Pokémon Scarlet and Violet are on their way, presumably adding another hundred-or-so critters to our 'Dex, and we can't lie — some of them are already winding their way into our hearts. There's Fidough, the purebread dog that everyone loves, Smoliv and Lechonk, the little guys with meme names, and Pawmi, Gen IX's Pikachu stand-in, not to mention the cute starters of Quaxly, Sprigatito, and Fuecoco.
But, ahead of Scarlet and Violet tearing up our list of favourite Pokémon, we thought we might take the time to decide who holds the top spot in our hearts — and what that says about us as people, players, and trainers. Join in with us in the comments!

I have a pretty weird range of reasons I get attached to a Pokémon. Some of my favourite types are Ghost, Electric, Dark, and Psychic, but sometimes that doesn’t even matter. It often simply comes down to aesthetics – is it a cool dog? Is its Pokédex entry weird? Is it really darn cute? Or is it a crocodile?
Yes, really. Crocodile-like, and lizard-like Pokémon in general, are some of my favourites. Totodile is my favourite starter; he was my first real starter, and I named him Croc. He’s just so hyperactive and enthusiastic that it’s hard not to love the little fella.
But more recent times have introduced me to Krookodile, Generation V’s own sneaky, snarly croc. Krookodile is just one of my favourite concepts for a Pokémon ever. It’s a crook! Its eyes look like a thief’s mask, and it’s potentially based on Sobek, the Egyptian deity that has a common epithet that essentially says “he who loves robbery”. You can probably tell who my Generation IX starter is going to be, going on this.
But my all time favourite is Arcanine. Nope, not a crocodile, but a flaming fire dog that you can ride on. It’s so big too! I was one of those little kids who’d watch the opening of the anime and see Ash on Arcanine’s back and dream of one day being there too. I still do now, really. An Arcanine in real life would make things much easier.
Analysis: Alana REALLY likes crocodiles, and efficient transport.

I don't know how to choose my ultimate favourite Pokémon. Aesthetically, I love Snom to death (and I bought a Snom onesie to prove it, even). But in terms of the Pokémon that stuck with me for the longest, or mattered to me most, it has to be my favourite starter, doesn't it?
That would be Chikorita, eventually Meganium, although I knew him as just "Chicky". He wasn't a competitive Pokémon, not really — but he got the job done. Mostly just by using Solar Beam and Razor Leaf over and over. I'm not really much of a min-maxing kind of Pokémon trainer! I just hit things until they fall over, and carry ten billion Max Revives and Hyper Potions.
However, just so everyone doesn't pick their starter, I also want to give a shout out to Dreepy and Dragapult, which I think have a fantastic mixture of cool design and great stats. Now I'm old enough to pay attention to those things, it turns out they make a huge difference! Most "cute" Pokémon don't really hold their own in battle, but Dragapult does. Also, he was my first perfect-IV Pokémon (after many hours of really boring breeding. I don't know how people do it)!
Analysis: Kate really likes the cute little guys, but is really bad at Pokémon.

Picking my favourite Pokémon is like choosing between my children, it’s simply not fair. The only way that I could think about this logically was to divide my calculations into two camps: starters and others.
My favourite starter is simple as, much like everyone else, it comes down to the first one I ever picked. That leads me to Mudkip. He’s my best friend, he’s my pal, he’s my homeboy, my rotten soldier, my sweet cheese, my good time boy. He’s the answer that I come back to time and again in response to this question because of the sheer number of hours that I have spent with that little guy. He’s also the first Pokémon that I ever maxed out, and our Hydro Pump was a force to be reckoned with.
However, it’s not fair to think "favourite Pokémon" and instantly go to the main players. What about all those other guys that have to strive hard for a spot in the starting line-up? That’s where my complete adoration of Axew comes in. I mean, he’s a dinosaur who sounds like a sneeze – what’s not to love? It’s true, he’s a more recent addition to the franchise, but I just love how the little fella grows up to pack some monster punches – Laser Focus and Giga Impact? That’s a big combination for one who once seemed so cute.
