Following on from the news it would release the original three Dragon Quest games on the Switch, Square Enix has now announced Dragon Quest Monsters: Terry's Wonderland Retro is coming to the Switch eShop next week in Japan. This is the very first entry in the spin-off series and was compared to the Pokémon games at the time, due to gameplay similarities.
The newest version is a port of the original 1998 Game Boy Color title (also known as Dragon Quest Warriors outside of this region) and will arrive on Switch on 17th September for 1,500 yen. The Switch iteration will allow users to swap between color and monochrome graphics, and change background wallpapers.
Gematsu notes how useful information and functions will be displayed on the border, to enhance the experience for the player. You can visit the official Japanese website and check out some screens of the game below:

Oh man, I LOVED dragon quest monsters.
It felt kinda like Pokémon but more in-depth in some ways.
That's really cool. Fingers crossed for English like the others...
Come on, give us the English version dammit!
But... why the GBC version and not the 3DS one?
What a coincidence, I just bought the GameBoy cart a week or so ago. Haven’t had a chance to try it yet though.
So we got some Arcade, NES/Famicom, SNES/Super Famicom, N64 (Turok, Doom 64), Sega Genesis, SMS (Wonder Boy), Sega Saturn (Panzer Dragoon), Sega Dreamcast (Ikaruga, Grandia II), 3DO (Super Street Fighter II Turbo), Sega CD (Night Trap), NeoGeo, Xbox (Doom 3), Xbox 360 (Tales of Vesperia, Minecraft), Xbox One (Ori, Cuphead, Super Lucky's Tale), GBA (Gekido, Mega Man Zero/ZX Collection), GameCube (Resident Evil 0, REmake, RE4, Crystal Chronicles, XIII), Wii (Xenoblade Chronicles HD, Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz), PS1 (Grandia, Final Fantasy VII-IX), PSP (Lumines, Star Ocean: First Departure R), PS Vita (Corpse Party: Blood Drive, Sword Art Online, Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of DANA), Game Boy (Final Fantasy Adventures, Aladdin, and Lion King), Atari, PS2 (Final Fantasy X, Onimusha, Devil May Cry, Okami), DS (The World Ends With You, Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy), 3DS (Rune Factory 4, Alliance Alive, Code of Princess EX, Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate), PS3 (Last Remnant, Resident Evil 5, Dragon's Dogma, Skyrim), PS4 (Overwatch, Warframe), and Wii U games all on Switch and now we're getting GBC games with Dragon Quest Monsters too. Damn that's a lot of games from different platforms for just one system.
Pricing is a bit steep but I'd be interested to try it out. I've only played DQM: Joker and Joker 2. I've heard good things about the GBC originals.
That's pretty pricey for a glorified GBC ROM dump, but if I were a fan of the series, I would gobble it up. Hell, I'm still tempted as I love the look and feel of GBC games.
Hell, Nintendo could sell the GB/GBC Pokemon games on a Switch cart, charge full price, and I would lap them up like the sorry little Mareep that I am.
@NicolausCamp Probably because it'd be easier to port, I guess.
The 3DS version used both screens and the mobile version (Terry's Wonderland SP) opted to keep a similar setup, which forced the game to only be playable in portrait mode (like all the other DQ main series ports).
I would hope that they still decide to port it somewhere down the line and if not, they could very well just port the 3DS version of Dragon Quest Monsters 2 instead.
Dragon Quest 9 cometh when?
pleeeeeease bring this to the west. its one of my favourite gb games
@Silly_G oh man that would be such a good idea, maybe every version of every generation up to the DS....
Have a facility to trade between games on the same cart. And the ability to switch the DS game screens around left or right depending on your dominant hand or even have them vertical for flip grip owners...
Might as well throw in the 3ds games too seeing as they didn't use much 3D.
Oh well, will probably never happen but I reckon a cart that contains every game from red blue yellow up to ultra sun and moon would be properly worth £50
@ralphdibny : Only 50 quid? Mate, you're dreaming if you think Nintendo would hand over all of the games at such a price! The downloadable versions of the Gen I games alone cost AU$39 if you want all three versions (and that is without the Super Game Boy colours for Red/Blue), or AU$78 if you include all three Gen II versions as well.
To further highlight Nintendo's stronghold over their IP, they were so reluctant to release Super Mario All Stars via Wii VC like every other SNES title (and charge 800 Wii Points for it) that they pressed them to a disc and charged about AU$50 for it! (I may be a little off with the suggested retail price, but it certainly would not have been any less than AU$40). Sure, they included a collector's booklet and CD as well, but it was ridiculously expensive for a glorified ROM dump on a disc with virtually no QoL enhancements whatsoever.
