Getting a new piece of technology is a lot like getting a puppy on Christmas Day. The rest of the afternoon and evening are likely to be spent playing with your new present, marvelling at how perfect and new it is, and changing all the settings so it's just the way you like it.
Fast forward a couple of years, and the passage of time will have taken its toll. The puppy is now a fully grown dog, and even though you still love it very much, you have to admit that it sure does love to chew on your brand-new trainers, and it keeps leaving piles of sick right outside your bedroom door like a gift.
Likewise, my Switch, after four years, was beginning to show signs of wear and tear, and Switch years are a lot shorter than dog years. A life on the road scratched it up worse than a cat who lost a fight, and I'm apparently not the only one who's got a network of cracks down the back - apparently there's some issue with parts swelling when the Switch gets hot. Sounds dangerous!
Not to mention that it heaves and whines like a teenager being forced to go on a hike every time I ask it to run games, even the simple ones. It's getting to the point where I'm half expecting it to just explode one day while I'm playing Story of Seasons in bed.
And, like almost everyone who's owned a Switch for a while, I have Joy-Con drift on all four of my Joy-Cons. I mostly use a Pro Controller to get around the issue, but that means I can't play handheld for very long, or I'll end up chucking the thing at the wall. And that definitely wouldn't help.
I can't get it fixed, because it's a UK Switch, and I live in Canada, and they won't let me send it in. I'm also a little nervous to send in the device I use for work, since I wouldn't be able to review anything, check details, or take screenshots for articles for who knows how long. Also, I lost the charger and the dock somehow, and I feel like Nintendo will refuse to fix the Switch of someone so dang careless.
Long story short, I've been waiting on the Switch Pro for a while now. I know it's just a rumour, and I know this is all very "first world problem", but realistically, if I'm going to drop a significant amount of dosh on a new Switch, I don't want it to start deteriorating immediately like my current one. I don't want to deal with Joy-Con drift again, but I also don't want to feel forced into buying third-party peripherals to fix it - although, I have to say, the Hori Split Pad is pretty tempting.
I have so far assumed that a "Switch Pro", or whatever they end up calling it, would be designed specifically to avoid the myriad of issues that come with the basic Nintendo Switch. I assumed that it would do some clever hardware trickery to make drift a thing of the past. I assumed that it would be so powerful that it wouldn't wheeze pathetically every time I try to play a game of Picross.
But all of those things are just that: assumptions. None of us really know a damn thing about what Nintendo is planning for their next hardware reveal, or whether it will address the issues that the current Nintendo Switch has at all. So, like an idiot, I'm sat here patiently waiting for a magical cure-all model of Switch that may or may not be better than the limping old dog with a missing eye and bald patches everywhere that I currently have. I love the little guy deeply, but he's on life support at this point. The Switch, that is. Not the dog. The dog is an illustrative metaphor.
I'd love to be able to upgrade at the same time as leaving this one to rest in peace, but realistically, it's more likely to die on me long before a new Switch model comes out. I can't afford to wait much longer, so I'm probably gonna splash out on that fancy new blue purple indigo blue Switch Lite that was just announced. At least that way I won't feel too annoyed if the Switch Pro gets announced immediately after I hit the "Buy" button, which it almost definitely will.
Are you in a similar boat? What did you end up doing after/before your Nintendo Switch finally bit the bucket kicked the bullet died? Let us know in the comments!

Yeah, Pretty Much
I’m okay with my animal crossing switch. Just keep the games flowing. Lol Of course if there is a new one I’ll be suckered to getting it because that’s the sort of fan I am, but until then I personally enjoy my experiences on my current switch model so content is me presently.
My switch is going strong but I mostly play docked. Only playing handheld for flights and train journeys (back when those were a thing).
I'll definitely need Nintendo to fix the Joy Con drift on any switch pro before buying one however. Two left joy cons drifting so now only using my Pro Controller as well.
I shan't hold my breath.
I still use my launch day Switch daily with zero issues, well ok I did have a pair of Joy Cons start drifting on me but none of that other stuff like the system cracking has ever happened to me knocks on wood
The real bummer is that even if or when the Switch Pro releases, bots and scalpers wouldn't allow me to purchase one until years after launch anyhow. Six months since the XSX launch and I still can't just go on Amazon and click "add to cart".
Joy con sticks are easy enough to replace yourself, as is the Switch back cover.
My Switch is now going the way of all devices that spend a long time in my room, I think. I only have to load up and the fan starts up like a rocket launch, and in recent times it hasn't died down to fully silent. A new model Switch would be a great thing to have come out some time in the next year.
I gave my first Switch to my Daughter & it's still going strong. My AC edition Switch however, developed a fault after about 10 hours (the CPU fan goes into overdrive if you use it outside the dock and sounds like the plastic catching on something), but I didn't want to return it during Covid lockdown otherwise I'd have little to help combat my mental well being. Eventually I'll have to open it up and replace it myself I think.
Hori split pad is all you need! I haven't touched my drifting joy-cons since I got it! They are also good for my humungous hands in handheld mode and my pro controller is close by for TV or when needed haha
Nintendo fixed 2 joy cons and within weeks same happened again, I now own 4 sets of drifting Joycons!!!! I tried fixing myself and usual tricks but it is a temporary solutions. Hopefully any future models will eliminate these issues.
I noticed my V1 Switch internal battery started to depleted quickly after long time i played in docked mode then i returned to play in handheld mode. 😕
I'm on my 3rd one now, technically. Traded in launch day for the red box/'better battery' one when it came out, then the 'better' one in for Mario Red (which came out of the box with an issue and needed an exchange, so that's something.) If they release a Pro this soon after the Mario Red coming out, it's gonna be annoying.
My switch is from the launch period, and it has shown its age frequently over the years. There is a crack in the shell from a few years ago out of nowhere, it sounds like it struggles to process any game, and of course the kickstand has been lost to time within the first few months. A new switch model is needed, and hopefully it actually addresses these sorts of issues, as well as being able to competently run games on it. Like Xenoblade 2 hardly reaches 720p 30fps docked? What? It really hurts to look at the older demanding titles and see them struggle to reach the bare minimum of acceptable.
And of course, COLOUR OPTIONS. The black the switch comes in by default is so boring, sure the joy con are meant for personalising it but I don't ever use handheld often enough to notice. So its a black box under the TV. Hopefully any special editions or basic variants they do actually have different looks that aren't just decals on the parts you aren't gonna be looking at 90% of the time.
Luckily I don't seem to have had drift on any controllers, but I wouldn't doubt it'll happen one day.
My Switch still looks the same as when I bought it years ago, what has everyone done to theirs?
I know I'm not as dedicated a gamer as some of you but come on 😂
Well as far as "Switch Pro" articles go this was one of the better ones.
My 3 1/2 year old Switch is fine. Not leaving the dock helps. Won't buy a Pro a year before the next gen successor launches. Though I would buy one if it's a tiny $199 SwitchTV box I could hook up to my tv, give my son the current one. But that probably ain't happening, so I'll wait for Switch 2 DS.
So you treat the product badly and then complain a new version doesnt come out ? Microchips shortages won't make your wish for now come true.
CAN YOU SPEAK UP PLEASE KATE I CAN'T HEAR YOU OVER THE NOISE OF MY SWITCH FAN WHEN PLAYING ANIMAL CROSSING
Friend of mine got few cracks a week ago, until now he played lighter games... but then he got Monster Hunter Rise and that game makes your Switch cook because of how hard it pushes the Switch.
I had to replace thermal paste on mine (got it in 2017) because the fans was extremely loud and the Switch was still very hot (it is still hot now, but the fan is more quiet)
however... knowing Nintendo these issues will persist on the new "Pro" model, including our "fan favorite" drift...
Thankfully my 2017 V1 Switch hasn't had any glaring issues (tis a US console, I'm from UK, doubt there's any difference in production line though)
I use Hori Split Pad for handheld play due to all the joycon drift.
A friend recently bought himself the Monster Hunter console as his V1 console battery was lasting less than an hour for any game. And he's had a Switch a year less than me.
Thought he was a bit mad to double dip when there's surely going to be a Pro announced soon.
Both my Switches are going fine, but I use the SPP on my big one anyway for comfort purposes.
I'm in the same boat yes and it annoys me greatly that Nintendo refuses to acknowledge the issue properly. Maybe they're having that much trouble developing driftless controllers for the switch though that they keep having to postpone the release I'd that pro model.
I just hope it'll come soon because I would like to be able to play my system without controller and shell cracking issues. I'll gladly get a new Switch model for that alone. The rest would be bonus.
@Mambitos Idk, it almost feels like dropping something is my fault, some might say I would treat it badly.
Seriously though, how do you know she treated it badly? Everyone drops things, it's possible that she just dropped. In an earlier article she says she traveled a lot with it, that could be a reason.
People must treat there tech pretty rough, my original Switch from launch is in awesome condition, gave it to my sister when the better battery model came out, and the screen is scratch free, no cracks on the case, and the joycons do not drift.
Same on my two newer model consoles me and my daughter use.
I take care of my Switch and its condition is just like the day I bought it in 2017.
I do not know what good will a Pro model give us as Nintendo will hurt themselves by releasing exclusive games for the Pro model.
The title of this article is every company dream, don't ask for the product to be better and last longer, ask for something new to buy asap.
My switch for now is fine luckily and so many of my much older consoles, but, if I'll need a switch pro to release cause the old one died of some 'natural unavoidable issue', I can assure you I won't be very thankful to Nintendo >.>;;;
Yeah, I bit the bullet and bought a new Switch a few weeks ago - rationalising that if they announce a Pro its probably still going to be at least 6 months out from whenever they announce it, probably going to be really hard to get hold of given the semiconductor shortage, and if I keep the new one in really good condition I'll be able to sell it on at not too huge a loss. And there's also still the (increasingly slim) chance there's nothing in the works at all.
Heck, said semiconductor shortage might be why they haven't announced it yet, they may be waiting longer than originally planned for that to clear up before making a move.
I don't entirely trust my old Switch to have survived another year of daily use, so hopefully the gamble works out
@Vapeguy yup my launch day switch is still going strong but I have friends that want to buy it off me and I want to upgrade to SUPER switch! 😁
I got my switch on launch day and I game a lot. My machine is sometimes louder than usual but not too bad and the joycons develop drift but I clean them it goes away, the docks good, the chargers good the case has no cracks. I'm not worried about a pro though I have a xbox series x for 4k stuff and if cracks appear etc I'll just buy a new backplate , if the fan gets too loud I'll take the back off and clean it etc
Yeah. I want a new model because my switch is basically dead. I have to tape the kickstand to the switch people. TAPE. This is not ok. Plus, my sceen is permanently dirty for some reason.
