Re: Dallas Tech Company iLife Thinks Nintendo Stole Its Idea For Motion Control

WaxxyOne

I'm pretty sure I invented using motion for playing games when I came up with the idea of picking up two (2) plastic cubes with numbers on each side, tossing my arm around repeatedly to sufficiently randomize their orientation, and then releasing them onto the table or gaming surface (henceforth known as "THE SURFACE" — Microsoft, you'll be hearing from my lawyers as well) and using the resulting random number created by combining the two values shown on the top-most face of each cube to influence the board game I was playing.

This is bullpoopydoodiedoggiepooples, and I want my cut of Nintendo's profits too!
Please watch the profanity — TBD

Re: Nintendo Ordered to Pay Royalties on 3DS Sales For Patent Infringement

WaxxyOne

This guy isn't a patent troll, he has a genuine grievance against Nintendo. As much as I hate to see Nintendo lose a legal battle, vilifying him for using the law as it was intended is certainly not helpful. Hopefully the award, if it stands, will not hurt Nintendo too badly or impact the future of the 3DS console and hurt gamers, but they really should have been more careful about how they implemented the 3D technology in the first place.

Re: Nintendo Apologises for Nintendo Network Issues as Full eShop Services Return

WaxxyOne

Sony gave away a couple games from a (very) limited list.... after keeping quiet about the fact that all of your credit card information had been stolen weeks earlier.

Microsoft tried their very best to ignore the red ring o' death until the backlash became too great, then extended the console's warranty specifically for the RROD issue and redesigned the console to reduce the chance of it happening again.

Nintendo's online services have intermittent issues for 3 days and you guys all want free crap. Come on. This may have caused some of you a minor inconvenience when you couldn't go buy a new game without waiting until morning when the service was available. Big freaking whoop. I'm sure everyone would like free stuff, but Nintendo is under no obligation to provide it, especially with an outage this minor.

Re: Nintendo Network Services Now Starting to "Operate Normally"

WaxxyOne

The exact same issue occurred last year when people opened their Wii U on Christmas morning only to find out they had to wait for a 2+ GB system update to download before they could use their new system. There's a simple lesson to be learned here:

If you're a parent buying a Wii U (or any modern console for that matter) and planning to give it to your family on Christmas day, open that sucker up BEFORE XMas day arrives, get it online and patched up, and download the software and updates you're wanting to have when the kids open their shiny new gift on Christmas day. It doesn't matter what the service is, millions of people slamming it on the same morning is going to cause problems every time. Do the smart thing and plan ahead, people!

Re: Video: Just Look For The U On The Box, Nintendo's New Wii U Promotion Helpfully Suggests

WaxxyOne

This is a good effort to show the differences and gives the great games the spotlight they deserve, showing just enough footage for people to get the idea and want to head online to look up more info. I think it's also important to show the Wiimotes in use to clearly show that this is still a Nintendo console and your existing controllers can be used. I don't care so much about the lack of the pro controller because it's an optional accessory and would probably remind people too much of an Xbox controller. Nintendo is the company that wants to stand apart and show people how they're different, not create unwanted comparisons between them and their competitor's hardware.

Re: Rumour: Minecraft Is Already In Development For Wii U, GamePad Said To Be The Focus

WaxxyOne

It'd be cool to see MineCraft on the Wii U as I think the gamepad controls would do wonders for the crafting mechanic that had to be cut back for the 360 and PS3 releases. That said, I would only seriously consider this if it offered more than the other cut down console versions, such as expansive worlds (not size-limited to a certain region) and the newer PC features that were dropped to get those versions out the door.

Re: Review: Wii Sports Club: Golf (Wii U eShop)

WaxxyOne

I appreciate the attempt at a more realistic golf experience, and the amount of holes to play is nice, even if some of the ones based on NES Golf are completely unrealistic. What is weird to me is, I'm a decent amateur golfer in the real world, but I'm terrible at this game. After struggling to figure out what I was doing wrong, I arrived at the conclusion that the Wiimote's angle throughout your entire swing is measured to determine the ball's trajectory, when in reality the only thing that should count is where the head is when it makes contact with the ball. Because of this strange decision on Nintendo's part, I find the only way I can play is to abruptly stop my follow-through once the ball has been struck, which in real life would ruin a proper golf swing. I hope they fix that in a patch because it tarnishes the whole experience for me and it's the reason I'm not going to be buying that sport yet.

Re: Review: NES Remix (Wii U eShop)

WaxxyOne

@Henmii Oh don't worry, the wackiness is intact. It might not feature half-naked dudes showing off their chest hair and you don't have to pick anyone's nose, but some of the remixes are really bizarre, like the Mario Bros. level where the whole screen zooms way out, or an Excitebike track where everything is green and the screen periodically "pings" as if someone is scanning using SONAR. The qualify of this is really mixed for me. On the one hand I love the silhouette levels which remind me of Donkey Kong Country Returns and add a little challenge without taking you completely out of the zone. I also love the few cross-over challenges I've unlocked so far, but a lot of the "remixes" are just the normal game with funky graphic and sound overlays and don't really do much more than annoy you while you play.

