@Cosats I totally agree with everything you say but at the end of the day it is not possible for me to play everything. The other day I wanted to.play the satellavision version of Zelda... I physically can't do this without resorting to using a ROM. Once upon a time I pirated tv shows as living in the UK I would get then late and get spoiled but in this age of Netflix I haven't pirated a film or tv show for many years. I would also never pirate a current game. Buying a second hand copy of a game still doesn't give nintendo any money.
I have over 50 physical switch games and over 150 digital so I will happily give nintendo my money but there is simply no way to play certain historically important games without resorting to the grey market. Again it may not be totally morally correct but it's that situation we are in.
@Heavyarms55 They are expensive but I only ever use Moleskin notebooks at work these days. They are so much better quality than any of the competitors I have ever used.
I don't really see this as all the characters does not mean new characters.
I would actually have rathered not every character and more new characters. Sushi Striker, Simon Belmont, ARMS characters, crash bandicoot, captain toad, Rabbid Peach etc
@ieatdragonz Why the majority of stuff I play is indie. It's about the only place these days you get real innovation and risk-taking... now I do understand why that is but that doesn't make it any different.
Played this on PC a few years ago and absolutely loved it. I would say this review is a little harsh. The characters are likeable, the story is good. It's a great little game I totally recommend.
@Mr_Horizon Have you played Ikaruga? It's nothing to do with the pixel look it is because both games feature the same colour shifting mechanic.
The reason the border looks like this is because vertical shmups are generally supposed to be played with the screen in portrait mode.
Almost all of these have the option to display the screen portrait. Most monitors and some TVs (and the switch console by its very nature) have the ability to rotate 90 degrees.
All of the genre stalwarts from Cave, Treasure & G Rev do this.
I think the main problem is shmups are such a niche product today much like 2D 1v1 fighting games are. This in the sense of they all come across as very similar (BlazeBlue, Guilty Gear, Persona Arena, Arcana Heart), but the nuances in the combos and scoring systems are there for people who love the genre and are interested in mechanics. Remember these are games that can normally be completed in 30 - 45 mins and are there to be played through for high scores and 1CCs (1 credit clears).
Its the same as me not really enjoying sports games. I think they are all the same. I know in reality they are good games and have nuanced differences I am just not their target market.
Smash Bros Switch (Hopefully a whole new game and not a port) Star Fox Grand Prix (Which I hope will be like Wipeout). port of Star Fox Zero with better controls Metroid Prime 4 (even though its prob not coming until next year) but we get Prime Trilogy to tide us over. Fire Emblem Switch (even though its prob not coming until next year) Yoshi for this Fall Switch Animal Crossing (hopefully doesnt link to mobile game) Lets Go Pikachu & Evee Mario Maker Switch. Software Classic collections (think a Switch Cart version of NES mini) N64 Classic Collection (Cart rather than a physical machine) with online multiplayer on certain titles. Some new indie ports: Cuphead, Into the Breach, FTL, The Witness, Crazy Mario Sports title... (Mario Wrestling) Some sort of LABO arcade machine WAVERACE !!! Maybe a new IP?
I thoroughly enjoyed it and as for the people saying it is for kids the navigation in the game is pretty complicated. Its all of the non fighting MMORPG quests in an enjoyable relaxin game.
@SBandy Because the retail version is due to the extra cost of Switch carts and as is the case with simultaneous releases the eshop must keep parity with the physical version as to not alienate retailers.
@0muros remember also that NICALIS are foremost a publisher. The only one of their Switch games they actually developed was Cave Story +... Isaac, Ittle Dew 2, the end is night, Wonder Boy all have other developers.
Been playing this the last week or so and it is fantastic and probably my GOTY so far.
I think the way that describes it better is its a side scrolling brawler, with the layout of a metroidvania, the quest system of a MMORPG and the general style of a point and click.
Have used BASE a few times and always been very impressed. Prices are good and for collectors editions they send in a hardbacked box rather than the usual flimsy jiffy bag most retailers use.
@wizlon I do however think it also an interesting cost-saving measure to merge all individual emergency services into one on the basis that if you need fire services you prob need police, medic, air rescue, lifeguard construction, eco-warrior as well so why not just send all the time.....
I am surprised that these MSU1 patches are covered on this site as it obviously has a good working relationship with Nintendo yet the legality of these patches is in dodgy waters.
I played the demo of this for steam way back in 2015 and it was quite good fun. Then the final game came out last year and I played it only to be surprised that the entire game is only about twice as long as the demo.
They realised this and have purposely put in several unnecessarily difficult spots to artificially extended the time needed to complete the game.
Was probably one of my biggest let downs of the year and definitely not worth a Switch port unless it is VERY VERY cheap.
@gatorboi352 As a parent with young children I rarely get a lot of time in the house to play games these days. My MAIN game time is either commuting to work or lying in bed before I fall asleep.
As such I have been playing games I would not be able to play due to them not bveing available in this way. I know a lot of my peers who are like this.
Im not saying this is everyone but I think there is a significant market for people not wanting to be tied to HAVE to be in front of a TV.
I have a decent PC, PS4 and an Xbox and these are all now largely untouched because the Switch form factor perfectly fits my life situation.
and yes I intend to play Dark Souls much like I just finished Stardew Valley, LA Noire and Doom.
On this list, I picked Stardew Valley. I had a passing interest on PC but the Switch form factor really cements it as a classic. Mario and Zelda were both great but both had IMO some big problems to stop them being my GOTY.
@pubjoe In the UK Sony distributed preorder tickets for the PS2. All of the preorders were done through Sony rather than individual stores. I seem to remember it worked quite well
@retro_player_22 As much as its pretty douchey you cant make the idea of buying something and then selling it illegal... GAME in the UK who is one of the 3 main retailers are selling it for £10 above everyone else... its douchey but you cant make reselling illegal the whole world would fall apart. And equally the resources it would cost to enforce that would be astronomical and not even vaguely viable. Police officers regularly turn a blind eye to drugs, illegal gambling and prostitution due to lack of time and resources... they are not going to go after someone reselling a video games console... I agree with the sentiment but the ball really needs to be in Nintendo's court to make enough of them so reselling isn't viable.
@AlbertXi The main appeal of the switch itself is the fact I am not sat at a computer and can play in bed, with headphones on while my wife is sat next to me, or while the kids are sleeping etc. I like playing a game before I go to sleep like some might read a book.
A good example is I am Setsuna a game I would never have played sat at a PC but I bought instantly on Switch.
Being able to access a library like steam on a decent portable device I can use in bed, on the toilet, making dinner for the kids etc etc is a very attractive prospect.
I think people will value it more based on personal circumstances and personal preference.

@OorWullie It is absolutely fine monitors in many cases are designed to be displayed like this.
Think about when you go to mcdoanlds and they have portrait screens, or in stations displaying arrivals or on the side of bus stops.
Many desktop monitors allows you to rotate them portrait as many designers prefer working on a portrait monitor when working on a portrait piece.
