Re: Random: Frozen Rayman Spotted In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

WaxxyOne

This is nothing. There are same vague shapes in the ice that kinda-sorta can be resolved into a rough head shape, so our pesky brains try to make sense of it by seeing a face that just isn't there. Even if some people think they see something, they should ask themselves why in the world he would be there. This is Smash Bros, not Mortal Kombat. They're not known for putting Easter eggs in the background, so why would they make an exception now?

Re: Random: Prince Harry Thinks Fortnite Should Be Banned

WaxxyOne

First off, I hate Fortnite. However, I believe in free speech a lot more than I dislike Fortnite. Regardless of the game in question, this is just another case of ignorant adults trying to blame video games for society's problems.

Maybe before placing blame on the "easy target," His Highness should take a look at some of the ridiculously rabid fans created by soccer (a.k.a. football) in the UK and elsewhere. I've personally never heard of violence breaking out among drunken fans at a Fortnite exhibition, but it happens all the time at organized sporting events. Yet, does anyone suggest we ban those? Of course not, because they'd have a riot on their hands and they know it.

This part in particular makes me want to vomit: "Parents have got their hands up - they don’t know what to do about it. It’s like waiting for the damage to be done."

Really? Well, let me give those poor, helpless parents some advice: YOU'RE THE FREAKING PARENT. Monitor and set limits on your kids' game time. PCs and every major console have parental controls built into them to help you do exactly that, yet nobody seems to know what to do.

Re: Pinball-Themed Senran Kagura: Peach Ball Gets Western Switch Release This Summer

@NEStalgia Uhhh... "Well thought out?" Did you watch the same trailer I just did? They strip off clothes and their ludicrously over-sized boobs are bouncing all over the place. Even if young children are oblivious to the titillation-factor of imagery like this, it can still give them some pretty messed up ideas about how young girls should dress and behave.

Re: Review: Night Trap - 25th Anniversary Edition (Switch eShop)

WaxxyOne

Correction: Maybe a lot of other people thought FMV and "interactive video" games were the future, but even at the time I knew they were crap, which is why Nintendo was absolutely right to forego CD technology at the time. This game is a shining example of why these types of games just don't work. The bad acting, the linear gameplay and the poor quality of the entire presentation makes E.T. on the Atari 2600 look like a masterpiece in comparison. This remaster might be the best version of the game today, but it doesn't really matter how well you polish a turd, now does it?

Re: Poll: Is Your Nintendo Switch Cracking Under The Pressure?

WaxxyOne

That's unfortunate, but I'm happy to confirm that my launch day Switch looks brand new (other than finger smudges on the screen which are 100% my fault ) and I have not treated with any kid gloves, either. I have used it about 80% docked, 20% undocked and take it to and from work once a week and my friends' houses a couple times a month. I've also had a couple accidents where it has gotten knocked off the TV stand and ejected from the dock, so the fact that it's held up with no visible marks is pretty impressive, actually.

Maybe this flaw is present only in some of the very first run units.

Re: Rumour: Nintendo Is Banning Online Features For Suspected Pirated Game Carts

WaxxyOne

Once again the internet is doing what it does best... Creating a controversy before it actually exists.

First, this is a rumor, so it's not even confirmed by anybody reputable. Second, there are a ton of assumptions being made about exactly how Nintendo will identify pirated copies and how they will implement restrictions on those copies. For all we know, they're only looking for carts that have been made available online and downloaded thousands of times. They also could have a policy in place ready to replace games of buyers when they inadvertantly end up with a compromised copy.

How about we wait until people actually start complaining (and not just two people, like with the bent switch crap) before starting a riot?

Re: Super Mario Kart on SNES Gets MSU1 Digital Audio Enhancement

WaxxyOne

@Shiryu You've obviously spent a lot of time and effort making sure the replacement tracks stick to the original tunes and timing, and the results are some great sounding CD tracks, but it just seems so out of place when playing alongside the original 16-bit game. Some of that is just nostalgia, sure, but the biggest thing I noticed is that the enhanced CD tracks of the atmospheric and mellow first areas of Super Metroid were basically putting me to sleep, which is something you definitely don't want when playing an action game!

I also particularly dislike the enhanced fanfare that plays when picking up an item, as it abruptly cuts off at the end. Again, this might be to stay true to the original, but to hear the much more rich CD music abruptly stopping is just jarring every time.

