Re: Pokémon Home Details Revealed: Free And Premium Plans, National Pokédex And More

Seacliff

A single Pokemon's data is roughly a 1/4 of a kb, making 6000 Pokemon is just about 1.5 mb. That's one-ten thousandth of the storage space Google offers for free.

1.5 MB is so small why is it even a cloud storage to begin with? That could have just been allocated into the application itself, which is likely hundreds of times larger than that anyways. Accessing your bank from other Switches is really situational and could have been done through cloud saves, and the only reason to access from your phone is for GTS, which was a feature that should have been in the main game.

Long story short, saying this is excusable because it's a service make sense, because the only reason this is a service is so that it could be charged like one.

Re: Poll: Are You Happy With Smash Bros. Ultimate Challenger 5?

Seacliff

Byleth is fine as an addition, but he should have kickstarted the next DLC pack, rather than be the finale for the first.
Off the toes of four, seemingly impossible additions, he's underwhelming.

My biggest issue with FE reps is not the whole 'generic anime swordsman' complaint, but the fact they only represent what's currently popular in the franchise. Outside the Smash community and just in the Fire Emblem community Ike and Roy aren't very relevant and the Awakening characters are losing relevance as Three Houses is becoming the new gateway into the franchise. Byleth is only going to be relevant until the next Fire Emblem game.

Re: Skies Of Arcadia Dev "Really" Wants To Make A Sequel

Seacliff

I think the game should get a remake first.
The base game is great but has some elements that didn't age favorably. Battle system and movement was slow, and there were high encounter rates even during some puzzle segments.

None of this sounds like an overhaul. I would really like to see them port it.

Re: One Of Pokémon's Largest Fan Communities Bans Dynamaxing In Competitive Matches

Seacliff

@Passive_Mewtwo This is something a lot of people don't talk about when comparing Megas to Dynamaxing/Gigantamaxing. In a lot of cases, using certian items would be just as viable of an option, and in other cases a more viable option, than using a Mega Evolution. There was some opportunity cost when deciding if a Pokemon should run as your team's mega.

There's no tangible opportunity cost for Dynamaxing. You are at a disadvantage if you don't use it at any point in a battle.

Re: Reggie: Nintendo's Diagnosis Of The Industry Before Wii Was "Too Much Complexity, Too Many Sequels"

Seacliff

Sounds more like today than back then, honestly.

I thought Generation 6 of consoles was one of the most unique Generations, even if we limited the look at Nintendo and the Gamecube alone.

Sequels from games of the prior generation, like Mario Sunshine and Wind Waker, changed enough to be barely considered sequels.

If they didn't reinvent the wheel then they only got a single title on the Gamecube, like Fire Emblem, F-Zero X, or Super Smash Bros Melee.

Then you had games like Metroid Prime and Luigi's Mansion, which were from older franchises yet experimented with new genres and gameplay elements.

Then there were new IPs like Pikmin, not to mention third-party titles like Super Monkey Ball, Baten Kaitos, and Viewtiful Joe.

And that's just limiting that console generation just the Gamecube. Sega, Sony, and Microsoft all both created amazing new IPs as well as new takes on older franchises for their consoles as well.

I think Regie's statement makes sense with Mario Party though. That had four titles on the Gamecube. Way too much.

Re: Axed Pokémon Are Being Added To Sword And Shield By Industrious Modders

Seacliff

@Yorumi I agree with this.
If I heard prior to this game's announcement that it would feature less Pokemon than XY, I would have anticipated an overall for the battle animations. Making the turn-based combat look much more lively.

The game as it is now doesn't really feature anything that I wouldn't imagine not being there regardless of Dexit.

Re: Video: Digital Foundry Delivers Its Verdict On Pokémon Sword And Shield

Seacliff

Game Freak really needs more time for these games, these kinds of issues (as well as the issues with Little Town Hero) makes me fear that there were massive crunch periods during development just to get it out for the holidays.

That goes against what Nintendo's want for their own development team, even though Game Freak isn't 100% owned by Nintendo, their actions will still be reflected through Nintendo. So I really hope this isn't the case.

Regardless if it's true or not, I still vouch for longer development time for these games. If longer periods of having no Pokemon games hurt the franchise, then bring back spinoffs, it's been three and a half years since the last non-mobile Pokemon spinoff.

Re: Round Up: The Pokémon Sword And Shield Reviews Are In, And It's Not As Bad As You Feared

Seacliff

@shoeses Speaking of which, Explorers of Time/Darkness,Sky, a game pretty well-loved, had some really critical reviews.

IGN gave that one a 4.9/10.

But I can't say I'm surprised, that game had a larger focus on long-term dungeon crawling, which leads to resource management with the game asks you to keep a healthy stock of food and healing items, and because of the dungeon crawling, simply using moves are at a premium. The game encourages you to use moves at the most opportune moments rather than for the sake of damage.

And since the game relies on RNG any lack of skill a reviewer has that causes them to fail at any of the above elements of the game design allows them to simply blame it on the game itself.

Meanwhile, SwSH is a less than 20-hour game that requires no real thought for competition, turn-based combat that has no sense of stress with long-term dungeon crawling or resource management, and plenty of instant gratification.

This is as review-friendly as it gets, with or without the bugs.

Re: Soapbox: Attacking Pokémon Creator Game Freak Isn't Cool, But Biting Back Isn't The Answer

Seacliff

Pretty sure the average NatDexer hates the people sending death threats as much as anyone else.

They get lumped together and it's used an excuse to not take the criticism seriously.

Recently leaked streams show a lack of polish. I'm not going to link here for the sake of spoilers, but some major examples are that models have been models poping in and out and tons of locations lack battle backgrounds. Haven't seen this level of cutting corners in any Nintendo game in years.

Re: Negative Feedback Gets Us Down But Must Be Taken On Board, Says Pokémon's Junichi Masuda

Seacliff

@Xansies Maractus, Trevenant, Abomasnow, Avalugg, Vespiquen, Drifblim, Garbodor, Galvantula, Gigalith, Golisopod, Heliolisk, Noctowl, Lanturn, Liepard, Mantine, Mudsdale, Seismitoad, Vanilluxe, Vikavolt, Wishiwashi, Quagsire, Toxicroak.

These are all confirmed Pokemon that are listed as NU (Never used) or lower in the competitive rankings. Including evolutions, they take up about roughly 50-60 slots alone.

Not denaying these Pokemon have fans, I personally really like Quagsire and Vikavolt, but eliminating weak Pokemon is definitely not a goal of the cut.
