The Nintendo Switch has taken some stick from the gaming press since last week's announcement over elements of its online functionality, accessories and price, but one complaint that is perhaps without merit is that the system isn't small enough to fit in your pocket - unless of course you're MC Hammer, or a clown.
We'd hope that most people out there are aware that a tablet-style device doesn't belong in your pocket - just as you wouldn't expect an iPad or iPad Mini to slip effortlessly into your trousers when you leave the house.
Like any other company which is asking for money in exchange for goods or services, Nintendo deserves scrutiny when it comes to business decisions, but this really isn't something that's worth grumbling about. If you disagree, then be sure to let us know by posting a comment.

Damo... the thumbnail... stop.
@AlexOlney ...Hammer time?
Can't touch this! well not until 3 March
I am sure I have some parachute pants or some JNCOs somewhere...
Although, I have been looking heavily at using the premium cases as a small purse. As I know they are large enough to hold my phone, keys and wallet. Seriously though, just toss it in a bag. Most men I know use messenger bags and I alternate between a messenger bag, bookbag and the Handbag of Holding depending on my day.
i was thinking that in the future, a switch xl might come out, but maybe they might think smaller. a foldable switch mini maybe?
Bet ya I can. The real question is should you.
People walk around with phones half hanging out of their back pocket, why can't we do it with the Switch?
lol i first thought that was Steve Urkel in the thumbnail
Yeah I never understood that criticism from some people. I have the small 3ds and it always goes in my bag
@Jamotello Well Nintendo has got a track record of making their portables smaller. Gameboy Pocket, Gameboy SP & Micro, DS Lite and more.
I don't really have a problem with the Switch's size, the screen is perfect for me. If anything I'd want it a little thicker so it'd have more battery room.
I've carried a 7" tablet around with me the past 4 years one way or another - cargo shorts in the summer, inside denim jacket pocket in the spring and fall, winter coat pocket in the winter. This is a little bigger b/c of the removable Joycon, but remove those and stick them in another pocket and this should fit most places.
I have concerns about Switch, but size isn't one of them. How many iPads has Apple sold? Over 300 million. I think Nintendo could live with 300 million Switch sales.
Is not removing the joycons and putting the tablet in one pocket and the joycons in another pocket a legit workaround?
What's the last portable console people could even put in their jacket pockets? DS? DSi? First 3DS at latest? I'm specifically talking jackets and such; can't imagine it being remotely comfortable to carry even a Gameboy Advance or a smartphone in a trouser pocket.
Gaming hardware industry needs to go nano ASAP to survive - gamers seem to demand PS4 Pro level and 10 hour battery game machines with big enough screens but thin and compact enough that you can bookmark a comic book with them. :V
I like having big pockets on my trousers and have a couple of pairs with particularly big pockets... can easily get 1 litre bottles in them, and even 2 litre bottles go most of the way in... so the Switch shouldn't be too hard... I might even try the Wii U gamepad tonight out of curiosity, as that's bigger than the Switch.
Yeah, handhelds really haven't been a good fit for your pocket in a long time, for me at least. It's not ideal, for any truly "portable" system, but it is totally par for the course these days so I'm fine with it.
I can fit a 3DS XL or a 7" tablet in my jeans pockets. I think if you take the Joycons off you could easily fit it all in your pockets. But really I'll just be keeping it in a protective case in my messenger bag.
I got 99 problems but a switch ain't one! 😂
And this is why the Nintendo Switch will not replace the 3DS.
No worries, will just wait for the official Nintendo branded trousers with pockets large enough to accommodate the Switch; only £89.99, pre-order today!
@DanteSolablood yeah and the batteries can't be augmented externally like an iphone battery case since it won't fit in the cradle anymore. i am guessing warranty voiding aftermarket battery upgrades will be incoming soon enough.
Another groundbreaking discovery by Kotaku.
Judging by a lot of the complaints in the comments section over the last few days I would imagine most people round here would be able to fit it in their handbags........
