Re: Review: Pikmin 3 (Wii U)

WaxxyOne

Finally, the Wii U gets the "killer app" it's been needing since day one. This would have been extremely helpful to selling systems if it were released several months ago, but better late than never, I suppose.

Re: Weirdness: Zelda Answers Rejected on Jeopardy, Hearts are Broken

WaxxyOne

@aaronsullivan The guy on the right might have felt slighted, but he wasn't going to win anyway. If all 3 were given credit for their answers, the middle guy would have won the one on the right still would have ended up in 3rd place.

Also, to people confused about the structure of the question, pay attention:

"The title princess of this game, which launched a best-selling franchise, was named for F. Scott Fitzgerald's wife."

The answer does not ask for the wife's name or the princess' name. It asks for "this game", specifically "The Legend of Zelda" which is the full title of the first game in the franchise. The answer is intended to be the response to the question "What is The Legend of Zelda (the NES game)?" Yes, it's confusing to see it backwards. What are you gonna do.

If the right question was "Who is (Princess) Zelda?" than the answer would have been "This princess, the title character a famous video game franchise, was named for F. Scott Fitzgerald's wife."

Re: Weirdness: Zelda Answers Rejected on Jeopardy, Hearts are Broken

WaxxyOne

Just saying Zelda is a common way to abbreviate the name of the franchise, so this one's kind of a tough call. If the answer had been "Star Wars: Episode IV: A New Hope" and somebody had written down "Star Wars" I feel like they would have given them the points. (I know the analogy's not perfect since the franchise is named Star Wars in this case, but it's the best I could come up with!)

The thing that splits the decision for me is that F. Scott Fitzgerald's wife's name is also Zelda, so simply writing Zelda doesn't prove that you know the name of the game series.

Re: Talking Point: The Uncertain Collectible Future of Download-Only Game Libraries

WaxxyOne

First, while I can't speak for other, more greedy companies, Nintendo's model at least doesn't take away the stuff you've already downloaded, so theoretically you can keep playing your games until your console no longer works. Secondly, I believe Nintendo will keep offering classic games as long as there is a market for them that keeps it worthwhile. Third, if all else fails and Nintendo is unwilling or unable to continue offering games for a price, well..... that's where emulation comes in.

Re: Nintendo May Have Eased Off On Its Claims To 'Let's Play' Ad Revenues

WaxxyOne

Classy move, Nintendo. I totally understand their need to protect their IP, as copyright law, and all law in general, is based on precedent. If they don't act lay down their claim when someone breaks copyright, it's a slippery slope that can lead to a real developer using their IP to make money at Nintendo's expense, and then they could have their legal hands tied when they try to sue the developer and they use previous material that Nintendo did not block to justify the infringement. It can happen, people.

Lifting the restriction and allowing the user to make money from ads again is a great move that most companies wouldn't bother making. It's clear Nintendo cares about their fans, as they always have.

Re: Nintendo's Kensuke Tanabe Wants To Make Tingle Popular In The West

WaxxyOne

Tingle hatred is just a sad extension of barely-buried homophobia that is rampant in the US and some other western companies. He is a character who is self-described as being in his forties but wears a green leotard and prances around calling himself a "fairy." The jokes write themselves. But whereas in Japan they can create a character like that as satire and still have fun with him, here in the states putting someone like that into a game is just asking to have mud slung at you.

I have never really had a problem with Tingle. He's quirky and funny, but there are so many characters throughout the Zelda series who are their own type of oddball, the idea that this one would spark hatred to me is just silly. It's the same type of closed-minded attitude that causes people to refer to Nintendo titles as "kid games."

For what it's worth, I also never had a problem with Jar-Jar. The character was thrown is as comic relief and might be a bit too slapstick for Star Wars, but he was just there to keep the little kids entertained. I never saw him as a racist stereotype and I don't see how anyone else could either because I'm pretty sure no one's ever met a real Gungan before.