My Switch is fine and has been going strong handheld 90% since launch. The internal fans decide to activate moreso nowadays than before but I haven't had issues. My main issues is drift con issues with numerous joy cons.
The issues don't compare with the PS4 which is a tempremental Godzilla in loudness. We even lost much of our save data due to it crashing on us once. The disc eject also activates randomnly now and again overnight!
Right now? Would be difficult to justify a big expenditure on a new Switch which will be essentially the same gen but "upgraded". It would have to be a super special upgrade. "Switch Pro Advance"?
I hope you get your Switch problems sorted somehow though, Kate!
I have a day one switch and im on the same boat, not because I've been careless with it cause my switch doesn't have any cracks on it but because ever since de 10.0 update my switch keeps losing sound when in handheld mode. I've been able to fix it by letting the switchs battery run out completely. Now after the 12.0 update I haven't been able to get the sound to work. So tldr nintendo ruined my switch and now im probably gonna have to get a lite since handheld is mostly how i play
My Switch is just fine. I have no reason to buy another one.
Bought my Switch on launch day and is in mint condition still. But if the pro exists and is a substantial upgrade, I'll get it instantly!
I mostly play docked, so I'm good for now.
I own a Switch Lite, I bought it almost the day it got out. I chose the lite because I didn’t own a TV back then (no space for it) so why bother spending a 100€ more? But now that I just bought a TV, I definitively want to switch (ahah) to a regular Nintendo Switch. But knowing they might be about to release a new model, I’m kind of hesitating. Should I go for it right now and enjoy my library immediately and my brand new (second hand from 2017) HD TV or should I wait a bit longer for an hypothetical new system...?
day 1 switch still going strong, but 4 joycons playing up, so ive double dipped on a new switch not 2 days ago, extended battery version, old one will be on ebay asap along with all old joycons to offset the cost
My day 1 is still in pretty good condition. The joycons on the other hand...
Is the whining a dying fan? I replaced that on my original. That is probably also the cause of it being too hot or warping the shell. I didn’t get the cracks though, but the backing is easy to replace. The rest of the shell takes much more effort.
Please no! Other than the divine Joy-Con drift that even ps5 now suffers of, there is no reason for a switch pro right now. It won´t be cheaper and if I´m to put $350+ on a new console this year, it won´t be for a slight upgrade to the one I have, even if it has exclusives (I would hate that). I would almost immediately go and buy a PS5 and keep my current switch as second console.
I sure hope everyone that is having fan issues on their switch has tried to used a can of compressed air to blow out the dust. That's a basic and cheap fix for most electronics.
My Switch is actually pretty quiet, but then again, maybe my gaming laptop has damaged my hearing without me realizing it.
Get the SplitPad pro, definitely the best way to play in handheld mode, especially for fighting games or reflex heavy platformers (Messenger, metroidvanias).
For those of you dealing with drifting joycon, they are easy to fix. I’m not talking about the temporary cleaning fixes, but actually replacing the defective stick. Last I checked, the sticks can be had for around $5. Add another $5 if you don’t have the screwdriver to open the joycon. Basically, if you’re capable of removing small screws you’ll be able to replace the stick. There are countless videos to show you how. Takes maybe 25 minutes if you need to follow a video, 10-15 minutes if you know what you’re doing. I replaced both of my left sticks over 2 years ago and they’ve lasted longer than the original ones. I have a couple spares ready for when they eventually go defective again. No need to keep dealing with drift, or buying new joycon, or waiting 3 weeks for Nintendo to fix them.
If they dont fix the joycon issue i wont buy it again.
To answer a few questions:
I have never dropped my Switch! I don't treat it quite as delicately as I should, but it's usually kept in a safe place.
I'd love to fix my Joy-Cons myself - I even ordered a DIY kit with new shells and sticks a few months ago - but I live in a place where post regularly never makes it to my house. Add the pandemic to that, and I'm lucky if packages take 8 weeks to arrive, because at least they didn't disappear!
And yes, I wish that consumer electronics were built to last, too. Sigh
Hope the new Switch won't get too hot. After a few hours of Switch Lite it get uncomfortable to hold.
My Switch is still ok, as I mostly play docked with Pro Controller or with a TPU sleeve. But I already had to change the fan and in couch multiplayer both right Joycons sometimes loses connection for a few seconds and can easily been distracted by my low table...
I fully agree with Kate, Nintendo just released it already. My Switch was doing fine but after playing Monster Hunter rise with the Joycon my Switch is acting by itself now. The camera view is making a 360 degree without touching it. Seems like Rise might be a Joycon destroyah for some people. I guess i have to get a pro controller.
@Baloo day 1 joy con still going strong, but two of my pro controller drift. Luckily, I watched a YouTube channel, and repair it with contact cleaner spray, now both pro controller are perfect for more than a year already since I repaired.
So far so good (touch animal crossing wood)! However, the first thing I noticed was the build quality (3 years ago) and how hot it got in docked mode (jam hot!!). Hopefully does not give in anytime soon, but this is the first time buying Nintendo consoles that I have not really been impressed with the quality
Man, I have the launch Switch from 3/2017. I don't have ANY of those problems 🤷🏾♂️ I've had a drift pair of joy-cons twice but the last pair of Joy-cons I bought over a year ago hasn't drifted once. They did make a better Switch as far as battery. Just buy that one or keep waiting. Weird situation Gray has. I guess I'm lucky.
My Switch's fan is dead, it overheats quickly, I literally cannot play any game without placing a fan to blow air at my Switch.
None of my other systems died this quickly, aside from my ps3 and ps4. My Wii which I bought about a year after release survived until last year. What is this nonsense? Is getting quality products too much to ask for?
I’ve only really had issues with the joycons. Everything else works fine.
I feel this, but not on a physical wear level - more on the battery really losing its muscle. Physically, my stuff usually lives forever - I want to see a switch pro too, preferably with a monster hunter rise upgrade on it.
My switch has seen better days too. If it dies, I may try work my way through my 3ds backlog while waiting for the switch pro.
I'm more than fine with the original specs. Current Switch specs allow me to get the kinds of experiences I need in my life perfectly adequately. And if it ends up lowering the price of the console in the future, all the better. I want to see Nintendo get back into the zone they were in with 3DS, a cheap handheld gaming device with awesome selection of different games.
What I would like to see more of is competent optimizing on Switch games.
EDIT: And also, my original model has had drift, and that's been its only issue. It doesn't have scratches or any sort of "battle damage" after having been played since the launch day.
‘Not to mention that it heaves and whines like a teenager being forced to go on a hike...’
You had me worried there for a second. Not gonna lie. I was like - this article took a TURN.
Always amazed by the many reports of people having multiple (if not all) of their joy-con drift, especially within a few months. I bought my Switch at launch and have accumulated several sets of joy-con since...and have yet to experience drift on any of them.
I do wonder if some batches are just more likely to drift?
My Switch blew out one of its speakers (I suspect Freedom Planet was the culprit) and my Pro Controller left analog stick has a tendency to drift down somewhat but it's rarely noticeable. My Switch screen has seen better days too but all things considered my Switch is doing pretty well. There's life in the old dog yet!
A Switch Pro would be nice though.
It sounds like you need to take more personal responsibility for how you take care of your property and stop using it as an excuse to partake in rampant consumerism.
My Switch works like the day I bought it.
My switch has NO issues at all. Not even Joy con drift and I had it since 2019.
I say we stick with current switch until next year
My Oct 2017 Switch has zero issues. I thought I detected a subtle hint of upward drift in the left joycon but a quick sprinkle of contact cleaner a couple of months ago and nothing since.
This sounds a lot like "I'm not taking care of my handheld console and it's Nintendo's fault!"
I bought mine on release and it's still in tip top shape.
After my PS3 and PS4 the switch fan makes no noise to my ears.
My switch started overheating since a couple of months ago when I played Boswers Furry. Since then barely lasts 20 minutes. Often it overheats right when Im in top 5 I’m fortnite. I hate it! I really want to get a switch pro to solve this nonsense. A repair is €70-80... So I wish to just get the pro...
At least they're easy to find here in Halifax if you need an emergency replacement!
My switch from 2017 still going strong - never have any problems with overheating or excessive fan use and I play mostly handheld (on the couch so I don't hog the tv). The only slight issue I have notice is the battery life is slowly getting worse but still manageable for the moment.
Sounds like the common theme from those that have issues is to do with overheating - causing either the fan to work overtime or for parts of the unit to buckle under the heat. Not sure why that would happen in some cases but not others although maybe some particular games are demanding a lot, or maybe some units shipped with a dodgy batch of fans.
I can not believe the drift issue is something they actually are getting away with. it is Red Ring of Death level and should have similar consequences.
My main takeaway from this is I don't think you should be allowed to own a dog!
If you're luck is like mine, as soon as you cave in they'll announce it. Take this L for us.
When new phones had something actually new to offer I would "accidentally" break my phone every couple of years. Now that they offer nothing new my phone is four years old, and whilst the battery sucks it still rocks. Maybe you are sub consciously breaking your switch. Maybe you just suck. I don't know.
ah yes, the "switch pro" that has been leaked about 25 times now. I believe the most recent one was during monster hunter rise, correct? Can't wait for the next totally real "switch pro" leak
My system definitely overheats. We got a cooling fan for docked mode which helps a bit but I really dont feel it’s overly taxed to begin with. Otherwise joy con drift was common, we sent in our controllers and one still went back to drifting. Most notably I’ve found the third party A1 controllers are absolutely horrible. I have 4 from various Walmart clearance sales that died within months of use. I hope the Switch Pro is heartier than this.
yeah my cooling fan gets noisier every day it seems. Switch pro better be this holiday or I might just have to buy another normal Switch. I just know with my luck as soon as I buy one the Switch pro will be announced.
Switch Pro.
Its not happening.
I had joycon drift but use WD40 for it. My R shoulder button works only 40% of the time, and battery is not as good.
So please give us a Switch Pro to address these issues already. I bought a New 3DS years after the original 3DS. I did the same with the DS and DS Lite. I did it with GBA and GBASP. I’m willing to deal with this the same way.
@chardir my back cover was difficult to replace. One screw lost it's head while removing. I cut around that screw with scissors to remove most of the back, then trimmed away the edge plastic to the point I could twist it off the screw with pliers. When adding the new back, other screws started losing their heads, so I couldn't put it on very tightly. Now the second back is cracked anyway.
i have my extended battery Switch that one of my cousins bought to me when he went to USA novembre 2019 close to Black Friday, since dezembre 8th 2019 and luckly my Switch have not sufered the dreaded Joy-Con Drift, some games like Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild/Animal Crossing New Horizons make the fan of my Switch very noisy, but beside this, my Switch is working well since i start playing it on dezembre 8th 2019.
