Re: Hamster To Unleash Renegade On The Mean Streets Of Switch

@ThanosReXXX I hear you. Neo geo games look great! I did like Death and Return of Superman myself. I never cared much for the Jaleco beat em series. They felt like hollow Final Fight rips, even the supposed best 3rd game. I grew up Nintendo but did pick up a Genesis in my late teens so I caught up fast! Ninja Warriors on SNES is a fun one too.

@ThanosReXXX Console wise I'd take Final Fight 3, Turtles in Time and Streets of Rage 1 and 2 but I'm sure those were the gems you were thinking of. Knights of the Round, King of Dragons, and original Final Fight are my go to arcade examples.

I like the Neo Geo ones but I feel most of them have such shallow combo system such as Robo Army and Mutation Nation. Still fun of course!

@bimmy-lee I'll be honest and say I'm not a huge Sengoku 3 fan. It looks nice and has cool moves but the stages are way to long and boring and they have a small number of enemies that repeats far too often. Obviously that's just my opinion. Overall I feel like Neo Geo beat em ups are weaker than most.

@T-Donor66 Wow, impressive retort. And not exactly relevant or rooted in actual research. I'm using the most recent console as an example because that's more representative than a 12 year or older system. But let's cover the old ones, shall we?

Gamecube was the lowest selling system of its generation. 7 million units of Smash sold which is good but still didn't help GameCube sales much. The N64 got buried by the PS so nothing there. Obviously Smash didn't sell too many systems, did it? The Wii sold well because grandma could do motion bowling, not because of Smash. 37 million units of Mario Kart Wii vs 13 million Smash Brawl.

My main point is Smash is popular, yes. I buy every Smash. But not very many people will buy a Switch just because Smash is coming out. I'd love to be proven wrong because I love Nintendo.

@Wolfgabe I'm not trying to be a jerk but an honest question: Are you experienced in normal fighting games like Street Fighter, Guilty Gear, etc.? I ask because what they showed for Smash today is pretty much par for the course for any fighter getting updated but not a true sequel. SF 4 had several version that added characters, mechanics, stages, tweaks, balancing, etc and it still isn't a full new game. This game tweaked, exactly like you said. Nothing huge was changed. Look at all the Wii U ports the Switch has gotten so far. Why are you so confident this one isn't when most signs port to Champion Edition Smash?

An E3 like this makes me happy to have multiple systems. I'm sure Nintendo will have more to show this year but they seem to just be pushing Pokemon light and Smash Wii U Champion Edition for the rest of this year. Where was SMT? Yoshi? Metroid? Fire Emblem is 2019 now? No More Heroes? Ugh....I'm just disappointed we didn't get something more. If the Wii U hadn't failed the Switch would have a small library.

@Wolfgabe It was a good presentation if you like Smash. If you don't like Smash it was disappointing. They showed some very cool games before the 30 minute Smash content but they're all 2019 or no date. There was absolutely no reason to spend so much time on Smash Wii U Champion Edition, because that's all it is. "Look, this person makes a different face when you hit them!" "Look, it's just the same characters we've had in every Smash game but we added 2 new people and a clone!"

I love Nintendo and my Switch but there is nothing to get excited about for the rest of this year unless you like Smash and it's a lazy Smash at that. Or those Pokemon amateur edition games I suppose.

@Crono1973 Some of us do want the pixels. You don't. That's ok. Just because we can make more complex graphics doesn't always mean best but I am all for some 16bit or 32 bit style 2d. You're speaking with your money and so are all the people that want it. Its just a style you don't like. That's about all I can say on that.

And many people complain about Nintendo's weaker hardware and graphics. I don't but its why so many games just don't make it over to the system. Nintendo themselves know how to make it work but not without sacrifice such as 30fps on Kirby, 900p on Mario Odyssey, or an inconsistent framerate on Hyrule Warriors. It can be looked at like ever since the Wii Nintendo has been a generation behind graphics wise. But to reiterate I love Nintendo and their style and philosophy that graphics don't make the game. Its why I've owned every Nintendo system since the NES.

@Crono1973 Your statement on Nintendo making current 8bit games had nothing to do with the point of my comment. No AAA developer is truly making 8 bit lookalikes anymore. Megaman 9 and 10 are the most recent examples for AAA producers making 8 bit clones. They have the resources to do more.

My point is that its not what Nintendo is making now but their overall general philosophy. They rarely tout graphics. Its all about innovation for them. They have never had the most powerful hardware on the block but once (snes and maybe N64) and even that's debatable. I agree Nintendo games look great but they are far from envelope pushing like the other systems. My entire point is that graphics do not make a great game which we seem to agree on.

Also as an aside these games may be styled 8 bit but they do way more than an 8 bit system could. Unless you program your game with NES, Master System, C64, etc limitations your game isn't really 8 bit. I personally love 8 bit style but I'm also ready for more 16 and 32 not 2d style games like Sonic Mania.

I totally understand being tired of a visual style. Nothing wrong with that. I personally can't stand all these low detail crap cell phone look alike games such as the Secret of Mana remake.