My New Nintendo 3DS XL fits in my jacket pocket with ease, and without the joy-cons, it looks a similar size, so I reckon I could do the same..... But I wouldn't want to anyway.
I already carry a man-purse around... a gender-neutral one, don't get me wrong. Still, I already have my 3DS and my PSP Go with me all the time, so size won't be an issue.
I guess.
Being able to stick a 3DS in my pocket makes things convenient for me. The Switch's size makes it much less desirable for me as a portable.
That's it! Preorder cancelled. Nintendo you have broken me!
I always carry a backpack or a purse with me, so I don't have problems with size. Stuff in the pockets is prone to pickpocketers, unfortunately.
I will bring Switch with small bag.
@dew12333
Oh...I have it too. (Hand bag)
I don't mind to bring it out despite of Girlie hand bag.
But don't worry. I usually put my 3DS XL inside my Blue back pack. And my 3DS XL inside Hand bag.
@Luna_110
Prepare some Martial Arts to prevent burglary. Wataaa...!! XD
@dew12333 Ha ha that's quality. I quiet agree!
i see Switch as a tablet, not a phone or 3ds type device.
I could fit an 8" tablet in my pocket just fine. That should be no problem for me. Although a carrying case will still be ideal for it.
Just take the joy-cons off, the tablet part should easily be able to slip into a pocket.
Of course that does beg the question of where to keep the joy-cons, but y'know.
Well that's that picture showing then?!
lol but honestly I'll be putting it in a bag (inside a case) if I ever take it out of the house. To be honest I don't even put my 3DS in my pocket anymore. Wallet, phone, keys...it just doesn't work.
@Spoony_Tech the question isnt who's going to let me... It's who's going to stop me
I mean, if you remove the Joy Cons, the Switch is only slightly larger than a 3DS XL.
Put the Joy Cons in the other pocket then.
This is bs
People shouldn't stuff consoles in their pockets to begin with.
Step to the rhythm of a sho-nuff winner! 2 Legit - I Switch.
Side note - my Switch will be dangling around my neck on a chain just like Flavor Flav's clock. It will look so cool when I am on business trips. People will know they can come by my seat on the airplane and milk some cows.
My back pockets go down to my knees, so I could probably fit it in my back pocket, if I wanted to. Not that I would. It would be slamming against my leg as I walked. I stick to softer and less fragile things for my back pockets.
It's size is what people are grumbling about? Really? I'm sure if you removed both Joy-con, it'd fit in your pocket then. Just put them in your other pocket or something.
@Damo Thumbnail is hilarious!
@Jamotello A foldable Switch? Maybe with two screens, what if they could also put 3D on the upper screen. =O
This is ridiculous. Nintendo already came out and said this is a home console that can easily be transported. They did not say it's both a mobile & home system.
I use a Gaems G155 with my Xbox One. It's just as portable as a Switch.
For sure would have fit in my Jnco pants plus there would still room under the legs for a small family to live.......the 90's.....what a glorious time. Too bad they were destroyed at concerts....now where will my switch go
@DeathUriel i'd buy it.
...shame on you guys, Switch is a home console, it's only portable so you can go to the bathroom and keep playing ...
..I see ten best ways to carry your Switch incoming...
#1
Just put in a case and carry it. Its not like a mtg fat pack will fit in a pocket. This is a home console with handheld/travel capabilities. Unless you want to break the screen I wouldn't suggest placing it in your pocket unless you are sporting Jnco or Tripp pants.
I think most winter coats and jackets can pocket it fine. Pants pockets no, but even 3DS XL wasn't particularly pants pocketable without big cargo pants. It's still far more portable than a gaming laptop which is considered mobile enough.
