Re: Guide: How To Use A GameCube Controller With Your Nintendo Switch

TromboneGamer

@Azooooz What kind of ideas are you talking about exactly? If you're talking in terms of adding things to the meta of any particular game of course it's going to be hard to convince someone you have a good idea.

@Exy In terms of the competitive scene I'd say it's generally like any other community. Followers of the scene have favorite players, characters, and the kids probably troll tournament streams and videos spouting insults at anyone/anything they don't like. Of course each smash game is a lot different from it's successor/predecessor. A lot of the "prescriptivism" probably stems from that fact. Discussion about adding characters/items/modes for future games probably doesn't happen as much as it used to. I don't know how much/if you care for the game(s) or not so it's hard to tell if that has anything to do with what you've seen from the community.

Re: Nintendo Reveals More Details About its Paid Online Service

TromboneGamer

@cfgk24 Developers don't have too much trouble providing servers for PC games and PSN was fine last generation. Sure the network was hacked and info was leaked, but that had nothing to do with the money they were making. The Subscription fee is just something that Microsoft introduced and through marketing convinced casual players that they were getting the best online multiplayer. Therefore, the online community on Xbox was/is typically more active and creates the perception of better service. There's no real proof that the extra revenue is providing something they couldn't before.

Re: Nintendo Reveals More Details About its Paid Online Service

TromboneGamer

@cfgk24 You're passion and belief in the company is admirable, but my argument still stands. At this point I have not seen proof compelling enough that a subscription has a meaningful impact on the online service that couldn't have been provided without it. Until someone comes forward with meaningful statistics and reasoning to justify this business practice to consumers I'm not convinced.

Re: Nintendo Reveals More Details About its Paid Online Service

TromboneGamer

@cfgk24 You see, I'm not at all convinced that subscriptions lead to higher quality service. The discounts might make up for it especially if you make enough purchases, but in the end, a feature that was provided at no extra cost is now locked behind a paywall. There's no indication, to my knowledge, that companies are burdened financially enough to ask for more money to provide "quality service."

Re: Developer Survey Reveals Worrying Lack Of Interest In Nintendo Switch

TromboneGamer

While Nintendo has seemingly done a better job of cultivating some kind of interest in the Switch from most major publishers the majority of developers knew nothing about it for a long time. So most of those who were left in the dark are probably only considering producing content for it right now. On the other hand, I'd say Nintendo is lucky that even today that there are developers out there who consider having their game on a Nintendo console an honor.

Re: Pokkén Tournament and ARMS in the Running for Evo 2017 Player's Choice Spot

TromboneGamer

I have to agree with the FGC people I follow on twitter. Having ARMS take the spot of a more seasoned title would be kind of dumb. Assuming the game launches in April that would give it only a few months to build a community that takes the game seriously enough for sizeable competition. And that's assuming there would be a community that takes the game seriously enough to compete at EVO of all places. Of course if the game can deliver a competitive experience that's also entertaining to watch I'm all for it, but let's give it some time.

Re: Super Smash Bros. Melee Match Touted as One of Greatest Ever

TromboneGamer

@DanteSolablood When I first saw people playing like this I was baffled and maybe even a little angry because it hardly looks like they're playing smash bros. Of course I got over that and thoroughly enjoy it as well as mostly understand the complexities now. But it's hard for me to comprehend this as boring.

Re: Talking Point: Unique and Affordable - Nintendo's NX Needs to Avoid Direct Competition With PlayStation and Xbox

TromboneGamer

I think that with the right games a console that is "unique and affordable" will always take off. As much as I love the Wii and how successful it was I never felt like I was treated the same as a PS3 or 360 owner. Sure the Wii had unique games, among them was a decent pool of excellent ones, but a lot of them were concepts that weren't fully realized either, even if it was that tiny flaw or two that kept them from being truly remarkable experiences. Perhaps it's selfish of me to expect more, but I think people who choose to play Nintendo hardware should have access to just as many games in their intended form as the competition and unfortunately that means it needs to have comparable hardware.

How will they do it? Well if rumors are anything to go by porting will be easier than ever before which lightens the need for particularly powerful hardware. When the console gets an install base it'll be up to devs to deliver quality games, but the easier it is to get the game on the system the better. Let's just hope the NX doesn't get shunned because it's not exactly the same as its older brothers, or even worse, gets loaded with "shovelware."

Re: Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night Has Been Delayed To 2018

TromboneGamer

As previously mentioned I'm kinda glad for the delay because it will probably get an NX port now. However, it's one less game to look forward to next year which is always a bit disappointing, even if there will be plenty of highly anticipated games arriving early in the year. Also, hopefully this eases the work load for the team that is doing Vita port.

