@SLIGEACH_EIRE TinyBuild served as publisher for those, not as a developer. The only game they developed internally is No Time To Explain (which is a pretty bad game admittedly). I also think that they've collected quite a fes pretty decent games over the past years. Not all of them are great, but there's some good stuff there.
That being said, the concerns over the ports are valid. Not that I care, I've already played the ones I care about on PC.
@Galenmereth Yeah, I don't like the new style either, regardless of the environment. I sort of wish they would have included an option to revert to the original art. Same goes for SMT:SJR It's not a dealbreaker, but it's a shame nonetheless.
I've become very fond of the 3DS over its lifespan, so I'm all for new games. I personally can't stand the idea of throwing out older consoles as soon as the next thing arrives. I play games from the 80's, 90's, 00's and 10's each year. If (good) new games get released on the 3DS in the future, I'll pick 'em up.
That being said, I've seen very little signs of new games actually being released, aside from the few that have been announced.
@Ryu_Niiyama While I've no reason to disbelieve him (as we've heard similar things from many other developers and Nintendo themselves), you're absolutely right about not being able to verify the story, that we don't know the details and I agree with you that I should treat it as such.
@Ryu_Niiyama I think he is a bit bitter about it, but I would be too, because the feedback is sort of vague. They don't want it, but it's not clear why. It's totally within Nintendo's right to do so, but it's hardly a satisfactory outcome for the developer in question. You can't even modify the game to fit the requirements.
During the Wii and Wii U era nobody really cared about Nintendo's arbitrary way of putting games on their store, because sales on the platform were probably going to be tiny anyway. Now that the Switch's eShop is enjoying some moderate succes, getting a game on the platform can be pretty import for the financial succes of your product. When that decision process seems, once again, rather arbitrary, it can be a frustrating venture indeed. And I totally get that.
For those that are saying they understand Nintendo and that it looks boring or whatever, keep in mind that the PC version of the game was very well received. It's not my kind of thing, but it looks like a high quality title within its relative niche. It's even making its way to the Vita...
@ilovetotourz
The region lock was a stoopid decision. Region-locked 3DS units are still available in stores, and are still produced. The region-lock will never go away on official firmware. Sounds pretty relevant to me.
@Mikemario
Don't worry, there's a very specific way in which succesful exploits are exposed to the public by hackers. The exploit has been patched a long time ago btw, this only works on 3.0.
Totally missed this update somehow. Great news indeed! I'm happy to see hacking on the Switch moving forward so fast.
Always a bit saddened to see the mindless naysayers here on NL. Everyone's entitled to his/her own opinion obviously, but 99% of the negative comments are about piracy, which this article isn't even about.
I salute the hackers that allowed me to freely use my legally lurchased NTSC 3DS games on my PAL system, and allowed me to use a microSD card on my Vita so I can stop deleting my legally purchased and downloaded games from my dreadful proprietary memory card.
@raisenv The first Yakuza was released in 2005. Shogun: Total War was released in 2000.
Hardly new hotness. 10 years is like a lifetime in this industry
What is nice to see is that Sega does remain somewhat commited to being a quality PC publisher, and for a Japanese company they've been doing pretty well, even publishing Relic and Creative Assembly's PC-exclusive games, and delivering high-quality ports of Bayonetta and Vanquish for example.
@Ralek85 I agree that there SHOULD be no doubt, but considering how companies like Capcom and Squeenix have been treating the west lately, I honestly can't say localizations are a guarantee these days. Look at MHXX, or the countless DQ games for 3DS that never left Japan or were released years after the initial release.
Really looking forward to this one. Definitely a major reason to pick up a Switch for me, if it turns out to be good (and I like pretty much all non-Persona SMT games).
I think the reason why I don't really dig mobile games is I play games not to waste time, but because I want to actively put time in a particular experience. I don't know if that difference is clear to everyone, but to me it is.
Nintendo's efforts so far seem pretty polished, but at its core they don't seem to differ that much from other games.
I definitely wouldn't call this incredible (Skyrim is a 2011 game, Disgaea 5 is an early 2015 game, 1-2 Switch, Sonic Forces and Fate/Extella aren't good games, we currently don't know if Xenoblade 2 will be any good), but it's still a very solid lineup. Kinda surprised to see NBA in there as well. Didn't know those games actually sell over there?
Having Odyssey as a launch title must be fun though
Illegally funneling of money between companies is something we've seen Kickstarter companies do quite a bit. Something for the Japanese tax agencies to investigate I suppose.
Quick question for everyone here. I haven't picked up the original SuMo game because I've been busy playing tons of other games in my backlog.
Ever since this was announced I've been wondering if I should pick up the originals or the Ultra versions. I don't like the sound of the new story, I don't care for the crappy minigames they seem to have introduced, I'm generally not fond over excessive fan-service and I REALLY don't like it when legendary Pokémon are thrown in your face like cheap toys.
Since this review doesn't provide a whole lot of answers, what do you guys think I should do?
