Some enemy counters certainly seem borderline unfair or at the very least noticeably more difficult than your typical hollow knight combat. That being said the real frustration comes from the backtracking needed just to runback to a particularly difficult fight. That frustration comes more from wasting my time rather than testing my skills against an enemy.
@CaptainQuo Who are you referring to exactly? Nate is a typically reasonable commentator with fairly reliable connections. When you're working with people who are under NDA you're going to get spotty information occasionally that's just the nature of the business. There are far worse people to be giving attention to.
@480frames-please Yeah the funny thing is the better a game runs on a poor performing screen the worse it will look at least in content with fast moving objects.
@Dr_Lugae it's not, it can be seen if you're actually looking for it and as I've mentioned in other posts it will feel a bit worse to play on due to the lacking response time but of course mileage will vary.
@BigRadical I mean I don't know how good your vision is but my eyes can definitely see the ghosting and blur and it's more than that, the screen is also laggy so it will feel worse as well. To what degree each of those flaws are perceived will vary per person but they're definitely there. It's ok to criticize things that most people will be ok with and the people who actually care about the lacking performance can still appreciate what it does well.
@jsty3105 Well there's that I guess. If that's the case it makes a swoled 2 very unlikely at least in the current switch 2 form factor any time soon unless they're willing to bite the bullet on a custom design.
@hammers1man From what I understand street fighter 6 on switch 2 is scaling from around 540 to 1080 in docked mode and it looks fine. This custom DLSS variant seems to be very efficient at reconstructing images so in handheld mode I'm not too worried honestly.
@hammers1man I think that's a pretty generous upscale estimate tbh. It's a lot more likely games will upscale from 540p or less to 1080 which from what I understand still looks fine to good. Problem is that's still a lot of rendering power for the device even given that it's incredibly efficient. Not to mention Nintendo seems to be largely uninterested in utilizing DLSS for their games at the moment and a rare few games will actually run at 120fps.
@hammers1man That's a fair take I think. You could still get a competent screen that isn't OLED, but in the mobile space OLED is such a ubiquitous technology I fail to see how Nintendo could fail to get a good deal on one that fit the form factor of the HW. Guess the competition is just too great?
@RasandeRose Honestly they should have stuck with 720p even if they still needed a bigger screen. Instead they went whole hog with the "bigger is better" philosophy- double refresh frate and double resolution without the HW necessary to fully take advantage of those features and killed the battery life on the way too.
@Anguspuss If you're enjoying your screens that's great but it ultimately comes down to your points of comparison right? Sorry to hear your eyesight isn't what it used to be by the way as I've personally been experiencing poorer vision in recent years and would hate for it to get worse lol.
@SirLink Not personally no but I can definitely see it being a big improvement largely because BotW doesn't look that great on an swoled in the first place. With the Switch 2 you get massively improved performance and pretty good colors for an LCD screen so no surprise there.
@SirLink I regularly use monitors that peak around 400nits in SDR and I still find the swoled screen to be spectacular at full brightness with vivid mode on so it's interesting to hear that you actually enjoy the switch 2 screen more for its brightness.
@Gorlock Ok it seems like your rig is sufficient in that case. Some things to consider are whether your fans are working properly, your power supply is big enough, and that perhaps your CPU needs to have its thermal paste replaced or even a better cooler. In some particularly rare scenarios the thermal paste on the GPU may also need to be replaced. In the case of the 1080 I'm not sure what exactly went wrong there, maybe a faulty card? You certainly should have been getting better performance especially in games of the time it was released. A $1000 LCD definitely sounds like it would be a competent screen so no surprise you are fine with it.
Also as you mentioned the fact that switch 2 just makes games run better will definitely improve your perception of its screen overall which is fair. When it comes down to it a good system comes down to good synergy between its components. The big stinker about the Switch 2 screen is simply that it wasn't as good as Nintendo chalked it up to be.
