Re: Sakuna: Of Rice And Ruin Update "Coming Soon" To Switch, Here Are The Full Patch Notes

Severian

@JimmySpades "Just don't delete them" doesn't work when I have limited hard drive space and was relying on the cloud to maintain them.

It could be argued that physical games can be stolen, true, but I prefer that agency over my own games rather than having to rely on essentially being "licensed" a game before it disappears.

And if your system is stolen or you're locked out of an account (which has happened), the physical games can still be played in a new system even if the saves are gone.

But this isn't a thread about digital versus physical, and those who belong to the digital tribe, good for all of you. I'm part of the physical tribe because I grew up on it and will choose physical whenever possible, unless there is a significant discount, THEN it makes sense for me to pay $2 for a game that is $30 digitally.

Re: Sakuna: Of Rice And Ruin Update "Coming Soon" To Switch, Here Are The Full Patch Notes

@TheFullAndy

I disagree. A game can be delisted and not be made available as has commonly been discussed and this alone influences my desire for physical copies.

That said, physical games are not perfect because the full game is not always on the cartridge and requires an additional download or patches end up taking a lot of space anyway, like Splatoon 2 now being 5GB of memory in my system.

In spite of all this, the physical medium is my preference most of the time.

Re: Random: Family Video Closes Its Doors After 42 Years

Severian

@Omarzy Thanks for making this observation--it's really disgusting and disappointing that this has happened.

While video game sales are up, I also find that free-to-play games and lending games has helped some neighbors and friends in coping with this.

There was someone I added to my ignore list here in the comments last year who claimed that people who can't afford video games shouldn't be given consoles or games as gifts, somehow forgetting that video rental stores like Family Video, Hollywood Video, and Blockbuster were chains that allowed some people who essentially could only rent, not own games.

While there may be more options like the Xbox Gamer Pass or free to pay and free to play games, renting video games was an escape for many people I knew in the 90s who didn't have the luxury of buying a title, especially as games get more expensive.

It's also really crucial in places where Internet isn't so great as to download a game or stream it, and the same goes with streaming movies and television.

@nessisonett Hey, people are watching GoPro videos online to vicariously experience roller coaster rides, so this is a way of making the world after the pandemic a lot more exciting. It's like watching a commercial for food and then running to the restaurant the next day: that anticipation and craving makes finally going there all the more satisfying.

Re: Feature: Why Open A Video Game Shop During A Global Pandemic?

Severian

@JayJ I saw the same with independent bookstores making a resurgence after Borders closed in the US and people got sick of Amazon. Community is a big thing, though not to say some GameStop stores were without it because I knew a couple branches where they knew their customers’ names and interests. Those branches got screwed by corporate because they were seen as non-essential even if the numbers back in 2008 showed they were big earners in the region (Los Angeles). But, corporate decisions don’t make sense sometimes when the suits are disconnected from their workers and worsened by middlemen audits who do analyses and don’t even understand what they’re looking for or looking at when making recommendations to corporate.

Re: Switch Becomes The Best-Selling Console For 24 Consecutive Months Despite PS5, Xbox Series Launches (US)

@Ambassador_Kong He probably is trying to be original but can’t get around the already tired old trope of deconstruction that works only if you remove any question marks from conjecture and state things with absolute authority. It eliminates all discussion and becomes a means of forcing a silly idea with no proof while grasping for straws to force it.

I think he is confusing Mark Twain for someone else or he is just repeating the nonsense he heard from some untenured teacher trying to remain relevant with absurd arguments for their failed thesis who is using their students as guinea pigs to see if they will believe such nonsense in hopes that the department will buy it too.

Re: Switch Becomes The Best-Selling Console For 24 Consecutive Months Despite PS5, Xbox Series Launches (US)

@TG16_IS_BAE Friends have all sorts of roles and impacts. In this case, you’re the kinda friend who comes to the lunch table saying silly things who amuses the rest of us as we either roll our eyes or play along because we see you’re able to offer more than just bad arguments (that you don’t support or finish) or being a poor sport when you realize you put your foot in your mouth (again) .

Merry Christmas, dude!

Re: Switch Becomes The Best-Selling Console For 24 Consecutive Months Despite PS5, Xbox Series Launches (US)

Severian

@TG16_IS_BAE For someone who loves to argue, you sure are terrible at it. 😁 but your own self-professed knowledge is about as useful as a homeless guy telling others he can make them millionaires: wishful thinking from someone whose own actions speak volumes.

My original statement about Switch sales was never something you were interested in talking about because you can’t argue your way out of a paper bag or even go to your silly insistence about Mark Twain.

