@Tom-Massey It's my favorite R-type. I actually still own my original copy from back in the day. That's why I was paying more attention to this. I do agree that sometimes only the super hardcore can notice differences and the differences don't necessarily destroy the game for the casual player. I feel I'm in-between casual and hardcore when it comes to shooters.
City Connection does not have the best track record when it comes to these ports but hopefully they can at least add an option to play at the original speed!
FYI I always enjoy your reviews and come here to read them anytime you review a shooter because of your insight. Thanks!
@Tom-Massey Yeah understandable. Sometimes only super hardcore people can even notice some of this stuff. I don't consider myself in that group. I was just curious if you had noticed and it making wasn't a huge difference in gameplay. I appreciate your response, thanks!
So apparently the game runs too fast and music gets desynchronized? Also bullets are faster than they should be because all they did was speed up the game to remove the slowdown. Bugs as well. Have you played this side by side with the original? I'm curious about what I'm reading.
@sanderev hot rectangles, yes! Another thing that's confusing me about some of this discourse..... Why are some people implying that your created character having larger boobs makes the game about fan service and shoving boobs in your face? From what I recall there were no fan service forced camera angles or moments for your character. I'll admit I didn't play through the entire game but none stick out to me. Also, if those angles or story beats were in there they would apply to a male or non-boob slider character too.
I'm just a bit confused how boob slider = erotic game.
@Polvasti I don't disagree there on BG3 offering more inclusivity and I'm all for that. But the thing to keep in mind is everyone has sexual preference. Many people prefer smaller breasts to larger. So those people are STILL going to act how they will regardless of a slider. The slider just prevents some.
As has been proven over and over men and women can both be objectified no matter their physical appearance and for any reason. Height is a big thing for some when it comes to sex appeal. Should that slider be taken out too? I just think it's a funny thing to remove when the original creators put it in.
@batmanbud2 Games like Baldur's Gate 3 offer way more customization in many ways and that game does not have a terrible reputation. If the ability to scale realistic chest sizes causes a game to get a bad reputation I think society has way more issues than I suspected.
@OorWullie Yeah I agree. X is just an offshoot of the main games. Doesn't really make sense to start with the spin-off and odd duck of the series. You won't get a real feel for the series that way.
I do think it's odd about the boob slider. Many women out there have a larger chest. It's just reality. To remove it is to deny those that want to make a character closer to how they look and for no discernable purpose. I personally don't much care overall. Just an observation.
Looking forward to playing this on PS5. For those that didn't like Ys IX you should try again. I wasn't huge on the setting initially but it starts to get some variety as you get further. Not just city settings. Also the story gets more interesting too.
@Vriess do you own either PS5 or XSX? I own both and this is not true. While there are games that receive dedicated patches to enhance them some older backwards compatible games with already unlocked framerates and dynamic resolution will be pushed to those maximums by the stronger hardware. Just like a PC game.
What evidence is it that you're talking about that said each game needs a specific patch?
@Vriess if it functions how PS5/Xbox currently do it then the more powerful console will push the current games with unlocked frame rates to the maximum. So for a game like this it should push it to lock at 60fps.
@Truegamer79 most NES games were 60fps though. Sure there was some slowdown occasionally but the standard for gaming was 60fps until the 3d generation.
They also have not patched out of the performance issues with Link's Awakening all these years later so expecting them to patch this is going to disappoint.
@YourDaddy Good eye. You're probably correct. It's possible it's 60fps on Switch but that's not the norm. Either way I'm excited for this announcement!
@Arawn93 Oh I agree. But the last game was 30fps {kind of} and low res. What kind of improvement do people think they're going to see on the same hardware? Possibly a more stable framerate but I wouldn't be hopeful. Unlike many consoles as they get older, Switch performance is on a decline. Just look at all the terrible ports recently, Eiyuden Chronicles specifically. It's just a turn based RPG so not a deal breaker. But it's still not going to be much of a difference, especially if there's more to this game
Not sure what people are expecting as far as performance. The PS5 version will be leagues better. I'm sure the Switch version is still 30fps and low res. I'm so glad this got released from Switch jail. It deserves the better looking ports.
