Bear-d news for bear fans, as developer Gummy Cat announced today that their upcoming hotel management sim Bear and Breakfast would be delayed on the Switch because "playing with a controller did not feel as good as we wanted".
The ursine game was due to come out on July 28th, making this delay a rather late one, but no doubt a vital one. Here's Gummy Cat's full statement:
While working on the little bear game, we realized that playing with a Controller did not feel as good as we wanted, and it needed more time in the oven. We want the game to be as good as possible for all our players on every platform.
With that in mind, we are announcing that Bear and Breakfast’s launch on the Switch is being delayed.
We are working very hard to finish the extra work, with our goal being to release the game on the Switch as soon as possible, sometime within the next couple of months at most. The game will still launch on PC via Steam on July 28th. However, Controller Support on the PC version of the game will also come at a later date, within the same time frame.
Luckily, the delay seems to be going down well with fans, as Gummy Cat later posted:
We'll keep you updated when we get a new release date!

That has to be the most wholesome delay announcement I've ever seen. It's always nice to see small indie teams be so transparent on why stuff like this happens, it makes you feel all nice and fuzzy inside, you know?
It's amazing that indie studios will take their time and delay games that aren't quite ready, while AAA behemoth publishers are happy to undermine their products and rush anything out the door.
Take your time, the game will likely be better for it.
Is that bear's hat a Gravity Falls reference?
indie studios doing what AAA studios don't. goes to show the difference between passion projects and cash-grabs.
love to see it ❤️
@iLikeUrAttitude I thought the same thing! but while Dipper's hat was a similar color, it had a pine tree on it, which itself was a replacement for a similar hat with a lucky star on it.
I'm sure they didn't want to be the BEAR of bad news but it is what it is.. I'm looking forward to picking this up for my girlfriend when it releases. I'm just glad they care enough to hold off until its polished.
I simply can't get enough of these "wholesome" games uwu.
Not really, tho. Not really a fan, and it's weird that the most popular games on Switch are either these cutesy games with a baby toy art style or ultra-violent murder fest games set in a hellish environment. There are few games I'm finding that have a middle ground in aesthetic that are neither of the two extremes I just mentioned.
It feels a bit strange that a good portion of the Switch's user base plays both types of games, the cutsey platformer types and the Doom-like games.
My partner will be disappointed to hear of the delay. The silver lining is that we can see what PC gamers think before we buy it.

Shame, i just hope they're not setting the bear too high to pass.
@russell-marlow As someone who plays both... Why is that odd? They both appeal to different moods I might be in. Heck, I'm fine with games in-between too. (Metroid, Monster Hunter, Zelda, Xenoblade, Ys, FF, Hollow Knight, Celeste, Fire Emblem, Dragon Ball, SMT/Persona, Street Fighter, Skyrim, Octopath Traveler, Triangle Strategy, Musou there are plenty of popular games/series that aren't murderfests or ultra cute)
My sister was really looking forward for this.
She gonna be mad!!! Jk
Regardless, hope the best for the devs.
I think the title of this article is a bit misleading. It made it seem like the Switch controller had issues, causing the delay, and not the dev concluding that they wanted to improve the feel of using a controller for the game.
@link3710 I mean... sure?
But there can be an overabundance of anime games that may not be my cup of tea sometimes and some of them can fall into the category of being sort of edgy almost like Doom like with the SMT games and it's subject matter.
When it comes to anime games, I can tolerate some of them if they're made by Nintendo but like a Youtuber Scott the Woz once mentioned how some anime-style games can feel too alien to people like me who don't regularly consume them and sometimes downright cringey in some ways like Xenoblade 2 and it's weird moments.
I know I'm sounding a bit nitpicky but I still genuinely think there's a weird variety of those types of games that I mentioned in my previous comment and how it creates a sort of weird mood whiplash when you look at them.
I guess I can say I'm craving for more reasonably mature games that aren't juvenile in tone.
@link3710 Also, I'm not one of those people that plays anything and everything that's massively marketed on the console, I have specific tastes and that's why I sometimes seek out hidden games or underrated games.
I get the feeling that I might soon experience a wider library of games when I get my Steam Deck.
@russell-marlow I feel like there's a huge difference between a game being edgy and it being a murderfest, but that might just be me shrugs
Very disappointed I have to wait longer, but I'll rather wait than get a rushed, broken game.
@russell-marlow Have you tried Ys? I got Lacrimosa of Dana on Switch on a whim cause it was cheap and it's amazing. For context, I'm not big on anime either. Bought a few anime games super cheap just to see if they were any good and disliked most of them.
I've just finished Ys 9: Monstrum Nox on PS5 and it's also great. The series has likeable characters, the writing is good, the story is classic Japanese insanity but I didn't mind in these games. And the hack-n-slash combat feels really good. Actually the controls just feel right in general, hard to describe unless you try it.
@Ursaking Thanks, I'll look into it.
@link3710 Wut?
How is gore not edgy?
@russell-marlow There's no gore in SMT?
@russell-marlow
Not to jump into your conversations…but gore isn’t edgy at all. Or rather, gore doesn’t make it automatically edgy. It’s quite pedestrian in film for example. Another example is a game with a walking duck frustrating people is more “edgy” than a lot of games with gore.
@graviton Oh I get it, people are so desensitized to gore they don't even realize how messed up it is. That really makes no sense to call gore "not edgy". I'm sure that's just you, man.
Most people will agree any form of dismembering or disembowelment is pretty dark no matter what context.
The fact some people are used to it is sort of disheartening to hear.