Re: Translation of Zelda: Breath of the Wild's Japanese Ending Prompts Interesting Debate

WaxxyOne

Erm, when I finished the game, I read that line as "he was in the process of regenerating into his Ganon form, but you interrupted that and now he's given up on it," not, "He's given up on the endless cycle of regeneration forever," and I knew nothing about the Japanese text.

People who read it to say that this is Ganon's final form and he has given up completely on ever being regenerated were reading way too much into the line.

Re: Walmart Cancels All Super NES Classic Pre-Orders

WaxxyOne

Just got the cancellation email. Screw you, Walmart. Also, screw you, Nintendo, for creating this mess. If you know for a fact that every system is going to be snatched up as soon as preorders go live, when aren't you manufacturing systems around the clock and leaving the scalpers with stock they can't move? I guess making money isn't what you're into, then?

Re: Cemu Wii U Emulator Version 1.7.5 Shows Daunting Progress With Zelda: Breath of the Wild

WaxxyOne

Creating and sharing emulators is one thing. Making money off of it is something else entirely. Whether legal or not, you're profiting from someone else's hard work, and enabling and encouraging freeloaders to steal games rather than pay for them.

It's really frustrating, because the very people emulating and stealing BotW because they love Zelda are the ones putting future entries in the series in jeopardy by making it less profitable for Nintendo to continue releasing games.

Re: Review: Human Resource Machine (Switch eShop)

WaxxyOne

Like Tomorrow Corporation's other two offerings, I've already purchased and played through this game and don't see a reason to shell out money for it again given that there's zero new content being offered.

I seriously wish they would just add some new levels to play (or things to burn, in the case of Little Inferno), as I would gladly pay money for all three if they did.

Re: Realistic Puddles Are Reason #243 That Zelda: Breath Of The Wild Is Awesome

WaxxyOne

@Alshain01 There's been once or twice that I've felt put out that I couldn't climb some sheer cliff at the moment because it was raining, but typically it doesn't seem like that big of a deal. I could see the argument for it perhaps not being the best gameplay decision Nintendo could have made, but when compared to previous gaffs like unskippable dialogue, pointless controller waggling and ... just... FREAKING FI.... Yeah, I'll deal with a few inconvenient rainstorms any day.

Re: Forget Scratched Screens And Joy-Con Problems, "Warp-Gate" Is The New Nintendo Switch Issue

WaxxyOne

I've played way too many hours of Zelda to admit to, both docked and in tablet mode, and I've carried the system in my BotW carry case multiple times and never seen this issue. I also haven't had the system just randomly be on and hot while in the case, either.

One thing to note, however, is that the system will sometimes respond to controller buttons being pressed even when it's in tablet mode and they're not docked to the system. Obviously, this is so that you can set the thing on a table and play it with JoyCons or a Switch Pro controller remotely, but it is a bit concerning that the system might switch itself on because a button gets jostled on a controller sitting nearby in a suitcase or backpack.

However, my understanding is that only the Home button should work, and then you have to "confirm" the action by pressing the same button three times, so I doubt it's really that big of an issue.

Re: Lego City Undercover Still Has Ridiculous Load Times on Switch

WaxxyOne

This is quite disappointing given that the system has already shown it's more than capable of loading giant open-world areas in a reasonable amount of time. I'm guessing this was treated more like a quick port than it deserved and that the game engine wasn't really updated to take advantage of the Switch's capabilities. If so, that's pretty lame.

Let's see how things look after the patch. If the load times are still consistently 30 seconds+, I don't think I'll be picking this up.

Re: Party Golf All Set To Tee Off On The Nintendo Switch

WaxxyOne

This looks like a lot of silly fun. Since when is that such a bad thing? Even if it's just a time-waster or a game you only pull out when you're with a couple friends or at a party, it looks enjoyable and should be worth a purchase if the cost isn't unreasonable.

I personally don't give a crap about 3rd party "mainstream" titles. If you want Call of Duty 17 1/2: Super Spinoff 39: Pay to Win Edition, get it on your PC or other console. Then when you want to play something actually original and fun, turn your Switch on. Not really seeing the problem.

Re: Fresh Data Shows That Four Out Of Five Pokémon GO Players Have Given Up Hunting

WaxxyOne

Articles like this have all the flavor and sustenance as the half-baked "The new WOW-killer" articles that finally seemed to have died off. Did Pokemon GO peak early? Absolutely. Was it played by one crap ton of people who previously wouldn't consider playing a Pokemon game at all? Hell yes. Are only 5-6 million users actively playing it right now? Ye-- Wait, ONLY? Seriously, I want Nintendo's problems.

