Re: Review: Fire Emblem - The Blazing Blade Is Still As Sharp As Ever

Sillyeyepatch

I'm just bad at games (especially older ones) so I won't be playing this despite me wanting to. My first FE was Engage (Loved it) Though I technically bought 3 houses first and it's still in the backlog despite picking it up on release (heh everything is fine)

Though this game looks nice to me. How you feel about a game depends when you grew up/your first experiences with games I I think, and it's not an opinion that can be changed, despite people being vocal about it. (Maybe I'm way off base IDK)

I know I have soft spots for modern GB style games (A vast future and squidlit) because of my time with RBY Pokemon as well as GBA games (Minish Cap and games like this) Though I also adore blocky N64 graphics. They are completely different styles, have aged differently (GBA being the best at being long in the tooth IMO) but I love them all the same because that was my childhood, and you can't compete with nostalgia.

Re: Talking Point: Is Super Mario Bros. Wonder Really A Departure From The 'New' Series?

Sillyeyepatch

TLDR: Yes I think there's a good amount of new ideas here, both graphically and mechanically.

I have a weird experience with 2D Mario. For anyone who has a younger sibling (and wasn't thrilled with that at the time) you will know they obsess over things. My Sister's was 2D Mario. Before her, I'd never even played a Mario game (Nowadays I like 3D Land/World and Odyssey and even saw the movie)

But anyway...SO MANY HOURS were spent playing these games with her, and we both sucked (at least she had an excuse) and she would find it hilarious when we would fail over and over again.

As someone who has played endless amounts of the NSMB games (without ever actually enjoying them) I'd say it's a massive difference.

I'm Still not interested in it though. She'd probably love it but she's a cool grown up now, too busy going outside to be playing games xD

Not to derail the comments but are there any parents that can't stand a certain game now because it's all your kid wants to play with you?

Lots of farming/farming esque games for me this time.
Pre-ordered the special edition physical of A wonderful Life, and also a physical of Pretty Princess Magical Garden Island. Waiting for Everdream Valley to show up on the Eshop so I can snag that.

In non farming games I've pre-ordered SOULVARS already. Tempted by Earthen Dragon and Fall of Porcupine, hopefully some reviews will surface for those soon.

@JohnnyMind
Yeah we were limited at that age, that's not to say I'm not grateful for all the games I was lucky enough to get.

I actually never experienced that, I might have to google. I was a dumb kid when I first played it and so I just got force-married to Celia. Only when I was older and knew how it worked I went after Nami. Celia was my first ever fictional wife xD I don't think you can go wrong with any of them tbh

@ComfyAko And she just so happens to have great teeth, so it's rather fitting xD

Re: Feature: Our Predictions For The June 2023 Nintendo Direct

Sillyeyepatch

Other than reiterating 1,2 Switch, Pikmin and Splatoon DLC I think it will be filled with games we already know about that were announced in all the other showcases recently. That and as deeper dives into things previously announced things like like Fantasy Life, Raincode and Faefarm.

In other wordsI think it will be a Direct for the sake of one. Honestly I was happy not getting one, I'm drowning in games here, if it's a quiet one I don't mind, though I'd sleep well knowing that P3R was happening.

@JohnnyMind
Exactly! :3
Funny enough I have little to no experience for the original FOMT game, I remember that box art so well though so I must have played it. it's weird how memories work. Whatever you saw in shops/game magazines (or the internet nowadays for the young-uns) and what you could convince your parents to actually buy for you shapes so much of your early gaming life.

Yeah its really unique, it forces marriage and kids on you and you and the town will age, it was a first and other than this I doubt it will ever happen again, probably because we live in such a different time now.

In fairness, I never want kids, hate the little buggers but I didn't mind having one in these games, I always go for it if it's an option, but I understand why some wouldn't like that. I'm still trying to decide if I want to play as a male or a female.
I was forced into the male option, as I never got the special edition when you could play as a girl. Would be nice to play as my own gender but at the same time, this holds so much nostalgia that I'm not sure I'd feel right being a girl. I'm after Nami again despite never having the male candidates an an option before xD

People like you are exactly who remakes are for, people that couldn't/didn't play it the first time around. It's wonderful (no pun intended) that more people will be able to play this game.

I think everyone's first Harvest Moon/Story of seasons is so special to them, just a look in the comments of the best ones ranked, everyone's opinions differ so much.

But as biased as I am about how much I love this game, it is an absolute grindfest, and it hasn't been changed much in the remake by the look of it. I'd hate for a modern gamer to have this as their first and feel discouraged by the slow progression especially when games tend to just fire domamine at you from all angles these days. I mean they are all slow to an extent, but this one is a whole nother thing. I'd like them to get a taste for it with an easier one to see if it's for them and once they've had a bit of practice/seen if the genre is for them then they can try the grindier ones and see which ones they prefer.

I personally like my farming games a little harder, a lot of games these days make it all too easy to get more money than you know what to do with really fast, and then you end up running out of things to work for and benching them prematurely. But I do have nearly 20 years of experience under my belt xD

Re: Review: Story Of Seasons: A Wonderful Life - Slow, Old-Fashioned Yet Fulfilling Farming

It was always brutally difficult to make money, I remember chopping down all my grass and selling hay one by one. But for this game and this one only, I'm overjoyed it's a faithful remake, the grind was part of the experience for me, it's like no other game because of that.

