Between the image of joy cons with musical notes and the article indicating that "each connected controller will play a sound when you press the rear buttons", you make it sound like the controllers themselves are emitting noise, either via speakers (that they don't have) or with the HD rumble (which is supposed to be quieter this time around). Might want to clarify that it's the console producing noise.
It is absolutely insane to me that Nintendo has once again released this game in it's non-optimized form. The best way to play this has always been on the Super Gameboy. With NSO featuring both GB and SNES games in the same subscription, it is unthinkable that they are once again peddling the inferior version. Guess what, Nintendo? When you repeatedly force paying customers to get screwed, people are going to keep stealing and emulating your games instead.
Full context please? How many other predictions did they make and how many of those were right? i feel like people only remember the predictions that were correct and forget the thousands that didn't come to pass ("Switch Pro" anyone?). This is how religions are formed, y'all.
i don't actually know what I hate more: All of the hundreds of articles that have come out over the last 6 years supporting "rumors" and "leaks", 75%+ of which are now confirmed false (but of course no one will remember that and anybody who randomly got the release date right this time around will probably be hailed as some kind of soothsayer/genius going forward), or all the articles flooding out this week about all the "confirmed information" which is actually just the writer going frame by frame through the release teaser we all watched and picking out details. Articles like this reek of desperation. Why can't anybody be satisfied to wait until we get official word anymore? There's lots more to do outside of digging for every shred of "information" on an upcoming console, people. Get a (second) hobby.
Edit: i just noticed the "Mario Kart 9 Guide" link, which i'm not going to click on, and... Wow. i can only imagine the in-depth advice given within. "Mario Kart 9 (assuming that's the name) will likely be some kind of racing game with at least one track. Dirt is involved, and it comes in at least one shade of tan. It will probably slow you down if you drive off the pavement, we assume. There might be items but that's just a guess."
Just like with Switch, i believe Nintendo will opt for less onboard RAM with a focus on games on cart while allowing for large SD card capacity for people that prefer to download their libraries. i voted for 128 GB, but i could see them offering between 64 and 256.
People will whine and bitch just like they did with the Switch, but the reality is it costs far less to support large SD cards than to put in an expensive SSD or similar long-term storage. Would you really rather have a console that costs $500+ like their competitors if it means you get a TB or two of space? SD card storage is cheap and expandable.
And this is why ROM storage sites and the emulation scene are so important. The companies that own and control distribution of these systems and titles don't seem to see any value in preserving the art that these games and apps are, so somebody needs to do it. It makes me incredibly angry whenever i see Nintendo strike down another preservation site when they refuse to provide an alternative legal means of obtaining many of the titles being wiped from history.
@Osmium I'm in the same boat, and I just noticed that after two straight days of maintenance to the Nintendo Store, they changed the message on the N64 product page so it no longer says more controllers will be available in 2022. This does not bode well. 🥺
@TheFrenchiestFry When I first got my Switch, I took it to work and showed it off playing BOTW in handheld mode. Some of my coworkers were rightly impressed that the graphics looked that good on a "handheld" system.
When editing a staff member's patrol route, the coloring of the highlighted squares is an extremely pale gray that is nearly impossible to see when blended in with the paths, scenery and and moving peeps and rides that are constantly flooding the screen. Additionally, if there are OTHER staff members with existing paths, THEIR routes are displayed in a brighter blue color which is much easier on the eyes. Why would they choose the worst possible color to be the ACTIVE employee's while making the other routes pop out more? It literally baffles the mind.
When raising or lowering terrain using the classic block style (useful for making sure you clear various ride elements for underground sections), you have to hold Y and then HOLD the analog stick for a second before anything happens at all. Then, when the ground does start to move, it jumps quickly between the different height levels, resulting in frustrating overshoots constantly. Why in the world can't you just tap the stick once to bump the level up or down a single tick??
When placing a flat ride or the initial track element, rotating the piece is done by holding Y (the placement button) and using left or right on the analog stick. Unfortunately, holding Y and pressing up or down on the stick is how you adjust the height, so good luck simply turning the piece without also accidentally raising or lowering it at the same time... They do realize the Switch is equipped with 4 different shoulder buttons that are literally labeled L for Left and R for Right, don't they??
