I think it's funny that the OP and the developer said exactly the same thing. We shouldn't buy crappy games because it will encourage developers to put more crappy games on the console. I'm in agreement with that because I happened to be alive during the video game crash in the 70s and 80s when so much garbage was coming out for the home systems at the time that everybody stopped buying the good games for fear they might be another lemon. Nintendo essentially saved the gaming industry in the US by bringing the NES over here and imposing harsh guidelines on the kind of content 3rd parties could release on their system. They would never have allowed crap like Flappy Bird, The Letter, etc. at the time. They would not put their seal of quality on such turds, because it directly reflected on them and ran the risk of crashing the industry once again.
Fast forward to today, and we have the Internet which largely helps us avoid wasting money on crappy games; however, if people continue to buy them anyway, more and more developers will throw more garbage onto the service. Is that really what we want? An eShop with a million games where 90% of them aren't worth the time of day? Think before you spend your cash, folks.
That seems underhanded.... Why would Nintendo screw some of their most loyal fans and first adopters? I really don't see how it's difficult to add support for an existing peripheral which provides the exact same buttons as the New 3DS. Bad move, Nintendo, you have some explaining to do.
(Maybe it was a bad translation? We can always hope...)
"A function that lets you acquire new content by combining an existing game with another piece of software."
Um. Didn't Sonic and Knuckles do that first? Does Capcom have an example that came before then?
Seriously, what is wrong with these companies? If you start suing for every tiny feature of gameplay, it will stifle creativity and ruin the games industry. Do they WANT another video game crash?
@IxC Everyone's free to their own opinion, but I really do believe that Nintendo is doing everything they can to do right by their fan base. They have not thus far pulled content that was obviously meant to be part of the base game out and charged extra for it. They're not pulling any funny business with multiplayer unlock keys or garbage like that. Mario Kart 8 was released as a complete game, with the standard 32 tracks and plenty of characters. What is wrong them adding additional content for people who want to pay extra for it? I think it's a really smart move for them financially and so long as they continue to operate in good faith I will continue to support them. EA, on the other hand, can go to hell.......
Sweet! I don't mind paying for extra DLC if it's truly extra. Mario Kart 8 gave us the standard 32 courses and plenty of character selection and kart customization. The only thing that was lacking was the battle mode, which I'm still hoping they will release a free patch for at some point.
This is still an incredibly stupid game that should remain buried deep in the past with the likes of ET on the Atari and Big Rig Racing on the PC. The early days of CD-ROM gaming was embarrassing for the entire industry, and Night Trap is a prime example of that. Why in the hell would anyone want to see it rereleased?
The bundle sounds well worth it. I'm sure the game will be playable with the Wii U Pro Controller, but nothing beats a Gamecube controller for Smash Bros.
There are no words to express how sad I am at hearing this news. Not only was he one of the most brilliant and talented actors the world has ever known, he was a Nintendo fan and just an all-around great guy. It is terrible that depression has taken another wonderful person from us, and we're going to be feeling his loss for quite some time.
Cost? What cost? At the very least Nintendo could port the library from the Wii VC over, and I'm sure they would love to take any costs on themselves given that it can only help drive Wii U sales.
It sure looks like a neat bug, but I can't confirm it's even possible because getting the hammer bro. to jump and throw a hammer that will hit you while you're on the vine seems to be virtually impossible. When he first appears on the screen, he always does a high jump. After that, he seems to only do so while the screen is scrolling. Executing the perfect run that gets the vine out of the block and then causes the screen to scroll while you're on it doesn't seem likely without at least a tool-assisted run or some other hackery.
I know it would never happen, but the more articles I see like this, the more I wish for the day when Nintendo returns to the forefront of sales with a console (Wii U or otherwise) that boasts the sales figures of the Wii... and then denies EA any right to release games on it.
This should probably be patched out, the way snaking in Mario Kart DS should have been. While getting sparks to get boosts is an intended feature of the game, hopping to maintain boost speed is not an advertised feature and also doesn't make physical sense. Your kart should lose speed more quickly, not more slowly, when having to expend energy to push itself off the ground.
