The Mario Party series isn't normally on the shortlist when identifying Nintendo's most popular and iconic franchises. It's easy to be snooty about the mini-game collections but, considering the Wii U was home to Mario Party 10, it's not exactly fallen out of favour and dropped off Nintendo's regular cycle of releases.
It's also the source of some fun bits of Nintendo trivia, including bizarre injuries that cost Nintendo very real money in distributing gloves, and a moment of madness when Nintendo of Europe's localisation included an offensive term. A light-hearted series with some dark moments in its past.
In any case Did You Know Gaming? has given the series the treatment, so check it out below.

I remeber my brother and I stealing our parents bicycle gloves to play this game and Burning holes in the middle of them from the conrols stick.
We got in so much trouble bur it was better than the blisters we had on our hands previously.
The only way to ruin friendships now is fighting over the rights of who gets to use the gamepad:(
One of Nintendo's biggest sellers, believe it or not.
Shame they've gotten rid of the boardgame format and replaced it with everyone in one car.
Used to love this series... until the Wii version. Not wide screen, and each game had me shaking the Wii Remote in an awkward fashion.
I'll still get Mario Party 10 eventually. 1-8, DS + Island Tour are amazing, I love them sooo much. 9 is still good, the mini games are very special and I love it even though the car really hindered it.
I was craving some kind of board game so I found Fortune Street for Wii really cheap the other day
Many good times were had between my group of friends and Mario Party 2, 3 & 4.
By the way, I liked when the guy in the video tried to pronounce Japanese words.
The only thing interesting in this video was the explanation about why they chose to keep the car for Mario Party 10, which actually makes perfect sense. Although it doesn't make it anymore of a popular idea. Lol Why is there still speculation amongst fans, why they kept the car, when someone official already said why? Everything else was stuff you'd know if you knew anything about the series at all for the most part because people talk about it so damn much, especially the glove thing.
I love Mario party 9 and 10....and Island Tour is very good fun too. I've played all the earlier ones and don't care too much for any of them. In mario party 7 tho Toadsworth says "bugger" which is also a swear word
I really don't get that quote about the car mechanic. As somebody who's played the first three MPs tons of times as a kid, I always played strategically: Should I run for the star even if an opponent is way closer to it or should I go to Boo and steal people's cash or stars? Sure, dice throws always bring a bit of luck into it but not to the point of luck that MP9 and 10 or even Amiibo Festival had.
The game just got a bit boring because of the many animations and tons of unnecessarily gimmicky special spaces that were just there to shake things up.
The car for me and lots of people I personally know and play with didn't work because nobody cared about your stupid game in the first place. Who cares who wins in a minigame when the game just randomly steals from somebody automatically!? None of my friends certainly do and that's why we're bored of the current MPs.
I'd say go back to the old rules, throw away most gimmicky spaces (the ? Spaces can stay) and have mostly Blue and Red Spaces. But hey, those boring games of randomness still sell well so why change something, amiright? I most certainly will vote with my wallet should MP11 bear the slightest resemblance of MP10.
@Dankykong I thought the explanation was great. It does make perfect sense. The developers clearly observed how much players are engaged, it's just that the players weren't aware of the problem. I personally prefer the old formula, but Nintendo did a thorough job trying to engage players.
Nintendo invented the 'Wii Party' series to take Mario Party's place as a 'video boardgame' - having miis instad of Mario and friends was supposed to make it more inclusive for the new crowd. Personally, I think it took all of the character out of it though.
Whilst I appreciate the sentiment about keeping all the players engaged when using the car in Mario Party 9 and 10, I feel this is ultimately pointless. You would still pay attention to what your opponents are doing simply because they may be able to steal a star or coins from you, check how close they are to a star themselves, and the potentially humorous events that may result from happening spaces and so on. I feel the only real benefit is that each board is a consistent length, and even that is a bad thing depending on the gimmicks of the board (good gimmick, short board, and vice versa).
@toxibunny Because sadly Wii Party (U) is faceless. It's like a game with the Wii(U) console system interface added, so it's all greyscale base with smooth soft inoffensive textures and easy listening music. There's a lot of fun to be had with those games but they lack the value and charm Mario gives their main series.
I don't mind the voice change, "D'oh I missed!" is much more memorable than "Oh my God!" tbh.
Interesting video. I still like the older MP's best, (not in the car), but the newer ones are still fun, too.
Mario Parties 4, 5, 6, and DS are my favorites. Hopefully someday they'll go back to this kind of formula.
Played Mario Party DS one day and never looked back. If there's ever a relatively pointless exclusive VC game I'd buy for my My Nintendo points it's that!
@GoldenGamer88 I'm with you on Mario Party 11. I didn't buy 9, or 10 (and I regretted 8). If they can capture the overall vibe and magic of the earlier Mario Partys I'll be there!
Sigh. I thoroughly disagree with their decision for the party bus. It doesn't keep it more engaged — it just makes it strategic in (in my opinion) a weaker sense.
I'm a fan of the earlier entries and the DS one, but the recent ones have lost the joy of the originals. I hope the next entry will take Mario Party back to its roots.
I get why their reasoning for the car would sound like a good solution on paper, but when play testing they should have immediately realized how not fun it is and scrapped it. I'm shocked it even saw the light of day and EVEN MORE shocked that they brought it back AGAIN for the next game, because by then surely they must have known what the public thought of it. It boggles my mind.
Only Mario Party 1 is truly great in my eyes. Why? Because it had stick-rotation-minigames, because it had NO items, and because the maps had a finish line upon reaching you got 10 coins each time. MP2 was a great disappointment, with boring maps and a weird, blurry zoom, and MP3 was only slightly better. However, I'm hoping this time we'll see MP3 coming to the WiiU VC regardless.
Loved the first 3 on N64, hated the Advance version, loved the 4 gamecube ones, loved the DS and 3DS ones, loved part 8 on Wii...but didn't like part 9. I still have yet to purchase part 10, which I will eventually, but the originals I thought were better. I still don't like the car style and would prefer the classic style, but I have Wii Party U to keep my wife and I entertained until...now if I could only find Mario Party 10 with the Amiibo included for the original price and not some hacked up price, I'll be in business. Went to Toys R Us over the weekend and looked at the Wii/Wii U shelves, and they were completely empty...what's going on there? I'm finding it harder and harder to find Wii U games anywhere.
Mario Party 2 was great! I remember people breaking N64 controllers with part 1 and I never had that problem, although I could see where the analog could be broken in the mini game where you had to turn it around as quick as you can. They always made great use of the controllers and always had fun times!
@AnD4D Part 8 on Wii wasn't too bad.
@MussakkuLaden You just read my mind, Mario party 1 was an amazing game that definitely would make the top 5 best mario party games.
@JLPick I'm just comparing it to the N64 games, I guess. The boards were great in those games, especially Mario Party 3
I'd like to try 10, but hate the car... so won't.
Never did play Mario Party 2 though
@AnD4D I'm not one that likes the car either...ended up disliking part 9 and find myself in the same position to not wanting to try part 10.