@Equinox Vita wasn't really pocketable. That was one of its downfalls. It's just a little too long, a little too thick, and the protroding thumbsticks weren't big enough to feel like real thumbsticks and weren't small enough to actually make it pocketable. It was a roundtable of compromises and it's sales reflected that. I think even Sony acknowledged that it was "portable, not pocketable" and was suitable for transport in a bag. I'd rather have a big screen and full size sticks on a "portable, not pocketable" console than the Vita's idea of "portable, not pocketable" that's still scaled down just enough to compromise the experience without being fully pocketable. I love the Vita's hardware (not it's library) but at no point did I think to myself "I'm SO glad this thing has compromised tiny, mushy sticks with awful deadzones and a screen barely bigger than 3DS since I can't fit it in my pocket anyway!"
AKA the Switch is not a handheld. Pretty obvious really.
@Bunkerneath Don't want this! Not for another year.
Mark this down as reason #52 why Switch will not succeed as a portable console. It's simply too unwieldy for everyday use outside of the home. Too many components involved as well.
Oh yeah and also not enough VALUE.
Those are quite large backpockets for half-fitting the Switch...
Is that you, Alex?
Even in that picture, if he'd taken the joycons off, it would barely be sticking out at all. Though I don't understand people who put bulky things in their back pockets anyway.
But yeah, with the joycons off, it's roughly the size of a 3DSXL or a thicker iPad Mini. I've already tested it out with a cardboard model and it can fit reasonably well in most of the pants I wear regularly.
I always have a backpack of some kind so I'm not too worried.
You can't fit an iPad into your pocket either Doesn't make it not portable.
@gatorboi352
If you bring mini bag or release the Joy Cons, it will be easier to bring. Just same like bring Ipad on the go. Don't be lazy. Use some tricks to handle that simple problem.
Not to say that the Switch will suddenly and magically become a pocketable device, but I wonder how the Switch would fit in a pocket once the two JoyCons are detached.
I have seen pictures and it appears the Switch tablet itself, without the two JoyCons attached, is slightly larger than the New 3DS XL.
If I can pocket a 3ds xl, a vita and a kindle, I will be able to pocket a switch.
@westman98
I found from another website about Switch console size by roughly. It said, the size was 17 x 10.1 cm. With two Joy Cons attached, it will be 24.3 x 10.1 cm.
@Ryu_Niiyama haha. JNCO jeans are totally da bomb dawg. Pair them with some tight Lugz and an Insane Clown Posse t-shirt and you'll be the most popular kid in alternative school.
I can't believe anyone would actually care about this. I can't comfortably fit my 3DS XL in my pocket, or an iPhone 7+, and I definitely can't fit my original Game Boy in my pocket, so I think I'll be okay carrying Switch some other way.
@Anti-Matter
The New 3DS XL is 16 cm X 9.35 cm when folded, so it appears the Switch is indeed only slightly larger than a folded New 3DS XL when the JoyCons are detached. The Switch is thinner than a folded 3DS XL as well.
@BAN Hilariously enough I wasn't allowed to wear them as a teenager (I was in high school from 99-03). My mom thought I would fall in with the wrong crowd. So when JNCO came back I bought a pair as a "take that!" to my mom, and I've always wanted them. I am sure I still have a Nirvana or A Perfect Circle shirt around here somewhere.
@Anti-Matter yeah no thanks, not toting around a bag to carry my switch nonsense in public places.
I'm also 33 and work full time, rarely travel and only ever game at home, at night, in my enclosed game room once the wife and kid go to bed. Switch is not for me, basically. Not at this price and lack of value.
That image reminds me of 'The Real McCoy' (sketch show from the Ninties, that took the p&ss out of Mchammer
@Ryu_Niiyama haha what a great time to be alive, the late 90's/early 00's were. I was in high school from '98-'02 so I know exactly what you're talking about. I no longer have my A Perfect Circle t-shirt but I definitely still have the CD. Although I can honestly say, thankfully, that I never felt the urge to wear JNCO's. They looked legitimately cumbersome and hazardous for the wearer. If you can trip on your own pants, or you can literally fit a two-liter bottle of soda in your pocket, you bought the wrong pants.