@eaglebob345 Yes, but the particular graph used was just using the performance of the screens running at 60hz for the point of comparison. At 120hz I expect the results to be largely similar.
@Gorlock Again, if you're happy with your components that's great, but I would heavily disagree that when it comes down to it that the performance of a screen or a graphics card is just numbers. There are all kinds of things that come down to how your experience with your OLED or your 1080 was less than stellar. Especially in the case of the OLED you mentioned having to deal with pixel refresh which I can certainly understand being annoying and maybe detract from the benefits you SHOULD be getting from a quality OLED screen, namely perfectly accurate colors and extremely clear motion compared to a typical LCD in addition to better responsiveness. I should also note that running games at 2k or 4k on older HW especially a 1080 in newer games will not only be extremely difficult but due to it not being as efficient as modern cards you will get hotter temperatures when the card is performing at its peak. From what it sounds like maybe your PC specs aren't a good fit for an 4k OLED screen or perhaps the brand or specific monitor is known for quality control issues. All this to say that if that is the case it would make sense that the 1080p screen works better for you. If you've upgraded your PC to play 4K games and are still experiencing issues there could be any number of things causing your heating issues which you may need to look into. And if you otherwise are fine enjoying what you have that's ok too. I just don't think it's a good idea to shrug off the performance of a piece of HW as entirely negligible for real world experience even if you personally aren't noticing a difference because that just isn't the case.
@Discostew Well the latency will actually do more than make games look worse they will also feel worse to play which will only become more apparent over time.
@Gorlock If that's your experience than that's great but I honestly would be surprised if you put those screens side by side and actually saw no difference. Also I assume when you mention 980 to 1080 you were referring to resolution? Honestly not a surprise you didn't see much difference if that's the case since those resolutions aren't far off. If you were referring to your graphics card than actually it's a good thing you didn't notice that much difference because the 1080 was a very forward looking piece of hardware for the time and would make sense that you continued to get good performance in your games.
@HalBailman I'm not saying there wasn't any truth to them but you're making sweeping claims based on what exactly? There's a reason I said most people are probably fine with the quality of the screen and that's because I really haven't seen that many people sing its praises other than maybe "it's better than I expected". Yeah maybe that even means most people are more than happy with the screen. More power to them I guess but that doesn't take away from its inherent flaws.
It's not really an HDR screen and it actually performs worse in motion clarity and response than the switch 1 which frankly is quite embarrassing and has real world implications for some games as DF demonstrated in their review. In your original comment you claimed that some of their assertions were ludicrous, but clearly, whether they realize it or not, those flaws will affect the user experience for some people more than others. They put the screen through its paces and made mostly reasonably assessments of its deficiencies and its strengths. The truth of the matter is that in at least one way the screen was worse than the original system. I hardly find that to be ludicrous.
@AussieMcBucket No problem but even if you do find the deficiencies bothersome at some point at least there's plenty of other reasons to enjoy the system.
@RasandeRose I mean yeah maybe most people didn't notice the flaws in the screen but that doesn't mean there aren't people who did even if they couldn't articulate them. Claiming that almost no one noticed those flaws is also speculation if you ask me.
@AussieMcBucket I also wasn't exactly blown away with the OLED when I tried a Demo unit, but trust me when you max out the brightness and have the display in vivid mode it makes a world of difference. Also, yes the latency and ghosting are inherent to the nature of the screen. It's still better than the original switch screen thanks to better color reproduction and a host of modern features, but the negatives are still pretty big if you're sensitive to those things. @TanukiSan7x Well I would dare to argue that yes most users will be profoundly ignorant but that doesn't mean they aren't enjoying the screen for what it is. That being said, there is hardly any software that's able to actually take advantage of the 120hz refresh rate which could alleviate the motion clarity issues at least a little bit. Sure people are having a good time now, but at least for some of them those rose-tinted glasses will lose their luster.
@TanukiSan7x Pretty sure he's said himself like 90% of people will not have a critical eye for these things. The reason to be upset about it is that it's still a cheap aspect of the product when it comes down to it and since most people won't realize that it has some real problems companies can take advantage of their ignorance.
