I just wish the Sonic team would figure out what they want a Sonic game to be and stick with it. Every modern Sonic game I've played has been a mash up of several different play styles, like "Here's a 3D open world level" then "Here's a on rails running level" and "Here's a 2D platformer level". Modern Sonic games have been having a serious identity crisis this past decade and I sure wish the Sonic team would just figure out what kind of game they want Sonic to be and stick with it. You don't see Mario doing this kinda @!#?@.
If a game is being released on a cartridge then it should be playable from the cartridge with no install required. This is case of Nintendo failing to tell a developer "No" when they really should have.
If you're going to basically threaten fans of a system by saying "Buy this game or we won't make more games for your system." then you should probably make the game something with a broader appeal than a sports title.
I ended up being flat broke on Black Friday last year when Nintendo finally released the black New 3DS in North America, and since I'd rather not pay double MSRP on eBay I've been holding off on getting one in the hopes that they'd release them again for the holidays this year. There goes that plan. =P
I find the lack of Xevious and Ms. Pac-Man disturbing. With the power of the Switch and the storage capacity of it's game cards you would think they could have included a few (dozen) more games.
They really should be making more NES Classic Editions that hundreds of thousands of people actually want, rather than yet another DS iteration that has little to no reason to exist.
Great pictures! I am surprised that there wasn't a comparison done with the Atari Lynx model 1 though, since I'm pretty sure that is the one handheld most similar to the Switch in size and shape.
Cool stuff! I've never played Splatoon but I remember having a ton of fun doing LAN play with Metroid Prime: Hunters on the original DS. Any multiplayer enabled FPS on a handheld really benefits from having a LAN play option.
I really like the concept of the Switch, but $300 is a ton of money for someone on a tight budget like me and personally a new Zelda game alone can't justify the expense. So for the time being I'm going to hold off on the Switch until next year when it's game library has had some time to grow then see if it might be worth picking up. A new Metroid Prime game, DOOM, or even just a port of Star Fox Zero (a game I really wanted to play when it came out but never owned a Wii U) could definitely get me on the Switch bandwagon, but for now I'll be holding off until a couple more games I'd be interested in playing come along for it.
I think the L and R button placement will be less than ideal for a lot of Game Boy Advance games, but I like that they went with the classic Game Boy form factor. At the MSRP of $80 I'll buy one if it can display Game Boy / Color games in their native aspect ratio and doesn't stretch them to fit the GBA screen ratio.
The rechargable battery pack does worry me slightly, since it may be proprietary and require some ingenuity to replace when it eventually wears out after a few years, but since I'm kind of a fanatic for all things Game Boy I'd be willing to give it a shot as long as they get the aspect ratios right.
For two years now I've been saying that I was going to hold off on buying a New 3DS until Nintendo released the regular sized black version in North America, and complaining that they hadn't done it yet. Now that it's finally coming I think I'm kinda obligated to put my money where my mouth is and go queue up outside a store 2 or 3 hours before they open on Black Friday to try and get one.
There's really only one third party game that I want to see ported to the Switch, and it will sell me on buying the console if it happens. That game is DOOM, and it doesn't seem implausible to think that it could happen with Bethesda on board for third party support.
@unovachamp90 I don't know, the Pro Controller looks kinda like a cheap plasticy prototype to me and Sega Genesis controllers were pretty much bomb proof. Like, if there was ever a global thermonuclear war that wiped out all of civilization then the only things that would be left are cockroaches, Twinkies, and Sega Genesis controllers. The Switch Pro Controller doesn't look quite that durable.
I love the design, but I'm not quite sure about the "Switch" name. Nintendo must be planning on taking Sony and Microsoft out back behind the wood shed and beating them with it.
Bethesda! You cheeky devils! After all that noncommittal talk about the NX, I see Skyrim running on that thing! Make Doom a launch title and I'll buy it day 1.
Holy guacamole! Thunder Force III is definitely my second favorite 16-bit game, so I'm absolutely ecstatic to hear that it's getting a 3D remake! Now I just have to keep my fingers crossed that it gets a stateside release.
I would be willing to wager that this article will receive the largest number of comments containing masturbation jokes of any Nintendo Life article ever published. Now I'm just waiting for the retro review of 3D Pocket Pool for the Game Boy Color.
Not at all surprising. Mobile phone games generally lack the depth and complexity needed to be any more than passing fads that provide their players with a week or two of occasional amusement before they move on to something else.
