvest moon have both missed the mark this time.
Might be better off just waiting for rune factory 5
@Heavyarms55
Comparing farm games to SV is like comparing Burger King to the best meal you’ve ever had. It’s not about being better, it’s about if you value variety and want to try something new that has no chance of dethroning the best.
Part of this is completely fair … SV is one of the most incredible gaming experiences I’ve had, and that’s an opinion shared by millions. But there is also a really unfair part here, something that happens all the time … you can’t compare a day one release with a game that’s been getting 4 years of patches by a developer so dedicated he sold off the next game he was working on to continue to patch SV. Dah, the game with 4 years of polish feels more polished. Also water is wet and life sucks.
So if you’re content playing SV and AC for the rest of your life, honestly, you probably couldn’t pick a better two games. But if you just can’t start up your 10th farm and or redesign your island for the 50th time, you’re going to have to accept the next game isn’t going to be nearly as good, especially at release.
That said, it looks like you would have better options then Olive town. And that's where the release conversation should happen ... how does this compare with the other tier 2 options. Right now I would argue that what I've seen this game looks like bad "My Time at Porta", so I would have a real hard time suggesting it over a lot that's already out there.
@JissuWolfe just watched the trailer and it looks good, depending on price il get it tonight
Well, we know every Bokumono games by Marvelous always have their issues.
These are the examples.
Tree of Tranquility = Calvin's 5 heart event Freeze
Animal Parade = Permanent Missing child glitch, fps = 20
@UltimateOtaku91 I'd wait for Rune Factory 5.
Hopefully they fix these issues. I'm still getting it anyway. I am genuinely excited for this game. I tried Stardew and Animal crossing but could not get into either of those games.
How can those sub GameCube looking elements take so long to load... 😂
Is freinDs of mineral town switch good. I was watching peanut butter gamers videos on harvest moon and got interested is it a good way to start in the series or should I get one of the new ones.
@HeadPirate It's not about valuing variety or not. I don't lack for games to play. So it's about choosing from the many options and whether or not this makes the list of options. It's a question of, should I even put this on the list of considerations or not?
From what I am reading in a few areas, this game is not worth the consideration.
I have Stardew Valley for my life sim fix, I doubt any other game could really compare for me, it's one of my all time favs.
Just get stardew valley. This and Harvest Moon look awful
I cancelled my preorder due to underwhelming response to this game. Sad, considering Story of Seasons has been pretty good up until this.
Like others, I will wait for Rune Factory 5
Yesh! Hoping day one patch for the west. I feel bad for the director but I am glad this is getting done. I don’t want anything coming between my farm and Laura...except Iris.
Holding onto my preorder for dear life (and plushie)!
@Heavyarms55 played both. It’s definitely more “similar” to Stardew, but if anything it actually resembles the good old days of Farm Ville and Frontier Ville on Facebook except with zero microtransactions. It’s only $20 too, I already have 40 hours into it.
@UltimateOtaku91 it’s only $20, it’s fantastic
@Burning_Spear please try out harvest moon one world, i advise to not go on just a bit of critique (note; go by real criticism that the people who have played the game have stated), i actually own the game, got it early tbh and the games...much better than pioneers of olive town - i wouldn't be stating such a thing if natsume did something actually good this time and they did.
the issues with pioneers of olive town have literally been fixed in harvest moon one world(examples ; not being able to see the items you receive are present in one world, the food that you eat looks like the food that you are eating, the portraits are 3d characters but my gosh does it have a more alive anime cute feeling to it, the farming is weird..from what i've noticed they took a short cut which will possibly make people sad about it and that is you already have a tilled up farm area from what i've seen so far playing the game, the game also just bluntly pops up the tools you need by clicking on the tilled soil you want to interact with, and yes you can switch between seeds) but yeah lol. now i am not stating that one world is 10/10 i would give it a solid 7/10 because i noticed that natsume actually tried this time and the game is really good, it just has it's problems.
the problems are there but..really if natsume would've taken more time, kept working on the game's graphics, added more alive feeling in the world itself - surroundings basically i seriously believe this game would've gotten a 9/10 or a 10 but since natsume wants to compete >_>" that didn't happen.
i honestly am surprised that i like one world more than pioneers of olive town...very sad because i adore the real franchise story of seasons..i gave natsume games a try but i gave up after the Minecraft rip off lmao. yet here i am telling people to please try it out for yourself, like if you have anyone near you who has a copy of the game ask them if you could test it out if you feel comfortable with hands-on, now if you are okay with gameplay there is a small youtuber who uploaded a 3-hour gameplay of it. it was nice watching, hearing his criticism he had to give it lol it was funny too.
