In one of the biggest surprises of today's Nintendo Direct broadcast, Nintendo confirmed that Bethesda's Doom will be coming to the Nintendo Switch in the Holiday season. Originally released in May 2016, it was a critically acclaimed new entry in the series that delivered intense 60FPS gunplay.
It's a particularly fascinating announcement as it's a title that not only looks gorgeous but stakes its credibility on buttery smooth gameplay. Evidently developer id Software is pretty confident about how its engine will play out on the Switch, both docked and in handheld mode.
It'll certainly be one of the most intense and mature titles when it arrives on the Switch. Are you excited by this announcement?

Doom ! Wow haven't played that in years !
OK, this is big news in terms of AAA third party support. Bethesda is actually doing the Switch proud.
Whoa! Now that's third party support! What do you think of this Sligeach?
WOAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
this is cool. this is really cool !!
I already have this game on PS4...but if they include Motion controls I am getting it!
Megaton
i played and finished the game ob ps4 ! amazing ... might play it again on switch later in years or something
bethesda is doing great job !
Im wondering though, how long were these games in development?
Here's me thinking this direct was not very good and then this came
Good news but I can this for £4 on PC.
Considering how huge the updates were for this on PS4/ Xbox one people better accept that this will probably be like NBA 2K18. You will have to download portion of game on to SD card.
I did NOT expect this. But I really hope it goes over well. A successful Doom port will go a long way to buffing up the Switch's 3rd party library!
Also boo-hoo you will probably need to have an SD card. WAHHHHHH it's 2017.
@kobashi100 Oh no! Heaven forbid! An SD card! Such a rare, expensive and hard to obtain item! Especially in 2017!
I have this on PC and love it, shocked it's coming to Switch and will definitely buy it again. It's over 80GB on PC, so it'll be fun to see how big it is on Switch. This console keeps getting better and better, I wasn't sure it would get a lot of 3rd party support, but this is awesome news.
This game is awesome, got it free with my PS4.
Will be buying all the Bethesda games. Good times!
Welp. Had I not purchased this last year for my Xbox.... Dammit Nintendo. Same ole 3rd party story: too little too late.
Btw DOOM was easily GOTY last year.
Big news, hope it includes the DLC. Didn't buy this on Xbox One, so I'll probably get it for Switch.
@timson72 Where the hell can you get it from for £4, some shady grey market site?
So can we hope for 1080p/60fps? Doom is a demanding game. Wonder what comprimise? Can Switch handle id tech 6? what about multiplayer?
I haven't bought a Switch yet but I always said that I would buy one if it got DOOM. Time to save up and put my money where my mouth is! =D
It is nice to see Bethesda showing support of the switch. I did enjoy playing DOOM on the PC. For those who do not have a gaming PC, I would strongly recommend the single player of DOOM on the switch.
The multiplayer on DOOM is okay, but Splatoon 2 multiplayer is much better.
<3 DOOM, now hide the original in there
@BinaryFragger it's true though. It is a port. It will not sell well because, like all the other Switch 3rd party support, is an old port that ppl already own on other systems.
The ability to play on the go is not as big a selling feature as Nintendo homeowners like to believe it is, in the context of double dipping on an old title.
EDIT: honestly a better barometer is going to be NBA 2K 18.
Honestly I'm blown away on this and Wolfenstein. I knew the system could handle it (Vulkan engine here clearly being used from the looks of it) and does it nicely. It's nice to see Bethesda giving its all instead of a generation ago doing some childish jousting game for kids and nothing else. This is a huge welcome 180 in support. Stuff like THIS will make third parties care.
I did get Doom for PC on a discount awhile back, but I'd snap it up for portability sake and to support Bethesda, it feels right to give back if they're going to make a real effort.
Bethesda is delivering for real!
I've always wanted to play it, but never bought it for some reason. There's a chance I'll get this for Switch.
@dimi guarantee you it will run at 720p 60.
Maybe dynamic scaling up to 900 if Bethesda wants to get fancy. If Bethesda isn't outsourcing the port.
@Hughesy textures will be lower resolution plus compression so who knows how small they can get that file size.
Guys @gatorboi352 is a troll do not pay attention to any of the opinions you see here.
Finally 3rd party support getting serious. Probably won't get it since I can't play shooters without kbm anymore (and the pc version is less then a tenner) but still awesome they're releasing it for those who want it on the go.
NintenDoomed
NEED. THIS. NOW!
Nintendo is "DOOM"ed!
WUT
Did not expect this at all. This wasn't even on the radar for possible announcements.
Bethesda is now supporting the Switch more than EA and Activisions. Crazy times we live in.
We all know that Nintendo biggest selling point is "games for kids". Reaching adult audience was never easy.... Really hope this game will sell well. Can we hope for Call of Duty and Battlefield?
Bethesda has my support. Doom is awesome and I've not yet played Wolfenstein so this is a win for me. Skyrim I never finished on PC so the Switch version will be the time to finish it.
@gatorboi352 better find you some extra salt.. man doom is back on nintendo consoles and people still complain.
Dooomed
Brilliant news! I have it on pc but I'm definitely getting it on the switch. Physical or download, I don't mind.
Wolfenstein 2 is a definite for me too.
That was a great direct lads!
The graphics looked a bit low, the PS4 version is great but something about that small preview looked like it was 720p
Bethesda's top notch support was a surprise!!
This and Wolfenstein II were the only positives in the Direct. The other Switch games we've seen numerous times before. Otherwise, it was a very disappointing Direct. They tried to rescue it with Super Mario Odyssey. It looks amazing but it's just 1 game. XC2 looks really nice too.
!!!
I guess Nintendo is finally DOOMed.