I agree with the writer completely on this one. In a current gaming landscape dominated by tech specs and techo babble, what Nintendo really needs to do right now is make everyone remember that we play games to have fun and higher tech specs do not equal more fun. There are mountains upon mountains of 8-bit and 16-bit games of yesteryear that are still just as enjoyable to play today as they were the day they came out.
For more complex and story focused games graphics can certainly play a key role in story telling and making the world feel believable to the player, but you don't need 4K (or even HD for that matter) resolution to pull that off. Developers have been putting out wonderfully fun and engrossing 3D action and adventure games since the days of the N64, original PlayStation, and Saturn; and I'm fairly certain that the NX will have graphical capabilities greater than any of those systems.
As long as Nintendo does what they do best and make an affordably priced system that's fun and engaging to play with then the tech specs won't matter, they'll still sell just fine. =)
As much as I adore my AGS-101 model GBA SP and consider it the best way to play Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance games on the go, I do have to admit that the audio quality is pretty terrible when it's being piped through the charging port. Even the best headphone adapter available for the system (which is the little blue Intec one as far as I can tell) still results is crackly audio with a somewhat annoying underlying hissing sound unless you crank the volume way up.
But hey, it plays Doom and Doom II on a beautiful backlit screen so I think any little niggles I might have over the audio quality can be forgiven. =)
This is honestly the first NX rumor that I hoped wasn't true. Social media is probably the worst trend of the 2000's and the sooner sites like Facebook and Twitter die off the better the world will be.
What I got out of all that, regarding the NX, is that it's undoubtedly going to be a system that does some very different things from it's Sony and Microsoft competitors that will require a bit of explanation to the general public. After the Wii U debacle though I have every confidence that Nintendo has taken the import of effective marketing strategies in the West to heart and will be properly explaining what exactly the NX is and how it's different from the other systems on the market when they feel that it's time to unveil it. I just hope that the unveiling comes sooner rather than later!
Star Fox Adventures is (believe it or not) my favorite game in the Star Fox series, so I'll definitely be checking out the Dinosaur Planet animated series. Thanks for the heads up NL! =)
That sure sounds like "We've looked at it and we're not interested.", but hopefully the NX will get big enough sales numbers to make EA and other major third parties change their tune.
It's a sad thing when the fan made Metroid game that Nintendo shuts down ends up being a vastly more liked and well respected game than their own upcoming Metroid release.
An interesting rumor, but if it is true then I'm just hoping that Nintendo won't be trying to sell us a data plan for the NX. I'll buy the system but there's no way I'm getting roped into paying a monthly data plan bill for it.
I'm just going to chuckle at everyone freaking out over the idea that the NX might use a chip with mind blowing graphics that are only ever so slightly less mind blowing than their competition, then go back to playing games on my backlit original Game Boy.
They do make a lot of good points, and with the whole widespread retro gaming craze that's been going on for the last half a decade or so I think a lot of adults as well as kids would appreciate having a simpler gaming system to use. There's a lot to be said for just popping in a cartridge, pressing the power button, and be playing a game; rather than try to wade through menu systems, wait to download patches and updates, and have to mess around with all the other unnecessary and often frustrating complexities that modern gaming is so prone to. I don't know how many other people would buy a console without any sort of OS or online connectivity in this day and age, but I do know that I'd sure buy one in heartbeat. Sometimes less is more (fun).
I completely agree with Miyamoto's take on VR. With the current technology out there VR just isn't something that can be used for more than short periods without making most people nauseous, and it's still very expensive to make said nausea generators. VR is definitely something that Nintendo should avoid until the technology improves and doesn't cause nausea in the majority of its users, and I think Sony will be learning that lesson as well when PSVR launches later this year.
It really looks lot like Thunder Force III, and I loves me some Thunder Force so if it gets close to the 3DS goal and they're offering physical copies of the game then I'll definitely back it.
I always knew him as Robotnik growing up with the Genesis games, Saturday morning cartoon show, and comic books. It really confused the heck out of me when they started calling him Eggman in later Sonic games, but it is kinda cool to know why they did it now. I would have preferred it if they stuck with Robotnik, but hey, what can you do.

Nintendo was very smart to pass on the VR trend, and I think Sony will be in for some very difficult times once all the returns start coming in.
Getting lost has been a problem for me in every 3D Zelda game other than Twilight Princess, but I grew up with 2D games and have never had very good situational awareness when it comes to 3D games; so I'm guessing I probably just miss a lot of environmental cues that younger players who grew up with 3D games might be more attune to.
