@anoyonmus My bad for making a confusing statement, it's just that people sometimes think the Switch gets the short end of the stick because it's underpowered, I meant to say this has nothing to do with that and this remaster is bad on all platforms.
For once this isn't an issue with the Switch at all. This "remaster" is just awful all around. Despite Nightdive's great track record, this one just doesn't cut it, even on PC.
However, the original game is actually really good. The best way to play it is by using SCUMMVM, which received a carefully reverse-engineered engine for this game a while back. If you buy the Enhanced Edition on GOG, you get the original game alongside it, which you can then use with SCUMMVM. (GOG used to sell the original version but was removed when the 'Enhanced Edition' was released.)
This is the first really glowing review I've seen for this game. Most people I've heard from chalk it up as being decent but not great. I'm on the fence myself on this one. I got bitten by Octopath before. That game got some glowing reviews upon release, but it turned out to be a pretty mediocre game. It had a good battle system, but everything surrounding it was pretty bad. Triangle Strategy looks like it'll be in the same ballpark: decent battles with everything surrounding it being throwaway. We'll see. I'm still knee-deep into Elden Ring after 100 hours anyway.
There really isn't any reason to use ZSNES. It's not very good at all. The only ones you want to use are the various SNES9X forks (depending on your needs), bsnes, the SNES emulator that is part of Higan, or perhaps Mesen S (though I do not have enough experience with that one to really give a good review of it).
The general rule of thumb (IMO) is, do you need a fast, very compatible emulator that runs on any device? Pick SNES9X. Do you need one that values accuracy above all else but is more resource-intensive? Pick bsnes.
Yeah I'm sure ZSNES can be even faster than SNES9X but that's because it isn't very accurate at all, and you're going to hard-pressed to find ANY device that a fork of SNES9X runs very well on.
The Silver Case is actually one of the few Suda games that I like. I'm actually quite surprised by the tagline of this review, because pretty much ALL other Suda games are style over substance, and The Silver Case is actually the only one that has SOME substance, so in my opinion it's actually the other way around. Don't get me wrong, it's definitely not a perfect game, but I definitely think it's worth exploring. I think it's worth pointing out that in general, I don't really like visual novels. But this one at least had some interesting story and writing on offer.
@Donutman The term "mobile" is used almost exclusively to refer to games on mobile phones (basically almost always modern smartphones these days). Video game consoles that you can take with you and play on-the-go are usually called "handhelds". When you say "mobile game", almost no one will include, say, a 3DS game in that category.
I always figured that (despite not being super interested in this) the localization was a given, considering that Persona and P5 specifically was a big success outside of Japan, and Omega Force constantly localizes tons of Musou games. Omega Force cranks these out by the dozens, and few fail to reach the west. They even localized that Arslan crossover game of all things.
If this turns out to be true (I somewhat doubt it), then I highly doubt these would be proper remakes / remasters. Instead, I expect that these will be (poorly) emulated titles, with some exceptions I suppose. Remember the Wii collection of Super Mario All-Stars?
I would be VERY happy to be proven wrong of course. Personally I'm especially excited to see rock-solid ports of Sunshine and Galaxy 1&2.
@RickD You'd think that, right? But I've seen patents granted for unbelievably generic things. I've seen patents which have been granted that basically describe, if taken literally, almost all networked software. The way patent laws and grants work, at least in some places, is often mindboggling.
@Mountain_Man Right. And people are saying it's an incomprehensible and terrible design choice.
Imagine you were to buy a box a breakfast cereals, but it would include razor blades aside from cereals. In your world, that would just be a design choice and something you'd have to just deal with. In my world, that would be cruel and indefensible.
(Don't know why I decided to use this bizarre analogy but I like it so much now that I'm keeping it)
It is so absolutely incredible to me that people defend the single-island choice here. There is no excuse, non whatsoever, for having designed the game this way. I don't think there is another company in the world, besides maybe Apple, who can get away which such awful, consumer-unfriendly game design choices, and still have the pleasure of getting those defend by fans who swallow literally anything that is shoved down their throats. Sad.
