It could be said that Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night is one of the most highly anticipated Kickstarter projects bound for Nintendo platforms. We absolutely loved what we saw of it at E3, and it seems as though development has been progressing quite well. The game was set to launch in March of 2017, but it seems now that fans will have to wait quite a bit longer before getting a chance to play it.
Koji Igarashi recently put out another Kickstarter update where he broke the news that the game has been delayed until sometime in the first half of 2018. The main reason for the delay is that Igarashi did not believe that the game would meet his standards if development continued at the same rate that it currently is, so he pushed it back and added another development team. Here's the video:
Hopefully, the delay turns out to be well worth it. It'd be a real shame if the wait was all for nothing.
What do you think? Are you disappointed by this? What do you think they need the whole extra year for? Drop us a comment in the section below.

Honestly, I'm more concerned for the Wii U port. The Wii U will be almost completely irrelevant by 2018...
I'm sure the Wii U version will be cancelled, with such a delay.
but I feel confident Bloodstained will appear on the NX.
I wonder if IGA will probably try to make an NX port at this point.
Ouch... I hope it come to the NX. I really want to play it!
Well I'm sure this will be out on the iphone 8... sorry, I meant the NX.
Eh, same thing most likely.
That's quite a hefty delay. Really hoping this isn't another Mighty Number 9. Glad Yooka Laylee is looking almost done!
I doubt this game will come to the Wii U, but as some people have already mentioned, NX could be an option. (^_^ )
Hope the game comes with a physical release when it launches.
As previously mentioned I'm kinda glad for the delay because it will probably get an NX port now. However, it's one less game to look forward to next year which is always a bit disappointing, even if there will be plenty of highly anticipated games arriving early in the year. Also, hopefully this eases the work load for the team that is doing Vita port.
@CharlieSmile No its not cancel. He will say on the video
@MarinoKadame He does not have the sdk. Also it cost more money to make another system. Armature Studio is porting on the vita also
Folks the game is not coming the nx. IGA don't have the sdk. 2018 devs still going to making games on the wii u and 3ds. The nx is a new concept. IGA doesn't know what it is. Also its cost more money to port the game on the nx
So it begins
All for nothing links to mighty no. 9. Lol
NOOOOOOOO!!!!! oh fine... my 3ds has super castlevania iv, the vita's got symphony, i would've loved my (upcoming and presumed portable) nx to have this. #MakeVampiresGreatAgain
hahahaha its Mn9 all over again !!!
...just a joke... ( I think)
2018?! hahah.... talk about being not even a thing.
Good riddance to more vaporware!
Wake me up when we get there, that way I can not buy then either
Can't watch the video but I'm sensing the game will be cancelled on Wii U, or it will be released and as the console will be inevitable displaced by the NX, it won't sell well and that would make the perfect excuse not to port it to the NX.
Don't really care about the game but damn, this is indeed quite a big delay. Sure hope Yooka-Laylee won't have a similar delay ... again.
Ouch
I would say the Wii U versions chance is slim and none.
Man....that is a bummer. This is actually my most awaited game of 2017. Yes even more than Zelda of mass effect. 😩
I love me some proper castlevania.
I can wait. It's nice to have something really amazing to look forward to.
I can definitely wait, but that's a LONG wait. I would suggest they release a playable demo to satisfy the fans and keep them hungry for more.
...Though, you know.... the sad reality is that some of us will probably die before the game is released.
Off topic but it seems interplay has filed for bankruptcy and is selling off all their ip's. Better run to the Wii shop and pick up earth worm Jim ect while you still can.
So obviously the Wii U version is dead, cause by 2018, the NX will be the main system and Wii U will easily be long gone. Hopefully they decide to release the game on NX, and make a physical release for it.
@hYdeks I didn't even think about that, even though it's obvious. I mean... I guess it depends on what the Kickstarter page says. If they clearly announced or unlocked a Wii U version, I'd think they're obligated to fulfill that expectation. They can also release it on the NX, but Wii U owners supported the campaign, so they should be taken care of. 2018, though. Sheesh.
@Captain_Gonru Nice change of pace for you grumpy.
@XCWarrior I think 2018 would be iPhone 9.
@edcomics An option for them is to see if people who requested the game for the wiiu, like me, still want the game for the wiiu. Personally, I would prefer the NX version by then.
@therealgamer Even if Bloodstained comes in Janurary 2018, the NX will have been out 9 months.
Really disappointing... But I believe in IGA. Bloodstained will be magnificent!
