Capcom’s popular Street Fighter series is a household name at this point, due in no small part to the hilarious amount of rereleases and sequels that the series has received over its long run. The Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection aims to celebrate this legacy when it launches later this month, and in the run up to the game’s release, Capcom has begun a video series in which it reflects on the development and design of the main Street Fighter games.
The first video is posted above, detailing the original game in the series and its successor, which hit it big in arcades and laid the groundwork for all that would follow. It’s an interesting look at a key part of gaming history and goes to show how much things have both changed and remained the same as the series has worn on.
What do you think? What’s your favorite Street Fighter game? Will you be picking up the collection? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

Three of them:
1. SF II : For its Epicness. Even inspired Jackie Chan dressed up in Chun Li outfits.
2. SF Alpha 3: For its Gauge Meter A/V/X-ISM and More sophisticated 2D Art style.
3. SF III 3rd Strike : For its Gorgeous 2D details & Super Art System (Choose 1 from 3)
Moreover, i use Chun Li / Cammy oftenly as my Femme Fatale.
2. Alpha 3 all the way!
Maybe in the retrospective they can explain why in the UK the Switch version is a tenner more expensive on the eshop than on PS4 when there is price parity in other regions?
Maybe Nintendo Life could ask them for an explanation?
Alpha 3. I'll definitely pick this up. Megaman Legacy Collection 1 and 2 and the X ones probably not since the SF collection is all on one cart and the others are not. Stupid Crapcom.
SF II for me. I grew up playing it and it has a lot of memories for me.
I imported an American SNES back in the day (god knows how my electrician uncle got it to work on our TV) and had the original SF II, as well as Mario and a few other games.
Man, I loved SF II, it made a huge impression on me, and even though it's slower and clearly not as good as the other versions, it's always been my favourite for the nostalgia. I used to play against all the local kids on handicap because I'd gotten so good with all the practice. I fired it up again recently and was terrible at it!
@SBandy like they’d have the balls or the integrity to do that, lol.
Kinda wish more people were around when this place was still vc-reviews. Then you’d know why I trust this place as much as I trust that I’d be fine if I jumped off a bridge.
It's nice to see how they explain the differences between the versions of the same game.
But it's gonna get weird when the come to Street Fighter Alpha 3 if it doesn't include 3 Prime and Jet as hidden bonus games or something :/
I know it’s not on the collection but ultra street fighter 4 is absolutely amazing. For the ones on there street fighter 2 turbo and alpha 3 are the best. They are all good though......apart from the original maybe
Simply one of the most iconic arcade gaming series in history. Arguably the title that defined the medium in the early to mid 90s. Really hoping to pick up the collection at month's end if priced more reasonably. Last I checked it was £45. No sale at that price.
I played the original SF II on SNES and arcade and was hooked on the series and fighting games ever since. My favorite in the series? Probably Alpha 3 or Super 2. I haven't played enough SF 3 to give a fair assessment(I rented in on PS2 way back in the early-mid 2000s). I'll be getting this collection day 1, can't wait.
@Mr_Pepperami still play this. Absolutely love it
@Lroy it also gets more expensive if you don’t have a controller with a d pad
Alpha 3 is where it’s at 😎
Alpha 3, Third Strike, II Ultra. Cant wait for this collection.
I have to say, its a real shame Hyper Street Fighter II failed to make the cut in this collection because that is the best version of Street Fighter II.
Can't wait to finally get this collection.
@1UP_MARIO Ha! Ha! Yeah, I only have the Pro Controller or Joy-Con Grip. What other controller for this game do you suggest? HORI Arcade Stick for Switch would be nice but over £100 at present. Too much for my wallet unfortunately.
@Lroy pro controller with a dpad is fine. Anything other than joycons
@1UP_MARIO Oh I thought your comment about the D-pad was referring to the whole criticism of the D-pad on the Switch Pro Controller thing.
Nostalgia: Super Street Fighter II
Nowadays: Ultra Street Fighter II
@Lroy lol. I dont own a pro controller for the switch yet. But any dpad is better than using a joycon to fire ball and shoryukens
My fave is Street fighter ll but then thats the main reason i bought the snes classic.... personally i would’ve liked to have seen ultra street fighter 4 come to the switch.
Im not looking to pick up the anniversary edition, i bought ultra SFll at launch and came to the realisation that i rarely played it. In the end i sold it.
@Caryslan In terms of single player, it wasn't that good though. For one the AI are near impossible to beat and you always fight the Super Turbo version of them whether you play as the inferior version or not. Unless you had some friends around to play with, the game is just too broken to play solo.
Ultra is my fave iteration of II but III and Alpha are my loves.
@samuelvictor The bonus stages were added back in the GBA version of Super Street Fighter II Turbo Revival. Only downside to that port is that the western version had a glitch where you can't fight Akuma in Arcade Mode.
@SBandy Because the retail version is due to the extra cost of Switch carts and as is the case with simultaneous releases the eshop must keep parity with the physical version as to not alienate retailers.
@TheGameTutor
That probably is it but it has alienated me, the consumer, and I will be buying it for PS4 instead for 15 quid cheaper on Amazon.
Like I said there is price parity in other regions so it is a joke.
My birthday is May 31 and I've dropped some hints I might want this game. If I don't get it, that's fine, I'll go out and buy it sometime. Favorite is and always will be SF II, specifically Super SF II Turbo.