I'm enjoying the game right now, because I don't have to share it, but I know several people for whom this is a problem, and no, they don't have several hundred euros lying around to graciously donate to Nintendo just so they can play a game they purchased properly. And if they did have that kind of cash, I'd highly recommend them not to give it to Nintendo, because there are no depths this company will not sink to.
I don't know why there is such hostility towards leaks from the users here. They breached their contract with Nintendo, and they have to suffer the consequences for that. But that is between them and Nintendo. As someone standing outside that relation, I welcome all leaks. The more information I get upfront, the better. I understand that people dislike spoilers, but I've never been spoiled by a leak in my entire life, and most likely never will be. In traditional, non-gaming media, leakers, whistleblowers and anonymous sources are essential in informing our daily news, and are an important component of news organisations. I don't care how the information was about obtained, even if illegal practices were used (for example, hacking). All that matters to me is if the information is accurate.
I'd probably pick up every single one of them if I'm being honest. I'm least interested in the Persona games, since I'm not much of a fan of those and vastly prefer the classic SMT series, but I'd even pick those up as I might enjoy them a little more in portable format.
Also, I still don't think an Etrian Odyssey game would work on the Switch, or on any other platform tbh.
@Peach64 Right, and you think 50,000$ is going to cover the costs of porting this? And even if it did, if Platinum is unable to fund a project with such a tiny budget, they would have ceased to exist a while ago. The entire point of this Kickstarter is to gauge consumer interest, which I personally find a very cynical way of doing so.
Wait, what the hell does he mean by "I didn't expect it to be as bad". This is the man in charge of leading the entire project. How the hell does one end up surprised about the quality of one's own product?
@TravinoEXE "It's his first foray into leading a development team.". Uh, what do you mean by that? He's been in the producer seat for almost 20 years now, so this is hardly new for him. It's the first time he's been in charge with assembling the team and finances from scratch I imagine, but nothing about the process of developing this title should have been new for him. It's what he's been doing for most of his career in fact.
Personally, I highly, highly recommend that people give this game a pass if they haven't played it yet. I played it for the first time about two years ago, and while I did beat it, I thought it was one of the worst games I had played in a long time. It has, in my opinion, almost no redeeming qualities. The story is absolutely terrible in every conceivable way. Not only does it not make a lick of sense, it also has incredibly annoying characters that you will most likely not feel any connection to. Many of the plot points are so bafflingly bad and incompetently written that it's ALMOST worth playing the game just to witness it. Almost. On top of that the gameplay is godawful. It combines all the worst elements of the classic Final Fantasies into a single game and then adds the terrible, terrible draw system on top of it. The result in an extremely boring and tedious game. To make matters even worse, this is a really poor port.
This is actually considered offensive? I mean, don't get me wrong, I can definitely see how the game's QUALITY can be offensive, but it's actual content? C'mon guys. C'mon.
As for those calling out the "double standard" for not including figures from the Islamic faith, I understand what you're saying, and obviously the devs didn't have the guts. However, I think it does make sense to point out that the visual depiction of Muhammed is a very contentious issue, and is oftentimes not accepted at all, with even religious scholars having strong opinions on it. There is however, a rich tradition of visually depicting most of the other figures in their respective culture, in religious art of otherwise.
Jesus even has the uncanny ability to appear on toast and masses of fungus! Really, I find it hard to even see what's wrong with Mr Jesus' depiction here? He's badass, similar to how he's depicted in religious art and super sexy. Playing this game might even give you the sudden urge to start praising him methinks!
So what exactly is wrong with him being depicted here? Is there a common consensus that Jesus should not be depicted in any way? Obviously not. Should he not appear in video games? If so, what about the various religious videogames/edutainment he appears in? Should he not be depicted in any form of media, period? Oh boy, I think we're going to have to start burning a LOT of books, movies, comics, etc. Should he not be depicted in a derogatory way? I don't know, but he looks pretty awesome here! Even if I were to be an overtly considerate person and wanted to make sure not a single person of the faith is offended, where can I find the big fat manual that describes precisely how I should or should not depict Jesus? Sure, I could give the pope a call, but he only represents a portion of the Christian faith. So what's a developer of mediocre video games to do?