I'm betting Nintendo will decide to patch this if all the Nintendo TV videos start showing off all the racers hopping around like idiots.
No mention of the unique Lightning Bolt behavior in MK64? That was the only game where two shrunken racers would smash each other if they collided. Fun times for all...
@Funny_Moblin The Wii U Pro Controller comes with a built in rechargeable battery, but it does have a clearly removable cover secured with a standard (if smallish) Phillips screw, so I would imagine it could be replaced with relative ease. The cover's appearance is very close to the cover on the back of the Wii U gamepad but is obviously much smaller as I'm sure the battery is as well since it doesn't need the capacity to drive a large screen and speakers.
I have not so far noticed any degradation in battery life, and I seriously doubt you could use standard batteries even if you wanted to, but I haven't opened my controller up to check exactly what's in there.
OMG Nintendo just made me a fan boy all over again. I LOVE the Gamecube controller, it's really the only way I've ever been comfortable playing Smash Bros. so this is perfect that the new game is being released will full support right off the bat. I would also assume that other games, notably Gamecube VC titles (whenever Nintendo gets around to releasing those) would support the adapter as well. Can't wait!
Played demo for 3 minutes. Exited demo. I now have no need to pay any money for this "game" as I have experienced literally everything I want to (and more) out of it.
Mindless cell phone games like this are terrible, and Nintendo has no need of such garbage on their system.
@unrandomsam From the instruction manual snapshot they posted, it seems the mount is making use of the threaded bolt hole on the back of the gamepad (inserted in step 1, tightened in step 2). I seriously doubt the gamepad is going to detach from that mount while that is screwed in fully.
$50 is a little steep, but if the build quality is good enough it might be worth it. I will wait until it comes out and there are actual reviews of it before considering a purchase.
I'd love to see Minecraft ported to the Wii U because the system badly needs the added support, and it'd be good to show off a game that would actually make good use of the Wii U gamepad instead of just using it for off-screen play.
That said, I'd be unlikely to buy it or any console version of Minecraft, because the PC version will always be way more up to date and infinitely more expansive than the limited console versions.
Can't wait for this game. I love Road Rash and this looks like it will capture all of what made it great while adding more awesomeness at the same time.
As far as I'm concerned, she can dress up however she likes as long as she continues sharing such amazing music with us.
I get why some people might not be impressed with her unique combination of violin and interpretive dance, and I know there are other violinists that are as good and maybe even better. I don't care. She dared to combine two things she loved in a truly unique way, and most people agree that it works to one degree or another. She's also a great person, which is way more than I can say for most artists these days.
@gohanrage Assuming that demonstration is even running on real hardware and is not just a pre-stitched video being streamed to a Wii U gamepad, they still need to do testing, localization, etc.
They're showing a prototype version in Japanese that works with a single first-party game. Before they can release the feature to the wild, they need to translate the appropriate text for all the different countries and languages they support, and also test a wide variety of games to ensure the titles and icons appear correctly and whatever magic they're doing on the back-end to reduce load times doesn't cause those games to become unstable. Once that's done, they need to push the various region-specific versions to their patch servers, test that the patch downloads and installs correctly under real-world conditions, and then flip the flag that lets consumer systems know there's a new update ready to go.
Very cool addition. Younger gamers might not even remember what it was like to put in a cartridge/disc, turn on the power and have the title screen appear, but this is pretty dang close to that experience. Well done, Nintendo!
Is the difficulty of the challenges actually lower or is it just that you're more familiar with the games on offer? I know the challenges I had the toughest time with on the first NES Remix were for games that I never played or only briefly touched as a kid — Games like Clu Clu Land (which I'd never heard of before Super Smash Bros. Melee), Golf and Ice Climbers gave me the most trouble, and it's probably not because of the challenges actually being that hard but more that I just didn't know what I was doing most of the time.
From reading some of that patent, it appears to be for a device that can intercept and store video data being sent to a monitor so that the stored data can be displayed on a second screen and optionally zoomed, scaled, etc. It also specifically mentions being used with PCs and connected by physical wires. It does not mention using any kind of compression/decompression technology, cannot accept realtime video data except that already being sent to the primary monitor and not directly intended to be displayed on a second screen by the PC, and is touted as working independent of the operating system software running on the computer.