Cuteness leads me down a whole different path, but I can settle on my flipper and dino boys until then.
Analysis: Jim enjoyed What We Do In The Shadows. He also enjoys the combo of cute-but deadly.

When it comes to picking your favorite Pokémon, a safe answer can be to go with your gut and choose your first ever starter. For me though, that Charmander I originally grew up with drifted away over the years and my appreciation for the grass starter, Bulbasaur grew and grew! And while Bulbasaur is still fun and cute these days, Ivysaur has landed the top spot in my book for almost a decade now thanks to the punky yet still adorable look of the middle evolution Gen 1 starters.
I base a lot of my fondness for Pokémon on their “coolness” factor and not on how effective they are in battle. Ivysaur is like a frog dog combo that got lost in the woods and became truly one with nature. A real buddy that you could go on a hike! Plus they can use their vines to catch you if you trip and fall! Pals forever, I swear!
Analysis: Zion seeks companionship in his Pokémon more than anything, and like Alana, wishes for a world where Pokémon are real.

I’m very much a purist when it comes to Pokémon (and by “purist”, I mean that most of the Pokémon after the initial 151 have very much fallen out of my memory), so my favourite will always - without question - be one of the creatures from Red and Blue. I’m also going to be incredibly boring and predictable here and just say Mewtwo, which I know is the most obvious answer possible, but you have to understand that as a ten year old back in 1999, Mewtwo was undoubtedly the coolest Pokémon around.
After beating the Elite Four in Pokémon Blue, meeting and subsequently catching Mewtwo felt like a natural conclusion to the game (I was never particularly interested in fully completing the Pokédex at that age), providing a wonderful sense of accomplishment and catharsis after trawling through the game for dozens and dozens of hours. Not only that, but Mewtwo swiftly became the crown jewel of my Pokémon team, and I felt like I could take on any trainer in Kanto and beat them with ease.
My love for Mewtwo wavered ever so slightly when I walked out of a store on a hot, sunny day and pulled a shiny Charizard card out of a pack of cards I’d just casually picked up from the shelf. Even then, I knew this was the card; the one that everybody sought so dearly, and it made my love for Charizard grow exponentially, particularly given that Charmander was my first ever Pokémon. But when it comes down to it, Mewtwo will always be my true favourite.
Analysis: Ollie needs to play more Pokémon games.

I like Rotom the best, because a zippy zappy trickster who can inhabit objects is really cute and fun, but tbh i'm not a fan of how they've been shoehorning it into the UI in some of the more recent gens.
I also like Goomy because it's cute and blobby and cheery yet drippy.
Sawk is my boy since I like sporty looking humanoid creatures.
I hope he will be added in Pokemon Violet.
My favorite pokemon is Slaking. I know that might make me seem lazy but I really love doing massive damage with him! Here's to hoping I'll see him again in a future pokemon game
I do have a lot of favorites, I like a lot of the Eeveelutions Espeon & Flareon being my favorites and I also love the OG Dux aka Farfetch'd.
Charizard is my favourite then Lugia as my 2nd fav and then Greninja for 3rd.
I really hope the new Gen will have Gen 6 starters as i'm desperate to have my shiny Greninja in a game, he's been sitting in Home for way too long.
Tauros is my all-time favorite, followed by alolan Sandslash and Arcanine
Scyther/Scizor. Love how aggressive and menacing Scyther's design is and Scizor feels exactly like what a metal version of Scyther would be.
I’m not entirely sure how this one came to be my favorite, but I still unabashedly love it. It’s equal parts derpy, cute, and cool:
Ampharos
Sometimes it's Meowth, sometimes it's Rhyhorn.
If Pokémon were real, I'd have one of each and never let them evolve.
I allways had raichu as my favourite as I could not have it in Yellow... When I played let's go from the moment I had access to another Pikachu that would evolve I said goodbye to the starter lol
My all time favorite is Typhlosion but Falinks came real close. Love those little spartans
Wobbuffet for me. He's just so enthusiastic and clueless, adorable.
Snorlax because he's living the dream, enviable.