In other words: nothing to see here, let's all move along.
P.S.: I go through life trying to be considerate and I try to make sure I don't needlessly offend people. I imagine some might even accuse me of being too politically correct. However, the flip side, I do expect people to try not to get their panties in a twist for no reason either.
Not sure what he's talking about tbh. Re-creating everything? We're talking about a port here. The primary thing that would seem difficult to me is optimization. XCX seemed like it was highly optimized for Wii U, and they cut a lot of corners in a smart way.
Anyway, I own all original versions, but I would probably buy a version of any XC game for Switch, just because I usually enjoy longer JRPGs on a portable platform.
I've enjoyed playing on my Switch for the short time I've had it, but this list really is just a long and painful reminder of what I hate about the last 3 generations of Nintendo consoles. You can't just buy a base pack of the console, you have to spend so much extra to get an enjoyable experience. The base internal storage is laughibly small, and the lack of a proper dpad almost forces you to buy the ludicrously expensive pro controller. I still don't have the latter, because it is just too expensive. I just can't afford to pay that much for a standard controller. And god forbid you ever experience problems with that piece of plastic junk called the dock or your joy-cons, because those cost about 3 times more than you would expect!
On top of that l, they also trafic in ultra-expensive DLC in the form of amiibo, they have recently introduced the worst premium online service ever, the Switch offers no backward compatibility, their online stores have all been terrible (the Switch online store even forces me to use it in French, a language I don't even speak very well. I cannot use it in either English or Dutch, and customer support basically sold me that, nope, you're screwed), they fail to offer the most basic of functionality (e.g. voice chat, profiles, proper friend lists, etc.) and games for their consoles are stunningly expensive.
Honestly, as much as I can enjoy a good Nintendo game, I think they are probably the most customer unfriendly company in the entire industry, or at the very least at the top. And like I said, I don't enjoy making that claim, because I play a lot on my 3DS and Switch and I like them both a lot.
The Luigi's Mansion 3 teaser was nice, but there's too little information to get excited about. Other than that, the news was neither exciting or was stuff we already knew about. We get to pay for the same old Final Fantasy games again. Yay? People are acting like this somehow signals the end of the "Sony / SE era", choosing to forget that Square has been consistently releasing their games on both PC, Sony, Nintendo and even Microsoft systems for decades. Even the NintendoLife articles are wrong in stating that up until now Final Fantasy VII has remained a Sony exclusive. Guys, FFVII was released on PC in 1998. It was a Sony exclusive for about a year. It's even available on iOS and Android.
It does make me sort of happy that SE has decided NOT to port FFVIII though, which sort of feels like they're admitting that it was a dumpster fire of a game.
And the whole deal with the online service is getting more and more embarrassing to be honest.
I'm a bit of an Animal Crossing fan, so I liked that announcement. However, so far, the games released in the series have all been extremely similar. If this Switch version is going to be too similar to New Leaf, I can't imagine I'd want to play the Switch version over the 3DS version, because the 3DS version is infinitely more portable.
@Yorumi Keep in mind that the "loser pays" basically entails that certain entities are unable to assert their own rights because they are unable to accept the insane financial risk of a serious lawsuit. I'd personally say, as someone who knows nothing about the law in his own country or anywhere else, that, as an outside observer, the high financial requirements of engaging in a lawsuit presents a danger to the ability of people and companies to defend their own rights, because it imposes a high barrier of entry that is simply insurmountable for many.
But, like I said, I know nothing about this stuff (like 99% of all the other people commenting here)
@BraveBiT I'm sorry, but I have an extremely hard time believing that kids who follow coding classes are going to be entertained by this. Programming with a general purpose programming language offers you an infinite sea of possibilities, you can build any piece of software you can imagins. This is a 70$ cardboard Ikea kit. Maybe I'm out of touch, but if I were a dad, I'd know which one of those two things I'd like to introduce my kid(s) to.
