You've watched the Super Mario Maker 2 Direct multiple times over, found out a bit more thanks to the game's eShop listing and perhaps heard more detailed explanations, so why not take the time out to listen to our lovely senior video producer, Alex Olney, talk about 19 secret details hidden in the latest presentation.
Yep, we're referring to the interesting things that were actually featured Nintendo's latest presentation but weren't actually discussed by Nintendo. We're talking about small pipes, angled pipes, Goombrats, clear conditions, the ability to dislike courses, medals – which appear to replicate an achievement system and much more. To hear what else you can expect to encounter in this upcoming sequel, make sure you watch the video above.
Did you learn anything new? Are you looking forward to the release of Super Mario Maker 2? Sound off in the comments below.

@gauthieryannick agreed. They either need a useful robust level rating system or they need to like you say have levels they pick. Hoping that Nintendo Life have a recommend section/video and articles. Be good to have a monthly countdown of the best user based levels.
Again with the stupid video, I clicked hoping to read a written list.
We need the ability to generate an overworld, so we can make and play sets of levels. Is that in?
@gauthieryannick Yeah, I agree. I guess I'd like a choice. We should able to jump into chaos randomness, or curated professionalism whenever we want via a menu choice. Also, I've never made a good level so some of those crappy levels people think a 5 year old made could've been mine. I'm not proud of this, but it's true.
And yeah, I pretty much skip levels with spikes everywhere. I can't enjoy a kaizo level unless I'm watching ryukhar play it.
@erv Yes, I want this. I'd also like to be able to download "games" rather than just levels. If someone is a great level creator why not let us put a whole series of their levels in coursebot as a game with a simple overworld? This would be awesome Nintendo!
I just hate having to use a single joy con for something like that when I paid 70 bucks for a better controller they wont even give me the option to use. Low blow, Nintendo.
@gauthieryannick @erv The problem I see with creating whole worlds, and possibly the reason why it might not be included, is the lack of professionalism required to create an enjoyable series of levels. We've seen those levels that are just a chaotic mess, imagine a world filled with them. Then the difficulty may spike too early, or fluctuate. There's a plausibility of putting Bowser in every single level in the world, creating a lack of a satisfying boss battle. There's a lot I think could go wrong. A genuinely great overworld with well thought-out levels would be amazing. How many of those would we find though? I'd say about as many as there are levels between a 5year olds mess and a kaizo kreation.
@J-Plap that seems to be just when playing in 2-player mode. Not sure why but that seems to be the case.
Great video, Alex is the best!
On the other hand mystery mushroom costumes and amiibo seem to be long gone.
@Euler Amiibo implementation in the Wii U's Mario Maker was an amazing feature, and one of the best uses of Amiibo in my opinion. I absolutely loved unlocking that pixel art (and the corresponding, character-specific sound effects).
I wonder why I'm not seeing many Nintendo websites mention this feature being dropped in all of their detailed previews and Nintendo-Direct analysis.
I'm thrilled with what I've seen of Mario Maker 2 and can't wait to purchase it. And the sheer amount of features and content are astounding. However you'd think gaming journalists would bring this up, especially since these are Nintendo-specific sites and we can assume many readers actually owned the Wii U version of Mario Maker.
@GrizzledVeteran Unlocking all of the Mystery Mushroom costumes was what kept me playing and addicted to the game. Here's hoping that whatever replacement they have will be worthwhile.
Gnat Attack, on the other hand, can go love itself.
This game will end up being my go to pick up and play game, until Animal Crossing comes out. Especially since now you can play levels together with friends at the same time, that feature right there is the key to me enjoying this game to the fullest. By the looks of the trailer, this game is going to expand on its predecessor in every single way, and in every single positive way.
I'm surprised you guys didn't notice/mention the clear hint they left in the direct that 3D Land will not be the only special game style. When they show the game selection at about the 9 minute mark, the text reads "Other Game Styles." That's styleS, with an S. My money is on them announcing SMB2 at E3, either included at launch or via DLC after the game is out.
I'm skeptical that you'll be forced to use 2 joy-cons in 2-player edit mode, as that doesn't seem to make a lot of sense. Maybe if the joy-cons are being used as pointers or something? But then why are they sideways? The other possibility is the Switch is undocked, but other games allow non-joy-con controllers in this mode so maybe not.
Hopefully it's just a misunderstanding they clear up at E3.
I wasn’t too hyped for this before the Direct. However, I’ve now watched it more times than I care to admit and I’m in hook, line and sinker.
@HeroOfCybertron You’re the hero we need, but maybe not the one we deserve. lol jk Yeah I hate videos... limited data at work.
Ugh, videos. Since one of the things mentioned was small, sloped "pipes" (which are just solid blocks in particular themes), I'll be skipping this one.
@WaxxyOne There was an article the other day about the missing style. My money is on Galaxy or Odyssey, I'm leaning towards the latter though. For one, all the other styles are in the order they released so it would look odd having Galaxy or SMB 2 sitting after SM3DW. Plus having an Odyssey theme is a good way to bring in more sales of the 3D game. Perhaps there will be more than one new style added though? I'd love a Galaxy theme, they could do so much with it.
@gauthieryannick I agree too. Have pre-ordered Super Mario Maker 2 because it looks awesome but am not sure now because finding decent levels to play in the first game was difficult.
"Don't be nosey"?!