Re: Nintendo Fixes the Left Joy-Con Problem with a Small Piece of Foam

WaxxyOne

@SLIGEACH_EIRE When Nintendo released the Famicom in Japan, there were many units that had crashing issues with certain games. After confirming the issue, Nintendo recalled every unit sold to date and replaced them, free of charge.

When Nintendo released the DS, there were many units shipped with one or more dead pixels on the screen(s). After confirming that there was a widespread issue, Nintendo sent out a notice to DS owners and offered to replace the affected systems free of charge.

Shortly after Nintendo released the Wii, it became apparent that the provided wrist strap would occasionally break when players wearing them got too overzealous with their motions and let go of their Wiimote, causing damage to the system and other objects in the room. Once Nintendo confirmed there was a problem, they offered to ship out, for free, more beefy straps and padded controller covers for each and every controller they had sold to date.

After the unexpectedly lackluster 3DS launch, prompting Nintendo to slash the price of the unit just a few months later, they made it up to early adopters by giving them a crap ton of free virtual console games, some of which remain exclusive to those users to this day.

I have absolutely no doubt that if Nintendo determines this is a widespread problem that cannot be handled through the standard warranty service program, they will take care of it one way or another. Please consider giving the benefit of the doubt to a company that has proven, time and time again, that they will own up to their mistakes and take care of their community regardless of the expense.

Re: Guide: What Each Zelda amiibo Does In The Legend of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild

WaxxyOne

FYI, I tried using the Link amiibo in a town and got a chest instead of a horse. It seems you can't summon the horse in certain places? Kind of annoyed because now I have to wait until tomorrow to try again.

Update: Okay, it turns out you can get around that limitation by reloading a save from before using the amiibo, so now I can confirm that the horse fails to summon if you're in Zora's Domain and presumably other locations where horses can't travel.

I'm also disappointed that the once-per-day restriction applies to Epona, since you're not gaining anything new by having the horse summoned repeatedly, assuming it only allows one in the game at a time. I was kind of hoping I could use the amiibo to summon my horse anywhere in the world, rather than the extremely limited whistling they put in the game that is all but useless and makes horses completely impractical to bother with.

Oh well, looks like I'll be running around on my own two feet everywhere in this game after all.

Re: "No Widespread Technical Problems" With Switch Joy-Cons, Claims Nintendo

WaxxyOne

I bought my Switch on launch day and have had no issues with the Joy-Cons that came with the system. However, I purchased an extra set this last weekend so I could get some 4-player Bomberman action going, and I noticed that sometimes the left Joy-Con would seem to briefly disconnect, causing either ignored input on the analog stick, or sustained input after I had released the stick. So far, this only occurs with the set I purchased separately, not the ones that came with the console.

Moving my Switch dock a few feet to the right to put it a little closer to where I usually play solved the issue, for the most part, although occasionally someone walking or standing in between me and the console can cause it to reappear.

I don't know if my experience is typical, but it seems like the issue might be related to some defective Joy-Cons rather than an issue with the console itself.

It doesn't bother me too much right now, but if it becomes a larger issue I plan on contacting Nintendo support about it to see what they say.

Re: Here's Why Nintendo Switch Games Cost More Than Those For Other Consoles

WaxxyOne

"otherwise, what's the incentive for high street stores to stock Switch games?"

How about, I don't give a toss? This is 2017, we should have dumped dedicated physical game stores a very long time ago, just like cable TV and fax machines. I'm sure Nintendo could easily make more profit per unit sold digitally than those that require a physical cartridge, box and shipping, so why aren't they encouraging people to stay home and download the titles?

People need to get with the program and stop worrying so much about letting go over the antiquated past.

Re: Random: Check Out This Travel Nintendo Switch DIY Dock

WaxxyOne

Like the vast majority of people, I haven't had any scratching issues with my Switch, and I find it hard to believe there's a problem that doesn't involve people being unnecessarily rough with the system and/or dock. I could see perhaps a few defective docks being produced, sure, but all it takes is one or two videos put online and suddenly everyone thinks there's an epidemic.

This alternative solution looks ugly, clunky and awkward, so I'm not sure what the draw is supposed to be. To each his own, I guess.

Re: Nintendo Switch Now Reportedly Adds 25% Extra GPU Power for Developers in 'Mobile' Mode

WaxxyOne

@NewAdvent Unfortunately, it's not that simple, and the question is impossible to answer right now anyway since we don't yet have the system and game in our hands.