@mj2k18 Plenty of unique and original games are being made every day that have nothing to do with Nintendo.
The first half of this year has been surprisingly devoid of big titles for the Switch. Let's hope the latter half contains more interesting stuff to capitalize on the consoles succesful launch.
I don't mind buying old games, but I do mind buying the same 20 games again and again every time a new system comes out. You'd think that with Sega's back catalogue we'd see some more gamez every now and then.
Normally I'd stick to the ones on Steam, but the quality of the emulation there is less than stellar.
@Blizzia
Using the pointer sounds like a recipe for disaster.
@Spectra
While I share the exact same concerns (as I always do on region-locked systems), I should point out that The Alliance Alive is not an Atlus title. Atlus USA took care of distribution in the West, but it was developed by Cattle Call and published by FuRyu originally. EO is property of Sega/Atlus, so we might see different treatment for this series. Fingers crossed.
@brunojenso
True, but you'll mostly be looking at your own party for the majority of the game, and you can pick their appearance yourself.
Wow, I totally missed this news. Kinda devastated we won't be getting the 3DS version. I tend to play JRPGs on my handhelds (because I don't tend to like more modern console JRPGs, and because the portability allows me to actually finish them), and this would have made my 3DS library complete
I was sort of expecting this, considering Square Enix didn't even bother to localize DQ7/8, but this is still sad news for me. Dragon Quest is the only Japanese SE property I care about, and its the only one they refuse to localize consistently. I just don't understand.
Usually I tend to go for the official brand, because usually (some notable exceptions) Nintendo's accessories are of decent build quality. But with the absolutely absurd amounts Nintendo is charging for these Switch peripherals, I understand people are flocking to third parties. I would do so too, I think, but not after some thorough research.
@darkswabber Nope, it's a problem on all versions of the game. PC version probably suffered the least if you applied the correct fixes. It's a shame really, it's a blemish on an otherwise nearly flawless game.
@Slapsillium That's interesting. I played the original on 360 version of day one, and have had 15fps on this version ever since.
@tanookisuit If you're fine with 30fps, more power to you, but don't pretend like it's not a significant difference. I've played Dark Souls 1/2/3 on both consoles and PC, and I can say 60+ fps is a very significant upgrade for this style of game (and it is for pretty much every game).
Kind of a weird thing for them to say performance isn't the issue, as the game's performance on PC isn't too great either, especially for a game that looks this ugly. The PS4 port looks pretty damn mediocre too. I think that they've got their work cut out for them.
@Agramonte And keep in mind that the Switch port of Doom was an excellent technical effort. I don't think we're likely to see a lot of third-party Switch titles that are optimised as well as that title.
@roadrunner343 I don't I'll ever be able to understand that (which is perfectly fine btw), but I suppose I CAN respect that. By which I mean, I can respect your intentions.
@roadrunner343
On one hand, I do agree with you on the fact that getting a gun if you wanted one is probably stupendously easy (no matter which part of the world you live in), and that maybe stricter gun control in the US isn't going to change a whole lot about it. I also agree that, at this point in time, restricting certain types of firearms probably won't have a huge impact.
On the other hand, I just don't see a whole lot of reasons to defend the ability to own a firearm as a civilian in the first place. Whether this has any bearing on the amount of mass shootings does not even matter all that much to me. A firearm is a tool meant to threaten, harm or kill, and I don't think anyone who is not part of some form of law-enforcement should every carry or touch one.
I moved to a new place a couple of months ago, but before that I used to live in the middle of the orthodox jewish community in Antwerp. After the 2016 Brussels bombing attack they had soldiers patrol the streets day and night (and to this very day, they still do). It's all very silly, as there is no use in having those men standing there all day, but I think it was primarily meant to appease the local jews, who were already frightened by another incident in Brussels in 2014 when a jewish man was shot in a Museum during daylight. Either way, after a couple of weeks I started to feel very angry, because I had to watch very heavily armed soldiers walking down my street every day. The fact that I constantly had to see people carrying heavy firearms was something that made me quite emotional, as I strongly dislike the sight of them. I have absolutely no use to ever use, touch or see a firearm for myself. I can appreciate the engineering that goes into the design and manufacturing of a firearm, but I have a hard time whenever I see people use it.