This and Wolfenstein are the best news from the direct. I haven't dabbled in these franchises in years (hell, I haven't played a main series Wolfenstein since Spear of Destiny!). I've always loved the original DOOM games and I've played a bit of Doom 3, but I didn't get very far in it. How who have thought that we would get such a massive game on a Nintendo console so soon (and on a handheld no less!).
My only concern is that sales won't meet expectations as the audience would already have played these elsewhere a year and a half ago, and they are dirt cheap at the moment as well.
Either way, this is a rare full priced day 1 buy for me, along with Wolfenstein, whenever that gets a release. Here's hoping that all DLC is included as well.
This was GOTY 2016 for me, and I will gladly play it again on Nintendo Switch
Unreal! crazy surprise
One of the highlights of the direct.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE agreed the rest was weak, I was hoping for arcade archieves but the collection already on PS4, not just Nintendo arcade collection
I genuinely did not expect this game to come to the Switch. Doom and fpses arent for me but wow what a shock
I loved this game on my PS4. I'll gladly double-dip for portability
@SLIGEACH_EIRE No mention that the Switch is about to get two AAA FPS games?
Brilliant news for anyone who hasn't played it. Not the type of thing I'd double dip on for portability after playing it on XB1 but this is still a pleasant surprise. Anybody who hasn't played this is in for a treat, it's superb.
[removed]
@ValhallaOutcast @SLIGEACH_EIRE Not for me. As excited I am to play DOOM (again), I also got my eye on Mario Party The Top 100, Kirby Battle Royale, Dragon Quest Builders (to play on my Switch before the second comes), and Nintendo's Arcade Archives.
Great news. Doom passed me by the first time. Have heard nothing but good things about it.
Bethesda bringing DOOM to Switch? Surely it will be the classic...
... oh.
My jaw drop during the Direct was a sight to behold. YO YO YO, WHERE MY HATER TEARS AT?
The day has come when I actually agree with @SLIGEACH_EIRE
Dreams do come true.
@Nintendoforlife Wouldn't bother, he seems to enjoy trolling because his Wii U has been abandoned and he refuses to move on. I honestly have no idea why he posts in these articles, when he has no interest in the Switch, seems like a huge waste of time.
@Hughesy ok not £4 but £8 on cdkeys
@Nintendoforlife Look further up in the comments and the Wolfenstein II story. I said it's good news.
The switch is getting more in its first year that I plan on buying than any other system I've ever owned.
Tch. More ports.
And it's brilliant news!
I'm seriously excited by this. Not all of us have access or indeed want multiple gaming systems, so all this is new to me.
It's all going to be OK, the Switch is going to be OK. Nice one Nintendo.
I went into this thinking we could get Fallout 4 switch, but who needs that when we have DOOM BABY! WOO!
Easily the best part of the direct for me.
Hallelujah !! I think I've been waiting to this moment since I played Doom and Doom II on PC and when I later switched to Nintendo... Waited for a ninty version. And now it's portable. Like it should be . It finally happened. And Wolfenstein! What a great day
@timson72 Good luck playing your 4*(whatever) pricetag game on your computer on the train.. hihi
@SLIGEACH_EIRE I saw that but after all the "Switch will never get third party support" "the switch can't run crap". I was expecting a little more than you just writing it off as a "positive". But hey I guess we can pretend like Doom and Wolfem being portable is completely unimpressive.
@kobashi100 That's only if they bring the SnapMap feature to Switch
Good direct for Nintendo only gamers
the 3rd party support is real!
Well I never got to my PC copy so I'm pretty excited about this.
@Nintendoforlife You said that, not me. Too many people putting words in my mouth.
I thought I'd fallen asleep and YouTube had autoplayed another video. Genuine jaw dropping moment. This will stretch Switch to breaking point and I'm sure Digital Foundry are already planning their content. However even on my archaic PC this is the dogs.
This is unbelievably great news for Switch, and will hopefully encourage other publishers to invest time and money in the platform.
Oh, crap. OH CRAP!!! THIS IS BIG!!!
Switch means Switch from the TV to a handheld. Switch means Switch the colours of your Joycon. Switch means Switch from feel good Nintendo titles to stress gore fest dude bro titles.
That's not a criticism by the way, it just seems there's a two different games platforms running on the Switch now. I'm impressed.
Considering how DOOM can run with Vulkan, the switch is compatible with Vulkan, so I am excited about this game coming out for it. Bethesda seems to love the switch,
I've wanted this... For so long...
@Smash_kirby and we love Bethesda! ...well, sort of...
@SLIGEACH_EIRE So you've never said something along the lines of "Major AAA games will skip the Switch just like the Wii U" or "Nintendo has made the mistake of making another underpowered console, and it will come back and bite them"
I must admit, I've never played a DOOM game, but I loved Quake III Arena and Unreal Tournament on Dreamcast.
I just looked it up. This is what id Tech 6 can do? Looking at the picture I thought it was Unreal Engine 4.
Switch titles I got/will still be getting this year:
Botw, Mario Kart 8, Fast RMX, Sonic Mania, Fifa 18, Super Mario Odyssey, TES Skyrim, RE Revelations 1 + 2, Doom, Xenoblade, Rocket league.
And then there's titles that I may also get like Arms, Splatoon and a bunch of indies. That is one expansive list of games for a console that hasn't been on the market for a full year. Was hoping for VC to be announced, but my wallet is grateful for the fact that is isn't coming soon. Good times.
@Nintendoforlife Haha I remember him saying that.
@Nintendoforlife You quoted "the switch can't run crap", I never said that and you've falsely quoted me further down as well. You do know what quotations are for, right?
@BinaryFragger I have a PC but still didnt play Doom
I played this on PC and loved it. It's probably my GOTY 2016. The thought if playing this on my hour and fifteen minute bus commute to work is very exciting. Will definitely buy for Switch.
@BinaryFragger I'm 38 years old and have never played any Doom game. Or a Wolfenstein game for that matter.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE I corrected myself and said along the lines farther down. You're avoiding the question though.
