During yesterday's Nintendo Switch UK Premiere in London we got the opportunity to not only sample some of the forthcoming games for the new console, but also to lovingly fondle the Switch itself and some of its accessories.
The tiny Joy-Cons are adorable but don't feel too small in use; time will tell if they're up to the task of prolonged play sessions. The Pro Controller is super-comfortable and - if you ask us - a big step forward from the already-excellent Wii U variant. The fully-assembled Joy-Con pad is also surprisingly pleasant to hold.
What do you make of the look of the Nintendo Switch? Do you prefer the grey Joy-Cons or the red and blue versions? Share your thoughts with a comment below.

I want White Switch, White docker, Neon Blue Joy con, White Joy Con grip.
I don't want Black. Too common.
If anyone's coming to the afternoon event at apollo. Go for the zelda stamp first
I'm kind of disappointed the Switch won't have Wii U Pro Controller support... did they give a reason for that? The new one is kind of pricey. Not even complaining, just want to know why they'd do that.
This game was great.

The top image - does that mean that's what we are getting for the "blue" and "red" (in this case more like orange) versions of the Switch? I think I rather stick with the common black. It's common boring color, but unless we get truly different color variations of the Switch (and I'm sure we will and most will be probably Japan-only) I'll stick with that. After all it's about the games, not the colors (though one of the reasons I didn't buy Wii U was the obvious lack of memory in the white version).
@Anti-Matter That would be perfect! I'm not a fan of neon lights and colors, but your idea sounds too good to resist haha
@PotatoTheGreat I saw the price being 60 bucks for one. If that's true then it's indeeed pricey and I'll probably buy the pro controller much later when I will feel it's 100% needed for better playing. Really bad news for those who already have a Wii U Pro controller though
Neeeeeeeeeed!
Looks amazing
I really like the Neon colours,gives the device a really unique look.I'm hoping that's the one I'll get but the store I'm getting it from can't confirm yet what they'll be supplied.
I've preordered at three different places just to make sure I actually get one. I'll cancel two of them before launch. I'm such a dork.
Is the Pro controller the one that kind of looks like a GB Micro? Because it kind of looks ugly. I wanted the red & blue switch but then only had the grey one on Best Buy Canada's website.
@PotatoTheGreat
the reason is money - as always
Lol, the switch is almost the size of a gameboy micro
@Pokefanmum82 The GB is only a comparison.
And when did you order? Cause I ordered on best buy canada yesterday, at 22:30 and I got a color model.
It's a beautiful console, can't wait to hold it myself... I just wish there were more games. Not even Snipperclip is launch, is it?
So just Zelda, and maybe Bomberman for me. I was going to get a Pro Controller, but for £65 I might hold off for a while. It's actually going to be really expensive getting all this stuff!
Wish they'd make some purple/indigo Joy-Cons or a purple/indigo Switch. For now I'll go for the grey/black ones.
I found something cool! Pikmin World!!!
Also Ass Creed Egypt and Rabbids Invasion!
http://www.intertoys.nl/nintendo-switch-pikmin-world?previousSearchTerm=switch
NEED.
Keeping the grey for th kids and ordered a red and blue set for me and my partner. Hopefully enough people buy coloured controls and they release more varieties! We really want green and orange 😛
Yesterday was still too little info. Unanswered questions:
How much is the online service pa?
Was the game rentals just a typo?
Where is the rest if the launch lineup, as in downloadable software?
Virtual Console?
GameCube games? (Blue Storm and Monkey Ball would be welcome at launch)
Apps?
Mobile games? Damn thing has a touchscreen.
Account system? Downloads system tied?
Will WiiU software carry over?
Will 3DS continue?
There are always decals you can get for the system and joy cons if you want other colors.
"The tiny Joy-Cons are adorable but don't feel too small in use"
Nintendolife is literally the only outlet I've read on Switch that has not said the JoyCons are too small. They're too small. Held horizontally they simply become impractical.
I need that Pro Controller.
The neon controllers would be fine separately, but alternating like that is just yuck. I'll stick to grey, thank you very much. Also, why didn't they make a Zelda edition with gold controllers?
@Anti-Matter now I want that too!
I love the blue and red! Though to be honest if I had the option to have just blue (outside of buying a super expensive extra set) I would have gone for that without question.
@RadioHedgeFund I'm actually really glad they focussed on the new games and didn't fall back on their back catalogue of former-glory as usual. They've become known as a company that relies on nostalgia recently, this felt like they were shaking that and becoming about innovation again. I hope that VC info will come soon, but for me this needed to be about what is coming next not what has already been.
