YIIK: A Post-Modern RPG will receive a major overhaul in 2022 thanks to a new – and free – definitive edition update, Ysbryd Games has revealed.
Called YIIK I.V, the update will launch across Switch, PS4, Steam and GOG and is said to reimagine the original Japanese-style RPG with a variety of improvements. The game's publisher says to expect "more engaging combat, reworked story events, new characters, redesigned cutscenes, new music, and much more, all interwoven with the existing game."
Here's what to expect:
REIMAGINED CUTSCENES - See YIIK through fresh eyes, experiencing the most compelling and accessible version to date
NEW STORY CONTENT - Meet new characters, challenge new story bosses and dungeons, and spend more time with the supporting cast
QUALITY OF LIFE - Square up with improved combat while enjoying better load times and a wealth of other improvements
NEW TUNES - I.V includes over 45 minutes of new, never-before-heard music
If you haven't heard about YIIK before, we'd urge you to check out our review of the original game, which is still currently available to download on the Switch eShop. We gave the game a very solid 8/10, calling it "a dazzling explosion of stylistic presentation and compelling strangeness."
Remember, the upcoming YIIK I.V release will be offered as a free update to those who own the base game and will launch at some point in 2022.

Alright… what?! Crazy additions… I wonder if the base game is already good, or…?
YIIK has been on the receiving end of a lot of heavy criticisms, usually focusing on the story and the combat system, so I'm curious how far the game can be salvaged in this major update.
Limited Run Games had announced a physical release ages ago, it might be that they and the developers decided to hold off so they could print something a bit better received than the original version.
YES!!! I LOVE ALEX YIIK!
I have no interest in this game but I honestly hope this update fixes it. It's nice to see a creator turn things around.
The best thing this game did was provide us with one of the best OneyPlays series in recent memory and a brilliant review from Running Shine
OK, but can you kiss Rory though?
@MajorasLapdog I never would have dedicated so much braincells to Yiik lore if not for Oneyplays lol
It seems unsalvageable to me. The problem with the games story wasn't the cutscene framing it was the endless verbose monologues and overwhelming focus on dialogue about details irrelevant to the main story.
The story lies stagnant until the tail end where its a desperate attempt for a "deep" conclusion something that hadn't been developed.
And the story is pretty much locked in place by the voice acting unless they're redoing it all. It needs a rewrite, not more scenes tossed ontop of the dumpster fire.
The Battles problem is that its slow, clunky and there's no variety in the enemies attacks and behaviours, just the animations.
They'd have to come up with whole new system to make it work.
@Dr_Lugae
As I understand it, they added a story config mode that lets you choose between reduced dialogue, silent protagonist, or the original full dialogue where Alex comments on everything.
Parts like the infamous Golden Alpaca scene also appear to have been completely rewritten, so I get the impression that they really are redoing large portions of the game.

@RupeeClock Actually it's all the same dialogue from the main characters with new dialogue from the Alpaca added on top.
That's why I'm questioning how much will change because a lot of it is locked in by the VA.
Nice! I played through the entire thing and enjoyed it… but boy the mini game based combat action got old pretty quick. Hopefully they just delete that out
@patbacknitro18 @MajorasLapdog So happy to see fellow Oneyplays fans here! 😁 Without their commentary I wouldn't be interested in this one.
@Broosh if the game was as silly and self aware as their commentary of it was I think it'd be far better.
Will they make the protagonist less pretentious?
This game ended up so garbage and so hated that all the attention made it successful
“My mistake was thinking that video games are art. I wanted to make a game about a guy who’s a piece of ***** unlikable character, who by the end of the game has to transform. But too many gamers, when they look at this, they immediately get triggered by it. So, the thing is, games aren’t art, they’re toys for children and it’s considered in bad form to talk about anything meaningful, impactful or thought provoking.” -Andrew Allanson, YIIK developer.
I'm all for anyone going back and improving their game. It's kinda more impressive for a game so many would consider a lost cause like YIIK. But I'm curious, aftee doubling down like he did, if the changes to YIIK will be enough?
This be a tall order because YIIk needs a complete do over for this to work, at least in the story department. UNLIKABLE main character, a guide of what not to do when making earthbound in terms of tone, and scenes and dialog which only serve to waste your time.
He's playing with damaged goods here.
Post modernism is bad. No surprise this game is bad.
Fun fact: The main character is a creep with a borderline abusive attitude towards women and is voiced by Chris Niosi--a voice actor who was let go from the role of Byleth for his abusive nature IRL as well as breaking NDA.
Just thought people should know.
@JR150 Don't forget that he is a self-insert for the pretentious creator.
@MajorasLapdog
Thanks for the Running Shine mention. I didn’t expect to stick with it for the entire two hours, but it was a great review. As a plus, I don’t need to play the game anymore.
@TheJGG Last I've heard, it's not great. The creator has an obsession with this woman who ended up dead in a hotel water tower, and based a character off her, with the main character being based off him. The script is extremely wordy as well.
@VoidofLight @noobish_hat 8/10 seems generous, but I'm less in the dark; so all is well. Seems the game really needed a major facelift, so let's see how it goes.
@Solomon_Rambling you’re welcome! Honestly, Running Shine is great and I don’t see anyone talking about the guy. He just released an OoT review and it’s equally entertaining and interesting
"Hey, Alex Yiik here. You can't touch me lol."
Oneyplays made this game such a treasure to be remembered until the end of time.
