Re: Random: Brie Larson's Boyfriend Said She Was Taking Super Mario Galaxy Too Seriously, So She Threw Him Out

Severian

@ShadJV In general, MCU fans don't read the comics...and the comics fans hate the MCU invasion of the continuity, with Iron Man being the only character who got better because of the MCU since he was a second string character before Robert Downey JR became Iron Man.

I am not much of an MCU fan--it turned a lot of Marvel comics characters into essentially the same writers telling the same jokes and no individual personalities, voices, or distinctions--making them worse than DC where everyone in the New 52 was trying to be the same grim dark Batman--even all-loving Wonder Woman and boy scout Superman. Marvel tends to essentially have a xeroxed character with different powers and checklists for tokenism rather than actual diversity that it needs, though I do appreciate Kamala Khan does represent the Millennial fanfic writer, but that isn't saying much about the rest of her character. She is controversial in some circles in Indonesia, by the way, because she only represents one face of Islam, and where there are variations of Orthodox, liberal, and other nationalist with differences within them as well, each of them has their own reasons for rejecting Kamala since she doesn't spell out the nuances within Islam and doesn't even note the difference between Suni and Shia (or Sufi).

This "everyone is a witty comedian" snarking each other in Marvel basically makes Spider-Man redundant (all the Spider-Men), just like 90s ExTrEmE anti-heroes really failed at capturing the spirit of Spider-Man since like now with the comedian approach, everyone there was a wannabe Snake Plissken (the forefather of 90s antiheroes 9 years ahead of the actual decade).

And yes: politics and comics aren't new--Superman smashing the Klan, Wonder Woman becoming a gay icon (yes, gay more than LGBT), and of course, Captain America himself, who was made as a war propaganda tool. I would say comics are a fantastic tool for political messages since I read a lot of indie and European comics, which I have plenty of recommendations to check out from a journalist in Sarajevo, Filipino mythology, Jodorowsky's science fiction, and French comics about life during the Vichy regime while in the countryside.

Amusing that we're having a friendly discussion and there's so much hate for poor Brie in the other comments. My only issue with her is that she rejects aspects of Captain Marvel's history (the bathing suit for Miss Marvel) for wokeness, without realizing that the zeitgeist before her, actual feminists (not fake social media only feminists) fought for freedom to be sexually liberated and brought about the idea of effeminate women not being anti-feminist, such as with lipstick lesbians in the 90s and riot grrls--even if the character was designed by undersexed artists. Also, I have to keep reminding myself that she's Brie Larson, not Olson...don't look up who that is at work. ^_^"

@ShadJV No problem, my man. If it isn’t fun, why bother talking about it? That’s why when I see fanboy pissing contests here and pushsquare, I roll my eyes because games are supposed to be fun, not cause stress (unless it’s Dark Souls!).

Comics fans are definitely opinionated...😅 I stopped reading DC for the whole New 52 era because I didn’t like the new Lobo or Superman, the absence of Wally West, but I also hated the people crying about the old continuity. Then Marvel threw out their legacy by making their comic characters more like their MCU versions—just recently, the MCU Yondu replaced original Yondu in comics as the original was killed off in his last adventure alongside the new one.

All the attempts to make comics more mass appealing and to have multiple mediums from film to games to even political ideas (present day Kamala Miss Marvel on bus banners in San Francisco as a symbol against hate speech for one) to me has both elevated the medium and over saturated it...and to an extent has made it less about the core fans and more about the mass appeal, which inevitably leads to conflict because everyone feels like they claim ownership over a character or setting.

It’s the sandbox approach: I play with the same toys in the sand, I leave and remember the world my friends and I created, new people come in and make up their own stories and characters, and some people say that it’s cute, others say “Miss Marvel is who she will always be!” or “She doesn’t DESERVE to be Captain Marvel” but my simple reason is that I still have a hard time re-associating things...sort of like Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles or Star Wing and Lylat Wars instead of TMNT and Starfox in certain regions, or how it took me years to stop saying Final Fantasy 3 instead of Final Fantasy 6.