The 3DS they have already said will continue alongside the Switch and there are several big titles out for it in 2017. Even a first party IP in Ever Oasis. What happens after those I don't know and imagine will largely depend on the sales of both so cannot be stated now.
I'd like to know more details about online and account systems too but I can see why they didn't cover it here. Hopefully it's soon to follow.
@RadioHedgeFund
Also, integration between Switch and smartphone. I have figure it out from Parental Control apps from Google Apps Store for Switch. Looks like I can control Switch by smartphone or control my smartphone by Switch.
Oh, also about Sleeping Quality control feature. I remembered when I heard about rumour of NX. They said NX / Switch can detect the player condition, somewhat like Baymax from Big Hero 6. Is that feature really implemented on Switch ?
Looks great. Can't wait to get my hands on it on release day.
@gatorboi352
If Joy Con too big, it wouldn't fit for playing ARMS. Joy Con size maybe a bit small but looks comfort.
@OzHuski
Huh ? XD
Give your kids Neon color. They will get bored by Grey color. XD
@PotatoTheGreat The new one has motion/gyro controls, HD Rumble and NFC scanner functionality built in. I guess games for Switch are being built with those feature in mind no matter what controller configuration you're using so the WiiU one won't work.
The price is too high though. I was set on getting one and a spare dock until I saw the prices.
@Moon
I wonder if Wii U Pro controller can work on Switch.
@Ogbert would it have killed them to send out a press release?
Gah, still can't get a clear look at the cartridge slot and whatever else runs along the top of the console.
I quite like the blue colour and the red is growing on me but i'm sure more colours will come, i hope by christmas this year as that's when i plan on getting a Switch, i'd love purple ones !
imgurl
@Anti-Matter I think I heard that they're not compatible... but don't quote me on that.
@gatorboi352 Have you tried them out?
@Ogbert Yeah, it makes sense. Still a shame though, I don't care about the new features at all. Oh well.
@gatorboi352 Really? I've watched a ton of hands-on videos and they've all said the joy-cons are surprisingly comfortable.
How does the pro charge? With a USB or separate charger?
I'm staggered people can look at the color variants and opt for the grey over the neon. The neons are gorge-diddly-orgeous.
@Moon the joy con with the grip felt better than a pro controller
uploading images
The picture quality even at 720p (tablet) looked sharp and great.
The weight feels good too
@A01 They are so divisive - they are beautiful!
Preordered the red and blue joycon model. Probably won't get a pro controller at launch, but maybe shortly after depending on how the joycon grip controller feels. At $30 that's way less scary of a gamble.
Im surprised atball the hate the red and blue Joy con bundle is getting. Its perfectly Nintendo. Pre ordered mine with no regrets. Grey and black is way overused in todays console market.
It's a shame Nintendo didn't go with the colours from the fan mock-ups that used the GameCube and SNES themes.
Man, those joycon's look so small when used horizontally. I hope they will be comfortable.
@flowerlark Yup, I'll be putting a skin on mine as well. Seems best to stick with black/grey.
Gonna go for the gray. I like the look of the multi-color JoyCons, but I'd feel too conspicuous if I ever used them in public. They make it look a little too much like a kid's toy for my taste.
@RadioHedgeFund no but they had certain things they wanted to focus on and certain things they didn't want to bog down the presentation with. Right now they probably want the message out there to be the cool things the tech can do, the cool games coming to it. The things that will sell most people in the console.
All the info will come soon.
@PotatoTheGreat I'm glad it has the features but I just can't justify that price on top of the system and a couple of games (which are also really pricey atm). Hopefully once the launch buzz is over it'll drop in price.
@r1chard Give it time. After the pricecut it will be a good reason to sell new consoles at the full uncut price.
My biggest worry is what I will do with the HUGE box of GC/Wii stuff I've been using so far. I mean, the GC pads already pull double duty as PC gamepads but all those WiiMotes?
I think my wife will kill me if I mention we'll have to find space for an all-new army of gamepads.
@KirbyTheVampire
Don't worry for kiddie looking. My 3DS XL has custom skins made of Asturo paper and some pictures that drawn by myself with CorelDraw + Corel PhotoPaint X5. Mine looks so cute and i'm confident to bring and show off to public. Just ignore them if they are looking at you with weird impression, they just never saw such a things like that.