It might be cliche, but my favorite Pokemon ever is my first starter, Blastoise (and its evolutionary line). I mean it's a turtle with giant cannons! If you've read the Pokemon Adventures manga, Blastoise is owned by the best trainer (Green) and can canonically fly (pun intended).
Following Blastoise, I like Lugia, Celebi, Haunter, Raichu, Vileplume, Tyranitar, Scizor, Mewtwo, Togetic, and all their evolutionary lines. I also have appreciation for the Sceptile, Roserade, Misdreavus, Piplup, Greninja, Rowlett, and Lucario evolutionary lines.
I get a lot of stick for it from Pokémon loving friends, but I just love the floating pieces of metal. Bronzor is the cutest, and the best, and I’ll fight anyone that tells me otherwise!
My favorite Pokémon is MissingNo., which makes me a hipster but also means
m̶̡̧̻̯͇̩̦̑̈́͗̈͌͝ ̷̡̨̛̜̳̼͎̺̥̼̒̽̍͐̂̍̋̊͗̌͆̎͝e̶̡̘̟̞̘̰̮̣̊̔́̃͆̚̚͘͝ͅy̴̡̿̕ ̵̧̨̱̼͈̀̀̍̐͋̒͋̆͘͝b̴̢̞̞̥̯̩͈̫͙͔̈́̐̕r̸̡͕͙͙͍͔͈̠̝͓̮̎̾̍̌͋́̾̄͘͝@̵̧̧̨̹̯̼̖̌͊͛̀̀́̏͆̕̚ ̷̢̢͓̜̳̫̲̭̜̥̭̠̥̈́͂͊ͅ!̷̪̣̼̱͕͖̲͓̩̦̪̹̈́̒̎́ͅn̴̳̺̟̈́̉̈́̔̏́͂̀̎͠ ̶̦͎̎͆̃̅͆̉͝h̷͔͇̰̫̱̝̮͍͉̔ù̴̡̙͉̩̜̞̹͙̺̦̳͚̣̇̒̐̾͆͘ ̴̛̯̖̰͇̱̬͓͂́̌̋͛̒̇̉̆͗̌̕̚͜u̷̬̻̮͌̔̀̿̽̂̈́̅̓̏͆̂̌͠ų̷͍͎͎̠͚͉̲͇͈͕͉̮̐̇́̓͑̈́͜ ̶̡̨̨̱̫̗̟̩̮̭̪̼́͋̽͆̏ẽ̴̛̤̳̉̐͆͗̈́̓̀́̅̽͐̓ŗ̵̢̢̠͇̩̭͇͎̽ţ̷̜̫̟̞̜͍͕̙͛̅͋̏ͅ ̴̫̞̩̽͊̏͐̈́̈s̸̖̘̖̤͗͊͂̏̊̍̊ ̵̢̩͎̫͇͔̋̋̈́̈́̓͛͛̒̅̈̚̚͝͝
Cubone! He's been my favorite since I was 4 and I have no idea why. I'm not a big fan of the skull and crossbones aesthetic, I don't resonate with the lost mom lore, and I never watched the early anime episode with Cubone in it. My best guess is that I fell in love with the original card art. Cubone on a cliff, looking up at the stars.
I guess it just mirrors my modern music tastes, where I love depressing songs, not because they resonate with me, but because I like how they sound.
I really like Flygon, it just looks so cool.
I know a lot of people love them but I don't care, Eevee and evolutions are my favorites. They're super adorable and perfect in every way.
Except maybe battling but I'll make it work. I don't care about competitive anyway.
I think it's really lovely that everyone has a different favourite!! The ones I would assume no one would pick always have at least one fan
Oh this is an impossible task! Squirtle was my first starter and will forever hold a special place in my heart. Cyndaquil sits in second place though. My favorite non starter though is Volcarona. I have used it multiple times and every time have loved that beefy moth.
Lotad. He is gorgeous baby Boi. He makes me stupidly happy and I wanna cuddle him.
Riolu and Lucario have been my favorites since Gen 4, and I haven't been as big a Pokémon fan since.