Right. So this thing won't have a whole lot of games to play, because there aren't a whole lot of commercial games that A) Are optimised for the power something like a Pi 2/3 provides B) have ARM builds
Effectively the only games you'll be playing here are FOSS games, and you can play those on most other devices you own already. Playability of other games will also depend on the input API used for the buttons here.
Same goes for the emulators. You already have devices that run those emulators. This one doesn't even seem to have shoulder buttons, so say goodbye to SNES and GBA.
And that isn't even going the fact that this is a small company that has no experience putting things like this on the market.
Just pick up a 3DS for a bit more money, put Luma on it, and presto, you have a nice portable machine of decent build quality that plays DS/3DS games and allows you to use emulators while also having shoulder buttons.
It's a fun little idea, but I don't see the point.
@Heavyarms55 Yeah, absolutelt right. You need to have a HUGE amount of pocket change before you can even CONSIDER buying a 4K TV (I currently consider it the biggest waste of money I can imagine). It's actually quite hilarious when you consider that the PS4Pro doesn't even do native 4K rendering (it mostly does checkerboard upscaling).
In PC land, 4K is currently a pretty unrealistic target for hobbyist, considering most PC players usually want at least 60 fps. Right now, 60+fps@1440p on recent games is what you're usually aiming for on a high-end system.
@bloodycelt Considering how much Nintendo has struggled to get a solid line-up of games on, for example, the Wii U, I think the last thing they should do is fragment that library by introducing "New Switch Only" games.
Well they are saying "AT LEAST two years", so I don't think we have to worry yet. While I've never been a real fan of consoles (I enjoy playing on PC much more in general), I feel this console generation has been the absolute pits so far. What are consoles even about these days? My PS4 acts more like a cheap-ass broken PC than anything else. It has plenty of games, but so little of them actually interest me. Without Bloodborne, I think I wouldn't have picked up a console at all. Maybe Nioh would have pushed me over the edge eventually. Either way, most of my playtime the past years has been on my PC and 3DS. I honestly hope this generation keeps on going for quite a bit longer, cause its been eye-wateringly boring so far, and I don't want to see some new crappy piece of platic when this one doesn't even feel like it has taken off yet. And it would definitely be very sad to see an new machine now that we know mid-generations console-refresh cycles are officially a thing. Ugh. /rant
EDIT: I also can't imagine that Sony is eager to wipe the install base considering how slowly it sold over in Japan. In the west the PS4 sold like hotcakes, but it really took quite a while to get going over in the east. More than ever, I think its EXTEMELY dangerous to start a new classic console generation that retreads the old model, hoping that people buy it as usual. There were already signs that some publishers weren't very confident in this generation (it has been said that, for example, Square Enix was one of those), and I would imagine it hasn't exactly risen a whole lot these past years.
Let's see if it lasts 6 years this time around to begin with.
To me, those numbers seem pretty astronomical unless they're going to tap into previously untapped markets (i.e. other asian nations most likely). Currently I think it's mainly hype that's selling the thing. But that only gets you so far. We'll see.
I hope it does well of course, and I hope we'll see plenty of great software. I'm dying to play Super Mario Odyssey, but there isn't enough incentive to buy the system right now, especially at this price point.
@ThanosReXXX
That's some pretty funky logic though. You can't quite compare the 3DS to the Switch, as it has double the price point (sure, the 3DS was overpriced on launch but luckily came down quick), I don't see multiple Switch consoles in a single household, and I think NoA has generally failed give a good answer to the "is it a console or a portable?" question. Plenty of people won't see this as a "replacement" for their 3DS. If for one don't see me carrying it along as a handheld, that thing is HUGE! It definitely won't fit in my bag I take to work. And younger people might not be able to afford one. Moreover, I think it might also be a bit of a stretch to think that 100% of all Wii owners will buy a Switch. If anything, people might be extra cautious after getting burned once already (to be clear: I liked the Wii U for the relatively low price I bought it at).
@bimmy-lee Not really. I believe this is just Kaneko's interpretation of Mara's seductive powers over the Buddha. I don't think there's a long history of Mara being depicted as a phallus. I could be wrong of course.
Also, let's not forget about the likes of Arioch, Mishaguji, Therion, and the super-subtle Rahu!
Bit of a shocker to see poor Jock Frost ending kn 5th place though, coming after Moh Shuvuu of all things?
Still bummed about MHXX not seeing a release in the west. It's not even hard to localize, a large portion of that is already done. Just release it as DLC for MHGen and rake in some cash already.
Despite that, it's rather funny to see that people are STILL salty about MHW.
I haven't played this one (obviously, I don't have random stacks of cash lying around to waste on random video game adaptions), but I doubt I would have given this a higher score. 40$ for a no-frills video game adaption of one of the most boring board games of all time? Yuck. 5/10 feels very generous.
To each his own I guess, but I can't imagine how this could be any more fun (or less dreadful) than playing the actual board game.