I call it a semi-portable.
IT'S DANGEROUS TO GO ALONE!
TAKE THIS.
@BAN Oh good, so you may understand why I just spent 250 USD to see APC in concert in a few months, lol! No, you are right about the hazards of JNCO. I remember a few of my buddies face planting a number of times. I bought a pair of their shorts anyway; they still have the big pockets but I won't trip and break my glasses...or lose my prosthetic eye for that matter...
@SH007ME That fanny pack still looks too small. Two words: messenger bag.
@Ryu_Niiyama Oh nice, that'd be a cool concert to go to. I forgot they got back together. I haven't listened to them in a long time but Mer de Noms is one of my favorite albums from that era. I probably spent like 50% of my free time listening to that and White Pony (Deftones) between 2000 and 2002.
Oh, and good thinking on the shorts lol. I've heard prosthetic eyes are expensive.
Well, I'm a woman, so it's socially acceptable for me to carry a purse... which is how I have carried around my Samsung Galaxy Tab in the past.
My real life nickname is MC, though, so believe me I've heard tons of "MC Hammer" jokes in my life. Perhaps I should just go with it for the Switch?
@BAN LOL Very Expensive. Even with my insurance I just finished paying 3grand for my latest one. However, they last until you either lose them (heh I've lost two) or there are massive changes to your eye socket (puberty sucked for that reason in addition to the normal suckage like acne.) and you just have to get them polished yearly. The cool thing is my doctor makes custom ones for 300 USD up front so I am amassing a small collection. I have a smiley face and Kakashi's sharingan. I think of them as removable tattoos. Likely more info than you wanted to know right? Sorry.
Also, Yes to Mer de Noms! I am not much a Tool fan but I still keep all of APC's albums in constant rotation.
@TheLobster You could bring parachute pants back! Don't forget the gold glasses!
@Ryu_Niiyama ..good idea, it'll give books a use again, lol...
there we go. scratch that little pretty screen up.
Eh. Not a big issue just buy a jacket with big secret pockets. Or unless you're one of the few who got one of the special zelda buns
I challenge your hammer pants with J'nco jeans!
@Gerbwmu
That sounds like a story worth hearing. J'nco jeans are ridiculousy huge and expensive, but comfy and you could fit anything in those pockets.
Some people need to understand the difference between a "portable" gaming device and a "pocketable" gaming device.
The Switch (as well as the DSi XL, 3DS XL, New 3DS XL, and 2DS) fits in the former category, and not the latter unless your pants have really, really big pockets (or if you store the Switch and the JoyCons in separate pockets).
@Ryu_Niiyama Not surprised they're expensive. That's the way of the medical industry at large, whether it's justified or not, and prosthetics are no different. It's basically one big government-sanctioned monopoly, but I guess that's a conversation for another time and place.
Yeah I don't listen to Tool anymore but I was really into them back in the day. To be honest, I kind of stopped listening to that type of music because it has a way of depressing my mood.
I put 4 3DS(XL)s in my pockets right now. I roughly measured that and think I could remove 2 3DS(XL)s from my pockets and put one Switch in instead (controller and the tablet need to be separated).
However, without StreetPass, it seems meaningless to put Switch in the pocket. StreetPass is great as I knew many friends through StreetPass meeting, and also saw hundreds or thousands of players took 3DS to game / anime conference.
Perhaps cargo shorts will fit, but why would you guys even want it in your pockets anyway? Mine is either staying in its dock, or traveling in my Sheika Slate carry case.
Can't believe someone would even imagine you could...
Oh no! It can't fit in my pocket?! Guess I'll have to cancel my pre-order then!
Seriously? Does anybody have an iPad? You know you can't fit THOSE in your pants so why would you think a console could (a console that's not a 3DS or Vita, that is)?