@Koudai1979 Of course you do anyone who's been on here for the last 7 months has seen it weekly.
I own PS4 and X1 and PC... never played Doom, and obviously haven't played Wolfenstein 2 cause it's not out yet (I did play the first though, and it was surprisingly good, like, really surprisingly good).
Man... I'll buy two copies of this game just to show Bethesda some love in return. Do me right and I'll be a loyal fan to my dying breath. And Bethesda is definitely doing all of us right.
Don't let that go unrewarded people.
DOOM was fantastic last year. Day 1 buy as long as it runs half decent on Switch. It runs so buttery smooth on other consoles, it's hard to believe they'd but out a lesser version... Cautiously optimistic
We still don't know if its a good or a lousy and poorly optimized port. I got RE Revelations 2 at Vita and it was a bad port with serious frame rate issues that made the game unplayable at certain points. Lets wait and see. I hope for the better.
The thing is, if these games were announced in this Direct, where is the rest of the 3rd party support announcements? Wolfenstein II isn't released until some time in 2018.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE You make it easy to put words in your mouth when usually all the stuff you say to rip on the Switch runs together like word diarrhea.
You're right they had 2 hit AAA games, but to say nothing else was good is a bit of a slap though. There were other nice things worth having.
If anything this proves that the Vulkan engine Nvidia cooked up which DOOM features on PC lives up to their bragging that it works great on the Tegra setup X1/K1 and above since the Switch doesn't look to be suffering for it.
Oh hey so like if someone were to say that we're all NintenDOOMed it's no longer a slight.
...this and Wolfenstein!...my wallet is Doomed...
@Nintendoforlife "Of course you do anyone who's been on here for the last 7 months has seen it weekly."
Daily. Usually about 3-4 times a day minimum.
Doo....
Ahhh forget it.
This is awesome. I just got this for PS4 and started it last week. Going to stop and sell it and just play on switch. There are more then 10 games I'm getting for switch. Already downloading octopath traveler.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GNoZ6R_XjiU
personaly, I would be satisfated with 720p 60 fps as long as the graphics aren't too much downgraded. But the game needs 60fps
I own DOOM on PS4, Xbox One, and PC because I got the latter two on sale but I might pick it up on Switch just to see how a game like this compares. I have my doubts especially about Wolfenstein but this is cool for people who only own a Switch (which is absurd).
that was a damn awful E3 wasn't it?? Oh no wait it was a Nintendo Direct on a random Wednesday of September!!! To all those who are bitching and whining i would just suggest a reality check, with this direct they announced solid third party support, they showed updates for previously released titles, gave us release dates and footage of Xenoblades and tons of other stuff too... Everyone is allowed to hope (personally i wanted a new animal crossing) but there is a difference between having unrealistic expectations and staying it was a bad direct
"In one of the
biggestfew surprises of today's Nintendo Direct broadcast, Nintendo confirmed that Bethesda's Doom will be coming to the Nintendo Switch in the Holiday season."Fixed.
@Nico85 Not to mention most of this stuff is out between now and the end of the year with much the rest of it in the first quarter of next year. It's a phenomenal amount of A to AAA level stuff coming out in a short amount of time. WiiU never got this, nor did the Wii, the last one was the Gamecube. Selective memory is a pain for people whining about this.
@Nico85 Can you name all the "announced solid third party support" for Switch this evening please? I counted 2 games, one a port, but admittedly a very good one at that.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE you're just being facetious and you know it, the one thing i don't understand is how you can spend so much time talking about something that brings you so little joy. I do not wish to reply to you further
This is the best FPS I've played for a very long time and soon I'll be able to play it at work during my lunch break 😃😃😃
I skip this on PS4, not for lack of interest more lack of time. This is also day 1, now I can KILL demons at lunch.
@Nico85 You don't want to answer because you're stumped and you know it.
On the one hand, this can't be happening, because our resident experts have assured us there is no third party support for Switch.
But it's okay, because as the OTHER resident experts helpfully remind us, this is an old game that everyone has already played on another platform.
Well, good thing I am one of those nonexistent people who didn't own a console in the last gen, so I can still be excited about this.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE No he's just fed up with your crap like most of us. There's no point in arguing with someone who sees nothing but damn near universal fault with Nintendo Switch. It's pointless arguing with someone who posts as you do in almost every news thread on this site. Why waste the time if it will get you nowhere when you can look up the news for yourself?
With this coming to Switch so soon, we better be getting some gameplay videos like tomorrow lol
@tanookisuit I tell you what, why don't you name all the "announced solid third party support" tonight seeing as he's run off crying?
Too f*****' good! This was the sort of port I honestly needed.
@GrayFox666 I don't only own a Switch. I don't have a Switch at all, but if I did it wouldn't be my only gaming system. I also have a Wii U, 2 broken Dreamcast's, and a non-gaming PC. I'm po' folk.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE For the same reason, you're being abrasive and obtuse. You can read this site as well as anyone else. Hell you even gave them surprisingly some credit for 2 of the 3 Bethesda games and DQ Builders. DQB is a bit of a surprise since the sequel was already heading to Switch so it's not getting skipped.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE hahaha you sure are amusing, I'm not going anywhere and i'm definitely not crying. Just not going to indulge you and your bratty attitude.
Sligo people are odd at the best of times.
@Nico85 @tanookisuit You won't answer because you can't answer. Well, you could, but you'd have to admit I'm right. We can't have that now, can we?
I have only ever played the original Doom from 1993. I'll assume this isn't the same one.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Actually yes we can: you are right and I am wrong, as a matter of fact I'm throwing my switch out the window as I type!
Mark Twain once said "never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience"
This coming to the Switch alongside Wolfenstein II helps prove that the Switch is close to base PS4/Xbox One levels of power and can support the games made for those systems.