Hope your holidays are pleasant! 😁

Re: Switch Becomes The Best-Selling Console For 24 Consecutive Months Despite PS5, Xbox Series Launches (US)

Severian

@TG16_IS_BAE Next thing we hear from you besides another straw man argument putting words in my mouth, factual error stating things that aren’t true to refute what is, ad hominem attacks insulting someone instead of the point made, and ad infinitum broken record repeats of the same dead argument will probably be when you insist that the earth is flat and that Australia doesn’t exist because they’re just Hollywood actors who made a fake accent (fun fact: flat earthers really believe this).

Re: Switch Becomes The Best-Selling Console For 24 Consecutive Months Despite PS5, Xbox Series Launches (US)

Severian

@TG16_IS_BAE LOL 😂 someone got off on the wrong side of the bed this morning with a crummy response like that. Whether they want a Switch Pro now or later is irrelevant, it’s that it will be counted towards that total.

Also, white supremacist author? I think you haven’t read a lot of Mark Twain then....not that it matters because an ad hominem doesn’t change the fact that the point made is worth considering.

I recommend that you go back and get some rest so that your responses are a little more chummy rather than crummy, or else I shall be forced to conclude that like the guy who drops his phone in the toilet after continuously starting arguments on the Internet fails to realize that his priorities are wrong when he also has no toilet paper, you aren’t paying attention to details because your mind is in the wrong place.

Feel better soon, chum. You’re a lot nicer usually.

Re: Switch Becomes The Best-Selling Console For 24 Consecutive Months Despite PS5, Xbox Series Launches (US)

Severian

@TG16_IS_BAE Nintendo will always prepare for the next generation or iteration like any console manufacturer does. Whether they release a dozen versions with upgrades of the Game Boy or DS and 3DS or an entirely new set of hardware will be something to consider.

3DS and all its variations from original to 2DS and the XL? Technically the same system and sales figures, which a Switch Pro would do too.

Like the PS4 and PS4 Pro are still essentially the same line with the sum total sales figures together, the numbers will come together.

My favorite quote from Mark Twain: "There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics."

Re: Developers Of The New Perfect Dark Will Treat It "Very Carefully"

Severian

@ChaosBadger777 treat a console like a hometown and that is one reason they think that way.

Some countries it makes no sense because the Switch is more expensive, so it’s cheaper to get a PS or Xbox. To be a Nintendo fan in places like the Philippines or Brazil requires significant income to afford it, so practically speaking, it’s expensive to be a fanboy....but people still are fanboys like when the iPhone releases a new model.

Priorities...

Re: Developers Of The New Perfect Dark Will Treat It "Very Carefully"

Severian

@ChaosBadger777 Not necessarily. The mind of a fan is that of betrayal or abandonment rather than their ability to afford another console. Example: when Square moved FF7 to the PSX, a friend of mine was outraged and hated Sony even more.

It should be noted he was the first person among us to buy a PSX, and yet when FF7 came out, he played it and said he hated every minute of it wishing that it were on Nintendo 64 instead and Sony never stole what he felt was "our" series.

Another example: a friend hates the L.A. Chargers football team. Even if it's the same players, he hates them because they're no longer the San Diego Chargers and he no longer has his hometown team to root for in American football.

Re: Monster Hunter Movie's Chinese Premiere Reportedly Cancelled Due To Racist Joke

Severian

@WaveWitch Context is important, but people don't look for that, they retrofit "Woke" into everything.

Anything can be offensive, but the real question if it is actually HARMFUL.

Double-standards and tunnel vision also apply if they complain about this grandpa joke being racist, but everyone acting offended ignores the genocide for Uighurs that is an actual thing being done by the CCP.

Welcome to the 21st century, cupcakes.

Re: Monster Hunter Movie's Chinese Premiere Reportedly Cancelled Due To Racist Joke

Severian

@shaneoh yeah, anything and everything can be considered “offensive” but the question I rarely hear asked is if something that offends someone is HARMFUL.

The clip of the alleged offense didn’t even register to me as racist because I heard worse hurled at me and that sounds like something my elementary school teacher would say and the whole class (which had a lot of Asians including yours truly) would roll their eyes at such a corny joke.

It’s easier for people to say they are offended and to use overtly general and circular arguments than to actually spell out how it’s harmful.

Re: Monster Hunter Movie's Chinese Premiere Reportedly Cancelled Due To Racist Joke

Severian

@wsli I saw the joke and I remember it. I’m probably going to be the worst Asian here because I’ve got thick skin about this and it doesn’t bother me, but unfortunately, the younger generation tends to be more eager to follow the mantra “I suffer, therefore I am” and believe that the magic words to get whatever they want isn’t “please” or even “would you kindly”, but “I’m offended”.