Looks very nice. Just need a price drop, better software and answers to all the outstanding questions and I'll be in line for a purchase.
@Anti-Matter white Switch would be gorgeous, and clear buttons.
@UK-Nintendo I was at the event this morning too and agree that snipperclips was a great surprise. Very fun and clever game
The Joy-Cons looks dope and alot more packed into that controller than people was thinking a beef up Wii remote of sorts.
@Vegaphil definitely clever. A game definitely to get for me
So pretty.... <3
Seriously though, the system looks slick. I love the red and blue Joy-Cons (two of my favorite colors!). Since I'll be waiting a bit to get one, though, I'm unsure whether to get a system with those or with an inevitable custom design in the future.
The system looks lovely, and not uncomfortable at all. If what they say about the joy con grip is true, then I won't need a Pro controller in the first time.
I'll try to get the grey system - the red and blue system is too bright for me.
@UK-Nintendo
I wish I had a Switch lanyard, you lucky b@$*@rd you.
i want gamecube purple color joycons . . or even a purple dock
@Grawlog
image upload no compression
@gcunit
Ya know, I wanted grey at first, but after seeing these photos I would really really like the neon colors.
Solution = buy one of each
@iGen lol. I got 3 back with me. I should do a giveaway
@JaxonH that's my plan. Have 2 pairs of joy cons and give up getting the pro controller
@AxxLex
You're on to something!!!
@rjejr go read AxxLexx post #23 He found Pikmin for Switch!!! And Assassins Creed, which should help sooth all those panting for western AAA to play. Can we say Pikmin World confirmed???
@NESlover85
They do look small horizontally (of course I'll reserve final judgement until after I try) but held like a Wiimote in each hand they look perfect. I don't think I'll ever use horizontally but you never know. Could take to work and play with a friend, controller for each of us. I'm sure it'll do in a pinch.
@UK-Nintendo
Precisely. They sell a Joycon charging dock that actually charges 4 Joycons. The best solution is just to swap Joycons if the batteries run out.
One grey Switch, one Red/Blue Switch. I'm also getting the charging grip just in case, I doubt I'll use it because I think having a Joycon in each hand is a much better way to play.
@cheonsacz Doesn't matter if color variants are Japan only! The Switch is region-free! We gotta get used to this. Personally I want both blue Joy-cons but the second blue is so expensive right now that I am not going to bother for several months at least.
@PotatoTheGreat to start fresh, Wii U allowed you to use Wii accessories and had a bunch of its own, it was almost laughable how many accessories you can have because it complicates things and complicates describing it to people. also, saying no past generation controller doesnt work on this one makes it feel new and beyond the past, it makes it clear this is the new one they want and not an upgrade.
@KidRad your right about the dpad for street fighter 2 but personally for me I stay away from Nintendo with fighting games as I buy them titles from PlayStation. I played a good bit of ultra street fighter 2 today and it was played with a pro controller and that's the only way to go really. I really couldn't find that much of a difference from a game I bought for my PlayStation 3 which is the sf2 hd remix nearly 10 years ago.
@Grawlog
Ya I had been wondering the same thing myself. Idk though, I'm buying an extra set of Joycons, and I can just use those as backup (put 2 on the charge dock I'm buying which seats 4 Joycons, and swap with the other 2). That's how I do it for all my other controllers and systems, and I tend to prefer it because I never have to put a charging cable in while I play
Maybe something to consider? Obviously it would be cheaper to just buy a charge grip but if you are planning to buy extra Joycons anyways.... not to mention they might prove useful for local multiplayer with games like Arms
@TheLobster but the shipping cost of ordering things from Japan to where I live would be too expensive
Looks like a very sexy console I like the fact that they have gone with mainly grey and not down the black coloured route that seems to be more and more the norm these days. Not really fond of the neon coloured Joy-Cons though. They don't seem to blend in very well with the rest of the console. I'll be going with the grey ones.
@GuruOfGreatness
I thought the same thing myself but I don't know, more I look at the neon colored ones in these pictures the more I'm strangely attracted to it. My first reaction was that it looked tacky and how could they even consider releasing such a color combination. And yet somehow that opinion has done a complete 180 over the last 24 hours. It's rare that I change my mind about something like that.
But the gray definitely looks classy
@UK-Nintendo
You should! I want one!
@JaxonH He also found SSB and a couple of others. And Pikmin World had a March 24th date. Now that's really intriguing. I always wanted a Pikmin world, kind of like an Animal Crossing game w/ Pikmin, no astronauts, just self sufficient Pikmin in a life simulator. Or an MMO like Warcraft. How adorable would a Pikmin MMO be?
