Quite a while ago a leaked 3DS eShop listing outed a re-release of Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, and it's now been revealed during the Nintendo Treehouse stream at E3 2017. Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions will arrive on 6th October.
You can see a trailer below, which shows the + Bowser's Minions part of the name as related to new content where you bring together enemy characters in an army to rescue the big boss, led by 'Captain Goomba'.
As you can see, the visuals adopt the style seen in the 3DS-generation Mario & Luigi games, which is a very welcome touch.
So, are you excited about this one?

A round of applause to the leaker who spoiled one of Nintendo's few E3 surprises for a little attention. Bravo.
Already have the original on Wii U VC, and I don't know if the extra content would justify it. Really surprised by this though because I thought Nintendo was done revealing stuff.
Nice! I'm overdue for a replay of this. I remember it being really well written. Hope they don't try to charge more than 10 bucks, but considering the minor upgrades I reckon it's likely.
Bowser's Minions looks fantastic fun!
Yes.
@Giygas_95 Well they've already announced two games this way. They already revealed the 3DS Metroid game during the treehouse.
@Giygas_95
Nintendo will sometimes throw us something new during the Treehouse segments. Keep hitting refresh.
Day 1
This is still the best M&L game in my opinion, and Bowser's Minions looks like a great addition, will get this for sure, probably not at launch though, too many great games coming out this year haha
Love it, wanted to see some gameplay first before I commented so thanks treehouse. Honestly even if Nintendo hasn't officially "won" E3 they did at least to me. But then again I am a huge Kirby fan!
Nintendo is really killing it with E3 this year.
I love seeing these classic Superstar Saga moments recreated in 3D!
As excited I am to be buying this (again) on my 3DS, I hope there's more additions added to the original game (so far, Emergency Guard and Heart Blocks are returning). I mean, I thought Minion Quest looked very fun, but Treehouse focused waaaaayy too much on that mode.
@ieatdragonz Speaking of Kirby, I wouldn't be surprised if Blowout Blast and the unnamed 3DS title show up.
At first glance I thought they friggin' did the Mario + The Minions crossover I was joking about when the Rabbids thing was leaked...
@SmaMan Mario's Minions vs the Raving Rabbids: Catastrophic Hijinxs
If you didnt play the original, you owe it to yourself to buy it, it's a great game.
If you are like me who did play it, lets be honest...we are buying this.
It'll be great to return to the original Mario and Luigi world after Mario and Luigi: Paper Jam.
Definitely! I great addition alongside my copy of Bowser's Inside Story!
I still have my beloved GBA SP and the game and I still replay it from time to time, so I think I'll pass.
But I recommend it to everyone, it's a wonderful game and one of my all-time faves.
@Giygas_95 They said up front that they were going to reveal additional games during the Treehouse event. Also, the Spotlight was only for Switch games, so any new 3DS reveals are going to come to us through the Treehouse.
Nintendo already won E3 during the first 15 minutes of their presentation. The fact they're STILL bringing out surprises is phenomenal.
Can't wait to get it!
Looking forward the soundtrack. Wonder how they will turn out and I hope they don't disappoint.
Great game. Already played the original though so will pass though.
Unpopular opinion: I hated the original (and its next two sequels were even worse), but the 3DS iteration of Dream Team was good outside of the broken giant battles, Paper Jam... exists I guess?
I'll be interested to see more gameplay footage as we get closer to release.
Getting this day 1. Never played the original game
me likey
Interested...
Day 600. Gamestop $22. Looks like a great game!
Very, very good year to be heavily invested in the Nintendo ecosystem.
Great news! I literally bought (just a couple months ago) a used DSi XL and a (cough) SuperCard, just so I could play this and the GBA version of Yoshi's Island again, on a backlit screen. I'll definitely be buying this...October looks like a very busy month, when is Xenoblade 2 coming out?
Meh. Also, "Game only in 2D". Even Nintendo can't be bother to make 3D games for their own console...
I only really care about the "Superstar Saga" part, Nintendo.
Glad to see the leak was real, now the 3DS can once again play all M&L games. Too bad my hype was "chicken-blocked" (catch my drift) upon learning that no, "10/6/17" means the sixth of October, and not the tenth of June. Damn you, American date format!
Also, Bowser's Minions. I couldn't bet one penny on it upon learning of its title... and then we see it makes canon welding between Superstar Saga and the rest of the series' lore.
They didn't need to go the extra mile, but they did anyway. MAD PROPS.
@Aerona Why is that something to be mad about?
3DS has got to have one of the best quality libraries ever... good to bad game ratio wise
Nintendo has won E3. It's not even particularly close.
Never played the original so sign me up!
Definitely looking forward to what looks like the ability to instantly select field abilities on the touch screen. One of the few issues I had with the original was how long it could take to cycle through all of the moves (since R and L both have exclusive moves and combinations in the first game)
What is going on (again) at Mushroom Kingdom ?
Superstar Saga is an awesome game and definitely worthy of a remake.
That art style is kind of off to me though...too sterilized and not as exaggerated as the original material.
I have no interest to replay a classic when I bought it on Wii U VC, but have interest to play the Bowser's Minion story.
They really haven't topped this game in the series. The best news: no Starlow because I'm seriously getting tired of him being dragged back out in every M&L game to act as "the voice"
@Baker1000
Is this considered same series as Mario and Luigi Dream Team? I only played this for a few minutes, couldn't get into Inside Story, and only went for Dream Team because it was a pack-in with my Year of Luigi 3ds (yes, Luigi is the best!)
I think I passed cuz they made Luigi look stupid, but I loved Dream Team so .... should I play this and why? lol
@Muddy_4_Ever
@RupeeClock
Hate to say it: Microsoft won this year's E3. The Last Night, Sea of Thieves, Cuphead, Anthem, etc looks amazing.
Nice! I never finished SS, so I think I'll get this one over the VC version.
I've always thought the visual style of the 3DS generation matched really well with the 3DS too. Good call Thomas. 😋
This is going to be an expensive year
Its just a remake, but it does look very nice in the modern style. And while I don't know how substantial the new stuff is, I might still get it.
I remember the difficulty on this being quite high. Beating it once is probably enough for me
Day one for buy for me. Love the original Superstar Saga so much, can't wait to battle the Koopalings again.
@JaxonH Agreed. The only other library that's similar to the 3DS in terms of quality is the SNES, but I feel that that system's library is still better by the nose.
@speedracer216 it just had the best formula. Since then they started adding things to change it up every time, like the baby characters in Partners in Time (which had a central hub instead of an open ended world which I didn't like), or side scrolling sections inside bowser or Luigi's dreams. The battles were straight forward too, none of the giant or paper craft battles of the last 3 games. The other games were good, but I enjoyed them a lot less. I'm hoping they haven't added too much like this into the game. It also had the best story and the best villain(s)
I'm disappointed to be honest as I've played Superstar Saga twice now so it will be all to familiar for me. I preferred Partners in Time myself but each to their own.
New players will enjoy it though.