I should also point out that I have NEVER in my entire life seen a civilian carry a firearm in my country, and I do intend to keep it that way. The only exception was when I was about 15 years old, I got the opportunity to spend about a 1,5 week in Houston when my dad was up there for about a year for his work. That was the first time I've actually seen a life firearm, and I remember seeing them available in stores. Thinking about it now, I can still feel myself getting a little emotional. I realise this may sound silly, but it's the honest truth.
When you have a view on firearms like that (and I'm pretty sure the vast majority of people over here share the same view, though I can't confirm this), it's kind of hard to understand why owning a firearm is actually quite common in some states of the US. For example, you say you own a firearm and frequently carry one. I personally have a very hard time understanding why anyone would ever choose to do that. I'm not saying you're not allowed to, as the law clearly states you can and you have a license, I just mean to say that it's one of those topics where I have an immense amount of difficulty understanding the people on the other side of the argument.
By which I mean to say, it's always going to be a very hard discussion and people are going to have a hard time understanding each other because of the very NATURE of firearms. And I'm personally very happy that this is a discussion we don't really need to have over where I live. That's a least SOMETHING we don't need to talk about over here
1) Please don't handle billing information yourself in this day and age 2) Please don't store CVV. Negative consequences FAR outweigh the (potential) benefits
@Hikingguy I don't think not selling games in the entire EU necessarily qualifies as a good idea.
Anyway, this should obviously be enforced. I don't understand why anyone would preorder on the eShop (it's essentially a triple-whammy of gaming sins: pre-ordering, doing it digitially, and on a shop that charges more than physical copies). That doesn't mean I don't think their consumer rights (which our European government thankfully tries to defend every once and a while) shouldn't be protected.
Hard pass. Haven't seen a good Shining game since the Saturn days. The Shining series has become a bit like the mana series. A container to dump low quality games into hoping they sell based on name alone.
@gcunit Sort of agree with you there, except that Crash Trilogy was a bona fide remake, which I'm all for in this age of lazy remasters (some of which barely qualify for that title)

IMO: Avoid at all costs.
Re: Review: Fight Of Gods - A Comically Bad Crossover That Nobody Asked For
This is actually considered offensive?
Re: Yoshi’s Crafted World Is Getting A Physical Release In Japan With Just A Download Code Inside
Have fun playing this once the eShop inevitably shuts down!
Re: Monolith Soft Director Would "Love" Xenoblade Chronicles X On Switch, Money Stands In The Way
Not sure what he's talking about tbh.

Also, these aren't deals, these are just affiliate links to products that are just priced at MSRP.
Re: Guide: The Best Nintendo Switch Accessories - Best Deals On Controllers, Cases, And Headsets
Re: Opinion: What Did You Think Of Today's Nintendo Direct?
Re: Federal Government Is Officially Investigating Nintendo For Possible Patent Infringement
@Yorumi
Keep in mind that the "loser pays" basically entails that certain entities are unable to assert their own rights because they are unable to accept the insane financial risk of a serious lawsuit.
But, like I said, I know nothing about this stuff (like 99% of all the other people commenting here)
Re: Federal Government Is Officially Investigating Nintendo For Possible Patent Infringement
@Mortenb
Most patents tend to be rather abstract though.
Re: Review: Nintendo Labo: Toy-Con 02 - Robot Kit (Switch)
@BraveBiT
I'm sorry, but I have an extremely hard time believing that kids who follow coding classes are going to be entertained by this.
@mj2k18
Plenty of unique and original games are being made every day that have nothing to do with Nintendo.
@MartyFlanMJFan
He's sort of right though.