Granted, the Switch will never compete with the PS4 Pro or Xbox One X in terms of power, but that really does not matter.
At the end of the day, most developers will keep targeting the basic Xbox One and PS4 models because those will be the most common ones.
So, if Nintendo can prove that the Switch can stand up to those systems, then their system suddenly becomes more enticing to third-party developers.
It also means that for the first time since the Gamecube, Nintendo has hardware that is not gimped like the Wii and Wii U were.
@BinaryFragger Haha not doom and gloom for Sligeach?? I won't hear of it! lol
I think we can all agree it's BS that Bethesda didn't release DOOM on Switch in 2016. Thanks for the late port!
@IronMan28 And this is why Nintendo is in last place, etc....
@WiltonRoots Exactly! This is a horrible announcement, I can't believe Nintendo is getting away with it!
@westman98 damn it you beat me to the punch I was gonna say that lol
Hey guys SLIGEACH_EIRE am I right like my comment pls xDDDDDDDDDD
@Caryslan
You might want to wait and see how they run on Switch before you go off on one like that.
@Caryslan "It also means that for the first time since the Gamecube, Nintendo has hardware that is not gimped like the Wii and Wii U were."
What? Not true.
@IronMan28 a year and a few months get it right man
@Nintendoforlife "Guys @gatorboi352 is a troll do not pay attention to any of the opinions you see here."
You know, when you are posting on a Nintendo focused site and your screen name is, and I quote "Nintendoforlife" well you kind of give up your right to call anyone a troll. I mean sure, you can call him a troll, but obviously you are going to have issues with anybody who doesn't agree with you on here. Just saying.
DOOM is a win. It's mature. It's 3rd party. It's a FPS. A few days ago - maybe a week - during that Nindies Direct - Switch seemed to have a lot of genres covered by the little guys. And with Skyrim and FIFA it had sports and AAA open world covered, But no big FPS. (Morpies is 3rd person, so it's a shooter, but not FP.) So while DOOM may be old, and W:NWO may be a late port, they are still 2 big well known FPS. What other FPS does Switch even have? So now it has not 1, but 2. And 1 of them is the godfather of FPS. Halo may be bigger now. And CoD. And Destiny. But still it's DOOM, and this is one of the good ones, they haven't all been great. And Wolfenstein, well it's not DOOM, but it's still Wolfenstein.
FPS. AAA. 3rd party. Mature. And 2 of them. That's a win. I don't care how many copies they sell, I don't own any id or Bethesda stock.
@Nico85 He also said, "Never attempt to teach a pig to sing; it wastes your time and annoys the pig."
I'm clearly wasting my time and as you've stated you're getting annoyed.
@rjejr I don't own stock in Bethesda either, but it stands to reason that if their games sell well on Switch, we'll see more support from them going forward. Moreover, if their games bomb on Switch, then they'll not release any more games on the platform (and rightly so: they're not a charity).
@SLIGEACH_EIRE No I can answer. The problem is there is no winning with someone like you. I either keep quiet and there's nothing third party worth a damn. If I do list games, then you'll say they're not good enough other than what you selectively chosen. It's a stupid waste of time anyone here familiar with you would realize. It's a trap either way with a no win situation.
Nico — Excellent Twain quote.
@sligeach_eire I'm just here for the drama
Definitely gonna pick up Doom on release day. I really love being able to play anywhere, long live the Switch!
Already have doom on ps4 but it's definitely worth getting again just to play it portable, great game.
Nice!
Already have it one PS4, but who cares? This game is amazing. Day 1 for me.
More mature titles on a Nintendo platform... I hope I keep seeing this happening over and over again, for many years.
Doom was shocking to me. How can this game even run on the Switch without melting down? At this point, both Bethesda and Take Two are acting like 2nd parties instead of 3rd. I am blown away right now.
From what i read Doom will run like a dream on Switch. Thats cause
a) Doom is already one of the most ridiculously well optimized games of the past decade.
b) Doom uses Vulkan api.
As i read on reddit:
Vulkan lets a developer tell your graphics card what to draw. It is similar to things like DirectX or OpenGL. DirectX 12 and Vulkan are both taking approaches where the developers are being given more control of the GPU. It means more work for them but at the same time they can better utilize the GPU.
Vulkan on the Switch is nice because that means that code can more easily run on multiple platforms.
Take something like the latest Doom. It has Vulkan support, so porting it over to the Switch would be fairly easy. If there wasn't Vulkan support on the Switch, they would have to rewrite all of the code that tells the GPU what to do.
PS: Another AAA game with Vulcan support is DOTA 2 ( Defense of the Ancients). The game is very complex though and controls would suffer without mouse and keyboard
I never bought either this or Wolfenstein for my PC, but they should make fine additions to my Switch library.
Day 1 buy easily. Played it on Xbox but come on, it's DOOM. 😵
@Ralizah Well yeah sales matter, but I'd rather spend the time now being happy Switch got them and worry about the sales later. After they release.
If Switch is going to keep getting good games - well good is relative I suppose, let's say major 3rd party support - Nintendo is going to have to learn how to put games on sale. These games all drop in price on other consoles months after release, not years like Nintendo does. Wii U launch with full price Mass Effect 3 while the other consoles were getting the whole trilogy for $20. It's up to the company's the release price, but Nintendo needs to let them go on sale soon thereafter, especially for some of these older ports. They don't have to go nuts like Steam, but they can't stay $60 forever either.
Still waiting on the Nintendo subscription service info, could be relevant.