In terms of starters, Charmander and Cyndaquil are both tied in my book. The former is awesome all around, and the latter was my first ever starter in the games. Both have great lines too.
In terms of overall favorite....Hard pick. Most Dragon types (and non-Dragon type lookalikes, like regular Charizard and Gyarados) fit the bill. As for cutest? Gible, no contest. I unashamedly call it Giblykins. I fell in love with Fukamaru back when we only knew Japanese names, for crying out loud!
I started back with Pokemon Red. My favorite in that game? Mr. Mime! Or "Marcel" as he was called when you could only get one by trading.
With Gold, my favorite was Shuckle.
Ruby, I loved Chimeco.
Diamond, Chingling!
I recently got back into Pokemon with Sword and Shield and discovered a love for Rhibombee. Toxtricity was another favorite.
I generally like a lot of Ghost, Dark, Fairy and Psychic types as they have the most unique/weird/cool vibes going on.
Decidueye- Awesome ninja-archer-ghost-owl, and I love all four. Also my first ever Pokemon and shiny. I was so disappointed to find out Legends only supports the hisuian variants, which is stupid because you can get the normal versions of other hisuians via the distortions. This was my only major issue with the game. The Hisuian is still cool, but I was really disappointed that I couldn't get Mr. Kiseki (The name of my shiny) into the game. They could have at least added it in that update!
Incineroar. I have never known why.
Snorlax. I'm lazy but I get away with it because I'm cute.
My favorite is Emboar, so this whole generation has been pain. Can't bring him to any game yet, hoping Gen 9 fixes that.
Doduo. It’s the only Pokémon I could legitimately see myself owning and riding. Garchomp is also hecka cool.
Weavile has been my favorite Pokémon since Gen 4. Before that, it was Sneasel, and before that, it was Haunter. Dark/ice… dragon and psychic hunter, c’mon! The speedy assassin!
Crobat is a third choice. I used to play competitively in single Pokémon battles with Crobat and loved the frustration my strategy would cause. Toxic/fly/reflect/and whatever the other move was… Was so satisfying to watch others slowly, slowly lose to a Pokémon they’d scoff at initially.
My favorite starter want my first starter. My first starter was squirtle, but my fave is piplup, whom I named "Pengin," and would never, ever trade to Cartman for "shoe."
My favorite of all time is Zapdos, because his spiky plumage reminds me of Doc Brown's hair. Zapdos will always be "the Christopher Lloyd of pokemon, " to me.
My other favorites are generally the most conceptually ridiculous ones. Defeating someone with an ice cream, a bag of trash, or a chandelier always makes me laugh.
Scizor! He's red, my favorite color, and looks cool doing it. Cool 😎
My number 1 is shared by two Pokémon, which are Gardevoir and Metagross.
But Poliwhirl, Tangela, Dragalge, Hariyama and Entei are very close.
Zion got it right
Bulbasaur is #1 and Ivysaur is pretty good
Arcanine is top contender, Alana
Scyther for life!!
Back in the day we had a gadget on the n64 that let us play import games. I think it was called explorer or something like that. We played original smash months (possibly years) before EU release. At some stage, whilst playing, this really weird “spaceman” type thing appeared on stage and booted me off! I had no idea what it was but it appeared fairly regularly, sometimes getting me the ko!
I had to find out what it was, so researched. At this time, the internet was in its infancy so it took me a while, then I discovered Pokemon! It had been delayed in Europe. (Can’t remember why.) I realised the Pokemon had come from a pokeball ingame. The Pokemon in question was hitmonlee and it’s been my favourite ever since!
Been playing since I got red in third grade, but Grookey might be my all time favorite. He looks so "Pokémon", he's a monkey, he's just delightful.
My boy Clawitzer, I have a strange fascination with shrimps 🤣🤣
Primarina is beautiful, and is a special nuke in battle. However, when I like a Pokemon, I "like" the whole line, even if I actually don't, the final evolution is pretty much the best part, so what I'm saying is that I like Popplio and Brionne as well, and, well, I actually do. The designs are great, they're very cute, they eventually become Primarina.