Re: Feature: The Big Nintendo E3 Survey

WaxxyOne

I agree this E3 was somewhat lackluster overall. Nintendo showed some games to get excited about, but nothing jaw-dropping. On the other hand after their Wii U announcement last year I didn't really expect anything like that from them. I think they did well showing all the games that are coming, but it would have been nice to see something truly new they could showcase instead of just reassurances that yes, they have games coming.

As far as Sony and Microsoft, I don't think anything more needs to be said about the "Xbone" that hasn't been stated already. Epic fail. Sony riding the wave of success they are just because their competitor's console is a flop is BS. Their system isn't all that great and nothing I heard about it makes me want to buy one. Personally I'll stick with my Wii U and hope Nintendo can turn sales around so we can get some good third party games coming our way. If not, I think I'll stick to my PC and Steam for now... I currently see no reason to shell out $400-500 on a new console that can't do anything more than my computer can.

Re: Reggie: Publishers Should Create Great Games To Stem The Impact Of Used Game Sales

WaxxyOne

Amen, Nintendo. I have been an admitted Nintendo fanboy for many years and have sold their games away one time — selling an old N64 at a garage sale several years after the GC was out. I regularly look through my library of 360 games and wonder why I bought them in the first place, and though I don't actively seek to sell any games, I have sold a few of them when people have expressed an interest and I realize I haven't booted it up in 2 years.

Nintendo games are iconic, engaging, original and replayable. Very few other companies can say the same about most of their games.

Re: First Impressions: Super Mario 3D World

WaxxyOne

If it's not broke, don't fix it. The 4-player simultaneous mode is enough for me to make this fresh and interesting. If you take a look back at New Super Mario Bros. Wii, you'll see a game that at first glance looks exactly like every other 2D Mario game ever, with the exception that you can play with 3 friends at the same time. However, that one small change makes a world of difference, and I think it will happen again here.

In any case, the game has a good long while until release and am I absolutely confident in Nintendo's ability to add some surprises and polish the game to perfection by then. After all, when is the last time they released a mainstream Mario title that you could truly call "bad"?

Re: You Can Now Use Your GameCube Pad On Your Wii U

WaxxyOne

@Haxonberik
It works in all the modes. The device simply translates a GC controller's inputs to those of a Classic Controller in hardware. The software does not need to support it at all as all it sees connected to the Wiimote is a Classic Controller and treats the device as such.

Re: You Can Now Use Your GameCube Pad On Your Wii U

WaxxyOne

@NL:
I'm sorry to say I just got mine in the mail and found that you have a really bad mistake here that is resulting in false advertising for the device.

You state:
"A, B, X, Y, L, R and Z can be customized"

Amazon.com states:
"The button A, B, X, Y, L, R and Z can be customized with Turbo"

Dropping those critical words at the end results in sounding like you can remap most of the buttons freely. This is not true. You can only enable and disable turbo on those buttons individually. The buttons they map to are set in stone by the device and cannot be changed.

Here is the key they provide if anyone is interested:

A (GC) => a (CC)
B => b
X => x
Y => y
R => R
L => L
Z => ZR (ZL cannot be used)
D-Pad => D-Pad
Left Analog => Left Analog
C-Stick => Right Analog
Press and hold Start for 2+ seconds => HOME
Press and release Start once => -/Select
Press Start twice in rapid succession => +/Start

Re: Video: A History Of Nintendo Controllers in Less Than 30 Seconds

WaxxyOne

I think you made a typo in your tagline. When you said "N64's is still the strangest" I think you meant "N64's is still THE MOST AWESOME".

Just kidding. But seriously I know the controller's analog stick was teh suck and by today's standards, no dual analog = no fun, but I thought the form factor on it was great. I loved being able to comfortably adjust your grip to play games that utilize the different input methods, I loved the actual trigger buttons, and come on I mean SIX face buttons! Where are the controllers today with six face buttons?! I'm tired of playing N64 games and having to use the second analog as a poor man's substitute for the C-buttons.