Also, definitely watch the Shazam movie! It was touching to me, especially Billy and the theme of family.

Re: Random: Brie Larson's Boyfriend Said She Was Taking Super Mario Galaxy Too Seriously, So She Threw Him Out

Severian

@ShadJV I never said anything was wrong with you pointing it out. I was just saying I knew about Miss Marvel and the legacy names. 😊 besides: plenty of younger fans i know actually have more vested interest in my generation’s continuity than the present one since my Millennial cousin still complains how Tim Drake isn’t Robin.

Continuities in comics are a convoluted mess anyway and Billy Batson!Captain Marvel is technically still Captain Marvel in comics because the Rebirth continuity avoids directly calling him either CM or Shazam as much as possible, but usually defaults to the latter, especially in the current run.

In other words, the point I make is the names change because of legal issues more than anything else until they can revert back or for rebranding. Marvel Captain Marvel with Carol is not terribly popular in comics still—Civil War 2 and the pathetic attempt to make Inhumans the new X-Men are examples of that attempt to force coolness.

Re: Random: Brie Larson's Boyfriend Said She Was Taking Super Mario Galaxy Too Seriously, So She Threw Him Out

Severian

@ShadJV Oh, don’t give me the “look at the present, don’t get stuck in the past” argument because my response is how Superboy-Prime couldn’t be called Superboy because of the legal battle with DC and Siegel and Schuster before it was settled and he went from being aged up to Superman-Prime and back down to Superboy. 😜

Anyway, I grew up with the pre-Disney, pre-Ultimate universe Marvel and Post-Crisis DC, so that remains my frame of reference and don’t care for New 52s or Marvel #1s every year (except for Immortal Hulk—that rules!).

Re: Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time Has Been Rated In Taiwan

Severian

@DTfeartheBEARD How does triple dipping work? I get double dipping in the sense that I MIGHT understand why having Witcher 3 on Switch and PC for cross saves, but to have Crash on all three console versions and having to replay the game again from start to finish and no save data between versions, I am genuinely curious about what makes someone buy multiple versions of the same game.

If I bought multiple versions of a game, it was rare. Resident Evil 4 on Wii was worth it for motion controls for aiming and the extra content not on GCN. A friend of mine had Street Fighter IV on both PS and Xbox to challenge different friends and players (he also used an arcade stick so controls didn’t matter much).

@Rayquaza2510 I left social media five years ago and people still treat me funny. Apparently in some places, they think you’re a dodgy individual if you don’t have a Facebook. Everyone from someone who runs a business for his gym and markets entirely through social media exclusively told me that I need one, ex-girlfriends told me to go back on so they could tag me in photos, and other friends make fun of me for being the killjoy, even showing this one YouTube parody “The Man without a Facebook.”

I can now see myself further disinterested in AC if it ever becomes a de facto social media network.

Re: Anniversary: EarthBound Turns 25 In The USA, And A Whole Generation Feels Old

Severian

The first RPG I played was Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest, followed by Final Fantasy VI and Chrono Trigger, then Earthbound. Earthbound stayed with me the most because I was turning 13 when the game came out, so Ness and his life in the suburbs and going on adventures was a lot more relatable to me than the fantastic worlds of FFVI and CT--it made me imagine I could be a Goonie and Link in the real world, especially because I loved looking up cryptzoology and studying things like ESP. I was basically living what Millennials and Edgers only know as Stranger Things well from my already longing for the 80s that I brought into the 90s thanks to Earthbound.

Re: Yes, Sega's "Revolutionary" Announcement Is To Use Its Arcades As Cloud Gaming Data Centers

Severian

Well, good for sega and everyone in Japan!

I guess we should consider the context as alluded to in the article that it was big news relative to the reporter in Famitsu and their perspective.

Here, I thought it was going to be Sega announcing a revolutionary partnership with Nintendo or Sony given how close they have been with both companies, Sonic and Mario for Nintendo and their Yakuza games (mostly) with Sony. Oh well.