I know Popplio was considered the underdog during pre-release SM, but I never really saw it as that. I just picked that one cuz I thought it was the cutest. Never did I imagine that it was the least liked of the starters.
So what DOES that say about me? Do I like things that are beautiful and strong? Am I the beautiful and strong one? I mean, I'd believe that one if I ever did anything productive...
I’m going to go out on a limb(no pun intended) in saying there probably is no other person that lists Sudowoodo as their favorite but there’s something I love about that big groovy tree. When I first encountered it in gold I just knew I had to catch the thing and fight with it. I found pretty quickly there were far stronger Pokémon to add to my party but I always kept him close by purely because I loved the idea of having a petrified tree as my best chum!
Totodile is my favorite starter to just not big on his evolution designs.
Been playing since Red and Blue days and my favorite is Rapid Strike Urshifu. His design is just so cool and has two of my favorite types (fighting and water). Literally have been waiting for a super cool fighting type and finally got it in SWSH DLC
WHISCASH BABYYYYY
My favourite is Mimikyu. I like how his design and even special ability tell a story about a Pokemon whose basically attention seeking because his nature stops any form of eye contact or attachment and he just lashes out at poor old popular Pikachu over it (not sure what that says about me? 😅). But ye I like a design that tells me a lot about the monster (double points if it’s moves/abilities do to) and I think none do it better than Mimikyu. It’s shiny (which I’ve never been able to get) is also one of the best. I have so far always called them ‘PIKAPIKA’
My second favourite is also a Alola resident (underrated roster) and that’s decidueye (had too look up the spelling 😅). I really love the three stage evolutions and the final design is the perfect blend of many elements (archer, owl, ghost, even a hoodie etc.) without feeling like too much. He was also my main in Pokken and somehow had an equally cool region variant.
I always called him Oliver (Green Arrow)
@sunny63 Shiny Decidueye is awesome, I am partial to Dartrix's shiny a hair more. XP What can I say I love a good barn owl. Decidueye is one of my favorite recent gen designs, a super cool look especially in the darker colors.
Kingler is my #1, we always crabhammer our way to the top.
I have always really loved the Marill line. For Halloween one year, I found a Marill costume and was Marill for like 3-4 years. They're just really happy blue mouse bunnies. I love that Azumarill is a playable character in Pokemon Unite. I always wanted Marill to be an alternative skin for Jigglypuff in Smash.
Hard to choose. One between Nidoking, Koffing and Lickitung.
My favourite is a beast. Love it. Became my favourite just by seeing it
Raichu is my favorite, probably because of its surfing animation in Pokémon Stadium where it rides its tail. No need to pull a board out of the ether like Pikachu, it brought its own.
One of the great things about Pokemon centres is that there's every kind of Pokemon.
My brother's favourite is Pyukumuku,
and to my surprise I was able to get him a soft toy of the monster.
@KateGray Every Pokémon is someone's favorite, even Weedle.
As a fan of turtles/tortoises and having only really paid attention to Gen 1, Blastoise is and will probably always be my fave. It’s a frickin’ turtle with cannons!
1) Goodra
2) Togedemaru
3) Lucario
4) Raichu
5) Dugtrio
6) Cyndaquil
7) Appletun
8) Togekiss
9) Infernape
10) Spheal
11) Furret
Wobbuffet's my favourite!
Yeah, I know it's not the most impressive Pokémon aesthetically, but for some reason it stands out to me. Seriously, try using it in a casual playthrough and it will flip your experience.
My favorite? Gardevoir and Pikachu. Both equal for me.
My favorite is Exeggutor. I love his goofy and ridiculous design. I really love that he got a new form in the Alola region as well. He’s a real underdog, difficult to play due to many weaknesses. I do feel a bit sorry for him, seemingly pulling the shorter straw in the evolutionary lottery. Regardless, he has some strange charm about him which gives him a VIP spot on my team in most games.
Croagunk is my boy. I always name them Tony Gunk, or Tonya Gunk if it's female.