@Mega_Yarn_Poochy the nx comes out March 2017. Wouldn't that mean January 2017 would happen before the nx?
Remember the wise words:
"A delayed game is eventually good, but a rushed game is forever bad"
as a backer, i guess i should be dissapointed, but i'm not since in my mind, delay = better product... can't wait to play it tho!! ;D
People mad at this mess but Shovel Knight hasn't even finished all the stretch goals yet... Hahaha Kickstarter is a load of bologna.
This whole kickstarter phenom is still weird to me. Not the concept, but this strange trick my brain plays on me expecting the game to be out within a year or so from first learning about it. The reality is, and I feel sorry for the backers, we learn quite a bit about these games well before heavy production is underway. I completely forgot about this game - it seems quite a long time ago since the kickstarter began. For the backers, it's like preordering a game 3-4 years in advance. I wonder if people will be more hesitant about backing games on kickstarter in the future. It's not like backing a band where it takes about 3-4 weeks to record and a month or two mastering/post-production. When you back a game it seems you are in for a 3-5 year gestation period.
@Zach777
because Shovel Knight was a complete game, worth the price of admission
Well at least he's being honest. Better than a 3 month delay, followed by another and another...
I´ll buy this for NX or PC then.
@faint Sorry, meant to say January 2018
Shame. Never played a castlevania game but I'm really looking forward to this. I have no hope for the Wii u version now but I was planning to get it the ps4 anyway.
Wow, thats a HUGE delay! Sucks for those who were eagerly waiting. So...NX release, then.
@MitchVogel Definitely agree there. By the time 2017 runs by, the Wii U is pretty much out the door...unless if Iga somehow shifts gears and announces the Wii U port for the NX instead.
Glad I did not back this.
@MitchVogel As will be the Vita, which is what I intended to play it on
Hahaha, and people said it wouldn't become a second Mighty no9! Another Kickstarter down the drain!
@Henmii or the extra time will go into making it better then Mighty no9? I think it's good when a game gets delayed like this. Sure it sucks that you have to wait, but at least you know the developers are putting real time into making it something good.
Why is everyone assumibg that since it has been delayed the game will be another Mighty No. 9? Shantae Half-Genie Hero was supposed to come out in October 2014 (almost 2 years of delay), but the game looks to be awesoke anyway.
Eck, even Zelda BotW has been delayed simce its 2015 target, but the game will still be a masterpiece.
It wouldn't be a Kickstarter game without delays.
That's the Wii U version definitely cancelled so. That's a massive delay.
The main game I'm concerned about skipping the Wii U is Yooka-Laylee, especially seeing as I backed it and it looks awesome. I think we're safe though, thankfully. But that's down to a unique set of circumstances.
Anyone care that it sounds like he sacked the dev team to bring a new one in? Seems a bit power hungry. Making games is about team work not dictatorship.
Q) What do you think?
A) Well I think, unlike quite a few people in this comment section, that a 2018 release does guarantee that the Wii U version will be cancelled. After all, the Wii U version is being ported in lieu of the PS Vita version; so I feel comfortable in believing this game will still release on the Wii U despite the delay. So long as a PS Vita version is still being planned, the Wii U version would in turn be planned, and I've heard nothing about them consdiering cancelling either version.
Q) Are you disappointed by this?
A) As it is so far the only Wii U game I knew of for a 2017 release that I'm interested in; yes, I am disappointed. Outside of Bloodstained, I'm unaware of any other physical releasing Wii U games for 2017 that capture my interest, so it seems my Wii U purchases of 2017 will come solely in the form of eShop and older purchases.
Q) What do you think they need the whole extra year for?
A) I imagine to develop for each of the versions. To be honest, I expected a delay, though not quite to this significant of an extent.
@bubby444,
You may be right, but I don't have high hopes. And its a H-UGE delay.
As some people already said: A Wii u version is out of the question now. But maybe NX?
I'm guessing it'll move to the NX instead.
I really look forward to the game myself, but "delayed to meet developer goals" is certainly not the same as "canceled". It's not like I don't still have some older Metroidvanias to catch up with or other wishlist entries to expect in the meantime.
@MitchVogel : The unfortunate reality is that the Wii U was barely relevant in 2015.
I think this pretty much rules out any possibility of a Wii U version then (unless the success of Super Mario Run and/or NX cause an explosion in Nintendo's popularity).
People are wigging out, but by then releasing the game on the Nintendo store would likely cover both the WiiU and NX consoles already.