I've thought of about 5 other examples of truly baffling UI design issues, but this post is already way too long, so I'll just share what is, in my opinion, the absolute tippy top of the giant turd they call their user interface... and that is... You can't delete custom track layouts.
Let me just clarify that in case it didn't sink in. You can save (an unlimited number of) custom track designs, and each time you do, a new design is saved, even if you already have a literally identical one stored. But you can never, EVER delete those designs, so I hope you like seeing entries like "Rollercoaster 1 (3)" filling up your track list every time you go to build a coaster of that type from then on.
Seriously, the only help I could find online was to delete your entire profile and/or reinstall the game completely. ... There are no words.
I could not disagree more about the control scheme. This feels like they tried to adapt a mouse-centric game to a gamepad and failed miserably to make it feel good or intuitive.
First off, who implements a selection pie-wheel system and then requires you to first hold a shoulder button, then hold the direction you want to select, then press an ADDITIONAL button to confirm? Why not confirm as soon as the shoulder button is released?
Then you have the fact that Y is used as the catch-all action button instead of A, which throws me off constantly. It's especially egregious when building a coaster track because Y places the next track piece but ALSO selects the track piece under the cursor, so depending on where the camera happens to be facing when you try to build the next part, you may just end up selecting a completely different section of the track. This happens to me ALL THE TIME.
Finally, I can hardly count the number of ways in which the UI just makes zero sense and can't fathom who in their right mind play-tested this and thought, "Yeah, that works wonderfully."
@Ryan Thank you for this. Just yesterday, I was literally browsing the enormous selection of games (and "games" like Night Vision... Ugh) on the eshop wondering how in the world we're supposed to find the gems among the shovelware. Having a trusted review site provide a short list of the games worth checking out is a huge help. You guys rock!
Hmmm... No touch screen, joy-cons can't be detached, ZR/ZL buttons are inaccurate and I'm positive it's lacking Amiibo and HD rumble support. Also, and it's close, but I think this may be even harder to play than the original Xbox due to the excessive size.
Yeah, this and the other lawnmower "game" are an offense to humanity and should be purged from the eShop immediately, along with banning the jokers who published it from ever doing so again. If anybody was foolish enough to buy this crap, Nintendo should apologize and refund them in full.
There are some truly phenomenal 3rd-party games on the eShop that deserve everyone's attention. The rest is garbage like this that just clogs the store and hides all the gems. Nintendo really needs to reintroduce at least a bare-bones policy requiring some minimum level of quality control, or this is just going to continue to happen and people will get fed-up with it.
We're rapidly approaching another video games crash at this rate, people, and that's not a situation we want to encourage.
I noticed the gray cubes, but didn't think anything of it. Honestly it makes the platform paths a bit more predictable, which is helpful considering how notoriously difficult those sections of the game are. I'm sure they'll have this patched out shortly.
@StevenG it's not nearly as easy as it may sound, since objects in a simulated space are just composed of impossibly-thin planes connected to each other by vertices which are simply a point in space with no mass. 3D rendering is great at drawing things, but not so great at enforcing physical laws, so it's typically up to the devs to handle collisions on the CPU by running lots of calculations to determine when an object is "inside" something else and what to do about it. These calculations take precious CPU cycles, especially in an open-world game like BOTW, so they have to strike the right balance between solidity of the game physics and implementing shortcuts to make the game playable on limited hardware. As 99%+ of players will never encounter these kinds of game-breaking glitches without trying, I'd say they did a great job.
@Fido007 Greed on both sides, huh? Lets see here...
Here's what Epic did to earn the money they get from Fortnite:
Develop a complex online arena game supporting a large amount of simultaneous players.
Design, model, decorate and animate huge playfields and many, many character and weapon models.
Design and record sound effects and music.
Balance, tweak and support an active game with a large playerbase.
Continually develop additional content to encourage more players to play.
Here's what Apple did to earn their 30% cut:
Create a storefront with pretty pictures of other people's games.
Does that seem like a reasonable split to you?