@BodkinDQ Congratulations, you don't care about framerate. For many it's very important. I agree it's not required but it's also a big factor when it comes to timing in games. Read up on the recent console versions of Final Fantasy 7, 8, and 9 for more. This isn't an action game thankfully.
All that said I won't pass on a game if it's a consistent 30fps. But when it was 60 and they reduce it to 30 because the hardware is underpowered it's disappointing for sure.
Nah. It needs it to give these older games with unstable 60fps a boost. They also need to unlock the framerate on some of these old games so they actually run well on a newer Switch.
Only at PS4 level? That's not enough imo. That's over 10 years old. I'm not expecting PS5 level but something between PS4 and PS5 would be great. I'd be happy with games being 1440p 60fps with a fast ssd and 16gb of RAM. The handheld screen can stay at 1080p if needed
@LikelySatan Hate to disappoint but I own all 3 systems, always do, so I'm not here to rip on Nintendo specifically or defend another console. I have no special loyalty to any of them cause they are not people but tools to enjoy gaming. I do tend to love Nintendo games especially though.
I just get amused by all the mental gymnastics people do to justify the Switch having no meaningful upgrade in 7 years yet still want to the new releases to be on it. This is the result and it's actually compromised in more ways than graphics but I'm looking forward to seeing people try to say it doesn't matter because of x, y or z. That's all.
Looking forward to all the comments from Switch owners who pretend all the compromises and issues aren't important and that portability trumps everything. Who needs an upgrade, right?
@Wheatly Smart to set those expectations. I went in assuming it was action focused but still maintained lots of RPG elements. The shallowness of those RPG elements really caught me off guard.
Finding a new weapon or piece of armor through exploration is very rare and all the loot you find is just crafting materials. When you do find or craft a new weapon it's just slight stat increases with no special properties. There is no elemental damage in the game, no magic points to manage, no status effects, no customization outside a small amount of Eikons abilities, etc.
@Keyblade-Dan I'm glad you enjoy it. I'm about 23 hours in and I like it but it does feel like an average linear action game with high production values rather than an RPG. The RPG-like elements in this game are no deeper than other similar action games. No elemental damage, no resources to manage in battle other than health, no unique equipment other than a few necklaces, etc.
@Wheatly Yeah it's not an RPG at all. It's a fun, if limited, action game for sure but it's no RPG. People trying to say it is are just doing mental gymnastics.
It's cool we have the crossover events now but it's still too weird to have people in the same party that do not interact. Really makes it an odd experience. If they don't want these characters to interact then give each character their own unique party members that can interact with that main character. In the end the presentation and combat save this have game for me.
I'm always hunting down undubs so this is great. I've never been one for English dubs. Xenoblade games are especially bad. It does suck for those that want the English VA though. I'm sure it was money issues.
@sixrings I agree 100%. This is yet another example of the aging Switch hardware. And btw anyone saying "I don't need a Switch Pro, I'm happy with how it runs", etc would be the first in line to buy one.
I'm surprised this article pretends to be surprised by this news. The Switch running a newer open world game at 60fps? We knew that wasn't going to happen. The Switch was outdated tech when it came out. No way it can keep up now.
Jeez I can't even recall which credit card I used to buy Paradise with all those many years back. This sucks. I was lucky enough to get the download code but not that expensive physical I ordered. Jerks.
@YoshiF2 I can understand that point of view but it honestly shouldn't need to be a consideration. A system should be powerful enough to run a game at 60fps. Most releases on PS5 and Xbox have a 60fps option or higher nowadays. The Switch has been underpowered since day 1. I get the compromise to make it portable but they really should have a "pro" option for people like myself who value a smooth framerate and textures that aren't muddy. I say all this as a huge Nintendo fan.
@Greatluigi It's not terrible but 30fps isn't the standard anymore. PS5 and Series X releases are generally 60fps now. Nintendo needs to beef up their hardware. I love Xenoblade Chronicles 3 but man does it look blurry with bad textures. Only the art style saves it. I keep thinking how awesome it'd look on another current gen console. I only buy Nintendo exclusives on Switch now. Otherwise it's other consoles.
It's cool they are releasing the first one physical but since a remaster was released on more powerful consoles a while back I'm not sure this will compare well. Good for those with only a Switch though