@iNintendo You're salty because you bought a game that was overhyped based on absolutely no information whatsoever? Disappointed I can understand, but salty? C'mon now. Inform yourself before your next purchase and I'm sure you'll be fine next time.
@Fuz I agree with you on the rising complexity of sodrware development of console games and how this breaks the plug and play guarantees of console games.
However, this does not look like a 0.001% issue to me. Remember, as others have pointed out, this is the same Ubisoft that put out those unplayable Tetris games. I wouldn't be surprised if it was a case of cutting corners and seeing what you can away it.
However, I don't think that's the real issue here. The fact that this thing costs 40$ is worth more attention I think
This isn't an Atlus game though, it's just being published by Atlus in the US. I'm going to keep my eye on this, but my hopes aren't super-high after The Legend of Legacy.
While I understand it's a bummer for people who actually bought the system because they thought the 3D was interesting, I am extremely happy the 3D effect was dumped when necessary. I usually turned it on for a minute or two when I play a new game, and then just quickly turned that annoying gimmick off. I'd rather they use the processing power to create good-looking games than continue to invest in a gimmick very few people cared about to begin with.
Seems pretty harsh to just ban a guy for streaming a game he got legitimately. If there's a problem, then that problem lies with the retailer.
The only game I ever pre-ordered (because I was afraid it was going to be in very short supply in Europe) was the first Dark Souls, and I received my copy two days early. That wasn't my fault, the game just arrived in the mail. Why wouldn't I be allowed to stream the game at that point? People who want spoilers can watch, people who don't can decide not to watch. Two days layer the internet was overflowing with Souls spoilers anyway.
I'm a patient gamer and usually play games years after they've been released (this year I've completed quite a few games from the 80's, 90's and 00's). I don't think I've ever spoiled a game for myself. If you get spoiled by watching thumbnails in your Youtube feed, you should probably stop subscribing to clickbait youtubers.
@retro_player_22 Care to explain how Playtonic are "crooks"? Yeah, some people thought Yooka-Laylee was lacking in quality, but by all accounts, they did deliver the product they promised (more or less). How does that make them crooks?
I definitely thought this was a good - maybe great - game, but I honestly think this review is severely overrating the it. If you like metroidvanias you should pick it up, but I don't think you should go in expecting a game as great as this review describes it.
@Gamecubed I think Nintendo has always seen this as a collectible (which it is), rather than a gaming platform (which indeed it isn't). The lack of available units sort of confirms that I think.
@Spoony_Tech No one is getting harmed financially here IMO, so who cares. Btw, why are you "strictly against hacking"? Shouldn't you be judging on a case by case basis? Hacking is a pretty broad term, and doesn't always imply malicious things.

Re: Talking Point: An Era Ends As Nintendo Continues to Ignore 3D on the 3DS
While I understand it's a bummer for people who actually bought the system because they thought the 3D was interesting, I am extremely happy the 3D effect was dumped when necessary. I usually turned it on for a minute or two when I play a new game, and then just quickly turned that annoying gimmick off. I'd rather they use the processing power to create good-looking games than continue to invest in a gimmick very few people cared about to begin with.
Re: Reggie on GameCube Controller Support on the Switch
I mean, it would be a surprise to me as well if I didn't have a clue what my engineers were working on.
Re: Reggie Fils-Aime Wishes Nintendo Could Meet Demand For Switch
So this is essentially Reggie saying "Make sure to get a Switch for christmas kids!", right?
Re: YouTuber Gets Banned From Site For Streaming Super Mario Odyssey

@retro_player_22
Care to explain how Playtonic are "crooks"? Yeah, some people thought Yooka-Laylee was lacking in quality, but by all accounts, they did deliver the product they promised (more or less). How does that make them crooks?
Re: Sega Confirms Sonic Forces Is 720p, 30fps On Nintendo Switch
I didn't exactly have high hopes for this one (I never really liked 3D Sonic), but this is still very sad news.
By the way, the article fails to mention this, but this is obviously also coming to PC.
Re: Review: Axiom Verge (Switch eShop)
I definitely thought this was a good - maybe great - game, but I honestly think this review is severely overrating the it. If you like metroidvanias you should pick it up, but I don't think you should go in expecting a game as great as this review describes it.
Re: The Nintendo Creators Program Now Rules Out Live Streaming on YouTube
Good to see that Nintendo is still completely out of touch with the rest of the world!
Re: The Inevitable SNES Classic Mini Hack Is Well Underway
@Gamecubed
I think Nintendo has always seen this as a collectible (which it is), rather than a gaming platform (which indeed it isn't). The lack of available units sort of confirms that I think.
Re: The Inevitable SNES Classic Mini Hack Is Well Underway
@Spoony_Tech
No one is getting harmed financially here IMO, so who cares. Btw, why are you "strictly against hacking"? Shouldn't you be judging on a case by case basis? Hacking is a pretty broad term, and doesn't always imply malicious things.