However, the reason the game may run smoother in handheld mode has more to do than just rendering in 720p. The drop in power of the GPU from docked to handheld undoubtedly requires developers to adjust other visuals as well. If you look at the comparison video posted earlier, it's clear to see that the handheld mode visuals are not only lower resolution and more blocky, but that the graphics are much less cinematic than playing in TV mode. Likely, there are several features such as sun shafts, soft shadows, etc, that the developers either turn off or tone down in handheld mode to allow the GPU to render the scene at a much lower clock speed.

So, although your TV and the console in handheld mode may support the same number of pixels, that in no way means that the same demand will be placed on the GPU whether it's docked or not. It is likely that you will see improved framerates with less dips when running on your TV in 720p versus someone running on a TV that supports the max 900p that the game can output, however.

Re: Video: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild's Localised Voice Acting is Pretty Darn Varied

WaxxyOne

I saw nothing wrong with any of the voice acting in this video. The most emotional line is clearly the Zelda one shown before the (apparently now infamous) crying scene, and seems to be delivered fairly capably in all supported languages. The Japanese one seems to be the most "enthusiastically executed", which is highly typical of voice acting in that region.

I'd also point out that since the game is never going to be experienced in this style — cycling through the same scene in several different languages — this video is pretty pointless. As long as the voice acting is consistent within the single language that is being experienced, what it sounds like elsewhere on the planet is completely irrelevant. I find it especially suspect that the video creator chose to separate Zelda's "Everything I've done up to this point..." line from the shot of her crying, as it was not at all necessary for the comparison advertised by the video and serves only to create an overly drawn-out (and probably intended to be humorous) repeated shot of Zelda crying for 2 seconds as voiced by several different women.

In short, the video is trash and should be ignored.

Re: Princess Zelda is "Very Complex and Multi-Faceted" in Breath of the Wild, Aonuma Explains

WaxxyOne

Every time I see an "issue" like this, I just shake my head and roll my eyes. It doesn't matter how hard companies try to accommodate the whiny feminazi movement that has taken firm root on the Internet, they will never be able to win. Here's why:

The first feminazi argument: "There aren't enough strong female heroes in video games! All video game heroes are typical males and have always been since the dawn of video games! Video game devs are sexist! [Insert shots of half-naked females from video games here]" Let's just forget about early video game icons like Ms. Pac-Man and Samus Aran. I guess they don't count because they don't immediately support the feminazi argument. But, that's not the main point, which brings me to...

The second feminazi argument: "Whenever female options are added into a game, they just take the male character and repaint him as a woman! Women aren't just men in drag! They have their own unique personalities and video game devs just don't get us at all! [Insert shots of Linkle and female Diablo III heroes]" So, you're saying when they don't give you a female option, it's because they're sexist, but when they let you choose a female version of a male hero, implying that gender doesn't matter, they're also sexist. Great. Next point...

The third feminazi argument: "When females are included uniquely in games, they're painted all emotional and weak! Females can be every bit as strong-willed and capable as men! Quit making us all look like pansies! [Insert shots of Super Princess Peach]"

I think you see what I'm getting at, but just in case... There is zero way to satisfy all three arguments at the same time. If the hero is male, the dev is sexist. If the hero is (or can be) female but acts strong and heroic, that's just throwing clothes on a dude and the dev is sexist. If the hero is female and that femininity is highlighted in the way she behaves, that's totally stereotypical and sexist.

The reality is that certain people just exist to find the negative argument in whatever they see, regardless of how it contradicts their earlier arguments or views, because most readers are sheep with extremely short memories and whining dramatically about how unfair the world is gets you more readers than writing a happy feels fluff piece, even if the latter is supported by facts.

The only real way to deal with these types of people is to remember that they're the vast minority, ignore them, and move on. Responding with apologies or clarifications like this one often just encourages the squeaky wheels to complain even louder next time.

Re: Video: Digital Foundry Puts Breath of the Wild, MK8 Deluxe and Splatoon 2 to the Test

WaxxyOne

Interesting, sure, but this is still focusing on the wrong thing. As long as the game looks good, the gameplay is fun and the framerate is stable enough not to interfere with those factors, then I don't care if the game occasionally drops a few frames or has some jagged edges visible. People put way too much stock in the raw power of the machine which is why Microsoft and Sony keep releasing high priced consoles that are just hardware upgrades of the previous generation.