This is real. I have had to replace my backplate and just last week the vent cover broke. I need to upgrade now!
My Animal Crossing switch still works. However, I think the hardware itself is starting to show it's cracks. And a 4K dock won't do much for me because my main TV is maxed at 1440. This needs to have something really truly new. Also it should come with a pro controller IMO.
You could replace the fan yourself to fix the whining. It's something I did this year and it wasn't too difficult. Also Nintendolife has a great video on fixing joycon drift yourself. If you haven't I'd recommend you subscribe to their channel!
My Gameboy micro and GBAsp are both in much better condition than my Switch. They were made of much more sturdy stuff. The Switch is Nintendo's flimsiest console to date. If mine does conk out before the pro, I might get a lite, because at least it has a D-Pad and will probably creak and buckle less due to the lack of rails for the joycon. I might also just play my older, more sturdy consoles, until a pro comes out.
I personally don't see the rush. New tech would be great, but at what financial/battery life cost? Also, how much more power will we get a handful of years down the road? I think waiting for a true jump and the author sucking it up and buying a current unit would be the sane option but then they'd miss their article quota. 🙄
Apart from usual joystick drift, the fan in mine rattles a lot. Don’t want to risk taking it apart for that. Really want the Pro.
I don’t need a new model but I want one 😀
My launch unit is as good as new (other than drift that has been fixed twice), but I’d still buy a pro if it has more processing power.
@Kimyonaakuma Yeah, people are idiots, especially the author here. Two years?! My launch edition is still 95% as good as it was day one and that includes letting my children play with it undocked on the weekend.
I fully believe they take better care of it than the supposed grown-up that wrote this piece lol
Meanwhile my original SNES, GBA SP and 3DS are working great.
Nintendo's quality standards have surely plummeted.
My launch Switch other Switches are thankfully doing well, outside of some warping on the OG model. I certainly do not assume that those experiencing issues are at fault. The Switch has inexplicably gotten a pass by many for all of it's issues. 'Just buy another Switch'. Blaming people for not caring for their systems is a symptom of this bizzare apologist mentality. The Switch has many, MANY design/material issues.
And I won't be picking up a new Switch model for at least 6 months after launch (even if I could find one). Fool me once Nintendo... I'll be waiting out a 'shakedown' period. It's not just the Switch. Recent system launches have driven that point home. Be patient and wait to see what problems/bugs/issues present themselves.
But even if I wanted one, barring some logistical dark magic, Nintendo faces the same issues/barriers to shipping that all other electronics manufacturers do. The component shortages and longer manufacturing times will impact any attempt at a system launch any time in the near future. And degenerate scalpers will do the rest of the work, making systems impossible to find at retail.
If all of mine were to fail, I'd just go back to my 3DS and Wii U and be very content to ride out the storm.
Personally on my “release day” switch I have replaced both my joycons at least twice; all the buttons inside the railing don’t work, and I had to replace the button for ZL because the ribbon cable snapped.
On top of that I also replaced my fan, which made a massive difference, since the old fan was extremely loud.
I am desperately awaiting the new switch, as I would love to have a bit more horsepower to hit 60fps at the same resolutions that we get 30fps at.
My Switch is in a similar condition. I'm just waiting to drop cash on a pro and will give my current one to the kids.
I bought a Switch on launch day and haven't had a single issue beyond Joycon drift with the left stick, which Nintendo fixed within the warranty. I've put countless hours into it. I thought that the rumors relating to the Switch cracking from heat were entirely disproved, also. A few photos online in 2017-2018 made people speculate that, but the Switch is made of industrial plastic that's safe up to 700° F. Meanwhile, the Switch stays in the 45-95° F range most of the time and certainly never gets close to 700°. It would have to be damaged some other way first or just be a defective model to begin with for that to happen.
@NicolausCamp Exactly. This article and the ensuing comments are basically confirmation that I know how to take care of my stuff. Not only does my Switch look fine, my DS and Wii still work and are available for when the mood strikes me.
@The_New_Butler No...no it isn't a myth, whatsoever. The majority of the new systems have not been activated. So no they are NOT in the hands of gamers 🤣😂😆
You know my pain 😂 no point till a new upgrade is there. Very similar with phones tbh. There has to be a significant upgrade to move to the next model!
I've had mine for years and it works fine. No cracks, no drift in any of my Joycons, no whining when it's running anything.
Even if they did launch a new one, good luck getting one with the current hardware shortages.
Pro systems are stupid and a waste of money. Even if a pro system were 10 times more powerful than the base.. You'd never get that experience because devs will always make sure the game runs on the base model too. The limits of the non-pro models act as a bottleneck for your experience on a pro model.
They don't need to make a pro model. They just need to make one with a build quality that isn't absolute garbage.
My launch day Switch is chugging along fine, not even any joycon drift, but I play docked using my pro controller 98% of the time. Still I will happily upgrade to a Super Switch if it is ever announced!
I personally would never opt for a Switch Lite, given a choice. Not having the ability to play docked on TV is a total deal-breaker for these aging eyes. Needing reading glasses for books or handheld gaming is such a nuisance...
@chardir the joycon are a pain to work on because they have tiny little pieces, ribbon cables, and springs that don't want to go back in their place.
The system itself is not bad too work on.
Please people! Always repair your stuff or replace the battery if need be. I know it's not as exciting as buying a new shiny thing, but it's always cheaper and better for the environment.
@The_New_Butler
Saying something is a myth is to suggest it didn't (or doesn't) happen at all. https://screenrant.com/ps5-xbox-series-x-scalpers-sales-profit-launch/
Sometimes when I read the comments on articles like this I feel like the luckiest switch owner alive! 3 years of daily use and travelling with just a screen protector and a decent £10 hard case and it’s fine. The Joycons drift occasionally but I’ve found just clicking them down and wiggling them around fixes it. I do wonder if this is a scale thing, you make millions of units and 0.01% of them fail, then that’s still 1000’s of people who will be angry and complain on forums while the millions more just play happily.
@Deminox have you seen what Nvidia's ai upscaling can do? It's pretty dang impressive. So even if the devs made games for the current switch, a new pro switch could still give a much better graphical experience with Nvidia new chip in there.
@Deminox Except you can play the same games at a higher resolution, higher fps, with quicker load times. Like the PS4 and Xbox Pro systems which by all accounts offered a substantial graphical upgrade to their originals.
I'm in a similar boat, and the Switch Lite we got our Mum isn't in great nick. Problem is not having an idea of when the much rumoured Switch Pro will arrive. If it's over a year away I might live with a replacement, but if it's post E3 then of course I would rather wait! Give us some heads up Ninty, please!
Debating between immediately replacing mine with the lite or waiting it out for a pro and hoping it doesn't start a house fire until then
Whats wrong with most of you people? i had my switch for 4 years. play almost every day. moslty hand held. I travel a lot for work. im a seafarer. and i carry the switch with me every time i go. and my switch is perfectly fine. the only probles i had where with this stupid joy-cons. probles i had to fix myself buying spare parts. but beside that, everything else works fine.
Honestly, since I am a repair person and I have had experience with the DS and 3DS. I will most likely frankenstein one together or find whatever parts are available to make it work. My device is lightly used so not having those issues, plus my unit is 2nd gen and not the first go round.
I've had some joycon issues but have went through the calibration in the settings and they seem fine for now, but I guess I don't use the sticks on them very often, since I usually just use the SNES controller or the Switch Pro controller. But I've noticed the last few months the fans get really loud for no apparent reason, but after looking it up it sounds like it's completely normal and nothing to worry about so I just ignore it now and it goes away after a couple minutes.
@OnigiriSan a hypothetical new system is very likely to have 4K output as one of its main features. So as you've got a HD TV, I wouldn't think its worth waiting for a still rumoured device, and what seems like limited availability at launch thanks to component shortages and scalpers
Forget a Switch Pro. I just want them to release a Switch 2 in 2023.
Undocked in between a PS4 and a PS4 Pro graphics wise. Docked on par with a PS4 Pro but with added DLSS for image quality more in line with current gen consoles.
CPU would need to be 8 core minimum and be on par with Xbox series S in terms of capability to ensure a steady stream of ports throughout its lifetime.
720p OLED. This would be fine for handheld. Just the Switch to OLED would bring a marked improvement in clarity and contrast. Plus sticking to 720 would mean improved battery life plus all of the extra GPU grunt would have less of an issue keeping titles at native resolution in handheld mode.
Improved Joycons and haptic feedback, as well as a proper D-pad!
I agree. Release the Switch Pro already.
But also make hardware with greater durability.
My Switch with Dock is still going strong, despite being mostly used handheld by my 8 y.o. daughter, and been dropped a few times (screen protectors saved the day). No JoyCon drift either, but non of the family could be described as hardcore gamers. I don't have any other current gen consoles to compare to, but my 14 y.o. Wii did die a couple of months back (and that was still being used regularly)
@timleon
Nice comment. Not due to empathy, but a rational perspective on the data. I too rarely have hardware problems, but it’s rational to look for answers of both user and hardware even if it is hit and miss.
My switch of 2017 is still in great shape. Little scratch here and there but still looks perfectly fine. Switch pro will buy when it's officially announced by Nintendo and not a random rumors.
First time I got the drift i just bought a Hori D Pad Joycon. Got the Zelda one for like 15$ on clearance, they're on Amazon normally for 25$ I want to say. I didnt mind giving up left rumble as the thing worked awesome in old school and fighting games and fit just fine un my Satisfye grip. I also have pro controllers so replacing it wasn't a big deal until Mario Party cane out, then I just got a replacement thumbstick and the tools needed to fix it for I think less than 15$ in a kit on Amazon. Plenty of videos on YouTube on how to do it and turned out was pretty easy, but I will say it's not the first controller I've taken apart, but I'm sure a novice can do it. Worth a gamble at that price and you'll be proud of yourself for fixing a Joycon.
switch pro ain't happening man since were only a few years away from switch 2.
Even drift using youtube can be fixed Still using switch v2 nothing wrong. The hell even v1 still works fine.
I think Kate should splash out on that fancy new blue Switch Lite that was just announced, because ....
1) She can write an article on exactly what shade of blurple it is in real life
2) She could write another article about how to use two switches together
3) And another article commemorating her O.G. Switch after it dies
4) Write a piece about her feelings of buyers remorse once the 'Switch Pro' is announced
5) As a gaming industry professional new kit is a business expense she could use to deduct tax
I have my Switch since day one, and live with several dogs who I didn't get as puppies, but who were abandoned, bullied, dumped (for chewing a bit too much... On people, in the case of the biggest one, who understandably had major trust issues with humans after all he's been through, and being put on death row because he stood up for himself and his sister, also living with us. I have a few scars from our early days together, but I would've gladly given a whole limb if it could have kept this amazing soul alive).