Re: Rumour: Capcom Has Listed An Unnamed 'Action/Adventure' Game For E3 2018
Not on PS4? I'll believe it when I see it.
Re: Nintendo Plans To Go Big With Super Smash Bros. For Switch At E3 This Year
The first half of this year has been surprisingly devoid of big titles for the Switch. Let's hope the latter half contains more interesting stuff to capitalize on the consoles succesful launch.
Re: Sega Announces AGES For Nintendo Switch, Mega Drive Mini Console
I don't mind buying old games, but I do mind buying the same 20 games again and again every time a new system comes out.
You'd think that with Sega's back catalogue we'd see some more gamez every now and then.
Normally I'd stick to the ones on Steam, but the quality of the emulation there is less than stellar.
Re: Etrian Odyssey Is Mapping Out One Final Adventure On Nintendo 3DS
@Blizzia
Using the pointer sounds like a recipe for disaster.
@Spectra
@brunojenso
True, but you'll mostly be looking at your own party for the majority of the game, and you can pick their appearance yourself.
Re: Dragon Quest XI On Switch Will Arrive "Much Later" Than Other Versions
Wow, I totally missed this news. Kinda devastated we won't be getting the 3DS version. I tend to play JRPGs on my handhelds (because I don't tend to like more modern console JRPGs, and because the portability allows me to actually finish them), and this would have made my 3DS library complete
I was sort of expecting this, considering Square Enix didn't even bother to localize DQ7/8, but this is still sad news for me. Dragon Quest is the only Japanese SE property I care about, and its the only one they refuse to localize consistently. I just don't understand.
Hopefully the PC port will be decent then.
Re: Nintendo Has Detailed The USB Cables You Can Use To Safely Charge Your Switch
Re: Dark Souls Remastered To Feature Improved Frame Rates In Blighttown
@darkswabber
Nope, it's a problem on all versions of the game. PC version probably suffered the least if you applied the correct fixes. It's a shame really, it's a blemish on an otherwise nearly flawless game.
@Slapsillium
That's interesting. I played the original on 360 version of day one, and have had 15fps on this version ever since.
@tanookisuit
If you're fine with 30fps, more power to you, but don't pretend like it's not a significant difference. I've played Dark Souls 1/2/3 on both consoles and PC, and I can say 60+ fps is a very significant upgrade for this style of game (and it is for pretty much every game).
Re: Soapbox: With Microsoft Playing Ball, It’s Finally Time For Banjo-Kazooie To Return To Nintendo
Not going to happen
Re: Ark: Survival Evolved Dev Says The Difference Between PS4, Xbox One and Switch Isn't As Big As You Might Think
Kind of a weird thing for them to say performance isn't the issue, as the game's performance on PC isn't too great either, especially for a game that looks this ugly. The PS4 port looks pretty damn mediocre too. I think that they've got their work cut out for them.
@Agramonte
And keep in mind that the Switch port of Doom was an excellent technical effort. I don't think we're likely to see a lot of third-party Switch titles that are optimised as well as that title.
Re: White House Meeting With Industry Execs Focuses On Violence In Video Games
@roadrunner343
I don't I'll ever be able to understand that (which is perfectly fine btw), but I suppose I CAN respect that. By which I mean, I can respect your intentions.
Re: White House Meeting With Industry Execs Focuses On Violence In Video Games
@roadrunner343

Re: Random: Nintendo Lands Itself In Hot Water With Norway
@Hikingguy
I don't think not selling games in the entire EU necessarily qualifies as a good idea.
Re: Sega's Shining Series Returns To The West After A Decade Away, And It's Coming To Switch
Hard pass. Haven't seen a good Shining game since the Saturn days. The Shining series has become a bit like the mana series. A container to dump low quality games into hoping they sell based on name alone.
Re: Rumour: Spyro Trilogy Coming To Multiple Formats Next Year After PS4 Exclusivity Ends
@gcunit
Sort of agree with you there, except that Crash Trilogy was a bona fide remake, which I'm all for in this age of lazy remasters (some of which barely qualify for that title)