This meme finally makes sense:
@Koudai1979 I did not really mean offense I just find it absurd for people to only own a Nintendo console if they want to experience a fully rounded gaming experience. The same can be said for the other two consoles and PC because Nintendo are the only essential first party in this day and age. I love Uncharted....cant think of anything first party on Xbox thats fantastic, but Nintendo is the only one making VITAL first party games. Only owning a switch though seems kind of crazy I would opt for a PS4 over it anyday if you are can ONLY afford one
@GrayFox666 I'm not offended. I'm kinda like Bruce Bruce (look him up if you haven't heard of him). "If you want to offend me, you tell me Popeyes Chicken is going out of business." lol
In other words, I was just tryin' to be funny. It's true, though, those are the only console's that I have.
HELL YEAH! It's been ages since we have a Doom for Nintendo. Time to kill me some demons this holiday.
OH MY...! More hyped for this announcement than anything so far! Seems appropriate too since Doom was on the N64.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE You were moaning so much during the Direct that it was really more annoying than usual. You should calm down a bit.
HOLY DAMN!!!
This announcement blew me away. I lost it! Why did they not announce this at E3!? The programmers at id really are miracle workers.
@NinjaWaddleDee
Same here. Might trade in my PS4 copy for this!
I hope it sells well! It's not my cup of tea those FPS but I'm impressed!
@dimi
I was thinking that they could scale down the size if they ditched the level editor.
Looking at the footage again, I'd say it will run at 720p / 30 fps. Still don't care. Insta-buy. (Gonna sell my PS4 copy.)
Not a fan of this type of game. I personally won't be buying. I am, however, happy to see the 3rd party support.
I played my only Doom game on the Atari Jaguar um...maybe 2 decades ago? Nah but it's gotta be at least 15 years ago. This will be cool & be like a new game to me. Day 1.
@rjejr I am 95% sure you're joking, so I'm not even going to address that.
@WhiteTrashGuy Yeah I also have the PS4 version. I want this one though for multiplayer on the go lol.
The only thing that could make this any better is if you could unlock doom 64.
The frame rate will determine my decision on this one. I love the idea of Switch getting more titles, but the power thing means there is usually going to be more limits or compromises than other ports. Id want no less than stable 60fps, and fps>resolution IMO (as priorities go).
Sigh Trust some people to bring negativity onto a post that can only be 100% positive news.
I own a PS4 and Xbox One but haven't gotten around to buying DOOM yet so i'm really pleased by this news, and will be getting it for Switch for sure, for a long time now Nintendo's systems have been sorely lacking FPS games, i'd love to see this sell well so we can get even more on the system.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE I've been on here a few years now and I've got to say, you seem to cop a lot of unfair flak over what are for the most part generally realistic appraisals of things Nintendo related.
@Nico85 owned 😂 Best comment I've read tonight- well done
@BradC40 nope it was 22 years ago- hope you still have your jag- gold dust these days
still can't believe the 3DS is going to go its entire lifespan without a classic doom port to it, what the heck id
@SLIGEACH_EIRE I think you got butt hurt.all your post in the last few months dogging the switch, just got crushed in one direct, fact are Nintendo is back, like I said since launch.
@WiltonRoots - Soooo close. Just a few letters short. Save them for the sequel.
@rjejr just to give your heads up the only games on Nintendo that don't get priced dropped are first party titles.
WOW!! Incredible 3rd party news for Switch!! Last time we saw doom on a Nintendo console was Doom 64!! Switch going where Wii U never could go and in only 6 months!! LA Noire, Doom, Wolfenstein....starting to really come together baby!!
@SLIGEACH_EIRE You literally complain about everything Switch-related. Even when Nintendo releases news that addresses those complaints... you still find a way to complain.
@tanookisuit What's the vulcan engine?
@Reignmaker And Super NES and GBA. Also N64 was the pioneer console for shooters as it's not only home to Doom 64, but other shooting masterpiece as well like Turok, Resident Evil 2, Mega Man 64, Perfect Dark, GoldenEye 007, Quake, Hexen, Jet Force Gemini, Star Fox 64, and many others.
@rjejr I imagine third party stuff will drop in price like it does on other platforms. Physical copies, at least. I would like to see better sales on the eshop, though. Steam and PSN regularly have pretty decent sales. I imagine Xbox Live does at least once in a while as well. Nintendo, on the other hand...
Have informed my wife and spawn what I need for holidays this year. Agreed that I will not buy it myself on day one.
Danggg!!!! Havn"t played doom since the SNES version! Can't wait to try it out!!!
In May 2016, I could have never imagined this happening. All I can say is that if Bethesda can bring Skyrim and Doom to Switch and be willing to bring Wolfenstein, too, Capcom and the rest shouldn't have any excuses. I still can't believe that Bethesda is the one making the investment on Switch, but I hope the games sell well enough for Bethesda to stick around.
Awesome. Glad to see DOOM return to Nintendo. Last Doom game I played was 3 back on the original Xbox.
Makes me think even more that Bethesda/ID are making the new Metroid Prime.
@BlueKnight07 I'm now thinking it could make perfect sense for Bethesda to invest on the Switch as a way to expand. I would assume most people really into this type of game would rather play it on PC instead of a typical console, but then this one console is different enough and has enough traction going that they simply can't ignore. Even if the Switch ports don't ultimately sell that well, just the word spreading out about "portable Doom" might be enough for them to try it. I don't know, it's just a thought.
@LUIGITORNADO Duuude, now you got me thinking, don't do that to me!
Very good news, this actually brings variety to the console!
Niiiiice! 3rd party support!
@nab1 Have to agree...pc gamers usually have the best graphics already. Switch is more about portability that wasn't possible before, and I think Bethesda really "gets it".
wow...first time a doom game is on nintendo since the GBA version of doom II
I feel like half the Nintendo offices are just running around going: "Ha ha ha ha, YEAH!"
Well that was unexpected!
@Koudai1979 LOL odd that you mentioned Bruce Bruce, I'm going to see him in two weeks.