I think the portability will have a lot more to do with bringing it to local multiplayer setups than gaming on the go. This isn't a bad thing; it means 3DS will still have a role as the "portable" device. For now at least, the two will be distinct enough to avoid the spectre of crossbuy that annoyed us during the Wii U era.
@gatorboi352 If the Switch isn't for you anyway then why do you've got to complain beneath every post on this site that the Switch will fail and is a horrible system? Can't you imagine that, even though it might not be a console you would want, other people might like it?
Some of your complains certainly are well founded and I agree that there are some concerns regarding the system, but I think there might be things to come and that it's wrong to totally dismiss the console at this early stage.
@Tiefseemiez good lord i swear i answer this at least once a week.
Because I'm a Nintendo fan since I had memories as a kid. I've purchased every Nintendo console day one except for a few. I, like many others around here and over the world, are simply growing tired of this new Nintendo. We want Nintendo to be great again.
Also, this is a discussion forum. For ALL view points. If you're looking for an echo chamber of Nintendo sunshine pumping, head over to GoNintendo or something.
@gatorboi352 Make Nintendo great again!?!
@Calllack LOL no relation to Trump I swear!
Seriously though what happened to my favorite gaming company?
@gatorboi352 I didn't criticise you expressing your opinion. I just recognised that there is a (usually pretty cynical) remark of you beneath nearly every post regarding the Switch and I simply think that it is a bit early for being that negative. There still is a lot information missing and while the launch lineup certainly isn't amazing this doesn't automatically mean there won't be any good games on the Switch.
The other reason I criticised you is that your opinions are usually expressed in a very generalising way.
I must admit that I only started recently to get interested in gaming or Nintendo specifically (since ~4 years). Even though I played some Nintendo games as a kid (I'm 26 now), I didn't have that much of a emotional connection to the company as I have now (which is pretty ridiculous I have to admit ^^).
So I got to ask: What ideals/features/... exactly are you missing in today's Nintendo?
@Tiefseemiez "and I simply think that it is a bit early for being that negative." what is there to feel positive about, exactly?
"There still is a lot information missing" That's part of the problem. Switch launches in just over a month.
"So I got to ask: What ideals/features/... exactly are you missing in today's Nintendo?"
Lack of games and value for what they're asking us to invest.
@gatorboi352
Did other consoles launch with such a big library?
"What is there to feel positive about?"
I feel positive about the whole concept of a home console to take on the go. Since I too have a job this is something that will be really useful since I can play on the train. During the last years I played my 3DS so much more than my Wii U, allthough I loved a lot of Wii U games but I hardly took the time to sit down at home for it apart from gaming-evenings with friends. When travelling my boyfriend and me certainly will enjoy the possibility of local multiplayer on the Switch a lot. The presentation had a couple of awkward moments and a couple of unspectacular ones (or lets say: a lot of them), but still I was faszinated by HD-rumble as a thing. Also there were some really interesting and innovative games presented. I especially love the concepts of Arms and Snipperclips, but also kind of like the idea behind 1...2...Switch!, even though we'll have to wait and see how much content there'll be. The teasers for Shin Megami Tensei and Fire Emblem Warriors also caught my eye though they won't be released that soon. But I expect a couple of big surprise reveals during E3 anyway. The new Breath of the Wild trailer also looked amazing, aswell as Mario Odyssey. I like the modular nature of the console and the many control options. I like Splatoon 2 and most of the third party anouncements looked appealing to me aswell.
I understand the complaints about the pricing, but I do not feel ripped off, since I can see that there is a lot of complex tech involved in the console and it looks well manufactured. Since they had trouble with being accused of having manufactured the Wii U using child labour they most likely wanted to be sure this time not to get involved in dirty business like that. Which might also make the console more expensive. Okay, this might be a bit of a stretch. But I am willing to pay money for complex technology.
I crammed an Atari Lynx in my pocket (which is a lot bulkier than a Switch tablet) so sure you could do it:
