There are loads of amazing shmups available on the Switch eShop, and the fact that you can remove the Joy-Con and turn the console sideways means that vertical shooters are playable in all their TATE glory.
However, one annoying element of this setup is that you have to rest the Switch on a surface or place it in some kind of stand, losing that all-important handheld form factor.
Video game journalist Jeremy Parish has the solution to this issue - he's teamed up with Mike Choi and Fangamer to prototype a vertical Switch grip which allows the console to be played in handheld portrait mode.
We don't have any details on when it's come or how much it will cost, but we already want one. Badly.

I'll be on Amazon or wherever ordering this bad boy the second it goes live.
Get a grip of yourselves people!
This would be awesome to have!!!

I've wondered since the hardware was announced why they made the joy con removable but they didn't let them attach to the top and bottom.
Though I wasn't thinking SMUPS, I was thinking DS and 3DS ports. The original 2DS is 1 screen so the software must already be programmed to treat 1 screen as 2.

Look forward to seeing the finished product and price. @oorwullie I like those little sit down table top arcade style designs. Also those standing arcade cabinet cardboard DIY kits which were doing the rounds. Like playing a mini MVS cabinet 😍
That would practically be a necessity with the shmup enthusiasts here who play in handheld. As a docked person, it's too bad I can't play my 42" Plasma in TATE mode
@NintendoFan4Lyf My hands would cramp up in 3 seconds playing like that. Also, the L/R button setup feels more authentic to the game, IMO.
@NintendoFan4Lyf Using it that way is good for Pinball FX3 as you get the HD Rumble. If I play that way though I use the touchscreen for flippers. I don't feel confident letting the Joy-con take all the weight. Other games with TATE mode would need to include an option to play this way and as far as I'm aware none do.
@masterLEON I've turned my LCD TV on its side a few times. It's an amazing way to play but I'm not sure it's doing my TV any good. I done some research to see if it was safe before I done it and from what I could find it's not a problem with LCD. Whether that's true or not I'm not sure.
@OorWullie By all means, TATE that LCD, there's nothing in there that can be affected by doing that. Think about it this way, while you don't see them around much nowadays, there were a good number of LCD monitors that were sold which had a rotating display stand as a feature, usually so you can read a full size letter paper (or A4 if you prefer). My first LCD was a Samsung 204B 20" 4:3 monitor with rotating display stand. The first shmup I played where I rotated the monitor was Mushihimesama Futari for the XBox 360 (w/VGA cable), and it was glorious! Nowadays, I have a 24" LCD on an arm mount that rotates. It's perfectly safe
Covering the air vents doesn't seem like such a clever idea...
I need!
Priced right, I'm sold. But I'm worried about covering the exhaust vents.
I don't personally have any games that support TATE mode, but why couldn't you just attach one Joy-Con, then play it Game Boy-style? Seems far more practical than a grip that could cover the vents.
@OorWullie It is absolutely fine monitors in many cases are designed to be displayed like this.
Think about when you go to mcdoanlds and they have portrait screens, or in stations displaying arrivals or on the side of bus stops.
Many desktop monitors allows you to rotate them portrait as many designers prefer working on a portrait monitor when working on a portrait piece.
@Lroy have you seen the wooden arcade cabinet ones - saw some on Etsy - really wanted a mario one but both Mario designs were slightly off for me - the zelda one looked amazing - I’ve held off but am tempted - £35
That looks really uncomfortable to hold...it looks too top heavy but maybe I’m wrong
@Stocksy Hmm, not sure I have. Will have to take a look into that. Cheers.
That looks like a day one purchase for me, at any price.
The only concern i have is the air vent, they definitely need to make sure not to block it.
@Lroy https://goo.gl/images/zaE23H
There is image - can’t find on Etsy now but is on eBay.
@Stocksy Cheers!
@Lroy they also do plain ones on amazon for a tenner and there is a template on reddit to customise yourself and plenty of cool ones others have done - I am tempted but it’s loads of effort and I’ll use it once ha
@Stocksy Ha! Ha! Same here.
which games support TATE mode?
@masterLEON @TheGameTutor Thanks for the reassurance. Looks like my TV will be getting flipped on its side a lot more often.
@fco Off the top of my head
Danmaku Unlimited 3
Pinball FX3
Namco Museum (some of the titles)
Strikers 1945 I & II
Gunbird
Samurai Aces
Gunbarich
Heroic Episode
Starforce
Traverse USA
Crazy Climber
I think that's all of them. The Arcade Archives require a flip then stretch to get them to the optimal size but it's easy done.
I use a mobile device neck holder for shmups. Looks a bit odd but it’s the way to go for shmups at home!
I'm not taking any credit for this, but now that I've found it, I want to order one 3D printed for me, and you all can too:

I want one.
@rjejr
The Switch needs a power button, cartridge slot, volume slider, charging port that can also be docked, and ventilation. Can't add a JoyCon rail with all that stuff in the way.
@westman98 Looking at it now.
The bottom is fine, shouldn't be a problem putting a rail on either end. Serial Barcode is at one end but just move it to the back or inside the rail.
Top is a little more crowded on either end as you pointed out, but that looks like it may have been done as much for symmetry as anything else. The power button is small, it can fit all the way at the other end. The volume rocker does need to go somewhere, maybe where the cart slit is, move that to the bottom next to the SD card. You would have to take it out of the dock to change games, but I'd bet most people do that anyway, changing those tiny carts while it's in the dock under that hard to open flap seems like it would be easier out.
So there you have it, plenty of room, not an issue really. The reason it's all spread out like it is now is b/c it would look stupid if they squished it all together for no reason. Who knows, maybe New Switch or Switch 2 will work that way? Nintendo spends millions on R&D, they could figure it out if they really wanted to.
@rjejr
Buttons, slots, and vents wont be going inside the rail, that I can guarantee. Your idea sounds like something will have to be placed inside the rail.
Anyways, Nintendo and the vast majority of game developers won't be making games that require players to flip their Switches horizontally, so don't expect a Switch hardware revision to take that into account.
These are neat but I am fine just playing the games on a bigger TV on my dock. Despite the fact that you can setup the Switch vertical like that, you still get a bigger picture on a TV.
I need this.
@westman98 "won't be making games that require players to flip their Switches horizontally,"
Yes I know, there are several reasons not to have the Joycon on the top and button, so they'll probably never do it, I just didn't think space was one of the reasons.
Playing those games on the TV would look mighty stupid, can't put it in the dock, no game development. Those are all legitimate reasons not to, but when I first saw the Switch in all it's switchable glory, actually back when it was all NX rumours all the time, I thought it would be a good idea for DS and 3DS games. I'd think there was a chance wed get a 4DS after all, Nintnedo does like it's 3DS games it seems, but any of those will just go to mobile now. Mobile will be Nintendo's new portable game library.
That would be amazing with Ikaruga