IGA is my all-time favorite game dev, the demo was great and I trust in him and his crew. Dont mind waiting extra for the perfect post-SOTN masterpiece.
Hope the WiiU version happens, I paid for a physical WiiU copy
@MitchVogel I think we can safely say that the Wii U version isn't going to happen. I imagine they will offer codes for the NX version, if that becomes a thing.
@Damo How are you holding up with this news, Damo?
To be honest I never had any hope this one would arrive quickly. I just hope it will be worth the wait, whenever it does happen.
Postpone it to 2020 for all I care. Just communicate with your backers, and make a damn good game.
2018 now has a game I'm most excited for. It's definitely sad that it's being delayed a full year, and it makes me sad that my physical rewards will have to wait that long as well, but my hype for the game is unchanged. Take your time, Iga, make something worth the wait.
@Loui I'm gutted. I need my old-school CV fix, and I need it now!
This is almost certainly a Mighty No 9 sequel.
@CharlieSmile
It's not complete yet; if the blueprints of the game included the stretch goal stuff, and that is not out yet... It is still not complete. Why make all these stretch goals and then not bring them out with your project when you release it?
The point I'm trying to make is Kickstarter doesn't have a the best track record with game developers the way I see it. Too many negative things going on.
Either it's going to be really good or just plain mediocre, maybe it'll have a longer credit screen than Mighty No. 9.
@Zach777 If we're going to be that picky we might as well add every single game with a season pass to the list of games not yet completed until all of the season pass dlc gets released.
I love Iga so much that I can't be mad. With everything going on in 2017 with NX, I'm sure it will go by fast.
@SanderEvers Yeah, I know, but it wasn't funny that way. Xcwarrior knows I'm a kidder, and besides, I had the little winky face to cover my @ss Thanks though.
2018? sigh
Well, here's hoping it leads to a better game.
Will you shill this game like mighty 9 up until it will be universally panned and wait to write a review week or 2 and pretend you have some integrity?
Ouch!
The Wii U might not be relevant anymore in 2018, so I suppose this means a move to NX is likely.
Blast. One less game for 2017.... And for Nintendo gamers, next year is starting to resemble Atacama desert.
Wow. I'm mad the only game really wanted this sooner , but oh well
I've waited longer for a new Castlevania, I surely can wait 1 more year. This won't throw a Mighty despair on me
Ah well, I have a huge backlog anyway. I'll get it whenever it shows up.
I came here specifically to read the comments. This is why I love the Nintendo Life community; the negativity is minimal and we all appreciate the fact we are essentially waiting for an amazing game to be handed to us at optimum quality. (Handed to us for us backers, that is).
It does suck but now I have a reason to get this for "NX" if it gets released for it, which I bet it will. Just needs to be ported which im assuming "NX" will be easier and better equipped to do so. Anyway, see you all in 2018; I'll be whipping bloody faces in Super Castlevania on 3DS...
Insert obligatory Miyamoto quote here.
Mad props to @MitchVogel for beating us to the inevitable Mighty No. 9 joke by potholing the game's entry on NL within the text string "all for nothing", before the comment section even began. Sick burn, bro, sick burn!
Also, we need a Bloodstained (which I refuse to refer to by its unfortunate acronym) trailer poking fun at MN9.
@TerrapinJess
Don't sugar-coat it, I'm here just to provide smart-backside-ery whenever it's needed! And even when it's not.
@rjejr Ah it is only 2016 right now isn't it? Well depending on what part of 2018, it coudl be the iphone8 S, or C, or... DUN DUN DUN - the iphone 8 NX!
(Maria-voice) "I'll trust you for now [Igarashi-sensei]."
I'm a backer on this, but I guess I'm really patient. My reaction to the update e-mail was "Okay, this makes it less likely they'll #$*& up the Wii U port (which I don't think will be canceled so easily since people have already given them so much money for it). It also did seem like a really tight timeline for everything they'd promised, and this does open more possibility for an NX port. So yeah, stuff can of course go wrong, but I'm patient and optimistic at this point.
I've also always said with Bloodstained that even if some disaster occurred and the game never happened at all, I wouldn't regret being there for Igarashi-sensei after all the joy his work has given me. (Same deal with the other Kickstarter I've significantly backed, the new season of MST3K.)
@XCWarrior I give it 6 months before Apple buys Ntneod. Probably sooner, if it's stock drops like a stone after the NX reveal. Apple probably owes the EU enough in taxes to buy Ntineod with that.