Anyway, my Switch is still going strong, despite the taxing conditions of living in a forest, being surrounded by "wild" dogs, being played handheld almost 100% of the time, and being used a lot. But I'd welcome a new model when it's ready. My lifestyle is one of material "poverty" by choice. I limit by budget WAY below the poverty line, and we still live a "rich" life here, the hardest part is the conflict with the systems in place that would want us to fail and tax everything five times if we allow them. Ironically, this lifestyle allows me to get something like a new Switch when it arrives. Whether it's an upgrade, or a new system all together.
All together repeat: "whether it's an upgrade, or a new system."
Sorry, I recently re-watched Airplane!.
I've had mine for two years and it's still in near mint condition and working perfectly. No drift issues either. Most people who complain about Switch reliability just aren't maintaining it properly. Keep it docked and use the pro controller. Only use handheld when travelling or when you absolutely can't use the TV. It'll last for years then.
EDIT: Also how can you lose the dock? They can't exactly slip down the side of the couch.
It’s really worrying how fragile a lot of modern systems seem. I’ve only had to repair one system since I started gaming in the early 90s and that was the disc drive in my Wii after 10 years (OK the screen cover on my OG Game Boy fell off and I stupidly tried to reattach it with model glue when I was a teenager). My Mega Drive from 93 still works perfectly, though I’m quite aware that modern systems are far more complex with multiple moving parts.
Still, given the Switch’s mobile abilities it is more likely to get damaged (dropped etc) just like a phone, but when I hear people have had several Xboxes or Playstations it does make me question just what exactly are people doing with them?
Launch day Switch with launch day JoyCon and Pro Controller.
Left JoyCon gave up around half a year after the release of Xenoverse 2 (Heavy use of the left stick button), ProCon gave up a month ago.
The switch itself doesn't even have a single scratch, dent or break point.
Usage in both docked and handheld, predominantly docked.
But i'm also someone who's phone doesn't have a single scratch anywhere after 10 years.
I'm in the same boat. Had my Switch since launch but it's been breaking down slowly after I've had it for around 2 years... It's definitely the worst quality hardware Nintendo has ever released. I've owned all of their consoles and handhelds up until now, and never had any of these issues before. I'm very careful with my stuff as well.
I got a switch lite on launch day. They don’t drift apart from links awakening weirdly, which I don’t play anyway xx the sticks just feel flimsy to me, I tend to play games that use the d pad to control now! Xx
I can't get it fixed, because it's a UK Switch, and I live in Canada, and they won't let me send it in.
Dear Nintendo of America(...s),
The situation described above is unacceptable. Stop giving our well-integrated immigrants such a hard time! This one is even bilingual (trilingual, if you consider that she had to learn Standard English after the UK language).
Signed,
An angry toothberry
My launch day Switch is still as good as new, but compared to most people on here I expect I have very light usage. At this point unless it's a Switch exclusive I'm buying all my indies on PS5/PC and I don't see that changing unless a Pro version really does come along, sadly.
@Magician I mean you'll probably want to wait anyway, to make sure they get joycon drift solved on the new one
@jrb363 I have had my Switch for four years, I use it every day for work, I moved country with it, and I lived a year out on the road - my Switch being a bit cracked is partly due to that, and partly due to known faults with the Switch.
It's not particularly cool to come in here and call people idiots and babies for wanting a console that can stand up to life. Not everyone can keep their Switch at home in the dock all the time.
For the record, my phone, PS4, and 3DS are all in great condition. I'm happy that your Switch is in great condition, too, but at least acknowledge that some of that is luck, and some is circumstance.
I understand what you're feeling. I have two Switches. Bought one in 2017 and the other in 2019.
I've been facing the drift problem with one of my joy cons and my oldest switch has a crack near the cooling opening and a swollen area in the back part, right below the crack. All problems are in my older switch.
The newer one doesn't have any problems, but I feel its "construction", in general, is not as firm and sturdy as the older one.
When I play my old one docked, I use my 8 bit do controller to avoid the pain the drift brings
@persononinternet1242 - That's a reasonable suggestion, but I'm confident Nintendo won't bother to fix the joy-con issue.
My launch day switch started having issue a year ago. The fan was making loud grinding noise. So I had bought another one. And all my 6 joycons developed drift. I just ended up ordering a fan and some analog replacements from Amazon and fixed them myself. Switch just hums now, and drift is gone on the ones I have replaced thus far. I didn't want to send them in and pay to have them fixed, did it myself.
Had mine since Sept 2018 and the system itself is still I'd say good as new. Surprising since all the hours I put into it (more docked but plenty of handheld too) and most especially the hours put into it when COVID shut down everything.
The joy cons on the other hand got drift pretty quickly. When the left started happening it got worse and worse relatively quickly. The right one was a lot slower at first but then it went down with it quickly. I eventually bought a new pair and got the original ones repaired by Nintendo for free. The new ones are still going strong but I can't help but feel like I'm waiting for them to drift. I plan on just rotating them getting the free repairs as many times with Nintendo as needed for the foreseeable future.
Just get a Switch Lite, it holds up better as a handheld.
My original Switch is almost 4 years old and works just fine with no issues. The back of the system has scratches but that's from being placed in and out of the dock over the years. It's had a tempered glass screen protector on it since day 1 and I've never dropped the system so no cracks or dents anywhere. I have 5 pairs of joy cons with drift issues but another 5 pairs basically new to use if I need to, plus a pair of Hori split pad pro. I have 2 Animal Crossing Switch systems never used, still new in the box and 4 Switch lite systems barely used. I definitely have back ups in case my original goes out but I use it daily and have never had any problems with the system itself. That being said, I'm still looking forward to a more powerful Switch with less bezels and improved joy con controllers.
I've only had a problem with my first joycons drifting. I bought new ones and actually later on ended up fixing the original ones. I haven't had any problems with my Switch, but I also don't use it for work or travel a lot with it(especially now).
My 2DS is a tank though and I take that thing everywhere.
@jikflet Same here. I think some people are just really terrible at taking care of their possessions and are in denial that it’s actually their fault.
My Switch is fine. I did get Joy Con drift in my original red and blue joy cons, but sprayed some WD40 Contact Cleaner under the sticks and it fixed them right up.
At this point, with such a large player base I wonder if a Switch Pro is ever going to materialise, or if it does, I hope it doesn't come with the caveat of any exclusive games. Yes give improved resolution, screen and battery life - cosmetic differences for those that are bothered, but don't make it so thsg people HAVE to upgrade if they want to play BotW2.
@The_New_Butler BAHAHAHAHA! Some paid article from ARS...Yeah I'm all set. I'd much rather rely on what I know from personal experience. Restocks happen and products are INSTANTLY sold out, far faster than possible for humans. They sell out because bots are instantaneously buying them.
Jesus, how badly do some of you treat your hardware?
And the award for the most relatable article on the site goes to....
My OG Switch is living like a king atm - no near-death experience here! Hope yours lasts a while still.
Howdy. I've contributed to games on Sony's platforms but never Nintendos however I did own a Switch dev kit (early one with HDMI port built straight into it. Same as Vita dev kit once had), have friends and family who've contributed to upper-tier Switch games.
It's like everyone else, and Apple who I also follow as a developer. Companies that are close to the manufacturing company get privileged info. That ***** PixArts dev on Switch for example won't be getting info on the Switch Plus. Just befriend, marry into, live near people who are high-tier developers.
I NEED a Switch Plus too because my personal one is worn the hell out. Battery works amazing somehow though. I almost succumbed and picked up a "longer batter life Switch" but did not because I am NOT a fan of the yellow tinted displays on every single Switch made AFTER the pre-launch, dev-privileged systems. You can tell easily. My pre launch Switch has a bluer tinted display, it's more natural looking. Whereas my partner's, our kids Switch's all have these modern yellow-ish displays.
So I'm not in the position to get an advanced system now like I really damn wish to be. All I know is whats coming I just don't know when. You can imagine how frustrating this is: aging system that's had WAY too much use over the years, know 90% of whats coming, money burning holes in my pocket.
.... that last bit. I couldn't stop myself. I worked myself into frustration in a Facetime chat with "people in the know". I'm in a tizzy over it and end up buying a god damn Kindle Oasis instead! Cool machine and all. Replaces an old Kindle Voyage like. Would have gone onto a PS5 if I could get one. Yup this PS5 shortage? Even people who make Sony games cant get their hands on them. Nothing Sony [Europe] can do.
Lets go check if Fez is on the eShop yet.....

And some thermal paste (your choice of brand).
Replace the shell on the Switch and replace the analog stick and clips/latches on the JoyCons. Reapply the thermal paste when you put the Switch back together and it'll feel like a brand new system.
Trust me, it's not dying, it's just the case falling apart. I've done all this myself and my launch Switch feels literally brand new.
I bought my Switch for Christmas on 2017. Now, I play al lot. And I mean A LOT. But... aside from the cough cough Joy-Con drift, that's all pretty much OK: since I've heard about the dock scratching the screen, I have been super-careful. In fact, I didn't even buy the protective screen, and... not a scratch. Have I just been lucky? Maybe. But for now, my old pal is still on the road, and I think it will for another very long period of time.
@KateGray Yes, some of it is circumstance; why did you not factor that into the original article? No technology, the Switch included, is designed for the level of use that somebody using it professionally puts it through. Have you ever played a game forty hours straight to get a review ready before the embargo lifts? It's not meant to be used like that, most people aren't using it that way, and it would have needlessly increased the cost of the machine had Nintendo built it based on that expected use. Not to mention that you can write off a new one as a business expense, or claim the depreciation on your taxes. Things fall apart, as it has been written; it's not always problematic.
I'll take the next nintendo gaming console now please, with a few requests.
Bigger 4K O-LED screen, 1Tb system memory, 1TB expandable to 2TB memory for games, oh and upgrade everything inside.
Also I need the Nintendo VR/Mix/augmented reality glasses
Get Killer Instinct back on the switch....
Have had a Switch for over two years, lots of play time, and no problems beyond the ubiquitous Joy Con drift.
@JimmySpades this article is literally only about my Switch, I'm not saying this applies to everyone. And I'm not blaming Nintendo for the entirety of my Switch's condition, either, but Joy-Con drift and the back plate cracking are known issues with the console!
And no, I don't play games for forty hours straight, because I don't work for places that would force me to do that.
I never had any issues with my launch switch besides the console not recognizing the right joycon being attached a few times. Maybe because I never play in handheld and don’t keep the joy cons attached at all. I also always turn it off like a traditional console every time. Could be helping it a little.