Re: New Super Mario Bros. U Update Arriving with Luigi's DLC

WaxxyOne

@hydeks:

You baffle me, sir. You own Mario U, but you're not going to download Luigi U for 10 bucks cheaper because you don't like DLC? You'd rather have two discs to play the same content you could play with one, again at a cheaper price? The only reasons I can think of for not liking DLC would be lack of storage space, no Internet connection, or you just dislike companies charging extra for "content that should have been included in the first place."

So, tackling those one at a time, 1) Storage space, I suppose that could be a concern if you have the basic model, but I seriously doubt the space requirements here will be very high. They're utilizing all the same graphics and sound assets, so the only thing you're really downloading is a little bit of code and level data. If it's over 100 megs in size, I'd be shocked, and that's a high estimate. 2) No Internet connection... Well, you're here, so I'm assuming that's not an issue. Is it the time to download? See my point about small size above. Most likely you'd have it quicker if you downloaded it rather than running to the store. And 3) Content should have been included. First off, in this case, I don't see that at all. Nintendo delivered a rich, fully fleshed-out game with Mario U, even including bonus content like challenges and extra game modes, and these levels have obviously only been developed since after the game was released. But, secondly and more importantly, if you disagree with the "price gouging" aspect of DLC, why are you planning on spending 10 MORE DOLLARS for the same content on a physical disc?

So very confused.

Re: New Super Mario Bros. U Update Arriving with Luigi's DLC

WaxxyOne

Pro controller support at last! Now hopefully I can play multiplayer with my friends without having to employ the silly "shake the controller" move to do a spin jump. This is very welcome news, and I'll definitely be picking up New Super Luigi U as soon as it's out. More 2D Mario = Happy me!

Re: Evidence of a Functional 3DS Flashcard Emerges

WaxxyOne

Don't really see the point of this. Is the company going to offer to keep updating the cards each time Nintendo releases a new software version that is incompatible with their existing model? All Nintendo has to do is release a new update that detects the card, and then make future games require that version before they can be played, and these will suddenly be useless.

Re: Donkey Kong 64 Required Expansion Pak to Prevent Game-Breaking Bug

WaxxyOne

Interesting info. I'm not surprised they chose to handle it the way they did, and I'm not particularly upset because A) they bundled the expansion pack with the game, and B) based on his description, the game did make use of the extra RAM, it's just that a mode where it wasn't required would have been included if they could have ironed out the crash bug.

It'd be interesting to get one's hands on the original source code and see if the bug could be identified. Not very likely, I know, but the game is plenty old now and the Internet is a magical place full of wonderfully talented people with nothing better to do, so Nintendo/Rare should really think about giving it a shot. My best guess is one or more of the scaled-down resources causing the crash, but that's obviously a shot in the dark.

Re: Talking Point: Wii U vs Xbox One - Online Requirements and On-Disc DRM

WaxxyOne

Will never understand the (currently) 4% of people who voted for "I think the publisher should get a cut." Be honest, are you industry plants or work directly for a publisher? The publisher does not deserve a cut on second-hand sales any more than a company deserves a cut when you transfer physical goods for money to another person. There is absolutely zero reason for games to be treated differently.

I firmly believe this decision, if true, will seriously hurt the Xbox One's chances, if not remove it as a contender entirely.

Re: Weirdness: A Wii U Gamer's Miiverse Journey Through Super Metroid

WaxxyOne

Thought the posts could be real until I reached the "I found Samus" one. While I can believe someone assuming the main character's name is the same as the game's title (see also: Zelda), I cannot believe they would arbitrarily reverse the names of Samus and the metroids. At the very least that particular post is a joke, which to me makes the rest less believable.

Re: Review: Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (Virtual Console / Sega Mega Drive)

WaxxyOne

The final boss fight of this game is so ridiculously hard and unfair, it's a wonder anybody likes this game at all. Oh well, at least the last several levels aren't full of enemies that pop up on the screen without warning and then hit you before you can do anything about it. Oh wait.

Why was this game considered good again? It's less fair than Ninja Gaiden for the NES.

Re: EA Developing Frostbite Engine For Mobile, But Not Wii U

WaxxyOne

EA can go suck a nut. And no, this opinion would not change even if EA became Wii U's strongest supporter tomorrow. They'd also have to fire all their executive management, restructure their business model and update their policies in a way that removes their "Developer = Sweat Shop" mentality before I would seriously consider changing my mind.