Don't get me wrong. I hate Fortnite. It's very derivative and filled with children. That doesn't mean it isn't a worthwhile product. Lots of people like it, even if I don't, and those people should be allowed to support it if they wish to do so. Apple (and Google) are taking advantage of an exclusive storefront hard-locked to restricted mobile devices to force Epic to give them an unfair cut of their profits. It would be like Walmart telling all the companies that provide the products they sell in their stores that they either have to fork over a much larger cut of their profits or get kicked out of the stores altogether. Except, in the case of Apple/Google, there aren't any other stores the client companies could send their products to instead, creating an unfair market environment which goes against the core tenets of a free market ecosystem.
I'm no fan of Epic, but I hope they ream the crap out of Apple. Apple's had it coming for a very long time.
@Gridatttack Do some research on monopoly laws. They exist precisely to prevent huge corporations like Apple from taking advantage of proprietary services like the app store in order to charge unreasonable fees or put undue burden on client companies who are forced to play by their rules or "get out." It is far from an open-and-shut case just because Apple makes all developers agree to an entirely one-sided contract for the privilege of using their marketplace.
@RedBlueSpot Correction: They've ALWAYS been anti-consumer. Their philosophy from the very beginning has been to make stuff that is 100% proprietary and then charge a ridiculous premium for the "privilege" of owning a device that cannot be upgraded, cannot play nice with any standardized hardware, is locked down as tight as they can get it, and bears a shiny Apple logo.
I hope that this legal battle costs them dearly and that people wake up and realize they're overpaying for an inferior product, but people are dumb, so that's not likely to happen anytime soon.
As a person who can't stand looking at usernames like xXx_D4rkSt4r-7465, I much prefer Nintendo's system. Sure, it's a bit inconvenient that you have to send across a long friend code when somebody wants to add you, but you have to do that exactly ONE TIME with each friend you want to add. In exchange, your handle can be Mario, or Mom, or whatever you want it to be, without having to decorate your super-original name with extra numbers and letters.
The main takeaway here should be that "blast processing" was referring to an unsupported coding technique that was never a part of the Genesis' specifications. It was a lie, plain and simple. Clever devs had been finding ways to use console hardware in unsupported ways to squeeze more out of the systems since at least the Atari 2600. What they did on the Genesis wasn't special, wasn't new and could also have been done on any other console including the SNES. Sega lied about what their console could do and what Nintendo's couldn't. One of the many reasons I was overjoyed to see them finally leave the console market for good.
Well, in fairness, the "price isn't cool" comment is obviously based on the fact that "Is Switch price ($299) less than UFO price (null)?" obviously returns false in SQL. On the other hand, so does the question "Is Switch price ($299) greater than UFO price (null)?"
@aznable Because slightly darkening a fictional character's skin tone is the same as smearing black makeup all over your face and putting bright makeup around your mouth? You millennials and your made-up offenses...
@Braok Good luck rendering anything close to an "open world" on the N64 without cutting the polys WAY back and replacing things like trees with 2D images. I think given the framing of that scene, if it were being rendered in real time rather than a recorded video (which would be very rare on an N64 cart), they'd have to make a lot of compromises just to get it to run at 15 FPS on the system.
@YessMasster And the right analog stick is a joke compared to a mouse for aiming. @RootsGenoa That's because it is. (when you add the mouse, obviously)
@Bunkerneath The IR was used from launch... With 1, 2, Switch. I forgive you for not knowing this.
Honestly the IR feature had been the weirdest thing about the system since launch. It can seemingly only detect shapes immediately in front of it, and when using the controllers normally, it's in a useless position. Seems to me that somebody at Nintendo had some cool sensor hardware they were playing around with and managed to get it included even though there's no real use for it.
I'm glad they found a purpose for it in Labo, but I feel like they could've done the same using buttons, motion control or the NFC reader.
My prediction on the first few months of games: Super Mario World (duh), Super Metroid, A Link to the Past, Mario Kart, Yoshi's Island, Earthbound. It they can swing it, I'd love to also see things like Super Mario RPG, Final Fantasy 3 (aka 6), Street Fighter II Turbo, Donkey Kong Country 1/2/3, etc. eventually.
