Re: Video: Mario Kart 8 Deluxe's New Trailer Is All About The Battle Mode

TheLobster

MK8 on Wii U sold 8 million copies (an attach rate of 60%, I think the highest selling game on the system). OK, pretty impressive.

How many copies did MK Wii sell, though? 34 million. A far inferior game sold over four times as many copies because, here's the thing, IT WAS ON A SYSTEM PEOPLE OWNED. (Not to shout, just to emphasize.)

THAT'S why Nintendo is rereleasing MK8. Because nobody owned a Wii U. We live in a bubble here where all of us had one. But we are not normal. With the fixed battle mode, MK8 Deluxe will be the best MK game ever made. Nintendo wants to basically launch their new console with that. Who wouldn't?

Re: Nintendo's Share Value Takes a Hit Following Financial Results

TheLobster

@rjejr They surely know in the US and UK judging by everything I've seen of 1-2 Switch. That Milk game, wow. They don't even try to hide it when they show it off. It's a pretty good strategy, actually. Nintendo is learning how to work the memes!

"Anytime, anywhere, with anyone?" D-e-a-d. I'm going to have to wash my hands whenever I touch a Switch, and not because it might have been used on the toilet! I wonder if we'll see a bump in kids named after Luigi in early December?

Nice to see Nintendo let its hair down for once! Heck, maybe Kimishima is right. If they keep this up, maybe they can sell 100 million on hilarity alone!

Re: Nintendo's Share Value Takes a Hit Following Financial Results

TheLobster

@rjejr Hadn't seen it, went to watch it. It's a bit long, but that's definitely how you sell this thing. Obviously an amalgamation of several ads that are all part of a large campaign over there? I hope?

My favorite bit was around 1:20 where the message was clearly, "The Switch and MK8 Deluxe are better than sex." That's a high bar, I guess in a bit less than a month we'll see if it delivers!

Edit: Also don't think Nintendo has tried to outsell sex before so that might be a first for them. I'm sure Sony and Microsoft have gone that route.

Re: Review: Fire Emblem Heroes (Mobile)

TheLobster

I think this game is brilliant. I've been playing almost nonstop since I got it on the 2nd. I haven't spent any money yet though, which may be bad for Nintendo. I just haven't seen a need to. But the game itself is loads of fun. I'd say a 9/10.

Re: Nintendo's Share Value Takes a Hit Following Financial Results

TheLobster

@rjejr Deleted what?

I was all over Gaga's performance. Of course I knew all the songs. But it was very clever. Subtly political while still being a smashing concert. She certainly knows how to send a message. Probably one of the best of the past decade.

Yeah, it was a Zelda commercial. I made my 78yo dad sit through the longer one after the game and the first words out of his mouth were, "That one was better." I went, "Yeah, but I'm sure they didn't have 15mill to blow on a 90 second spot." The only 90 second ad I remember seeing was ghost Spuds MacKenzie and the only thing I got out of that one is that if you are seeing a ghost dog, you don't need another beer.

Re: Feature: Nintendo Switch Countdown - Considering the Joy-Con

TheLobster

Anyone else think the Joy-Con(s?) and HD Rumble (not to mention that it is included in the Pro Controller) is a sign Nintendo is testing out VR plans? HD Rumble is basically advanced haptic feedback and I can think of nothing that would need that sort of functionality better than VR. Invent the tech first for other stuff and get people used to it, then roll out the VR part later? The Switch console itself would probably be quite easy to stick into a headset, too. I'm not particularly interested in that as I wear glasses and I haven't found a VR headset that is comfortable with my very strong prescription. But it's a possibility, yeah? Kimishima has said they are thinking about it.

Re: Nintendo's Share Value Takes a Hit Following Financial Results

TheLobster

@rjejr It certainly is a GREAT commercial for Zelda. I think the ad is good enough that people will want to look up the 90 second one. People certainly love Zelda after all. I know people who haven't owned a Nintendo console in generations who are hyped for BotW. Nintendo may have the winner of the night for all we know!

I hope so. What was it a few years ago with the Seahawks and the Broncos where it was a total blowout and everyone got bored? I don't quite remember.

Re: Nintendo's Share Value Takes a Hit Following Financial Results

TheLobster

@rjejr Not sure I'm with you on the 30 second video, we may have to agree to disagree. Public perception of the Wii U is nil, but people still remember what the Wii looked like (was just in my elderly neighbor's house last week and she's still got hers hooked up, and at least hubby will be watching the game) and what is shown in the ad is decidedly NOT Wii-like. Also people know what a 3DS looks like - that system is actually popular - and the Switch doesn't look like a 3DS either. Nintendo starts the ad out with the logo so people know it is from them and they end with it too in case they forgot in the past 30 seconds. Zelda Millennial starts out with it portable but after he cooks breakfast he very visibly docks it. I think it is extremely clear that in this instance it is a portable that can have TV out. I know Nintendo likes to say it is a console that can be taken portably on the go, but - that is not the message that ad is implying. They say, "Nintendo Switch, March 3rd" in there too along with Zelda:BotW. I think that implies it's a bundle but hey, anybody seeing this by Sunday won't be able to get a pre-order in anyway so what they think on that front doesn't matter. I think the ad is as clear as they can make it in 30 seconds where they are trying to push two concepts (Zelda, Switch is a new console). The reaction I have seen for it is overwhelminly positive even from the usual suspects of Nintendo bashers so they must be doing something right. But we won't know until the fourth quarter of course how it will go down. That I think is the big mistake here. You want to air in the second quarter. What if it's a blowout? People stop watching. Second quarter people get on social media during half time to talk about the best commercials so far and stuff trends heavily. But maybe the game will be close and stuff from the fourth quarter will still be relevant.