Re: Lost NES Game Based On A Tom Cruise Movie Has Just Been Recovered From 21 Floppy Discs

Severian

@rjejr I remember using all those storage mediums growing up. When I watch Stranger Things and Ready Player One, my friends and I think that it’s hard to believe we were once those kids in the former and how odd it is to be the “old guys” as portrayed in the latter...or even called “old” by younger gamers addressing us as those of us in the late 30s-early 40s range.

Re: Poll: Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition Is Out Today On Switch, Are You Getting It?

Severian

@Thirteen1355 @the_beaver Yeah, I liked the gameplay, sometimes I loved getting lost in the MASSIVE worlds and the music, but the characters and story of Xenoblade 2 bored me to death--although in all fairness, it's because I came in as a guy who loved Xenogears, missed Xenosaga entirely, and then didn't have a Wii anymore when Xenoblade came out nor did I have a Wii U for Xenoblade Chronicles X. So all I had as reference was Xenogears and its story--which, while some say was convoluted as hell, I thoroughly enjoyed because of the zeitgeist of 90s angst, apathy, and cynicism with its mysticism that transcended that.

I know about the plot twist and connection between XC1 and XC2, but I don't know if it would make me love or be able to finish XC2--I already bought XC2 and the DLC in anticipation that I would love it, but because I didn't, I've stopped just the last couple chapters and couldn't be bothered to play Torna.

So would you say that XC1 made you enjoy XC2 more story-wise and the connection or gameplay-wise?

Re: Rumour Buster: No, Rare Didn't Almost Make Games For The PlayStation During The N64 Era

Severian

Really hard to take GameFan seriously, honestly. This rumor they put there makes my already low opinion of that glorified toilet paper rag even lower. I remember they were reviewing Tomb Raider, and the idiot, Nick Rox, devotes an entire paragraph to why the PlayStation is so great and Tomb Raider is fantastic, better than Super Mario 64, and then said if Tomb Raider wasn't enough to get a PlayStation, then Final Fantasy 7 would.

I repeat: a review for a game becomes shilling for the PlayStation and dumping on Super Mario 64 while pimping FF7. That sounds like an 11 year-old sending a message to his buddies on WhatsApp: absolutely no focus or ability to write coherently.

Rare, in any case, were very pragmatic individuals, and their relationship with Nintendo inspired the loyalty and innovation that made their games great. This is why I love PlayTonic, as they capture the spirit of Rare from the golden days.

Re: Legendary Composer David Wise Explains Why He Wouldn't Have Swapped The N64 For A CD-Based Console

Severian

@Zeldafan79

I am so happy these days that listening to video game OSTs is normal (and even better than the garbage from some films, according to my friends who compose in Hollywood who have appeared in video games too). People thought I was weird for liking the Little Nemo OST on NES and the DKC trilogy soundtrack.

"Why the hell do you have VIDEO GAME soundtracks? You SUBSCRIBED to Nintendo Power so you could ORDER Nintendo merchandise? You're brainwashed!"

"Nah, I just have good taste. "

Re: Legendary Composer David Wise Explains Why He Wouldn't Have Swapped The N64 For A CD-Based Console

Severian

@Zeldafan79 I started out with an N64 and got a PS, and thus began my days as having both Sony and Nintendo after beginning with the NES and Master System, then the SNES exclusively.

My view is that I always play for the games...and I just happen to like Nintendo games best. and coincidentally, the PS1 could have their CD soundtracks, but I found myself finishing Starfox64 to listen to the high scores theme for hours or Wave Race 64 night course.

Re: Platinum Studio Head Doesn't Think Next-Gen Hardware Will Be As "Ground-Breaking" As The Switch

Severian

I received my PS4 as a gift and only finally played it last year because I only cared about Switch games. When I saw the mandatory install and load times plus update, I was furious...until I played Switch handheld while waiting. The regional lockout for DLC with SFVCE angered me too when I bought an Asian region physical edition and the DLC code didn’t work for my US PSN account. It sucks, and while we can have multiple regions, trophies don’t transfer and you can’t switch regions.

I hope PS5 improves this all, but for now, the backlog of PS4 games is why I play now more than the upcoming games on PS5, and even before, I have waaaaaay more Switch games.
