Re: Poll: Are You Excited About the Mini NES?

Meh, it's either a missed opportunity or a pragmatic business decision depending on which side you take. Ideally, it should have been connected to an online store with a much better and customizable selection. The Action 52 it ain't but there's still a few NES counterparts to Wii-era shovelware wasting space in there.

There will always be a place for things such as this until Nintendo and other companies finally wisen up and create a true platform for preserving games from entropy and preventing games from becoming patently unavailable to buy legally.

Re: Soapbox: Why Websites Don’t Need to Give a Game a Review Score (and Probably Shouldn’t)

Solid_Stannis

I view review scores as pretty redundant on the whole, but they are necessary when such a vast majority of so-called video game "journalists" have trouble getting their point across otherwise. So many nitpick on and blow up tiny things that in practice turn out to be non-issues. And that's not to mention the rampant corruption of ethics and bias so prevalent in mainstream reviewing media, resulting in "good" scores for games that objectively don't deserve them.

In the end though, the only opinion I truly value are my own, those of my friends, and maybe three or four video reviewers.

It's still nothing short of mind-boggling that DKC3 wasn't released alongside its series-mates during the hype period for N3DSNES, nevermind as part of the subsequent pathetic trickle the release schedule has been reduced to now. Swing and a miss, Nintendo... swing and a miss.

Re: Poll: NX and Mobile Make This a Defining Year for Nintendo - Are You Optimistic?

Solid_Stannis

Nintendo have always owned the first-party market with nothing even resembling competition, be the times good or bad. The only real problem I have with their current situation as a consumer is a lack of a steady release schedule, and a lack of diversity, among other things. As a lifelong customer, I feel they've can do so much better. They have so many IPs that have been gathering dust for years now. The hardware is more than good enough as it is; this is not part of their problem unless you're a highly shallow individual, and unfortunately for the rest of us, a majority of the gaming consumer base are.

The way the consumer base has "evolved" (though Darwin would scoff at this usage of the term), Nintendo are never going to be "top dog" again unless they sacrifice damn near everything that makes them good in the first place. Trying to become market leader (which isn't necessarily a badge of honor these days) should become a priority only when they manage to get back to where they once belonged with pleasing their already established fans, which they've failed to do with innumerably many stupid and archaically-minded business decisions over the past ten years.

I can't in good conscience say that I have overly positive or negative hopes for Nintendo this year... the ball's in their court now.

Clunky, outdated, and completely without charm. Never liked it, even as a kid when I was desperate enough for video games that I completed Mario Is Missing! three times over. Got good geography grades though, so who knows if it was really a bigger waste of time than this.

Re: Poll: The Wii U GamePad - Where Do You Stand on Nintendo's Hefty Controller?

Solid_Stannis

It was never going to revolutionize gameplay anyway, and it's too late now. My only true beef with the GamePad (heavily subjective, I know), aside from how un-ergonomic the design is, is how inconsistently it's used. My TV has a problem in that any audio delivered through HDMI is delayed by a noticeable amount. The GamePad's sound output and some decent speakers nullify this problem (nevermind that the wii U should've had optical audio out to begin with...) but some games output sound while some don't, and then some only do in Off-TV Play mode. You'd at least think you'd be able to use the GamePad as a dedicated sound device when using a Pro Controller, but nope. Just a useless "second" controller, still.

If Nintendo ever had any sort of idea about how to make the most of it, they rarely if ever, let the players know.

Re: Review: Donkey Kong Country (New 3DS / SNES)

Solid_Stannis

DKC has always been a bit too rote-seeming to me ever since I grew skilled enough to reduce any inherent challenge to nigh-on nonexistence. On the whole, the game's just a bit too unsatisfying when it comes to rewarding your playing. You don't even need to complete bonus areas to add them to your percentage. Collecting lives becomes a redundant effort some two worlds in, even without today's luxuries such as restore points and the like.

Still, if only by default, it is ten times better than puzzle pieces whose only purpose is unlocking gallery artwork and music like it's some off-brand cereal box pack-in game from the '90s. Ain't that right, Retro?