Re: Wii U GamePad Teardown Reveals Upgradeable Firmware, Dual GamePad Support As Standard

WaxxyOne

Gah, this again? What is this, 1993? There needs to be a new term to describe people who utilize hacking skills for illegal or immoral purposes, such as identity theft or software piracy. People with hacking skills who use it to run custom homebrew on their own systems, dissect the machine to learn how to emulate it, or simply explore the hardware they purchased are not evil. It is exactly these types of people who help the industry thrive. Don't hate them!

If the person who made that video can help write software that will allow me to use my Wii U gamepad on my PC as a touch-screen controller, then that person is my hero. Why shouldn't I be allowed to do this? I legally own my PC, the Wii U and its gamepad, and I should be able to use it as I wish so long as it does not infringe Nintendo's rights. If Nintendo would just do what Microsoft does and make their console hardware work with my PC, I wouldn't be relying on a "hacker" to do it in the first place!

Re: Talking Point: Censoring Boingy Bits, Bums and Gore

WaxxyOne

As with any good argument, there are good points on both sides of this one. Nintendo is in the business of keeping games on store shelves. If they know that game X would cause controversy in region Y, they have shown they aren't shy about taking steps to prevent it. Sometimes they go too far, but it's easy to see why they might adopt the strategy of "better safe than sorry" here.

On the other hand, I am a firm believer that the consumer should be allowed to decide exactly what they wish to tolerate for themselves and their children. Games which allow options to limit blood and gore work great for me — I can choose to tone it down so my child can participate, or leave it on to experience the author's original vision. If the only version I'm allowed to use in my region has had the censorship hammer taken to it, that might upset me — of course it's all based on how important the censored content is to the work as a whole. As with all things, whether censorship can be seen as appropriate or not is all based on the situation.

However in general, I would hope that responsible adults would care enough to make an informed decision, then decide themselves what they want to see. Unfortunately, in the West and especially in the US we have a large portion of the population that has adopted the attitude that they should be allowed to tell everyone else what is and isn't appropriate for them. That doesn't seem likely to change any time soon.

Re: Review: Kirby's Adventure (Wii U eShop / NES)

WaxxyOne

If you're seriously doubting the decision to buy this at this price, you're crazy. It's not the greatest game of all times, but it's certainly one of the best for the NES, and at this price it's an absolute steal.

I do remember the lag on this game from the original NES, so that's not the emulation slowing it down. The game came out very late in the NES' lifecycle. As such, it pushed the NES to its limits and unfortunately it often shows when there are more than a couple enemies or effects happening on the screen. Fortunately I don't believe it detracts too much from the experience.

Also, if you have a 3DS and are willing to pay more (which you should be for this fantastic game), the 3D Classics version does not lag.

Re: Review: Need for Speed: Most Wanted U (Wii U)

WaxxyOne

Ugh. NL owes me $60. This game is truly terrible. Your review forgot to mention the total lack of storyline, the way the "Easy Race" features completely remove any semblance of smooth game progression, the way the cars all handle like roller skates on butter, the way the cop chases can go on for 45 minutes without ever feeling like you're anywhere close to being caught, and most importantly the absolute lie that is the subtitle of this game.

The original NFS: Most Wanted was my favorite in the series. It combined tight car handling with epic police chases and an immersive storyline that develops as you complete races and unlock cars to progress up the most wanted list. This game doesn't even deserve to be called a cheap knockoff of the original. If it had gone straight to the $10 bargain bin I still would have rated it "Buyer Beware."

Re: Check Out This Comparison Between The New 3DS Zelda And Link To The Past

WaxxyOne

I think people are reading too much into this "same overworld" theory. Yes, Nintendo has stated it fits in the same timeline, and clearly the comparison above shows the same section of map. However, there's the distinct possibility that the developers started with the existing map as a "framework" for updating the graphics to a 3D world in order to make it look nostalgic. That does not mean that the final map will be laid out anything at all like LttP's overworld.