Having Doom back to a Nintendo console is great, as well as Wolfenstein. Still, i just don't want old ports of the Switch, I want current stuff like NBA 2K18 and FIFAA18, like Destiny 2 and the new Dishonored game.
People are also quick to forget the huge amount of (dated) AAA games that the Wii U received.
@GamePerson19 It's technical if you're willing to look but these two one is an overview first, second is about a total tutorial on Vulkan Engine which DOOM and Wolf use — https://www.khronos.org/vulkan/ and https://vulkan-tutorial.com/
Basically though it's meant for someone who basically would put the best graphics quality forward as a focus of their game development, almost putting graphics before game (which sounds bad.) It requires work but the reward surpasses the usual opengl/direct3d level stuff. Nvidia uses it as a stock API with their graphics chips, Tegra and the PC based stuff for a couple years now or so. It allows you to eek out far better performance than you'd suspect from what is being offered in your hardware. And unlike others allows co-building to work as is between WIndows, Linux and Android at the same time. Better faster performance from lower overhead is what it can do. This overview here may be easier to follow with the PDF presentation: https://www.khronos.org/assets/uploads/developers/library/overview/vulkan-overview.pdf
I had to do a double take when I saw this on the screen after pulling up this website. Amazing news. DOOM is one of my favorite PS4 games and one of the best pure FPS in recent memory. Great to have it back on Nintendo, no doubt a day one buy just like LA Noire and the Resident Evil Revelations Collection. Need to get behind these third parties putting in the work. Indies are great (Switch already has a ton of phenomenal ones) but the bigger budget stuff is needed too
Actually a bit weird to see the 'Coming Soon' section for a Nintendo Console with FIFA, NBA, WWE, Doom, Resident Evil, LA Noire, Skyrim and Payday 2 listed
@Nolan420....that must suck
Overall a great Direct. I'm happy that DOOM seems to be an announcement that has gone down well. I truly believe that the Switch will be THE place to play multi-platform games in the next few years. The con of being a less powerful is outweighed by portability (at least for me). Also, if you want high-end - why not just play on PC?
@Geeks4Life I'd gladly buy it switch if it's a good version
@Minotaurgamer lets hope. it better have motion controls. would be the only way we can even think about beating the PC crowd
I want DOOM to have motion control aiming like Splatoon.
When I watched the Nindirect I couldn't believe it...
After more than 20 years Doom is back on a Nintendo console, it's like a dream come true.
Playing Doom anywhere with the joy cons and HD Rumble, just sign me up, I want to play this game YESTERDAY.
This is great. Multiplayer death matches will be awesome.
Sure, why not.
According to another source. It comes with all the released DLC!
Though, due to the sheer size of the game, Bethesda said that people who buy the physical edition will only get the Single player campaign on the cartridge and will have to download the rest through a free update, due to size constrains.
I'm most excited by Bethesda's support.
@Minotaurgamer notsureifserious.jpg
Pretty sick. If they include motion controls, i would be tempted to buy it again.
Can't wait for Doom Amiibos btw
I'm waking up to some great news! I absolutely love DOOM. I was obsessed with the original as a kid and scoured every inch of every level on the SNES version. I've recently played the original and DOOM 2 on my N64 via the Everdrive using a hack someone did. Playing Doom on that was great!
From what I've seen of this new version it looks great. Apparently the title screen music was composed using chainsaw noises! You can't get more DOOM than that!!
@GravyThief Oh man... the good old times!
Doom, Hexen, Unreal Tournament '99.
Though, I think at that time, I spend more time in the UnrealEngine level editor to create new maps for Doom and UT99 hehe. What a blast it was.
Nice one, this and wolfenstein suprised me alot. Love me some wolfenstein.
@Jeronan I've never had a PC for games, even now, so every Doom experience I had was from the consoles. I loved the SNES version, and was completely oblivious to how bad the frame rate was. I then loved the PS1 version. But playing the actual full PC WADs for the first two games on my N64 earlier this year was my first time playing all the PC levels in full. Only 20+ years late!
Hope it sells!
Reminds of of Bethesda coming out in the Wii U era, saying Nintendo ignored their advice about Wii U's architecture and ease of porting. A lot on here got mad at them, but this kind of shows they were genuine.
I think a lot of publishers will be watching the sales of this game to judge future Switch support.
I just hope there is no option for the beasts to be wearing Mario's Hat.
Hell yeah! Looking forward to this one, day one buy. Been wanting to play Doom for a while now, but didn't really have anything to play it on. More than happy to see it on Switch!
@rjejr Nintendo doesn't really put their own franchises on sale but they've consistently stated that third parties are free to discount their own products.
Ea was the reason for me3's launch price. Not Nintendo.
It will be very interesting to see how this runs. Doom is a 60fps game, that much is non negotiable, so the visuals will need to be seriously cut back to make it run.
And as an aside, why is a British writer using the term "holiday season"?
So many day one buys! When it rains it pours!! Off topic: Those who complain about limited storage saying its "2017" need to look no further than iphone x. 64gig internal base storage for 3 times the cost of a switch with no expansion for additional memory. Lol
NINTENDOOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMED
Never thought I'd be so happy to type that out. This is seriously great news. I've been wanting this since Skyrim was announced but I thought Bethesda would play the "let's see how that sells" game. But wow, actual genuine 3rd support. It's a concept!
@LUIGITORNADO and the id tech engine for wolf 2 is designed for open world seamless loading... wonder what that would be good for...?
@SLIGEACH_EIRE
Wow that's one of your worst comments.
@gatorboi352 Remember that steet fighter 2 sold well.
Street fighter freaking 2
"Boohoohoo, Switch doesn't have any 3rd party titles and It's gonna fail because Nintendo don't know what they're doing"
cue the "It isn't set in stone" remarks
This and Wolfenstein...very good news. Hopefully there will also be a Retail version.
Okay, both games are from the same developer. But its certainly a start.