Even after owning my previous Switch before update to the v2 Switch hidden revision I never had breaks or cracks other then the Joy-Cons that my nephew drop that broke the clips and never told me about. This was both handheld and docked usage on the first Switch.
@Magician well Switch Pro wont have cutting edge technology like PS5-XBX. It will be more of an evolution than a revolution, Switch + not Switch 2. Doubt it will have same hardware shortage
I got my Switch on Launch Day, no scratches, no drift, no cracks, thousands of play hours.
Decades ago when I was in 1st grade and I asked my dad for a Game Boy, he told me I could have one, but if I broke it, he would not replace it. And ya know what? I still have it and it still works perfectly.
I am not trying to be rude to anyone. But from what I read and see online, a lot of people take more risks and are more careless with their expensive electronic toys. At least in my opinion.
I know accidents happen, they've happened to me too. But I often here about people shoving things in bags without a case, tossing them onto their beds or couches, even throwing controllers across the room to their friends, leaving them on the floor etc etc.
That sort of behavior is what breaks things. We're all human. So we make mistakes. But we should try to be careful with our things if we value them.
Sad to hear your Switch is falling apart. I remember when I was younger I had a DS stolen in a car robbery and a 3DS stolen in a house robbery. I lived in a pretty nice and safe neighborhood too so it was really surprising when those occurred. It's lame when handhelds fall apart or get lost.
That being said, I would definitely purchase a Switch Pro if it offers a substantial graphical/performance boost to games and possibly has a nicer display for handheld mode. No need for a higher resolution but that rumored OLED display would be awesome!
Of all the things we could give
@KateGray
a hard time about, I feel at odds having to stand up for myself, on a ‘how I am’ issue but here it is...
Kate claims to be all about the liminal, they writes beautifully and enchants us all with their near poetic level prose (on a humble gamer site!?) to elevate our thoughts vis-a-vis Samus’ shinespark in the escape sequence. Even I at first thought these uses indicated a way to have peace with certain areas, transitions, and windows that remain tumultuous in my soul.
Kate seems to be a friend in this passion electronica....BUT THEN~~ They called their switch “[he]” against the apparent style guide of NL. Some of you have gotten distracted on if their Switch use was/wasn’t abuse, if the system has/has no quality issues, all the while this use of metaphor from dog to hand held idolized phallic toy given by a self identified academic word smith (see, with warning, their graphic undertones in “ Feature: The Exquisite Liminality Of Zelda: Skyward Sword”)...
There is, of course, no connection here with determining if the switch is/isn’t X/Y/Z to the style guides/writers and it thus turning into a completely different issue for peep to bicker on all while leaving the real people to be used as fodder.
~~~
Love you Kate, the praise bits are real thoughts on your texts. Thanks for writing for us!
@dimi - Oh I don't know about that. If the Switch Pro is as powerful as a base PS4 I would qualify that as "cutting edge" technology. And the semiconductor shortage is hitting all technology sectors hard, not just video games. So yes, the supply issues will continue for quite a while. https://www.theverge.com/2021/3/30/22358256/apple-supplier-foxconn-parts-shortages-chips-2022
Mine is acutally 100%
I have played it so much that my Switch Lite is not holding a full charge anymore.
@Magician same goes for ps5 too lol
@dont_simp_for_them Exactly! There always has to be some comment like that makes you wonder why they say anything at all. That can literally happen in a bag with heavy traveling the case splits are technically a defect of sorts the metal can't handle the heat caused by old thermal paste and heavy usage. My fan is on the fritz new paste helped a little but barley on my launch switch the V2 has fared better for now but give it time. Pro has to happen I saw a comment of someone mentioning a year till switch 2 so they will wait ha they have literally NO interest in making a true successor yet not while this one is still selling so well.
@anoyonmus same, we really must be one of the lucky ones, although I use portable only and have mine in a case it's still in considerable good condition
My OG Switch is still going strong. Got a small scratch on screen that's only visible under certain light or scenes but other than that, zero issues.
@Dr_G_Lemaitre Either smoke less weed or smoke more. Can't tell which it is.
I'm tired of the decreased battery capacity of my 2017 Switch, and don't want to by a V2 console if something better is releasing this year.
My switch fan whirrs even while playing mario's picross on the super nintendo, it's worrying.
I still contend that the Wii U Gamepad was the best controller ever released. It was incredibly comfortable (for me) and I liked the placement of the analog sticks.
Also, I really wish Nintendo would release a dedicated home console again. I don't care if it's portable or not.
I do recognize I'm in the minority with these opinions.
@huyi yeah I keep my switch really carefully
As someone who has a N64, GBA, GameCube, DS (Original and lite), Wii, 3DS and Wii-u, I will not buy a Switch. I would like to, but I’m not willing to throw money (and time) away on Joycons that don’t work. In no circumstances would I buy a Switch lite. At least with a regular switch you can use another controller when the joycons break. Nintendo has simply gone too far for me now.
Also, don’t expect Nintendo to fix the joycon drift on any Switch Pro. Nintendo can be relied upon to disappoint when it comes to things like this.
@TSR3 I agree. I’m just worried that they take the same approach they took with the new 3ds family of system and make some games exclusives to the new system. Not being able to play some of the new games on my brand new switch would be very disappointing... I doubt they would do it, but you never know...
@chardir Well I’m too much of a ***** because I would probably make a mistake and ruin them forever
I hear you, man. My launch unit is worse for wear, too. I dropped it a couple times because I'm a total butterfingers and a large crack is running down the back corner; you can totally peek at the device's insides it's that big. The grill over the fan is also not there anymore. So yeah, I'm in need of a replacement unit. I'm sort of holding out for this "pro" model that probably doesn't even exist, but I don't have a 4K TV, so I wouldn't even be able to fully utilize it. Probably a waste of money. That new Switch Lite colour is really tempting, but I like playing on the TV on weekends.
Don't buy a Switch lite to replace it! Nobody should buy a Switch lite, it's the silliest idea Nintendo have ever come up with. Already acknowledging that games only work properly on TV with a pro controller, and then to consider a version of the Switch that can't be used that way...
@N64-ROX "Already acknowledging that games only work properly on TV with a pro controller" No one acknowledged that. A handful of people seem to be convinced that (A) everyone uses their Switch docked or (B) everyone uses their Switch undocked, and they're both wrong.
@tseliot
Yes! Thanks for bring some humor in too. I know my sillies are a bit dry. ~~~ you know it could be a superposition of both more weed (M) and less (L)!
Yes, Nintendo. Please release a vaporware rumor thing that has no evidence but people keeps repeating ad nauseum waiting that it will became true rolls eyes
I don't understand the "wheezing just by booting up Picross" comment. Your Switch is damaged? Because mine loads stuff lightning fast and without a hitch. Very happy camper performance wise here, even though I wouldn't mind the ability to play higher fidelity games in the future.
“Switch Pro” is not a real product name nor does it even exist, why are we using it in headlines like it is?
@tseliot
Ps
You surely parse my every word with your username-name-sake!
Now, which way should my “footfalls echo“ to greater views of the liminal, or subliminal on that weed thing...
TS Eliot’s work is worth a read and doesn’t fit a reductionist label, sort of a theme I’m going on...
To be fair to Nintendo, this woman sounds like an absolute calamity. Look after your stuff 😂
Yeah I can't wait to fork over another 300 bucks to Nintendo so I can play ports of 4 year old games I already own!
I've dropped my switch at least three times and it hasn't begun to chip. Drift is a pain though, I wish Nintendo would find a manufacturer with decent parts for the sticks.
I fixed my joycon drift using electronic switch cleaner, worked an absolute treat! There were some great videos on YouTube on it.
@Moistnado the screws they used to put together the switch are absolutely horrendous. Worst screws I’ve ever encountered.
It's not gonna be called Switch Pro if it's a true next-gen Switch. Nintendo is not known to copy ideas from others. I'd be very happy if the rumor were true, stating it'd be named Super Nintendo Switch.
Imagine if cordless power tools had built in and non-serviceable batteries instead of normal common sense modular battery packs? There would be murders. Tablets, phones, all-in-one computers and now handheld video games are all living in a strange fantasy world where this bs is supposedly ok. Except..it’s not a fantasy...the consumers are somehow ok with this.
@CheekyZelda Well, if the sticks don't work I'd consider them ruined already. Almost every component is available cheaply online so if you do damage something else it's probably still fixable. (Though it's also worth checking with Nintendo if they'll fix drift for free anyway)
I sometimes feel like I'm the only one not wanting a "Pro" model but an actual successor.
Also, to the people giving the author a hard time: while it does seem like she hasn't been the most cautious of owners, it should be logic for people to reach the conclusion that quality varies from model to model as quality control clearly isn't very strict with most electronics. Also, variables like temperature, dust and other things affect the lifespan.
It's really funny in a sad way to see that writers can't win. If they praise a product, they are "fanboys". If they criticize it, they are also wrong.
Honestly, dudes, raise your hand if you can guarantee me that the Switch is even close to be as durable and well done with the proper quality control as a Game Boy, a Super Nintendo or a Gamecube. Let's bet 100 dollars if you are so sure.
Seriously guys, not everything is black and white. Gray exists. The article is clearly based on personal experience for god's sake. It's not like you can't criticize the article and think differently but I think some of you don't even read what you write.
"My Switch is in mint condition and built perfectly so clearly all of those millions of consoles out there are too and you just suck at taking care of it!"
That's pretty much what you write. Hell, if you don't trust how the writer handled her console, just see that many, many similar experiences from different users also happened here and on other sites. Of course they are a minority otherwise this console would be much more criticized but still, they are a lot of cases. Enough to, just from considering probabilities, having many people with damaged and malfunctioning consoles regardless of taking good care of them.
I mostly play dock. I got a launch switch and noticed that the left joy con is starting to bubble
Wow that sucks. My Wii from 2008 is still going like new, use it nearly every day.
My o3DS is showing some signs of wear after throwing it about, but it still works great.
My Switch is alive and well. If you're Switch is on its last leg, it may be time to buy a new one.
If Nintendo would release a Switch with sturdier parts, consumers would have to cough up a chunk more than +/- 300€ for it.
You can't expect sturdiness the likes of older consoles, while having more modern and sensitive parts, paying basically the same price (without taking inflation in account).
Translates as "since you made a product that can barely last the length of its own generation, please, let me spend MORE money on a new one to reward your incompetence"
I know you're a Nintendo centered site but that doesn't mean you have to constantly shill for them.