Re: Video: Hideo Kojima Can't Resist Having A Go On 1-2-Switch

TheLobster

I like Kojima, and I'm glad to see him having fun with the Switch, even if it is with the Kinda Funny idiots, or shall I say Really Unfunny idiots. Kojima is a brilliant creator and now that he's out from under Konami's thumb he actually might be able to put something on a Nintendo platform. He really seemed to be enjoying himself at any rate.

What is wrong with you people I don't know, but there's no need to be so nasty about an old guy having fun.

Re: Nintendo's Share Value Takes a Hit Following Financial Results

@rjejr Here it is:
" "We heard from U.S. gamers that they were tremendously excited about the proposition [of Switch], and that they couldn't wait to experience the power of a home console portably within their own homes. Not only inside the home and outside, but just moving from room to room." Chavez says Nintendo shared that feedback with the company's counterparts in Japan, culminating in the Super Bowl ad (look for it to air during the game's fourth quarter), where the player carries the experience seamlessly from bed to breakfast to couch."

Re: Nintendo's Share Value Takes a Hit Following Financial Results

TheLobster

@rjejr Saw an article that Nintendo was doing some work on demographic research with the 30 second spot. The extended ad had people of all ages, in all locations, as per usual, but the 30 second one only had a Millennial playing the Switch on TV and on portable in various rooms around his house. Apparently Nintendo got a lot of feedback after the initial reveal that people were excited to be able to take the Switch around the whole house (instead of like the Wii U, which is obviously tethered) and so they are marketing to that. Too bad they didn't show him on the crapper, too, but he WAS eating in the commercial at one point so I guess they'd have to show him washing his hands after and they can't waste precious time on that.

Re: Video: Tiny Cartridge Captures the Delicious Awkwardness of Milking in 1-2-Switch

TheLobster

@rjejr You can't tell hipsters apart from LGBTQ folks because hipsters stole all their fashion from us! Specifically, lesbians. Tell me, what do lesbians wear? Plaid flannel and combat boots or Converse, right? Now, what do hipsters wear? Plaid flannel and... oh s---! But who wore it first? The L of the LGBTQ, that's who. It just wasn't "cool" until the disaffected youth set in.

As for whether or not Nintendo is marketing to LGBTQ people with 1, 2, Switch, I think you may be a bit kooky there. I think they are marketing to the same people that wanted to play Wii Sports myself. That blue ocean again.

Re: Here's How Dragon Quest Heroes II On Switch Shapes Up Against The PS4 Version

TheLobster

In the top picture I really see very little difference aside from particle effects. Is the portal activated in the bottom screenshot? It might be simply down to that. Certainly the 360/PS3 can handle particle effects to a degree and the Switch is more powerful than those consoles.

As for the bottom picture I'm not sure what we're supposed to be looking at because there doesn't seem to be two of the exact same thing but am I to take it it's the windows? Yes there are fewer polygons in the bottom picture but in the portal picture the game didn't seem incapable of rendering circular objects. Are we sure we're looking at the same windows? I really can't tell. There's too much menu garbage/character in the way. But neither look bad (for what we can SEE of them).

At any rate the graphics don't really seem to be that much worse. Yes, it's noticeable, but how noticeable is it going to be on a 6-inch screen at 720p versus your 72-inch 4K television? The consoles are built for different purposes. As long as all the content is there, I'm happy.

Re: State of Mind is a 'Futuristic Thriller' Heading to Nintendo Switch

TheLobster

From the image up above, it sort of reminded me of that Star Wars 1313 game (or whatever the numbers were) that got cancelled way back for some reason. Just that sort of atmosphere I guess.

Lovely looking game and an intriguing story. I will definitely keep this one in mind, in like a year and a half when it will probably release, haha. At least if it releases in Europe before US I can import it!

Re: Video: Take an Extended Look at Switch Exclusive Seasons of Heaven

TheLobster

@ThanosReXXX I really shouldn't judge someone else's writing when I myself have put my own novel through an "analyze your writing and find out what author you most write like" generator and gotten Stephanie Meyer. Ouch.

I agree, it is too soon to say either way if it is vaporware or not. We haven't even seen the Switch presentation for crying out loud! I'll be interested to see if this game is mentioned in it at all.

Re: Video: Take an Extended Look at Switch Exclusive Seasons of Heaven

TheLobster

@ThanosReXXX

Thanks for the French excerpt. It's not terrible. I mean I'm intrigued and would read more, I suppose, but as far as writing goes it's a tad on the infantile side. I could (and have) done better. Mostly in English, of course!

It did make me interested in the game. I'm actually getting Le Petit Prince vibes from what I read which is promising. Completely different kind of story, of course, but maybe with that sort of style of telling. That would be excellent indeed.

Of course if it falls through, and at this point that seems likely, it would not be a great loss either.