Re: Review: NES Remix (Wii U eShop)

WaxxyOne

I want to love this, I really do. I grabbed it immediately after the Nintendo Direct was over and enjoyed it for a couple hours. Then I started unlocking the crappy games. Golf, Pinball, Clu-Clu Land, Ice Climbers, etc. Playing those games is more like a chore than an enjoyable experience, and it really mars the whole experience for me. I would have loved to see more of the fan favorites from the NES era, such as Metroid, Punch-Out or Dr. Mario. The games included are all from fairly early in the system's life, and maybe that was intentional, but it means they had to reach pretty deeply into the grab bag of crap for some of the titles on display.

I hope this will be enough of a success for Nintendo that they will consider expanding it or put out a sequel with some of the better titles (or maybe the SNES version that everyone seems to want) because this idea has a lot of promise. It's just the execution that is somewhat flawed.

Re: Rumour: Smash Bros. Heading for a Spring 2014 Release

WaxxyOne

Whoever started this rumor is being really, REALLY optimistic. At BEST the game could be released in time for next Christmas, and they'd probably have to rush it to make that happen. I doubt Nintendo even knows which quarter they'll be releasing it in. They might have a target, but this early in development that's probably going to shift.

Re: Soapbox: Nintendo's Appearance at VGX Underwhelmed, But the Show Itself Was Far Worse

WaxxyOne

I've never watched the VGA in any form because I could tell from a mile away it was mainstream BS to pander to an audience of imbiciles who like to think of themselves as gamers. As with most media, the creators of that show don't really take gaming seriously, and believe that if they just wallow in the negative stereotypes, they'll get the ratings they're looking for. The sad thing is, they're probably right. But if you're looking for an event that takes gaming seriously, this is not it, and it never was. I can only hope Nintendo does not repeat the mistake of agreeing to show up in the future.

Re: Weirdness: Super Mario 64 Corruptions Yield Hilarious and/or Terrifying Results

WaxxyOne

It really shouldn't shock anyone that you can cause some seriously messed up stuff to happen just by changing memory location values randomly. It's the digital equivalent of giving someone a lobotomy... weird stuff is going to result every time, and of course when the game is 3D, a lot of it is going to revolve around incorrectly placed textures, vertices and character skeletons.

Re: Nintendo "Would Like to Enrich" Its Virtual Console Lineup

WaxxyOne

I'd really like to see Nintendo do more to embrace their classic games. The fact is, whether it's legal or not, simple emulation has been available for a long time. Good emulators even take that farther by adding multiple save states, numerous graphic filters and color options for systems like the Gameboy. Meanwhile Nintendo keeps peddling games that aren't modified from their original releases in any way, though at least it was nice to see them add proper save state support for the 3DS and Wii U (even if it is only one slot).

What I think Nintendo could do better is to offer something those emulators can't — additional content and features to classic games. To use a simple example, Excitebike could allow users to save a large number of custom tracks, and distribute them online over Miiverse or through some other sharing method. This could move the game out of novelty category into something with an active, thriving community, and that's just one game. It was also very disappointing when rather than expending a little bit of extra effort to make Oracle of Ages/Seasons link with each other when they're both on the same device, they instead opted just to kill all system link interactions in the game, and left it up to the player to figure out how to transfer codes from one game to the other. They didn't even enable the Gameboy Advance features, for crying out loud! (I can access both features on an emulator, by the way)

Nintendo has a great treasure trove of classic games and they have been pretty successful in utilizing them to make cash, but it'd sure be nice if they embraced those classic games instead of lazily throwing them onto the service and expecting people to continuing paying for the exact same thing they released 30 years ago.

Re: EA: Being Voted The Worst Company In America Was "A Wake Up Call"

WaxxyOne

Let's see. What could EA have possibly done to get themselves recognized as the worst company of all time? Well...

1. Forced development teams to hide their own name so the only thing the player sees is either EA or EA Sports (unless your Maxis, in which case you're too big of a developer to keep hidden).
2. Created a sweatshop development atmosphere which grinds developers and testers into the ground before unceremoniously dumping them at the end of the development cycle.
3. Released games with rampant game-breaking glitches unapologetically, then adopted the policy to drop support of their games one year from the release date.
4. Created a policy of releasing the same sports titles year after year with minor updates past the change in jerseys and player numbers.
5. Was the first 3rd-party company to start charging customers for DLC that should have been included in the original packaging.
6. Crossed the line more than any other gaming company with what types of game content to consider DLC — including tutorial videos.
7. Proved they don't care at all about game balance by offering premium and preorder content that gives online gamers a blatant edge over opponents packing the base game.
8. Insulted Nintendo gamers by releasing terrible ports and sports sequels that literally changed nothing but the title screen.
9. Dropped the Wii U as a platform before it had a chance to gain any steam, thus further helping to ensure it never would.
10. Lied about said dropping of the Wii U as a platform with endless platitudes talking about all the games that aren't actually being released to the system.