What's even more wonderful is I can't connect to Bethesda's completely BS online service because I apparently have an account but don't know my password. Their forgot password feature doesn't work, and I have no idea what my password is because just like every other BS online service these days, you have to provide a lowercase letter, uppercase letter, number, urine sample, DNA sample, drug test, and three pieces of photo ID notorized by the pope. Hey, you know what, Bethesda? You're not Fort Knox. There are no spy organizations plotting to steal access to the 3,756th online service to be created (and likely crash and burn) in the past two years. How about you lighten the F up?
Yeah, this is complete BS. They do realize that the Switch is a MOBILE system which may be offline frequently, right? Are they complete morons, or what? The day id sold out to Bethesda is the day the company died.
Very disappointed in this game and this review. Between the boring single player gameplay and the aggressive pay-to-play monetization, this game deserves a 4/10 at best.
As someone who prefers downloading games over physical releases, the good faith shown here and the extra goodies make this a real temptation for a physical buy for me.
So we're getting Mario Maker 2, and all people can do is whine about what's not included? Entitled Millennials...
I know for most people game development is basically magic, but here's the bigger picture for you guys: Every costume they include has to have the following drawn, animated and tested: 1 standing frame 1 jumping frame 3 walking/running frames 1 stopping quickly frame 1 crouched frame 1 "up press" frame (optional) 1 death frame 2 pole/vine climbing frames 5 swimming frames 1 riding frame (for shoe/cloud)
This assumes they only support the costumes in SMB1 and they cannot be combined with other power-ups, as in SMM. If they wanted to include them in the other 2D games, they would need all the above for each game, plus:
And for just SMW: 1 looking-up frame 2 spin-jump frames 1 falling frame 1 victory pose frame 1 crouched-on-Yoshi frame 3 punching Yoshi frames 1 victory pose on Yoshi frame
Let's not even mention SMBU, which would require creating and animating an entire 3D model of each character...
And this doesn't include the new sound effects, custom death and end music tracks, or any of the frames necessary to animate the characters with SMM2's new features. (e.g. sliding)
Given that each of the 153 costumes they created for SMM involved this process, I can understand why they choose to forgo it in favor of adding more enemies and items in. I think it was the right choice.
And before you point out that they already have most of the work done for the existing costumes, they would still have to add things like sliding frames to those and undoubtedly you spoiled brats wouldn't be satisfied if they didn't add at least 100 more to the new game.
What? No mention that the cover image and game title text is lifted straight from Doom? I don't see the connection, but I'm guessing someone who worked on this game is a fan.
I'm skeptical that you'll be forced to use 2 joy-cons in 2-player edit mode, as that doesn't seem to make a lot of sense. Maybe if the joy-cons are being used as pointers or something? But then why are they sideways? The other possibility is the Switch is undocked, but other games allow non-joy-con controllers in this mode so maybe not.
Hopefully it's just a misunderstanding they clear up at E3.
I'm surprised you guys didn't notice/mention the clear hint they left in the direct that 3D Land will not be the only special game style. When they show the game selection at about the 9 minute mark, the text reads "Other Game Styles." That's styleS, with an S. My money is on them announcing SMB2 at E3, either included at launch or via DLC after the game is out.

Re: Random: Switch 2's Controller Settings Hide A Neat Musical Secret
Between the image of joy cons with musical notes and the article indicating that "each connected controller will play a sound when you press the rear buttons", you make it sound like the controllers themselves are emitting noise, either via speakers (that they don't have) or with the HD rumble (which is supposed to be quieter this time around).
Re: Nintendo's Wider Switch Joy-Con Design Was One Of Many Ideas That Never Saw The Light Of Day
@YessMasster And the right analog stick is a joke compared to a mouse for aiming.
@RootsGenoa That's because it is. (when you add the mouse, obviously)
Re: The Wireless SNES Controller For Switch Unlocks Super Mario World Sound Effects
Doesn't really how much it unlocks since Nintendo is incapable of keeping them in stock.
Re: Taito's Action Game Time Tunnel Joins Hamster's Arcade Archives Series
I've played it on MAME. It's not bad.
Re: Reminder: Wireless SNES Controllers For Switch Online Can Now Be Purchased (North America)
They're limiting this to online subscribers, limiting the number that can be purchased, but can't keep them in stock for one day? Ridiculous.
Re: GameStop Set To Close 180 - 200 "Underperforming" Stores This Fiscal Year
Good riddance.