My favorites are Pachirisu, Emolga, Piplup, and Pikachu ❤️
I don't think I could ever pick any one Pokemon as my favourite since there's a lot of factors that come into play in that regard: maybe I've used them on a team (starters, Seismitoad, Glaceon, Hawlucha, Hariyama, etc.), maybe they were one of the first Pokemon I ever fell in love with (Ledian, Slowbro/king, Conkeldurr, etc.) or maybe their design is highly detailed or intricate (Orbeetle, Runerigus, Escavalier/Accelgor, etc.), it's a number of factors that all culminate into which ones I like and don't like. If I had to narrow it down to a current one I really love, I'd say Porygon-Z: great design, brilliant progression from the previous stages, amazingly fun battle strategies and all around a friend; the whole package really. I'm currently in the process of making an Every Pokemon Ever tier list and let me just say: _there's a lot more in the upper half than the lower half.
My favourite has always been Psyduck. I guess that means I'm confused and headache prone.
Tyranitar. Mainly because of my memories of Generation 2. I ended up building my entire late game team around it. It’s got great stats, good typing, and learns a huge variety of moves. Making him/her a demolition machine.
My favourite has to be gengar, along with pretty much all the mythical pokemon
I stand with Ollie. Mewtwo will always be my go to for collectibles and things. It was the first ultimate Pokémon. Especially back when psychic type was wildly OP and then here was this Pokémon that was meant to be OP. I remember just going back and basically sweeping the Elite 4 with it over and over and using him to wreck most of the Pokémon Stadium content.
Pikachu fer life!
Eevee will always be my favourite. Everytime I play a Pokèmon game I'm like right how do I go about catching mah boi Eevee.
The moment I saw Tyranitar back when it was first introduced, I knew it would be my favorite Mon. It still is.
Tyrantrum for me!
My favourite is Exeggcute. They're like a gang of little troublemakers.
Yoshi is probably my favorite pokemon tbh
Whimscott because I bet it will let me lay my head on it and sleep.
mew is my favorite, mewtwo is cool also
🗨KATE: "I love Snom to death (and I bought a Snom onesie to prove it, even)."
#PhotosOrItDidn'tHappen (must be IN the Onesie)
Typhlosion is my favorite. He lead my team for my longest Pokemon adventure ever, counting sheer gameplay hours and not just content.
🔹️Charizard is my all-time favourite. (Who DOESN'T love a fire-breathing flying dragon?)
But to pick my other favourite Pkm, I have a rule;
*No Starters (or its evolutions)
*No Super/Special/one-of-a-kind Pkm
*No Dragon-type
With that in mind, my favourites are:
*Seviper
*Aggron
*Tyranitar
Snorlax, because I love the thought of an animal who's chill, until you wake them up, where they then proceed to beat you up
I have a few favorites but my 1st is Pidgeot. No real reason. I just raised mine to 95 in Yellow and I've always liked it. They have a wonderful shiny palette and when they mega evolve they look cool.
Vulpix for me. It’s a fiery fox with multiple bushy tails - perfection. Don’t actually like Ninetails as much, though it’s still a nice design. All about the aesthetics, not the battles, for me.
Shout outs to Rowlet, Snorlax, Greninja and Crobat. Can’t believe someone else also flagged Crobat!
first starter: bulbasaur (pokémon blue)
favorite starter: snivy
favorite pokémon: phanpy. i don’t even particularly like ground types and i’ve never even used one on my team, but the first time i saw it in heartgold i instantly fell in love with it
honorable mentions: mew, victini, dunsparce, vulpix, murkrow, whimsicott, sableye, zoroark
My favourite is Garchomp. It probably stemmed from Pokemon Shuffle, where he was a common selection, and then I saw an ultra cute soft toy of him, which I bought. In Pokemon Unite, he's good too. Not sure what it says about me!
It's a tie between Luxray and Staraptor for me. I adored the first two gens as a kid and when gen 3 came around, it wasn't "cool" to like Pokemon anymore. Then my curiosity got the best of me in highschool and I started a new file on my brother's old Pearl cartridge and got hooked. Luxray and Staraptor never left my party and they represent my return to being a Pokemon fan.