http://www.polygon.com/2014/11/21/7259147/disney-nintendo-acquisition
I am joking by the way, unless it happens, then I'm not. Apple needs to do something w/ all of that overseas cash besides pay the US govt taxes.
http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/a63fa440-7023-11e6-9ac1-1055824ca907.html#axzz4JlkkfI4k
@rjejr LOL, yeah I read about Apple's tax evasion. To save costs they got rid of the headphone jack unless you pay extra for the add on. That will cover all those back taxes they must pay.
I don't think Nintendo will be bought anytime soon, but I do think they are going to make a half hearted effort with NX and then just declare themselves a third party software publisher. Which is fine I guess.
@XCWarrior $160 wireless headphones 'nuff said
I'm ok w/ 3rd party, heck saves me money, if Sony gets most of the games.
But If Apple did want to get serious about gaming, maybe make their own Nvidia shield type device, or just a Gamevice to go along w/ those $160 earbuds and a $500 iPad, well Ninnteod would make a nice trophy on their shelf. I wonder how Mario's head would look mounted on a wall?
@Henmii I agree, but there must be a reason for such a big delay. And yes, the Wii u version is most likely cancelled.
@rjejr This guy already has Bowser's on a wall. Best I could do.
http://www.instructables.com/id/Making-a-Bowser-Hunting-Trophy/
FWIW, on topic, I still want to play Bloodstained.... in 2020 when it releases.
@XCWarrior I almost went w/ Bowser, or Gandorf, but I'm still bitter about Mario on Wednesday.
I hope for your sake this game comes out better than M#9. Wouldn't hold my breath for a Wii U version in 2020 though, have your iPhone at the ready. (If I can't be on topic I at least like to be "on joke".)
I didn't get around to backing this game, mainly because the community had already funded it beyond it's stretch goals and so I don't really see the need. Plus I'd prefer a physical copy, and with the Wii U version now possibly in limbo I think I'll wait to see what versions are available when it launches. Still I'm really excited for this game and am sure the extra polish from the delay will be worth it. Most of us already are familiar with waiting for Zelda Breath of the Wild or many other Nintendo games. But with the NX launching in as little as six months and Nintendo expected to have a good launch lineup the time should pass pretty quickly.
...from what? 2017? Okay. Not like I was expecting it to come out any time soon. Heck, I'm pretty sure they set that original date before they met any stretch goals, so obviously it was gonna need an extention...
Ouch…indeed !
Well that's just bleepin' great.
"Ritual of the 9"
Wow. At this rate, I will have completely forgotten about this game before its release.
Whatever he needs to do. As long as I can still get it on the wiiu or for the 2DS.
Already paid $100 for that edition for Wii U...so it best not be cancelled.
With a delay like that I will almost certainly have forgotten about the game and moved on, unless it cones to the NX that is. The Wii U version is likely to be cancelled at this point.
@Utena-mobile
Sounds right.
@MitchVogel
Me too. I found out about this game too late, but absolutely fell in love with it.
On the other hand, some companies have been known to make games for consoles a couple of years after their retirement so...maybe there's hope?
@rjejr The guy's more serious than you think.
Anyways, at least they realized that they'd need to delay things and did it far enough in advance of the original release.
Making video games is difficult and takes a lot of time, yo.
this is totally fine, we all can agree
being a backer and all
In other news: Crowdfunded games continue to disappoint.
@XCWarrior Had a discussion w/ my son in the car today about corporate take-overs. I decided if Apple ever announced an "iGame" device - b/c what else would they call it? - that was either a handheld or home console, then they'd announce their Ntineod purchase w/in 3 days. My son said "iGame" could be the NX which is why Ntineod hasn't revealed it yet, working out the deal w/ Apple. Scary thought.
Been looking forward to playing bloodstained but I guess I will have to wait longer
Developing a good game actually takes time and doesn't happen by itself? I'm surprised.
Absolutely no chance of a Wii U version then. This is yet more evidence as to why its simply stupid to put money on a kickstarter. I mean seriously I could be like "why dont you all give me some money, and I promise I will make Half Life 3 with Gabe Newalls approval in 2017. Oh and by the way if im not able to do any of that I wont be able to give you a refund sorry and all that (Ha ha ha suckers!)". Okay so im exaggerating slightly but there is so much like this happening on kickstarter projects its not even funny.
@Spoony_Tech
Exactly.
@bubby444,
Yeah, you almost get the feeling Igarashi decided to turn the whole game upside-down, because he wasn't happy with it. Or they just used all the money on Sake, and they are in financial trouble now, lol!