So, the ONLY similarity to the Wii U gamepad you are basing this suit on is that there are two screens which can show different data at once? Cause, here's the thing. To successfully demonstrate patent infringement, you have to prove that you were first to come up with the concept and use it in a real-world scenario.
I'm pretty freaking sure computers have been able to have 2+ monitors connected concurrently showing different content for quite some time, certainly prior to 2000 when this patent was filed. Now, I'm no lawyer, but I think I could have saved you a bunch of trouble....
I can save them $80 million dollars on R&D... Capcom, your fans want more Mega Man. I will gladly accept a mere 10% of the investment money I just saved you...
This game was an instant buy for me the moment they announced it. A sequel to the fantastic NES Remix with way more good games and less duds? Hell yes...
Nintendo needs all the support they can get right now, and turning this offer down would be a really foolish move for them. That said, Nintendo is no stranger to foolish moves....
I tried this out for 15 minutes or so. There were only 15-20 people in the chat so the game was relatively stable, but still very hard to coordinate, especially with about a 30-second delay on inputs. Nevertheless it still felt way too good when we finally guided link into the first dungeon after 8 minutes of aimlessly wandering around the screen.
Is this the greatest new way to play games? No. Is it a fun experiment just to see what happens? Absolutely. Give it a spin for a few minutes.
@CrabGats I'm not talking about the indie developer that made the game. He's awesome. But you can't tell me Nintendo doesn't at least do a cursory QA pass before putting the game on their service. If it were something obscure I could understand, but not even selecting a menu option just shows this either wasn't tested or they didn't care.
@MrCharles77 Did you even play the first remix? That's the best idea a game company has had in a long time and easily worth the $15, and most of those games weren't even that great. Remix 2 looks way better and is still only $15. But by all means, go back to your Call of Duty 72 1/2.
@Gold All the games featured in the original NES Remix could be purchased on VC right from the games menu by selecting an icon on the screen. Remix 2 isn't coming out until April, Now what do you think that says about the release date of Super Mario Bros. 3 on VC? Hmm?
I think Nintendo needs to change their strategy with virtual console on the Wii U. On the Wii, they were selling systems like hotcakes on the motion controls and Wii Sports alone, so they could afford to release a few VC games a week with really only one or two good ones a month. The Wii U is failing, and unleashing a large amount of great games from their back catalog can only make the system more attractive to prospective buyers. Leverage that library, Nintendo!
I love insights like this into how the game was coded and how you can break the developers' carefully-constructed code.
I doubt you'll ever be able to use the song to warp somewhere there's not an owl statue, because I'm pretty sure the game just loads up a cutscene showing you arriving after you select a location. It most likely locks up when an invalid location is selected because the memory being pointed at doesn't have a cutscene in it.
I don't know. Board games are hard to judge from a video, and it might be pretty fun once you're playing, but this demonstration didn't look that exciting. With a property like Megaman, the fun is in the flavor, and they didn't do much to add any that I could see. For example, the boss battle dice mechanics are pretty dry overall... 1-2: miss, 3-4: 2 damage, 5: 3 damage, 6: discard and take damage. Great, but how does that translate to the character of Ice Man? Why don't you come up with clever different attacks he could be doing and describe them on the boss card, rather than just having random die rolls equate to dry, uninteresting statistics?
If the game is polished up more and more flavor is added, they might have something. As it is I'll pass on this.

Why don't you come up with clever different attacks he could be doing and describe them on the boss card, rather than just having random die rolls equate to dry, uninteresting statistics?
If the game is polished up more and more flavor is added, they might have something. As it is I'll pass on this.
Re: Dallas Tech Company iLife Thinks Nintendo Stole Its Idea For Motion Control
@element187 and ironically a complete ripoff of Nintendo's technology, who to my knowledge has not sued Sony yet.
At least Microsoft had the decency to explore a different method of accepting motion input when they set out to imitate Nintendo's success.