@Phazon he is a joke and a switch hater!
Even when he is wrong he won't admit it. I have every confidence we will see more third party announcements over next few months. Gonna be funny seeing him try and backtrack his way out of his previous comments.
@Ryu_Niiyama lol awesome. I hope you have a good time.
@kobashi100
are you [removed] serious??
I love the switch, and I can't wait until Doom, Wolfenstein 2, Mario Odyssey, Kirby Stars Alliance and all the other games come out.
I put my quote in inverted commas to quote all the people who [removed] and complain about Nintendo "not being as good in the old days"
I was around when the master system and nes where still at each others throats and when the original gameboy game out.
Honestly, these little [removed] nowadays who complain 24/7 about everything not tailored to them need to grow the [removed] up!
@timson72 that's the problem when you support different platforms. Exciting news becomes run of the mill. I already have Doom on the Xbox. So do I want it again.
It'd be awesome to see a Duke Nukem announcement now lol. Every time I see a Doom article, it reminds me of the old magazine ad for Duke Nukem 3D saying "Doom rocks, but Duke rules!" Lol
Pretty great announcement and look at the amount of amazing games released or announced in the last 6 months. Two definite purchases.
Wow, incredible news. Weirdly, I had a feeling this would come to Switch. I don't quite know why, maybe because the franchise does actually have a history on Nintendo consoles (on the SNES and N64). While I await with trepidation the follow-up news that it "will feature tacked-on waggle for Switch!" which seems to be the disturbing trend... in any case, I'm super-excited for this.
NintenDOOMED? Lol not even close, this one will def get into my collection.
I love my switch.
@Phazon calm down dude. My post was not aimed at you.
Lots of pointless bickering going on here. I thought the direct was pretty good overall. Octopath looks good doesn't it? Plus two big AAAs being announced is awesome. Hopefully these will sell well and will get more 3rd parties on board. Wolfenstein day 1 for me. Plus come on guys how good does SMO look? I stopped watching because of spoilers. Cannot wait for SMO
Reading this has prompted me to want to play it again on PS4, given I never finished the campaign and enjoyed my time with the MP. Having just popped it in my console, the game is huge - 47GB + a 30GB patch; I wonder how far they'll have to scale it down to fit it on the switch? Awesome news that it's being ported over, but it would have to include the MP to tempt me to pick it up for a second time.
Hell Yes! Was not expecting this!
I wonder what price it will come at though - I have it on PC so don't think I will spend €60 on it.
Tonight at 11...
DOOOOOOOOOOOOM!!!!!
@JaxonH Didn't loyalty matter at all, Jaxon? Didn't we speak of this in regards to Capcom? So what's this then?
@UmniKnight
You don't get it. I buy games that come to the system. I don't not buy games out of spite that other games don't come to the system.
There's a difference.
@JaxonH Loyalty is meaningless in either context. It's expected of us, to show support, yet a company can do what they please. Quite the reverse world we live in.
At any rate, how else do you suggest people let Capcom know that, in the face of this good support from Bethesda, Capcom is looking really lacklustre? How else are people to prove their discontent over that Megaman Collection, the Disney Afternoon Collection, the XX non-localization and the skipping of Okami HD?
@UmniKnight
1 Twitter (which I and many others continue to use to voice our opinions)
2 Buying and supporting the games that do come (like Skyrim, Doom and Wolfenstein 2) to provoke them to jealousy when they see these games succeed
This is terrific news. Now people need to actually go out and buy the thing.
@JaxonH True as that may be, it's unwise to buy third-party games, just for the support of it. It also sends the wrong message to third-parties, as they use those sales to determine if there's a market for more of those likes, and yet part of those sales would be false in that regard.
Can't wait for this. Switch desperately needed more mature titles.
@UmniKnight
No no no. You don't buy games you have no interest in. But you do buy games you're interested in, even if maybe you played it before, or prefer mouse, or can get it cheaper elsewhere. Because otherwise you send a false message that there is no demand. And then no more games come.
If people don't step up and support these games, after years of crying for 3rd party support on Nintendo, and developers as a result pull back, they'll have no one but themselves to blame and I won't wanna hear a single word about it. And I could understand not buying on Wii U, but on Switch there's hybrid motion controls second only to mouse and keyboard, and way more fun if you ask me, plus there's portability so there's no reason to skip these games on Switch.
This is good news but it will be interesting to see how the Switch version compares to the others.
@JaxonH I'm not going to buy a game I won't play. A friend of mine owns DOOM, and told me it isn't good without a mouse, and I trust his judgement.
@UmniKnight
I think millions of people would disagree with that assertion. Because millions of people play it on consoles and even on PC with a controller. There's no such thing as a game that magically stops being fun with a controller. Sure mouse may be his preferred method but that doesn't mean the game isn't fun with a controller.
And your friend, when he said that he was only comparing to traditional controllers anyways. Switch version should have hybrid motion which is way better, and imo better than mouse. Why play on a desk when you could play with legit motion/analog hybrid controls from the living room recliner? But your Friend didn't take that into account because he hasn't ever played Doom with hybrid motion controls on Switch.
@JaxonH Motion controls are VERY subjective. I have a reaction-delay that makes traditional controls with a shooter hard for me to handle, and motion controls aren't my thing, tried those in Splatoon 1, not going there again. A mouse offers precision that nothing else has so far, that is my take on it. And I can see his point when he says that DOOM loses something if that precision is lost.
And yes, he didn't take that into account, because we don't even know if it's supported. People who buy DOOM on Switch, great, but those few of us that won't will not make a difference.
@UmniKnight mouse and keyboard give an advantage in MP for faster aiming etc, Doom is a masterpiece campaign, no k&M required to play it or enjoy it
@UmniKnight I've played doom on pc with a controller and it's brilliant. I battlefield 1 on pc with a controller and still kick ass. This whole mouse/keyboard thing is crap.