To date, they still haven't released it on Wii U or Switch, so I wouldn't put it past Nintendo to issue another physical release at some point, maybe for Mario's 40th anniversary.
At best, Nintendo would only release the classic Pokemon games on a per generation or per core game basis, but certainly not in one fell swoop in a single package.
If it supports English it's a direct buy for me!
@Silly_G haha I know I'm dreaming. They will never release the package let alone at a reasonable price point! Ever since getting sonic mega collection on GameCube I have never felt like individual Rom releases are good value...that's not to say I haven't bought a fair few in my time anyway!
Interesting...
I'll be checking this out for sure
Please please PLEASE announce a EU release, or at least be playable in English.
Contrary to what this site reported the Japanese versions of DQ I-III do not support English.
@manu0 It's the Asia version that supports English. Available from playasia pre-order. Got my one on order.
@silly_g "sorry little Mareep that I am" LOL that made me chuckle
I know this is only in Japan (for now?) but this is a -very- interesting precedent
DQM is the reason my brother got a link cable for his GBC back in the day. Lots of good memories with that series
I have not felt nostalgia burn in my gut so strongly. I need it to survive the fire.
Will buy immediately if it has English!!
I loved Dragon Warrior Monsters--definite buy from me if it gets released here!
the japanese version is in japanese only (checked on eshop)
@NicolausCamp Cus it's cheaper to just put a Game Boy emulator on the Switch then port over the 3DS remake
I have a brilliant idea! Lets boost the popularity of dragon quest in the west then release a bunch of dragon quest games in the east to watch them suffer!
Dear Nintendo:
Please make two switches connect so they can play wii u/ds/2ds games.
Then you can give me dragon quest monsters from the ds.
@Jasonmd Lol yeah this has been extremely frustrating
In Japan only? Can we call them racist until they add it to the non Japanese stores?
I wouldn't get too excited. Square-Enix has already remade these games on the PS1 as well as the 3DS and neither version has gotten a localized release.
I had that game!! It’s awesome! You can breed them to come up with more powerful monsters and they are all based from the series
I still haven't gotten into Dragon quest, but I've played a good chunk of the Monsters games. Give us this one, and preferably 2 please! It's literally just an already translated ROM, realease it digitally on the eShop.
@Beermonkey I know. But this site reported the Japanese versions support English
Wasn’t this a dual SKU? They should probably release the other one too and bring online trading.
@brandonbwii no, the sequel was
@brandonbwii Nah, that was DQM2, the sequel. It was released as a remake on the 3DS in Japan where it included both scenarios.
Great news. I hope it comes to the West, this time I don't need it to be physical (although a collection of the spin-off series wouldn't hurt).
Nice touch, that Game Boy / Game Boy Color option.
@Barbara001 100% this
@NicolausCamp simple...3DS is not quite dead yet so why release a game already that's on 3DS now. They will give an even older game . Well be happy
@Alucard83 Well, they DID port the 3DS version to mobile, but like @KyleHyde mentioned above, the 3DS version used dual screens. It would be a simple enough workaround, but yeah, this is just Square Enix being Square Enix again...
Whoever is in charge of localizing and releasing Dragon Quest games at Square Enix must hate us.
Dragon Warrior Monsters was hands-down my favorite GBC game. Its breeding mechanics put Pokemon Gold's to shame. Playground wars ensued, and getting Dark Drium took extensive planning and cooperative effort. Does this have an English option in the menus?
I like where this is going
I hope this starts a trend of bringing a whole bunch of Game Boy and GBA games to the Switch! Although 1500 yen, roughly 13 dollars, is a tad high for a game like this. It probably costs more because Nintendo scrapped Virtual Console and forced them to either build their own emulator or fully port the game.
@Beermonkey actually no. Look at the site again. It does not support English.
@Dirty0814 Asia version is multi language. States English subs. It's the one I've ordered.
https://www.play-asia.com/dragon-quest-123-collection-multi-language/13/70d0en
Do they also dare to charge $60 for it?
If I remember correctly this game has a large focus on trading monsters which doesn't seem possible on Switch. I still want it though, the first game was awesome.
Pro tip guys: there is a completed fan translation of the 3DS remake of this game.
Dragon Quest 1-3 when?