I plan on getting the "Switch Pro" too, when it comes out. But I have a launch Switch, from Day 1, and it's still going strong. Runs smooth. Vent slates are still perfectly intake. No cracking or anything anywhere. No bending or heat warping, which I've read about too. Mine still looks new and performs perfectly. And I play in handheld mode 99% of the time. I only play docked when I go to friend's places and play there. But, since the pandemic, haven't gone to a lot of friend's places. But also, they now have their own Switch's too. So, even if I do go over, they have theirs docked. So, I don't play mine docked much. At home, I'm 100% handheld, to keep my tv free so I can watch something on tv while playing games on my Switch. I travel a lot too, and I play in cars, and on trains, and in planes. I take my Switch with me everywhere. My Switch gets played every single day. I have tons and tons of games with hundreds of hours each. Several with over 300 hours. I have over 320 games, both digital and physical. I play all of the time. Yet, my Switch still runs perfectly. It looks perfect still. Even my screen protector doesn't have any scratches on it. I look at your pics, and I wonder, are you dropping it, or squeezing really hard, or something. You don't "Rage Quit" and throw it across the room, do you? I've easily put several thousand hours into my Switch already, and its still in perfect condition, after thousands of hours of playtime. So, it feels like there's something you're not telling us about yours. Tho, I do have 5 pairs of Joy Cons, plus 2 Pro Controllers, plus 2 SNES controllers and 2 NES controllers. But only 2 of the 10 Joy Cons have "JoyCon Drift". The other 8 are perfectly good still. I also use the Breath of the Wild travel case that came with the Special Edition. It has a hard rubber outer case, and I use the 'pouch' inside not for controllers and cords, but instead, I put all of the remaning loose Switch game cartdriges in there. It comes with a flap with game holder spots, which I put with the games that I most want to play (at the time), and the rest i put in the pouch, with all of the microfiber towels that I got from the DS, 3DS, Wii U, and Switch, from different things, that I use to "clog" the opening of the pouch to prevent the games from falling out. So, everything is pretty secure, and traveling I have no problem, as everything is well protected. Maybe that's it, maybe you're not well protecting your Switch when you travel. Something. But even with high high usage, your Switch should still be in better condition than it is in.
My launch-day Switch died almost a year ago. Not sure if was natural causes or if its from some of the power problems I had in my house that weekend.
This was a couple months after getting Animal Crossing and both my brother and I lost our island because it was before the cloud backup was added to the game. On top of that, all of the repair depots were shut down and getting a new switch or a new mainboard for one was near impossible.
I actually decided that I would get into making my own repairs and invested in soldering equipment. Found out what chip needed replaced, replaced it and...nearly got it working. Won't go into details but for weeks I tried to save our island but had to give up and was able to score a new switch using brickseek.
After 2 years? So much for that "nintendo seal of quality"
Good luck getting your hands on one when it does release. Scalper bots gonna be on these things like ... scalpers on shoes...
My Switch is unable to be played in docked mode for long periods of time(except for Shovel Knight Showdown for some reason). It's able to play for a few minutes then the TV screen goes black. This issue started in the beginning of March of this year.
@Kimyonaakuma Mine too, bar some friction marks from when my hands sit, along with the obligatory joy-con drift - which I have remedied with a Pro Controller. I prefer the big screen anyway.
So we bought the first switch around Christmas 20I7. We have delt with drift, 4 pair of joy con and a couple pro controller later we had to replace the dock. Bow I have recently forked over almost 400$ on the mario edition switch bundle 🙄 while the original switch is still operable I feel it will go out any moment. Hopefully it will be a smooth transition to the new switch as far as switch online account and the parental controls
I have three switches and they have all been fine. We have issues here and there, but the drifting has been the worse one. My 10 year old uses the switch I bought at launch and it doesn't have cracks or anything.
You make enough money to buy another Nintendo Switch, also do not rush a incomplete product that requires technical time to build precisely to work well for the world, not JUST FOR YOU. P.S. here is a phrase to remember incase you forgotten "Try to HAVE PATIENCE".
@dimi love how people try to use words to down play a revolution when Switch goes 4K they get scared. Something small as Switch can 4K and that is blasphemous as though only this poster knows it all but knows nothing in the end.
@Face89 Let another though pass you by They were already with the launch of v2 was developing Switch 2 phase already. You think they were waiting til now to start making another Switch. It takes time from Switch 2 drawings to come to production can take years and if you consider 2017 was when it was released you would strategize making a newer more Powerful version in it's Life expansion. If anyone never thought this then they are the reason they aren't working in the Gaming industry. You think ahead what is coming not look backwards or pigeon hole yourself to tech limits-you push the envelope. This is why Switch for how underpower it is sells because it can do it without resorting to Hey look at me - how PowerFul I am to sell.
I'm still on my day one Switch, and frankly it has no right to still be performing as well as it is... 200 hours of BotW, 400 hours of AC, 80 hours of MK - AND a further 600 across another 50+ games. (Yea, lockdown happened). But seriously, I played some serious Goldeneye multiplayer on the 64, but didn't clock up anywhere near these hours. The fact Switch is portable too - it's staggering.
Even the battery life? I don't know what juice Nintendo put in the battery, but it puts Samsung and Apple to shame.
From the sounds of it, she needs to change the thermal paste.
@SwitchForce hi. No need for hostility, i'm free to make a prediction like you do. Time will tell who's more right than wrong
Dude, if you need it for work you can just buy a new one and write it off as a business expense.
Yeah, I have the same issues with my dog!
@KateGray Understand where you're coming from, and I do apologize but my point stands: You wanting more advanced hardware because yours is worn out. Sounds like the Switch Lite would be a much better fit for your traveling lifestyle. With shortages, bots, increasing prices on everything, I'd hate for Nintendo to crush their own momentum right now when there isn't anything out there that pushes the boundary right now in portable tech.
@jrb363 It would have been a great thing to have while I was travelling! Now, I'm much more sedentary, and I got myself a new dock - I very rarely take my Switch outside any more
I hope there will be a change in how nintendo approaches the new switch. They had enough time for feedback and where to fix and improve things.
I'd like to see them add things such as bluetooth, ingame voicechat (discord??), LTE and keep good things such as the TV dock and easy access to the internals.
Owning many handhelds now, i still like the PSP and PSV way more in my hands. Especially the slider on the PSP beats the analog sticks when playing portable/handheld.
Ergonomics and material feel is the major thing i'm concerned about with the next switch. Performance will probably be fine, but if the mess up the handheld feel for me, might aswell sell me something like a PSV TV switch version.
@KateGray, probably an unpopular opinion, but I think the "pro" model people are clamoring for isn't going to be the "pro" that is going to be released. While I understand that most people quote the Bloomberg article for what the "New" Switch will be, which I wouldn't be surprised to a name similar to the 3ds upgrade, that article mostly just shows a bump in the screen quality and 4k capability. This alludes to what I think we'll really be getting in 2021. A 4K dock, with it's own 4K scaling hardware, that is backwards compatible to the Switch.
So tired of hearing these "leaks" after nintendo said there will be no switch pro this year, just like they did laat year & it didn't come out. Why would they lie?
@twztid13 IIRC, they never said specifically that there wouldn't be any new hardware they just said they had "nothing to announce". Nintendo (and every other hardware manufacturer) will never reveal their plans until they're ready. Hundreds of millions of dollars is at stake and everything is planned and timed months (or years) in advance. They're not going to admit there's new hardware when they still want you to buy the old hardware, and they're not going to change their carefully designed launch strategy because of some random journalist.
The wife wants to play mario kart but I refuse to buy a switch now. Probably have to wait another year for upgrade though.
No issues with my OG switch. For me to even think of getting a pro model it would need to be a considerable advancement with the bells and whistles added. Native headset connectivity etc.
My switch is collecting dust. Only games im wanting to play is botw 2 & metroid 4, if they ever get released
Otherwise, my wiiu still going strong and is main console i turn on (bc games like wii, n64 snes &gba) keep me going
@kate however good this article is, I read it weeks ago. Why is it now showing up as a new article?
Is it dead already? I'm honestly worried about your switch, keep us posted. I'm sending thoughts and prayers.
Nintendo won't call it a switch pro, however, it will be named the NEW Nintendo SWITCH XL
I got 2 Switch, one being my primary and the other as secondary for multiplayer or downloading import titles from other regions. Won't be replacing both any time soon but if Switch Pro ever launch I'll be getting that and make that one the primary while the other two as secondary.
@Magician PS5 normal stock rate now estimated at June 2022, another year away, seems utterly crazy, but this is now related to hardware shortages, just as it is with the XSX, although slightly less in that regard.
You guys at Nintendolife must think if you keep posting articles about it Nintendo will suddenly announce this alleged switch pro. If such a thing even exists I can just about guarantee it's not going to be called switch pro. That name isn't Nintendo enough.
My Switch Lite has never given me problems, and I've had it since it launched.
@Xylnox @norwichred @EVIL-C There's a new video on the NL youtube channel featuring Kate and her Switch
Please buy a new switch so they announce the switch pro!
@chardir The back cover is about as easy as it gets. Likewise the battery (which the most likely source of swelling). Even the microSD reader was an easy job.
My switch is perfectly fine. Really ready for a pro model though. I just cant believe it would release this year. I’m planning on next year. I have a lot of games I still want to play so no rush for me.
The shell of my launch Switch cracked, so I bought a 3rd party shell. This has survived, but then the front shell, that I don't think I can get a replacement for, started to crack. My switch hums and groans, as if the fan is struggling. I am going to wait until the day it breaks before getting a replacement, because I would rather have a Switch Pro. The Switch is just too flimsy and poor quality in it's construction. I would also like a Switch that can run Link's Awakening and Breath of the Wild without slowdown, but this is a separate issue.
@AndrewR Removing and replacing the back cover was a nightmare because the screw heads crumble as you screw them in and out.
@Rpg-lover Maybe a Switch Micro? I'd rather have a pocket sized Switch hat makes me squint and cramps my hands.
@Moistnado if you do a lot of stuff like that, I really recommend the ifixit tool kit - it makes life so much easier as right sized head is invariably in there.
@AndrewR I think the replacement screws are made of magnesium. I remember seeing a video where Alex tried to re-shell some joycon and had the same issues. I was super careful but the screws fell to pieces.
Uh Yeah, I'm in the exact same boat! My household owns 3 systems. All purchased around launch. 2 of the 3 are having major drift issues. 1 of the 3 is having issues playing certain online games despite the fact that all three are connected and setup exactly the same. 1 of the 3 has blown speakers. All three are in perfect physical condition, are kept in cases when not being used, and have never been dropped.
I personally love the Switch, but I also feel that this is the poorest built system that Nintendo has ever built. I want to hold out on a Switch Pro because I too feel it will remedy most of our issues. However, I'm worried that with current sales going strong, there's no real need to release the Pro Model yet. I'm also worried that as soon as I buy $80 Joy-Cons or a new system, Nintendo will announce the new system.