The original is one of my favourite games of all time, so no matter what, I will probably look at the game with 10/10 goggles, it is my most anticipated game of the year and with just one week to go it's just too long.

Really good review though!
@KateGray are all the sound effects and music the same? I want even the grating menu sounds to stay as they were, or as close as possible.

Part 2:
Actually, yeah you're right, I guess I had never really thought about it like that. I was a lurker long before I was a member, but there are people I've spoken to consistently that I would almost call friends based on our interactions, but neither of us have outwardly said anything. It's also funny that you notice when someone hasn't been around lately. It's really nice and is definitely one of the better things about sites like this one.

Yeah I don't hold back if a game has problems. My recent grilling of how Cassette Beasts runs on Switch is a good example of that, but I'm glad it helped you. To be fair that was 100% my fault. The Eshop description was very clear on what it was, but still, I didn't expect it to be quite that bad. I buy these sorts of games to unwind for an hour before bed, the sort that most would absolutely scoff at, and not without good reason but I find joy in smaller games and I know you do as well, it makes you appreciate the 10's out there all the more, and they deserve a chance to be played, though my own mortality might prove to humble me on this mindset of mine xD

Anyway, I bought the Miku Jigsaw puzzle for example, was it shovelware? Oh yes but it was well made and even had co-op, had some good music and I spent way longer than I'd care to admit playing it, even roped my partner into helping me complete a few puzzles xD

Thankyou for elaborating on that, it's really helpful but I figure you have to start somewhere, I certainly won't hold it against you if I end up sucking at it xD. I do play games that are 2D and have bullet-hell like mechanics, think like twin-stick shooters where the whole screen is filled with shots that will kill you so I'm hoping that will help a bit, I quite enjoy the zen like state you get where you aren't manually thinking about dodging, your fingers just move the controller on instinct to get out of the way.

Sorry about my absolute word vomit here xD
As I say to anyone I gift a text wall, don't feel the need to reply if you don't want to! x

@FishyS

Whoops.... I did it again, sorry my comment is a two-parter and wouldn't fit it one comment, I like to talk way too much.

Part 1:

Aww thankyou, I didn't really intend it to be, I just love games so it's nice to talk about them with others, that and me rather selfishly wanting to know if something is worth buying, because with games that niche there are very few if any reviews around.

Thing is I don't have any friends really, let alone friends that are as into the Switch as me so I really enjoy reading people's comments, hearing about their experiences, what they are playing, how opinions can be so varied, ect.

I've found many a useful comment on here, usually a couple of days after a review goes live and someone is playing it and giving their two cents on the game, or I've found a game I've never heard of that someone is playing and I check it out, so I'm grateful for that.

I think people are wary of clogging up comments sections, that or they have had their say and now they are done, or maybe just not getting the time to reply to everyone as much as they'd like. Even I can't resist a little snark or joke sometimes but I do try to be constructive as possible.

It's a shame there are so many arguments, but I have mad respect to the team that try to keep it under control, I couldn't do that job. It makes me sad that people with a difference in opinion like someone not liking TOTK for example, get treated really nastily but I digress.

I just really appreciate someone taking time out of their day to answer questions about games I may have, I try to do the same when asked, though I can never keep it concise, I just waffle on for ages it's a character flaw (case and point here) xD

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (June 17th)

@FishyS
Yeah it was such a good little game, I remember wishing there were more when I beat it. I wonder if they added any more content since I last played it.🤔

Glad to hear you're having fun with it! This will be my first punt with the genre really, other than games that have elements of it in their gameplay as a sort of mini-game.

Simplicity is not always a bad thing, and as I said it will be my first foray into the genre so I don't have any expectations, which is a blessing sometimes. Sounds like it has some sense of progression at least, which is good, I wasn't even expecting different weapons to be honest, so that's nice.

Sounds good to me! I don't mind a challenge if I know what I'm getting into (think games that are marketed as hard like Bleak sword, Katana Zero and Hades) but most of the time I'll happily flaunt the fact that I play the majority of my games on easy. By the way you describe it, it doesn't have any cheap tactics and if you screw up, it feels like it's our own fault. I will stay well away from expert though! haha

Yeah honestly the cuteness is what caught my attention in the first place, as shallow as that sounds

Good I think I will grab it then, thanks so much for your detailed reply!

I read comments a lot and I always see you here playing games that most people never heard of, little budget titles and obscure indies. I tend to do the same, check the eshop daily for potential hidden gems that are affordable. Of course the price for this one in particular seems like a no brainer, but (and I'm sure you can relate) when games are so cheap you can end up with a lot of them that aren't even worth that price because they are so bad, like I'll buy this here and that one there and end up with a lot of crud amongst the few gems xD
Not that it isn't worth it though for the ones that are good. My backlog is already over-inflated as it, but if I can cheat a little and ask someone else first then I will xD

After playing Zelda all week (120 hours in now) I'm taking a break to play Paranomasight, I like it so far! Also a few runs on Hades, I've gotten to the third boss, but I swear the first one is still the hardest for me to overcome every time xD

Also playing the game of trying not to spend any more money on the Eshop sale, but I'm losing that, on a bit of a rogue-lite spending spree on there.

@eaglebob345
Don't think we are gonna get our answer, unfortunately. I haven't come across any good ones so far. I'm hoping for the next open world Zelda game they can incorporate horse care somehow, make it into an optional minigame or something. Maybe with a better bond they go faster or something? that's the closest thing to good hors on Switch and I'm not even exaggerating.