Mareep! It’s just so cute, and it carried my party in either Sun and Moon, or Sword and Shield. But really, I love all Pokémon.
My favourites in team (non combat) no particular order
Starter: Squirt 1st pkm
Legend: Mew called Pew
Symphony the beautiful Snorlax
Little Mac,Machamp or shiny: Sulk
Righteous Riachu
And due to my 1st alpha shiny in legends Parasect called Peach
honorable mention Margaret the Magicarp however I trained it to lvl 93 for a challenge then traded it to my brother i her dearly
@arnold337 forgotten to type miss :,(
Bulbasaur - Starter, largely due to him his using solar beam in the anime was adorable.
Sudowodo, Sableye, and Snorlax for non starters.
Porygon2 is probably my favourite overall. It was love at first sight back in the day, but a pain to get my hands on one. In Black 2 (if I recall correctly), I had both Porygon2 (with Eviolite) and Porygon-Z on my team, the first time I have ever had two members of the same evolutionary family, as well as having a Pokémon that I never intended to fully evolve.
Celebi is my favourite mythical legendary. So adorable and enigmatic. I’m still gutted that I missed out on the shiny event. I also love Manaphy, who is adorable, and I’m such a sucker for sea angel characters (as my favourite Digimon of all, incidentally, is probably MarineAngemon).
There are very few favourites in Gen I, but I love almost all Gen II Pokémon. Gen III was such a crushing disappointing in that respect as I’m largely indifferent to most Pokémon of that era. Gen IV was a slight improvement, but not by much. The last couple of gens have introduced some of my absolute favourites though.
Other favourites in no particular order include Venomoth, Politoed, Slowking, the Togepi line, Dedenne, Dunsparce, the Chikorita line, Scorbunny, Blissey, Huntail, Gorebyss, Blacephalon, the Vanilluxe line, and the Applin line.
First Starter: Squirtle. Still a fan after all these years. Great evolution, great personality, if not a tad simple.
Favorite Pokemon in general: Carracosta. Gen 5 is what pulled me back in, adter gens 2-4 slowly saw me drift away. And there was a freaking blue fossil sea turtle Pokemon waiting for me. Almost as if Gamefreak knew exactly what welcome back present to give.
Mine are Lugia, Hisuian Lilligant, Lilligant, Meloetta and Raichu. In that order.
Pokemon 2000 > all other pokemon movies.
Failinks. Those little guys are just too much!
Ninetails for me. No matter the variant. Mostly because I got deep into Japanese mythology right around when I stopped playing the games but they were a part of my pop culture heritage. Having a yokai for a buddy before it was cool always appealed to me. Plus they look so elegant. After that Ditto in Ditto form. Something about that Pokemon never being appreciated in its natural form tugs at my heart strings.
Shuckle is my favourite and has been since the Gold/Silver days. ^_^
Dragonite is probably my all-time favorite, followed by maybe Jolteon, Kingdra, and Latios. Not sure who my fifth would be, maybe Eevee or Pikachu or Squirtle or Mudkip ^_^
Torchic, favorite starter for life!
Urgh the "I'm a purist" statement made me cringe hard. I didn't even bother reading that paragraph. It's ok to like gen 1 best because nostalgia but admit that's all it is. Acting like they're better or purer for being semi-randomly selected to be in the original set is silly. Especially considering the first episode of the anime features a gen 2 Pokémon and we've since seen leaks of a ton of Pokémon from early development that that didn't manifest until gen 2 and sometimes later.
My first ever starter was Squirtle but Mudkip is my favourite Pokemon....and I actually have grown to love Bulbasaur way more than Squirtle. So the theory doesn't always apply.
Other than good ol' Mudkip I'd struggle to pick on any given day between Litwick, Trubbish, Sirfetch'd, Ivysaur and Cubone. But there are so many I love!
My all time favorite Pokemon is Pinsir. There's something so threatening about a four foot tall beetle that can suplex you with its massive claws. I had Pokemon Blue growing up and while my friends with Red were loving Scyther I really latched onto my exclusive bug. Other Pokemon have found their way into my heart, like Honedge and Torterra, but I will always love Pinsir.