@coolioam Perhaps I didn't make myself clear then. It actually doesn't have to be this way, but people get manipulated into maintaining the status quo or giving up things that they really shouldn't.
@hYdeks It's true that games cost more to make now but how that correlates to standard pricing is something I highly doubt you or I have a full grasp on. There are things like risk and distribution to consider as well. There is one thing we know for sure, though, and that's that companies want to maximize profit.
@coolioam The "that's just how it is" mind set that you applied to the situation. Companies want to charge $80 for games and some people will buy it because of FOMO and brand/series loyalty. They wanted to charge people to play games online and now you can't do that without a subscription so people eventually caved. Same logic. Pointing out the reality doesn't justify these business decisions.
@N00BiSH From my understanding, culturally speaking, Japanese leadership and artists are extremely competitive and often petty. The artists/composers in particular may have respect for certain prestigious individuals, but that respect has to go both ways. This is why Sakurai had the influence to add a crazy number of guest characters in Smash Ultimate. So that certainly could be a factor in their reluctance to credit certain people, but to what extent that's true I can't say for sure.
@RetroGames Something tells me you either have not spent a significant of time with an OLED screen or maybe the device you mentioned has a particularly high-quality LCD panel. If the Switch 2 does have an LCD screen I doubt they would use the latest and greatest LCD technology especially if you can produce OLED screens at a comparable price.
An OLED screen won't necessarily be a deal breaker for me, but I certainly won't be playing it much in handheld mode without one. At the moment I'm mostly hoping that the system will finally support HDR and have plenty of games that run at a crisp 1080p or ideally 2k which is the resolution of the monitor I'm currently using for all my systems.
@Medic_alert @Steel76 As others here mentioned it doesn't look THAT good. There are things about the game that look good but it doesn't look that much different from prime remastered especially at a glance. Personally, I'm a bit disappointed that the game is limited by Switch hardware because the environments looked pretty cramped which is par for the course for Metroid I guess but there are other things like a lack of foliage in the forest we see at the end of the trailer. It's a very "as good as it gets on switch" looking game.
@Scapetti I mean everyone's entitled to their opinion, but objectively speaking the Knight port is an ugly almost literally unplayable mess. It's a shame because the game is fun, but it was always a stretch that the game could run at all on switch.
@Kilroy My NMH 2 collector's box came damaged at the top, but my shantae seven sirens box was fine. Even back then it took forever for them to ship. I'm very annoyed having to wait for my Rayz collection from Strictly Limited, but the quality of their releases seems to be generally good though. Not that that matters to me much since I just got a standard copy.
The Teleconnect Shooter collection was also rated by the ESRB and listed as being published by Limited Run. It's nice that they're publishing these games that would otherwise not have been localised, but their physicals have not been up to par lately from what I've heard.

Re: Review: Batman: Arkham Trilogy (Switch) - Two Solid Ports, One Technical Disaster
@Scapetti I mean everyone's entitled to their opinion, but objectively speaking the Knight port is an ugly almost literally unplayable mess. It's a shame because the game is fun, but it was always a stretch that the game could run at all on switch.
Re: M2's 'Kyukyoku Tiger-Heli Collection' For Switch Has Been Rated By The ESRB
@Kilroy My NMH 2 collector's box came damaged at the top, but my shantae seven sirens box was fine. Even back then it took forever for them to ship. I'm very annoyed having to wait for my Rayz collection from Strictly Limited, but the quality of their releases seems to be generally good though. Not that that matters to me much since I just got a standard copy.
Re: M2's 'Kyukyoku Tiger-Heli Collection' For Switch Has Been Rated By The ESRB
The Teleconnect Shooter collection was also rated by the ESRB and listed as being published by Limited Run. It's nice that they're publishing these games that would otherwise not have been localised, but their physicals have not been up to par lately from what I've heard.