Re: That Hidden LED Light On Your Nintendo Switch Controller Finally Has A Use
@Bunkerneath The IR was used from launch... With 1, 2, Switch. I forgive you for not knowing this.
Honestly the IR feature had been the weirdest thing about the system since launch. It can seemingly only detect shapes immediately in front of it, and when using the controllers normally, it's in a useless position. Seems to me that somebody at Nintendo had some cool sensor hardware they were playing around with and managed to get it included even though there's no real use for it.
I'm glad they found a purpose for it in Labo, but I feel like they could've done the same using buttons, motion control or the NFC reader.
Re: Switch SNES Controller Confirmed, Nintendo Switch Online SNES Games Next?
My prediction on the first few months of games: Super Mario World (duh), Super Metroid, A Link to the Past, Mario Kart, Yoshi's Island, Earthbound. It they can swing it, I'd love to also see things like Super Mario RPG, Final Fantasy 3 (aka 6), Street Fighter II Turbo, Donkey Kong Country 1/2/3, etc. eventually.
Re: You'll Need A Bethesda Account To Play DOOM And DOOM II On Switch
Re: You'll Need A Bethesda Account To Play The Classic DOOM Games On Switch
@CoastersPaul You know what would have made it better? No Bethesda logo.
Re: You'll Need A Bethesda Account To Play The Classic DOOM Games On Switch
Yeah, this is complete BS. They do realize that the Switch is a MOBILE system which may be offline frequently, right? Are they complete morons, or what? The day id sold out to Bethesda is the day the company died.
Re: Review: Dr. Mario World - A Fun Puzzler That Really Comes Alive In Online Multiplayer
Very disappointed in this game and this review. Between the boring single player gameplay and the aggressive pay-to-play monetization, this game deserves a 4/10 at best.
Re: Review: Dr. Mario World - A Fun Puzzler That Really Comes Alive In Online Multiplayer
@Chris The Wiiware release was called Dr. Mario Online Rx, not Dx. That's Rx as in a prescription.
Re: Guide: Switch Pro And Switch Mini: Everything We Know So Far
Don't mind me, I'm just waiting for Godot.
Re: Super Mario Maker 2 Currently Lets You Upload Just 32 Courses
Uh oh! Somebody call the waaaahhmbulance!! Only 32 of my pure garbage courses can be uploaded at once! Whatever shall we do!
Re: The Entirety Of Witcher III Will Be Squeezed Onto A Single Switch Cartridge
As someone who prefers downloading games over physical releases, the good faith shown here and the extra goodies make this a real temptation for a physical buy for me.
Re: All Those amiibo On Your Shelf? You Can't Use Them In Super Mario Maker 2
@Yorumi That was meant as a joke. I should've been more clear.
Re: All Those amiibo On Your Shelf? You Can't Use Them In Super Mario Maker 2
So we're getting Mario Maker 2, and all people can do is whine about what's not included? Entitled Millennials...
I know for most people game development is basically magic, but here's the bigger picture for you guys: Every costume they include has to have the following drawn, animated and tested:
1 standing frame
1 jumping frame
3 walking/running frames
1 stopping quickly frame
1 crouched frame
1 "up press" frame (optional)
1 death frame
2 pole/vine climbing frames
5 swimming frames
1 riding frame (for shoe/cloud)
This assumes they only support the costumes in SMB1 and they cannot be combined with other power-ups, as in SMM. If they wanted to include them in the other 2D games, they would need all the above for each game, plus:
3 moving-while-carrying frames
1 kicking shell frame
3 running-with-arms-out frames
1 jumping-with-arms-out frame
And for just SMW:
1 looking-up frame
2 spin-jump frames
1 falling frame
1 victory pose frame
1 crouched-on-Yoshi frame
3 punching Yoshi frames
1 victory pose on Yoshi frame
Re: Review: Duck Game - A Frantic Multiplayer Mess That Makes For A Quacking Good Time
What? No mention that the cover image and game title text is lifted straight from Doom? I don't see the connection, but I'm guessing someone who worked on this game is a fan.
Re: Video: 19 Secret Details Hidden In The Super Mario Maker 2 Direct Presentation
Re: Video: 19 Secret Details Hidden In The Super Mario Maker 2 Direct Presentation