i am honestly glad this game is finally receiving the update that really shouldn't have occurred at all, but since developers decided to get a new guy instead of a person that knows story of seasons, - already can help out. - the new producer must have a) rushed the devs, b) worked with the dev team, told them that this hot mess was a great idea and the devs went along with it lol. i can obviously tell just like some folks on reddit noticed that this was a mobile game, i feel like in development they must've had arguments and they were trying to make this game have 'money system' in it because why else would the internet be needed on the loading screen other than seeing pictures??? the game feels more lenient towards that direction when you play it and i realized it myself when i went to play the japnese version...i really am sad that this is how low story of seasons went by especially on it's 25th anniversary.
oh by the way the new producer wasn't harassed at all, the only reason from the sheer obvious acts he has done on his twitter account, - he deleted every bit of evidence for people can view what really went on the whole entire questions/criticism he got was to hide it.
i don't know how obvious the man can be, especially when you also realize that the game is missing stuff, the dlc is going to be filling that there which is a scummy move to do -_- anyway i am getting way ahead of myself, but the man wasn't harassed if he was there would've proof right off the bat like i already stated he must've gotten frustrated players replying to the boasting tweet he had made on his twitter stating that pioneers of olive town is the best game ever in the franchise smh anyway if he did get harassed that is awful tbh like i get that you want the game to be good but you need to understand it's just a game at the end of it all. that isn't to state that these types of situations shouldn't be attended nor these games shouldn't be fixed or the developers or whoever did such actions, shouldn't be held accountable for the disaster that occurs in these games development - no, it should be discussed.
i am just saying, to chill down.
i am thinking of waiting until they release the updates for i can fully play the game,, cause i do got it with me in english..i just don't know.
@JissuWolfe hmm thanks for the info!
After all this time, you'd think that the studio gained enough experience to at least produce a technically sound title...
It's not their first rodeo on the switch, they already worked on weaker hardware, it's not their first 3D game...
When's the point where someone sits down and goes: "Optimization and polish...we could use some of it!".
@MidnightLaces I appreciate the suggestion. I've looked into One World and am not intrigued. The landscapes are barren and drab, and I'm not interested in the idea of stuffing my farm into my pocket and moving it about the planet.
I played Natsume's Light of Hope and gave it a good, long, fair shot. I did not appreciate how the farming was complicated with different soil types and undefined fertilizers. And there was no progression after about 10 hours of play; nothing interesting left to unlock. But what killed it for me was the dialogue and character models. I found them cringeworthy and would grit my teeth throughout the tediously long cutscenes. Natsume got a fair shot from me and won't get another.
@UltimateOtaku91 in reply to your initial comment-- I was planning on buying both. While I felt past Harvest Moon games (those exclusively made by Natsume) have been faulted/disappointing, One World is very fun! They also have DLC to expand on the game currently. I am in a fb group with about 200 other people who bought it and thus far everyone has enjoyed it. I'd say it depends on her play style though. One World feels like Harvest moon meets Pokemon or some adventure style game. The map is very expansive and you have tasks to do for people in every town. So, it has a slightly different feel. However, you still farm, have relationships, have animals--can even have wild animals as pets, travel, have harvest wisps (like Harvest Sprites), etc. There is a lotttt of dialogue, especially initially, but it can be sped up or skipped.
I suggest giving it a try if she also likes adventure style games in addition to farming games.
@Amstra89 thanks for the reply, yeah she likes games like zelda, pokemon, rune factory, fantasy life etc
I ended up buying it last night just in time to get the pre order key ring lol should be here today or tomorrow
As a big fan of the series i'm still getting it but i'm keeping my expectations in check after the mixed reception.
RF5 has been looking more promising since the first reveal trailer, while i like both SoS and RF games i think RF5 has a higher chance of being the best of the two this generation.
@UltimateOtaku91 oh, good! I hope she enjoys it!
Olive Town looks like it will be a disappointment. Story of Seasons Trio of Towns on the 3ds is my go to farming game. I didn't get on with Stardew due to preferring the general presentation and crop mechanics of Story of Seasons. I guess I've been playing the series too long to switch over to another one.
@Burning_Spear ah at least you gave it a try, and yes that is true if they could have continued to work on the game, polished it up well with some help if they needed some - the game could have looked more better then this, but they rushed it -_-" which irks me when game companies do this type of move.
ahhh yeah light of hope was garbage lmao i skipped that game xD i couldn't stand it.
i do love one world, i gave it a chance, and it's pretty nice and cute, i am still, course waiting for the 1.5 update patch notes for pioneers of olive town, although i am disappointed to state that there will be possibly no potraits which upsets me the most because how can you have a new team(instead of the old one) work on a story of seasons game, a - game you know knowledge about, has been great with it's potraits and remove it from the new game??? bad idea, but a lot of folks on the jp side to the western side have been asking for this, and me as well....
just knowing it might not come out on the next update or if they're going to continue any updates on it really bums me out...i love my story of seasons <3. i just don't like it that they ditched the actual creators to get new people that didn't know what the heck they were doing to begin with at all..it's why the game originally turned out like crap.
my sources come from reddit, someone shared the information from the japanese site that discussed it.