For now, I'm going to hold out until E3. At the same time, I've made the commitment to not purchase any new games until then. This is killing me because I soooo want Monster Hunter but I refuse to play with poorly made Joy-cons.
@twztid13 If they announced a new upgraded Switch today, wouldn't that kind of squash the sales of the current systems that they can't keep stocked?
Whoa...deja vu all over again.
@Moistnado I had similar issues with my 3ds - it's getting harder to find parts for it too.
I’ve had my Switch since launch and have put hundreds of hours into it, and had 6 different Joy-Con (my Switch was even hit by a truck that smashed through my house, while I was holding it!), and I still have not experienced Joy-Con drift a single time. I don’t get it.
I'm a broken record here but I'd rather have Nintendo make a Switch 2 instead of a Switch Pro. Developers would still have to support the original model so we're not going to see the performance/resolution boost people are expecting. If the Switch 2 can be on par with the Xbox One we'll probably keep getting current gen ports.
That Switch is just fine. Did you know that your Nintendo 64 probably has 20+ years of spider eggs and dust inside it? Now you know.
@twztid13 I seem to recall Nintendo denying the Switch Lite was real until they announced it. If they think sales of current models will be affected, they'll lie about it. And they've lied about other things as well.
I hope all my controllers (including a drum and fight stick) still work on the next console...
@norwichred It was reposted yesterday because the video is now included.
My 4 year old Switch fan broke.
I paid €90 to get it replaced just 2 weeks ago.
I also cannot wait for the Switch 2. There won't be a pro this far into the lifespan it is going to be a full generation not a pro. I am going to keep saying it lmao. They may have another silent revision but the next gen Switch is what they have been developing and very likely on an enhaced Xavier SoC.
I watched the video. So, what color Switch did Kate end up getting? Forgive me if I missed it.
@sdelfin they finagled words around the lite, so u can go back & read their comments & make sense of it. This, they said there's no system coming out this year, basically.
@Jokerwolf this. They have specifically said no new system this year, regardless of what u want to call it. I would bet it will be a new version another year before there will be an upgrade like a pro.
@veesonic Exactly, take it from all of us who bought a new nintendo 3ds for 1 game (tho a handful of crap eshop titles also were exclusive to it). A pro is not a good idea. People keep wanting to wish it into existence, but fail to realize it won't be like they hope. It will be all "enhanced for switch pro" crap & every new title will be required to support the old console & be handicapped. It's like if u bought a series x & all u get to play are "enhanced" ports....oh wait, that's reality. If u did that, sure u have faster loading times, but that's it. And "the medium", lol.
If you have rip and tears on your Switch then that just means you being careless and unnecessarily rough with it by tossing it around or not packing it properly during travels (or your kids are just being kids) so time ain't have nothing to do with it and no amounts of Switch "Pro" systems is gonna hide that, learn to take better care of it yourself!
@twztid13 @veesonic
Switch games have a lot of room for improvement even if it is just about upgrading the resolution or better overall performance.
I seriously doubt that a Switch 2 could be anything more than that either.
Let's just say a Switch Pro could play all the current games in native 4k/60fps (tv mode). For the game developers this would still be very easy to implement (even as a patch) if the console just has enough horsepower.
But the hardware required to just achieve that seems unrealistic while maintaining a healthy price point that people are willing to pay, unless the Switch Pro ditches the mobility.
So if a Switch Pro can't realistically be powerful enough to support even simple upgrades for existing games to their fullest, what would the advantage of a Switch 2 be?
Just like the Switch Pro, the Switch 2 could have as powerful as possible hardware without being too expensive, so both consoles would then be on the same level as well.
This means the Switch 2 would essentially still just be able to play games on the same graphical level as the current Switch 1, but with higher resolution or performance.
In that case there wouldn't be any difference between a Switch 2 or a Switch Pro.
Why do people want a Switch Pro? Simple, they want as much of those upgrades as possible and a Switch 2 wouldn't be able to do more than that anyway. Hardware just isn't there yet.
Basically, all of this is because Switch 1 struggles with performance in some games and at the same time 4k becoming the standard resolution for games.
You need far better hardware than the current Switch just to achieve that and there is no reason why such a Switch wouldn't just play the same games as the old Switch just with better resolution/performance.
There is barely any work involved for devs to support both systems in that case.
All of this, of course, is only correct as long as the Switch 2 truely is only a hardware upgrade and not a different kind of system. In that case we have a completely different discussion.
I’ve had my V2 model since December of 2019.
No hardware issues, no drift with joycon.
That said, my usage case is 99% docked play with a Pro Controller. I can count on two hands how many times I’ve actually played it in handheld mode.
I don’t even keep a screen protected on it. I have the Zelda brown leather case for when I do actually take it places. And even then, the only place I’ll play handheld is in my car. I’m not risking dropping it.
IMO, the regular switch isn’t a good handheld console. It can do it, but it’s far too wide and the joycons are cramped beyond belief. I can play it for twenty minutes top before my wrists start to hurt. That said, it’s fine when I’m sitting in my car and that’s only when I know I’m going to have to wait on somebody and I’ve got twenty minutes to spare.
My old DS Lite was a proper handheld, and it never left my side. It went with me everywhere.
@dkxcalibur did it with new 3ds? They would never announce it this early, sure, but they have specifically said no new system will be released this year. Why would they lie? Would u trust a liar in the future? They left themselves wiggle room w their statements in the past. This seemed unequivocal. Also, did switch lite sales affect the regular switch sales? I don't know the answer, but i honestly doubt it did much.
My joycons have wear that you notice, if you use them. Predominantly, it is right now only the left that suffers, and primarily from drift. The right is still usable for tabletop mode, if my family, and/or I am watching something on tv.
Switch battery life is good for me, however I do not take my Switch out of my house, 98% of the time. I play in all 3 modes, predominantly docked, unless I'm multitasking.
Storage isn't really an issue for me, since I prefer physical carts/cards over digital downloads.
Nintendo should modify their account system. In a standard scenario, you need your original 3DS, WU, or Switch to transfer account data to a new console. Also, a big hindrance to digital titles are that I can't sell the license for the title later.
Over the course of time, my Switch fan is a smidge more noticeable to my ears, but nothing noteworthy. It does get pretty warm, after a good long playthrough, but I would expect that.
Overall, a lot of wear, and tear issues are just based on how often, and in the predominant environment a person uses their Switch.
I think the problem many people have is what Kate mentioned in the article: As soon as they decide to purchase a console, Nintendo will announce a new model, that features upgrades. I would say just remember a console lifespan is around 4-6yrs. Longer, if a co. can profit off of it, as presumably was the case with the 3DS. Knowing this, I would also say to people with a failing console, just be patient, and Nintendo will eventually reveal their proverbial cards, either by choice, or forced by competition.
@twztid13 Great points. I'm still waiting until E3.....just in case!
@Kirgo look a new 3ds, that's a case study for u & u will find all ur answers there. If it's only for tv mode upgrades, that's not worth it. They invested in a complete system that left that out, but not a system like i would prefer that was only tv mode & no handheld that would be cheaper. That must mean they value the handheld market more, IMHO. Therefore an iteration that only improved on tv mode specs would be a waste if time if most of their players value handheld over anything else. If what u are claiming is so "easy", why didn't it happen w new 3ds? No one made games that were better. They put a stamp on the front of the box & that's about it. Maybe a 5% faster loading times which took no effort from devs, as that was a result of the hardware. No devs want to take on extra costs & have a separate team to design for 2 different iterations of the same system. With a new switch, they wouldn't be bound to the old specs when developing a new game. Yes, for a time they would probably develop for both because of the install base of OG switch, but after people buy the new system & they stopped developing titles for the OG switch, like what happens on any new generation of consoles, the new switch would benefit greatly. If it were simply a pro, the games would always be limited by the older hardware because every game would have to support it. That's not the case of it were a completely new system. New 3ds shows exactly how i think a switch pro would do in reality, outside of people's wants & desires. It sounds good, but devs will never be able to completely use all of it's new power while bound to the older hardware. If all it would be is resolution & frame rate increases, it's not worth the time, imo & just because a few if the hardcore gamers would upgrade, the masses (where all the money is made) would be confused like w the Wii U & it would sell horribly, imo. So if Nintendo learned anything from the wii u & new 3ds, they will not make a new iteration of switch & wait to make an entirely new system that keeps the design of switch. DS to 3DS is the right way to give us a better switch, not 3ds to new 3ds.
My switch is in near perfect condition after 2 years, but I only play in docked mode with Pro Controllers.
I hate the Joycons. Barely used em at all, sold em on ebay.
If they released a tv-only version of the Switch and knocked off $100 I'd be all over that.
@Goofus same & the fact they don't shows that most of their players value the handheld, because they have actually released a system that completely removed tv mode. Since this is the case, a switch pro would be akin to a new 3ds...a waste of time & effort because no devs will go out of their way to do anything meaningful w the extra power & it will confuse the casual gamers & their parents,,which is where the insane amounts of $$$ comes from, not from us hardcore gamers who frequent gaming sites. I hope they learned these lessons from wii u & new 3ds.
This article is no less overwrought than when it was first published.
@twztid13
I honestly have to ask whether you have actually read what I wrote.
I already countered most of what you just said...
But ok, the comparison with the new 3DS is new, so let's get at that:
First of all, you are selling the new 3DS massively short, as there are a lot of games with vastly improved performance compared to the standard model, plus improved 3D. That 3D alone wasn't even available in a lot of later games if you only had the old model.
Playing on the old 3DS was almost painfull on quite a few later games, I can talk from experience (ever tried Hyrule Warriors on the old model for example?).
If you don't care about these enhancements, that is fine, it is your opinion. You should be aware though, that there are tons of people who would take an upgrade like the new 3DS in a haertbeat, including me.
Secondly: I have no idea why you are comparing the 3DS with the Switch when the situation is completely different. The Switch has a massive upgrade potential even if just with the resolution alone and as a partly home console standards like higher resolutions are being expected of a new model, whether it is a Switch Pro or a Switch 2. The new 3DS was not in that kind of position.
Another thing to mention: You said I was specifically talking about the home portion part of the Switch, which you say is not as relevant for some reason. I honestly don't even want to get into that discussion, because it is irrelevant for my argument anyway. I talked about the home console part as a simple example, because I didn't want to write "home this and portable that" in every sentence. My entire argument works with the portable part of the Switch as well.
As for the rest: Maybe we can get further if I ask you a question first: What exactly do you think we would get from a Switch 2?