I don't know, EA, it seems like you just got a bad deal, huh? If you want to make me happy, go bankrupt. In the meantime don't let the door hit you in the donkey on your way out.

Re: Review: Arcade Classics 3D (3DS eShop)

WaxxyOne

@LunaticPandora Both of those games were in arcades. As mentioned above, Bust-A-Move was a Neo Geo title, which of course was present in many arcades. Admittedly, Tetris started life on the PC, but because of the time it came out and its popularity, an arcade version was inevitable. I had one in my local arcade growing up. (Admittedly that was in the 80s...)

Re: Review: Arcade Classics 3D (3DS eShop)

WaxxyOne

@LunaticPandora Well, if they'd done them right, Bust-A-Move and Tetris are arcade classics. Bejeweled, not so much.

I think it's most insulting that developers still think they can slap together bad clones of old games and peddle them onto the eShop where people will buy them. It's not like you can't easily find ways to play the originals of all of these games through other means, and unlike this pile of garbage those versions are actually enjoyable. The failure to even implement a proper high score screen for arcade games just takes the cake — you have to seriously try hard to be as incompetent as these idiots.

Re: The Wii Mini Will Arrive in the U.S. in November

WaxxyOne

I wonder if they've altered the code of Mario Kart Wii to hide the online functionality, and if so if they did it in any kind of competent way (or are we talking Oracle of Seasons/Ages-style disabling that leaves the omission glaring?... "Go talk to that snake about connecting your systems to transfer items. (Except that you can't, so don't.)")

Re: Rayman Legends Lands With A Thud At Japanese Retail

WaxxyOne

Ahahahaha! How's the taste of just desserts, Ubisoft? If this had come out within the first couple months as the promised Wii U-exclusive it was supposed to be, I can't help but think those numbers would be much more satisfactory. Oh well, maybe the watered-down versions you pushed to last year's consoles will make up the difference for you? Yeah, probably not.

Re: Shigeru Miyamoto Clarifies That Local Multiplayer is Still the Priority for Mario

WaxxyOne

I am with Nintendo that these games are best played in local multiplayer. That said, I wish they would add the option for online because sometimes it's not feasible to get the people you want to play with in the same room, house or even city. Nintendo should let the players decide whether they want to use online, because the endless excuses of "Well we didn't think this was a game you'd want to play over the Internet" is getting old.

The Wii U has the potential to be Nintendo's first console that really embraces online play. It's 2 generations late to the party. Nintendo, please step it up.

Re: Aonuma Demonstrates the Challenges of Creating a 3D Environment Based on A Link to the Past's Overworld

WaxxyOne

@Kirk: Seriously, Aonuma decided he wanted to create a Zelda game that exactly recreated the look of ALttP, and he decided that one of the most important things was to keep the same perspective. You can call that an error in judgement all you want, but it was his call to make and I (and a lot of other people I'm sure) think the results look just fine. Keep in mind he was under no obligation to provide this glimpse into the development process and if he hadn't we wouldn't be having this discussion either.

Also, I don't want to burst your bubble or anything, but your ability to form a dissenting opinion and post it online doesn't make you special, as that is in fact what everyone arguing with you is doing. The core difference is no one else seems to be arrogant enough to refer to their own opinions as fact or belittle someone else for not sharing your world-view.

Re: Eiji Aonuma Explains Why The Legend of Zelda Isn't a Yearly Franchise

WaxxyOne

I think Nintendo is on the right track for this franchise, even if the little kid in me is constantly wishing for a Wii U Zelda title RIGHT NOW DARN IT!!

Ahem. Nintendo has showed love to the franchise with updated releases and VC rereleases while focusing on bringing out a new original title once or twice per console. That's probably the perfect system and I hope it doesn't ever change.

Re: Just Dance 2014 UK Commercial Lands Ubisoft And Nintendo In Hot Water

WaxxyOne

Who are these people that see a commercial, think they here a "taboo" word, and immediately pick up their cellphones so they can tweet about how offended they are? Don't you have anything better to do? Could you at least be bothered to look up the facts before posting misinformation? Ignorant people piss me off so very much...

Re: Michel Ancel: The Biggest Surprises Seem To Come From Nintendo

WaxxyOne

This man speaks truth. Nintendo is all about innovation and trying new things. The unfortunate truth is that means that sometimes your new stuff is a flop (see: Virtual Boy). But, it also results in some truly epic moments that further advance the gaming industry (see: Wii).

What kills me is the people who can be heard bemoaning Nintendo for it's "terrible" Wii U console these days when they were all on board when the original Wii hit the shelves. They're the same people benefitting from Nintendo's gaming innovations that inspired things like dual analog controllers, force feedback, motion control (and Kinect which is basically the same thing), etc. I shudder to think what would happen if Nintendo stepped out of the hardware market as some suggest they should do. Who would Microsoft and Sony copy then? Each other? Great, then I guess I'll look forward to the PlayStation 7 and Xbox Zero-Point-Two-Five in a couple decades, each featuring controllers that haven't changed since the PS2/360, selling for $900 a pop and whose best game is Call of Duty 133: Modern Warfare 17: Black Ops 4 1/2.