Obviously, I could be dead wrong, but I don't think we should all assume that the map is going to be the same just because these shots shown in a video demo 8 months before the game's release use it.

Re: Talking Point: Nintendo Should Make EA Co-operation a Priority

WaxxyOne

Would having EA's full support help bring money to the console? Of course. Is EA the devil incarnate? Absolutely. Are all of EA's huge sellers the same mindless sports title rehashed year after year? Duh.

If the answer to Nintendo's long-term success is to pander to companies which keep pumping out mindless games for the intellectual sheep of the gaming industry, I worry what that would do to the unique and original quality gaming Nintendo has been able to push over the years... and what Microsoft and Sony would be expected to rip off afterwards.

Re: Feature: The GamePad - From Waggling Remotes To Dual Sticks and a Touchscreen

WaxxyOne

When used effectively, every feature of the gamepad can serve as a fantastic addition to the game. Off-TV play is very nice when you need to share the screen or you just want to kick back and relax on the couch. Asynchronous multiplayer is incredibly fun when done right — Unfortunately the only game I've personally played so far where it's done right is Nintendo Land, but I'm hoping there will be more on the way. The motion controls for "scanning" and "steering" are my least favorite feature, but that's not to say horrible. Scanning the environment with the pad can serve as a way to naturally bring the player deeper into the game setting. That said, this is the feature most often abused or handled poorly, which is not so much the fault of the controller as the developers utilizing it. Drawing on or using the gamepad as a touchscreen is very natural and feels great, again only when done right. If the game mainly uses the "standard" button controls but with some funky ability that requires use of the touch-screen, it's usually a gimick that could be done just as effectively without the screen's involvment.

In light of this, I don't see a large difference between the motion controls of the Wii versus the gamepad in terms of whether the features Nintendo has provided are "good" or "bad." When used effectively, the Wiimote+Nunchuk controls could put to shame so-called "standard" control styles handily. When used poorly, you get the feeling you've been sucked into a gimicky game that's not doing Nintendo's console any favors.

I will say that Nintendo made the smarter move this time around in building in controls that mirror other console's input methods so that the developers can more easily decide to use them instead of having to force an alternate control method on the player. Last time Nintendo provided the Classic Controller as an alternative but because it was an add-on device it was ignored far too often.

Re: Aliens: Colonial Marines Cancelled on Wii U

WaxxyOne

Given how terrible this game is on other platforms, I couldn't care less about it not showing up on Wii U. I wouldn't be surprised if the reason for the cancellation was Nintendo not letting them put the worthless piece of trash on their console until they fixed some of the game-breaking bugs evident in the released versions.

Re: Feature: The Nintendo Easter Egg Hunt

WaxxyOne

Perhaps not a cross-Nintendo reference, but I laughed pretty hard the first time I waited long enough in Super Mario 64 for Mario to fall asleep on the floor and then start talking in his sleep. "Ahhh spaghetti... Ahhh ravioli. Mama-mia..."

Re: Nintendo States That an External Hard Drive is Needed for LEGO City Undercover Download

WaxxyOne

Got a 500GB hard drive hooked up to my Wii U and I don't mind waiting for the DL if it means I don't have to touch a disc. No problem here.

Also, if the installed size is 22GB, it's likely you still need a HDD even with an empty Deluxe model because the install files have to briefly live alongside the game files and there's not enough working room left after you remove 22GB of the Wii's 25GB of space. They also might be factoring in a reasonable amount of space for the save files, which will be put in the same location as the game files and if they're large enough could present a problem if multiple saves are used.

Still, I think Nintendo made it pretty clear when they launched the system that people wanting to take advantage of retail downloads would need to obtain an external drive. The whole entitlement issue that some people seem to have is silly to me. For $350 you got an HD console system, the world's most advanced controller, a fantastic collection of first-party games and a modest amount of internal storage suitable for storing several eShop games or many hundreds of virtual console titles. If you want more than that, having to shell $50-100 for supplemental memory is not that unreasonable of a request.