And I do want a bit of detail here, what kind of games that couldn't be on the regular Switch and in what resolution and with what framerate.
For example: "PS5 games in 1080p 30 fps while in handheld" would be a valid answer to this question.
I am honestly not sure what you are expecting, that is why I am asking.
Why not just use a friend or family member who lives in the UK to send your switch to, mail it to NIntendo UK from there, they fix it, ship it back to the UK friend, then ship it to you in Canada? That's what I would do, not write an overblown article about it. Surely this writer must have 1 friend in their home country?
Or get a new one and claim it at tax time as a work expense. You can work from home; a privileged luxury. In fact, Canada just introduced new tax breaks for stay at home workers for 2020. Or find a deal on a decent used unit? I want that Super Switch as much as the next Nintendo fan, but come on, Kate...
@Kirgo the thing is the X1 chip set is almost a decade old they've iterated upon it seven generations now, and while they've only been used for mostly AI purposes they are plenty powerful enough to blow away the X1 chip, if they go with Xavier you're looking at something as powerful as the PS4 Pro potentially in a handheld, and AI upscaling is going to change how we game anyway.
@Jokerwolf
Do you have a source for that?
I never heard of Xavier being even nearly that potent, nor do I have ever heard if the chip is even effectively usable for games.
I am not too knowledgable with this chip in particular though, so I might have missed something.
@Kirgo with AI upscaling they don't need to render at hogher than 1080p. Also I don't think it is Xavier since there was a report a few years ago where it aaid nvidia was making a custom SoC for Nintendo so it will be something no one has seen yet.
You're playing Story of Seasons??
@Jokerwolf
Yes, I understand the upscaling part, that is exactly what I am hoping for in a Pro model.
The PS4 Pro comparison seems a bit much for a mobile SoC though, at least while maintaining a reasonable price.
@Kirgo thats what I am saying though even 720 can upscale to 4k and the untrained eye can't tell it is happening so as long as they can port an engine to it they only have to natively render at 720 which is easy to do with nvidias mobile tech.
@Jokerwolf So what you want to say is, you would prefer a Switch 2 that can run, let's say ported PS5 games in 720p to then AI upscale it to 4k?
I guess you can attempt to do that, I fear that the games would be worse in a similar way as PS4 ports are on the current Switch, while this new Switch could be kind of expensive. I personally think that is not worth it.
I would not even guarantee that this is yet possible, PS5 and Series X are a whole different behemoth...
I would also strongly contest the claim that AI upscaling from 720p -> 4k is hard to notice for the untrained eye. There are limits to this and 720p is definitly beyond that limit for me, from all that I have seen (Heck, I can see differences when upscaling from 1080p compared to real4k, it isn't perfect... Though I could live with that in a Switch. 720p though? Eh...).
I don't have any issues with my Switch console. My joy cons also don't suffer from the drift issues gamers seem to have.
Give me some details on the "Pro" version first before I buy please. ^^
@Kirgo I'm sure however Nintendo goes about this it will be fine, the only reason why the next gen systems need the power they have is so they can natively render at 4K in the first place, game development hasn't been advanced by it that much.
@Jokerwolf
I agree with that, though raytracing also needs to be mentioned. That costs a lot of performance.
It's also not like I would have a problem with a Switch 2 compared to a Pro, I just think it is still a bit early for a successor like that to be realistic.
In any way, if the new system is worth it, I will buy it, otherwise I won't. In the end that is all there is to it.
@Kirgo When u start out with a flat out lie, I can't take u seriously. I have owned every version of the 3ds & every version could play every game in 3d, new 3ds had a single game, xenoblade chronicles 3ds version, that required new 3ds. The only other games that required new 3ds were digital games on eshop, but u must have ignored that part of my previous comments. No game that had 3d on new 3ds didn't have it on older 3ds models. I had something derogatory to say but deleted it & will leave this conversation here & everyone else will understand why. Enjoy waiting for a switch pro.
@Kirgo I doubt there will be Ray tracing, that'll likely be the only major trade-off.
Not sure how Kate has managed to get her Switch in such a state, I gave my launch model to my sister when Animal crossing came out and it's still not got a mark on it.
So far, the only issue I've had with my Switch was control stick drift on a left Joy-Con I bought separately from the Switch about a year ago, and that was mostly fixed after I sent it in. I've only had my Switch for a couple of years though. If the damn thing can't even last half a decade, I doubt I'll be buying more Nintendo products.
Between this article and the comments, I've never been more glad to not have the time to play games. You all expect the world and then some from every creator is if it's something owed to you. "How dare they not have color options" and other "needed" features, etc. You should all be ashamed of how selfish and greedy you all are.
And when they announce it, you'll all complain that it doesn't have the X, Y and Z that the twitter mob and articles like this tell you are necessary.
Nobody owes you a damn thing, stop acting like it. (The royal you. While I disagree with the author and some commenters, this is less target and more my general rage at these situations and attitudes surrounding literally everything in gaming right now).
@TSR3 Oh, ha Somehow, I skipped right past that. Heh
This is one reason my Switch mostly stays in the dock and when it does hit the road it travels in a sturdy carry case.
@tektite_captain they actually said there is no new model planned. Nothing about an announcement. If it wasn't planned in February, it's not coming out in November, because it can't go from conception to market that fast. Nothing anyone says will convince anyone wishing for this so just wait & see & maybe you can argue this with someone again next year, just like you people did last year.
@twztid13 Lol, do you really believe there is no new Nintendo Switch model being planned? It's been planned since the day the original Switch launched. The only question is when it will be launched, which may or may not be this year.
@Moistnado a switch micro? Are you kidding me 😀, That will make ur eyes bleed to see every details on screen, as you have already mentioned! It makes u squint & cramps won't that be a big disadvantage to you or other people 🤔? Or maybe I am not getting the sarcasm.
Replacing the joystick on a JoyCon is very, very easy. Buy a small set of tools to open the case (one time, cheap purchase) and a new joystick (you can find those really cheap too). Watch a tutorial if ya need, though I did it without. It really is easy, and much cheaper than a new JoyCon. For under 50 dollars you can repair several.
@Jokerwolf
Sure, I only wanted to add to the new gen consoles mainly using their hardware for 4k. Ray tracing ist also an important factor.
I don't mean the Switch in that context at all.
@twztid13
OK then, try to play Hyrule Warriors on the old 3DS with 3D on. Good luck, but it does not work unless they somehow patched it.
Not that it matters in that case, because the performance on the old 3DS is so horrible that you wouldn't want to play on that system anyway.
Tbf I wrote "a lot of games", which went too far, I apologise for that.
Performance upgrades are conmon on new 3DS though.
Had my Switch Since launch (replaced it only once when Nintendo gave me a lemon). Since then it's been running strong 4 years later.
I'd love a Switch Pro but my Switch isn't "dying" from it. Get a Switch Lite, take better care of your stuff, and be patient like the rest of us. This article just screams "melodramatic".
@Vapeguy me too.
@DevinRex indeed. Needed something to talk about, I guess. My OG Switch has zero issues. Docked and portable play. Had drift issues twice in 4 years. That's it! I put it in the case when I'm done. Hard to believe a Switch just falls apart with the owner not having SOMETHING to do with it
I'm pretty much in the same boat and begging Switch Pro happens soon.
What I don't expect: JoyCon drift will be past then. If Nintendo learned something then it's they can sell broken hardware over years with no consequences.
So what I expect: I'll buy a Switch Pro day 1 for even more broken hardware.
@Coxula The thing is they are working on their nextgen Switch, a pro is only going to slow down their progress if they go that route. Going a full generational leap is the only thing that makes sense at this point and they can leave all the issues with the OG Switch behind since it was rushed to market to make up for the failure of the Wii U in the first place.
I really hope that if/when they release a switch pro they have a way for people who have the og switch to have 4k support. Like when you hook it up to a buffed up doc you get 4k. i mean they are kinda already do something like that. In doom eternal the framerate drops to 15 fps when in handheld when watching a cutscene, but remain at 30fps when docked. and in bowser's fury the framerate drops from 60 to 30 fps in handheld mode.
I'll be ready as the Switch Pro comes along...
Yeah I have some big cracks on the back, my back is help tight with tape right now. My cartridge slot is not doing that well, it takes a lot of force to get the cartridge in. I had problems with stick issues on one joycon and multiple joycons would not pair when removed from the console. Nintendo fixed 2 of my joycons for free though luckily. Everything is still working ok enough right now but long term I'm not optimistic
@Kirgo It also is not too early for a successor, the Switch was rushed to market with multiple flaws and this is also a good chance to fix those with the next generation, also all games will be backwards compatible since they will be going with a brand new chipset specifically designed for the next switch for Nintendo by NVIDIA that is ARM based but significantly more powerful.
I was on your side with how much travel and use you get out of it in both your job and leisure until I realised you don't have a case XD
You're on your own there love
Though for the anywhere anytime mentality that Ninty are trying to push, maybe all consoles should come with a case for the tight asses who don't want to shell out the extra £££ for accessories (I don't even have a pro controller so I can kinda feel you there)
Though I did cheat a bit compared to how long you had yours. I had the OG switch until the LGPE edition came out and I swapped it for it. So even though I have owned a switch since Splatoon 2 launch (funny that's what I bought it for) I've only had this one since 2018 and dread to think how many hours I've had on it. It does travel with me (just to my mum's house) and I will admit I had to replace the Joycons just last week because of drift, but other than that, it's pretty much mint.
and yet, the biggest issue with my Nintendo Switch is somehow the screen became warped. it was most likely from heating issues. eventually the thing started to over heat and shut itself off every 15 to 20 minutes of game play so i ended up having to get a new one.
on the plus side; i have never had the joy-con drift problem, although one of my joy-cons arrived with a defective battery, but that was easily fixed.
if they release a Switch Pro model; i would either like it to be a dedicated console version or a better screen in which one have warping issues. i never use the damn thing in handheld mode, so it having a screen is useless for me; but either way the systems LCD should not have screen warping issues or an LCD that can cause the system to overheat.
Am in the same boat. My much loved Switch was beat up and for the life of me I can’t understand how it’s just fallen apart, after it spends most of its time in the dock!
Cracked air vent, missing screws, game cartridge reader failed, slight warp... and of course joycon drift on all my 4 controllers too.
Recently I had some things fixed, like replacing the housing, new game card reader and replaced the missing screws. So it looks decent again but I just didn’t want to hold onto it anymore, as it was the launch day switch with the poor battery life,
So I sold it last week and now impatiently waiting for the switch pro release!!!
If E3 comes and goes with no announcement of the Switch Pro, I’ll just buy the red box V2 switch.
I also don’t think Kate should be so apologetic, the switch hardware is trash!