Re: Feature: What We Expect From the 3DS Nintendo Direct - 1st September

TromboneGamer

Well if the rumor that the 3DS will be supported for another two years is true I expect that there are plenty of big games for the system planned. I'm not really expecting anything that hasn't been announced already to be revealed in the direct, but the possibility is definitely there. At this point I would have liked Nintendo to be a bit more keen on moving on from the 3DS, though.

Re: Fresh Nintendo Patents Reinforce Concept of NX Featuring Detachable Controllers

TromboneGamer

@ThanosReXXX Good on ya mate. Oh man it's so crazy that we're already back to more x86 based rumors again. Anyway, I do find it odd that if Nintendo is keen to announce its new console that all the recent Patents would seem more fitting for a handheld device. Of course, the two devices could share many features between each other. At the end of the day the NX rumor mill is a much wilder ride than the Wii U ever was and hopefully that's a good thing.

Re: Fresh Nintendo Patents Reinforce Concept of NX Featuring Detachable Controllers

TromboneGamer

@ThanosReXXX Eurogamer is a very credible website, at least according to NL and the majority of the games journalism community, and while I'm sure they've been wrong before we're too close to the reveal of the NX for these latest rumors to be too far off. Liam is also certain that the NX will have a Tegra chip (either X1 or X2) which does NOT use x86 architecture. We'd been getting so many rumors confirming AND denying x86 and ARM architecture just for it to turn around a couple weeks ago which may point to something: such as different models or even a different system entirely.

As for Rogers, I suppose she is no different from us right now, but she has been right before and I don't believe she's been all that rude. if she composes herself correctly perhaps at some point she'll publish her own articles. But, perhaps I'm being too positive...

I'm also curious what you're idea of the NX is based on the holes in the rumors we've had? All in good fun, of course.

Re: Fresh Nintendo Patents Reinforce Concept of NX Featuring Detachable Controllers

TromboneGamer

@ThanosReXXX While I haven't followed Rogers closely enough to see all of her E3 claims I'll definitely be looking into those more closely. It would seem her assertion that the NX would not be x86, at the very least, was correct based on the recent rumors which are the most credible to date. I am also quite sure that most of the rumors she posts have some sort of disclaimer. If Liam is anything to go by she likely has similar contacts in the industry though the argument that she rarely references them directly is an extremely fair point of criticism.

Now, I don't go day to day stressing over people who face the wrath of the internet, but I definitely think those who are prone to grieving investigative journalists should do their research and put things into perspective.

Re: Reggie Fils-Aime on Why the Wii U Was Misunderstood

TromboneGamer

You know something went wrong when Nintendo doesn't know how to sell their own product. On the surface, the gamepad's concept has extremely little appeal to most of today's gamers. Far too few games took advantage of gamepad + TV multiplayer. Support for two gamepads was never implemented which could have brought more compelling experiences though was probably impossible without drastically reduced visuals. Even if the Wii U managed to attract a more Wii or 3DS sized user base, it's horsepower would still have been reason enough for many highly acclaimed 3rd party games to skip the console. Ports of other games would obviously not look as good as their counterparts and likely be missing a lot of content. In the end many adopters, much like the Wii would be left unsatisfied unless you are indeed the kind of person to play only Nintendo games. Perhaps that is the greatest disservice consoles like the Wii and Wii U did to their players. There were many great games on the Wii U that I'm glad I got to play but I'm not satisfied. However, I am very interested in the kind of experiences the NX will be able to offer. Yet, it could end up in a place much like the Wii. Providing a lot of incredible experiences both traditional and new, but lacking many games and content that everyone else gets to play except for the players who chose to buy an NX.
TLDR: Wii U had great games, but Nintendo didn't know what they were doing. Hopefully the NX is awesome but strives to address the grievances I had with the Wii and Wii U.

Re: Talking Point: Considering the Angles of a Portable and Dynamic Nintendo NX

TromboneGamer

While it does seem the X1 is a very capable GPU when paired with a proper CPU I don't think the NX will be up to the task of porting the rest of this generations' games and will certainly spell trouble in the mainstream 3rd party department. A scenario I don't want Nintendo's consoles to ever go through again. So, hopefully NX is running the new X2 chip which, also, hopefully is leagues ahead compared to its prestigious predecessor.

Re: Poll: Did Nintendo Triumph With The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild at E3?

TromboneGamer

Well as far as showing off one (technically two) game goes I'd say it went as well as it possibly could. The lack of new games will always make this particular E3 a bit sour, but thankfully Zelda exceeded my expectations (though seems to have divided others like every other entry). On the other hand a game this enticing doesn't make the wait for NX and everything else next year any easier.