It' just the beginning, we ain't seen nothing yet. But I'm going to go play FFXV now, the carnival is coming in 10 days to Altissia and I'm only up to Lestallum. I'm buying the season pass b/c carnival, and I'm an FF fanboy. We all have our weaknesses.
@KidRad
They actually confirmed Blazblue is coming to Switch. And Ultra Street Fighter II. Smash Bros has been sighted on retailers listings. And Arms but that's more like a motion Tekken than a traditional 2D Fighter. Maybe we'll see others but, that's a decent start right out the gate at least.
@rjejr
Oh man, I need to get back to Final Fantasy XV. Ever since I got my gaming PC though I've been playing all sorts of 6th and 7th gen classics, and now with the Xbox One Controller, Chatpad and Wireless dongle and STEAM Companion which lets it function as a mouse, I can navigate my entire PC, internet and games with this controller. Run searches, log in, everything. And for STEAM games that are Keyboard and Mouse only, the STEAM controller is brilliant. Superior to a normal controller even. The precision of a mouse without the hassle of a keyboard. Been playing Dragon Age Origins and Dragon Age 2 with it, even Inquisition for a 2nd play through, and it's just incredible.
Bought Final Fantasy 3, 4, 4 After Years, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, X/X-2, Type 0 HD, XIII, XIII-2 and Lightning Returns. Just wish XV was on PC but I wouldn't start over.
edit
Oh and I got the Season Pass also. I, like you, am a Final Fantasy fanboy. Though probably not to the same extent.
The neon colours are cool but the OCD in me wishes they hadn't mixed them.
Any confirmation on whether the ZL and ZR triggers on the Joy-Cons or Pro Controller are analogue or digital? It's hard to find anyone confirming that right now, I've only seen one blog so far claim the Joy-Con triggers are analogue. I think we heard during the Treehouse stream that they're analogue, but I'm not 100% certain. This will determine whether we'll see GCN VC any time soon.
I heard digital. How about a GCN MINI?
I really dont wanna have to buy a second controller set just so i can have matching neon colors
All white system except keep the black bezel would be great. I ordered all grey, but like the colored one better. I actually like the mixed colors gives my eyes twice the pleasure, and those colors go great together.
@JaxonH yes, wii mote style looks very comfortable.
The Switch is going to end up making the Wii U look like a Grand Slam.
@freaksloan
Yes because clearly the lower price, sexier aesthetic, better technology, better controller, higher value as a hybrid and larger year one 1st party lineup not restricted by region locking is a dead giveaway
ill be getting the blue and red myself, unless they come with green
Anyone else super jealous of that guy with the fabulous condition Gameboy Micro Famicom Edition? I scoured the internet for one in good condition and never seemed to have any luck.
@RadioHedgeFund I dont think Wii U software will carry over. I think they want the Switch to have nothing to do with its past systems except for absorbing their DNA.
Can someone explain how, as I've seen stated here a few times, it's the colored joy con that 'scream nintendo' when the NES, SNES, and N64 all had grey controllers? The only console that has had wacky-colored controllers is the Gamecube.
@BensonUii well my whole point is that buying the neon console, one would be required to spend 80 bucks on a controller set to have a matching console.
@Tsurii 40 hours
So n64 games are a given again. since the left joy con has arrow buttons just like the n64 controller.
lets hope they have some other joy cons coming for other systems , i.e. gamecube still need to play Lugis mansion and Mario Sunshine.
Saying that the triggers on the joy cons kinda resemble the gamecube controller design so who knows . maybe I'm just being a bit to hopefully. lol
@Nin_Myski I preordered it a little after 9am. The only had the grey one up then.
@JaxonH Oh, I cant find it, but I left out Pikmin 3DS in that list of upcoming 3DS games. 3DS is alive and well. If they lower New to $129 and New XL to $149 it might even surge in sales w/ the current Switch price and line-up. And if they don't announce Pikmin 4 on Switch soon I'm going to have to assume Pikmin 3DS is in fact Pikmin 4. It was almost complete in Sept 2015, where is it?
https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2015/09/pikmin_4_is_very_close_to_completion_though_its_platform_is_unclear
@Grawlog The one included with the system doesn't charge the Joy-Cons.
Aaaannnnnd preordered. Wake me up in March please.
Is the hardware still made in China?