@timson72 @ValhallaOutcast Subjective lads, that's the key word here. I've stated my reasoning, and I'll stick with mouse and keyboard, I know others will do the same, and yet others don't care. Those who don't care, will buy DOOM on the Switch. Those who do, will stick to mouse and keyboard.
@UmniKnight so you'll only play doom with mouse and keyboard because your friend said so. How about forming your own opinion.
@timson72 No, because I've got a disorder that reduces my reaction. A slower stick vs a faster mouse, which do you think will have me enjoy things the most? I've played shooters on console before, so this IS my own opinion, but it shows that you don't read all that much do you?
Let me cite where I've said this before, albeit not stipulating my disorder "I have a reaction-delay that makes traditional controls with a shooter hard for me to handle"
@UmniKnight Ok. That's why they have sensitivity settings.
@Nintendoforlife Oh, right. Because I have a difference of opinion from your own.
Sad NDFer.
@timson72 Tried those. Doesn't compare to a mouse for me. Nicely requesting you to respect my opinion and leave it.
Told you before that I've tried those and used them, among others, with Splatoon 1. It just doesn't work as well as a mouse, and so I will stick to a PC for my shooters. Again, I'd like you to respect my opinion on this, instead of trying to convince me of something I already know about and won't change my perspective on. I don't have the luxury to buy 60 euro games to "see if I like it" especially if I know I won't due to the controls.
@kobashi100 Oh it's great. Should have been a thing the day Switch dropped.
@UmniKnight fair enough mate.
Too much to play on my Switch this Christmas!
@Ralizah Xbox Live
Xbox Live seems to have some type of sale every weekend, or free play weekends. I'm not a Gold member so I miss out on some stuff but I check every day, my Xbox 1 is my streaming box. I'm really going to miss it when I trade it in for a Switch. people can say Switch doesn't need apps b/c other devices have them, but when I trade in my streaming box for a Switch, well I need to my watch my CW shows somehow, and it's the only box that works w/ the new Hulu+HBO+Cinemax app. I may have to buy a Roku. Or Amazon Fire, they'll be announcing new ones soon.
Already played it on PS4 but this is very big news for Switch.
I've been saying FOREVER that Vulkan would be the difference on ports like this. No reason this can't be a worth while port and the video looks really good.
Gee, I wonder what time it is!
DOOM and Dragon Quest Builders? Are they looking through my backlog or what?
Great news, but show me the file size first.
But yeah, DOOM is something I've been wanting to play since it looked so fast and violent and different and violent and educaional
but mostly it's violent.
YAY, VIOLENCE!
@gatorboi352 No, I really don't care if others have a different opinion. However, in your case, you choose to spin every bit of extremely good news in a negative light. Everything has some sort of negative connotation in your mind. And honestly I still wouldn't care if this was IGN or Kotaku, but this is a site specifically Nintendo themed. Where the users obviously enjoy Nintendo's games/consoles, and by specifically coming here to tell us how crappy the company we like is you're trolling simple. It's the equivalent to going to a rival sports team forums and constantly calling out the faults of their team. And your response to why your there is "can't I have a different opinion".
I'll admit not too long after the switch released I made a list of basically all modern "AAA" titles from the past 2-3 years that I believed would not come to the switch because they couldn't run on the system. Doom and Wolfenstein 2 were on that list. I can happily say Nintendo proved me wrong and I have never been more excited to be a switch owner. Getting Doom and Skyrim Day 1, Seeing skyrim in the debut trailer was a big thing that sold me on the switch and the posiblity of getting other bethesda titles on the system. I still cannot believe that it's coming true.
I really cant wait for this one. It was awesome on the pc. Also the fact that the multiplayer will be included is nice, It is a fun tdm.
My PC couldn't handle the initial game if I remember right so I didn't get it but heard great things. I'll be picking it up
This is great news, doom and Wolf, this is more like it. Tbh though i am expecting a downgraded version of both games, anything above that is a great bonus, just glad they are coming, now how about a Quake game
@UmniKnight but you didn't state your reason you said "your friend said" if you stated your reason I would have moved along
Now that I can see you stating your cant play shooters at all on a controller I totally get why you are passing on all shooters for the switch
@ValhallaOutcast I probably could, but it would frustrate me, and hence not be fun. And games not fun, aren't much games, are they?
Definitely getting Doom and Wolfenstein for Switch! I have Doom on PC and it is great! I can't wait to see how it plays on the go!! This was a great Direct!! Cheers!!
@UmniKnight agreed I personally am the opposite I cant use keyboard and keyboard and no patience to grind it and get good so agreed video games are a way to have fun and escape real life.
@ValhallaOutcast Well, a PC does at least allow one to change their control scheme to their liking, whether that's a keyboard and mouse, a controller, a joy-stick, a racing wheel or what have you.
Some games just lend themselves better to some control schemes, not barring preference, of course. For example, I'd never play a fighter without a controller/fight-stick.
I played it on PC and I loved it. Didn't reach the end so far, but still, the gunplay is just so smooth and the graphics are impressive. I recommend this game for everyone who wants to play one of the best shooters out there.
Switch is doomed!
@Starbuster
can't wait till call of duty, titanfall, overwatch and other cancerous multiplayer games come out so we can here little shits yelling down the line "get rekt!" "ayyyy lmao bruh" and other cancerous shit?
@Phazon Actually I'm not interested in those titles. Why so keen to put a negative spin on my comment? I actually used to play the original doom solo and I remember enjoying wolfenstein on the original Xbox solo. That's why I was keen for those titles. The only multiplayer Iv really gotten into was Transformers Fall of Cybertron. Never used voice chat and I loved it. I suppose the concept of muting someone offensive is beyond you.
@DK-Fan This is pretty late to say but motion aiming has been implemented in an update.
