@Bizzyb Nothing isn't evidence of something. This isn't the first year where we start January knowing virtually nothing throughout the year.
Us knowing about Tears of the Kingdom and Prime 4 years before their release are outliers. Most Nintendo titles tend to get announced within a few months of their release. Last year alone Xenoblade 3, Pokemon SV, Nintendo Switch Sports, Fire Emblem: Three Hopes, and Mario Strikers Battle League were all announced the same year they were released. All of these announcements were in February, almost all of which were the 2/9 direct (Pokemon had its own trailer later that month).
As for hardware, Nintendo tends to publically announce the project titles of their hardware about two years before they actually release. We knew about the Switch as "NX" since June 2015, the Wii U as "Project Cafe" since early 2011, the Wii as "Revolution" since 2004, etc.
We don't even have a hint about a successor from an official source. And when we do, chances are it's going to be at least a year until we actually see what ever codename project they go with actually looks like.
People who think that Zelda: Totk will launch alongside a proper Switch successor are setting themselves up for disappointment. They are not going to announce and release a new console in the span of four months.
Sure, that was the timeframe between the Switch's announcement and release, but that was two years after the 'NX' was publically known, and this comparison still only works if the Switch's successor is announced this week.
@Serpenterror On top of what BlueBCA stated, getting the Master Sword with as little as 3 hearts was discovered a couple of years ago and was never patched out.
BOTW has never been updated since that Labo update almost four years ago.
I highly respect this game for purposefully not including expected RPG QoL features like instantaneous fast travel that would impede the gameplay loop. If some reviewers even a smidge of tension "tedious", then so be it.
Despite the game's low difficulty, not being able to instantly return to safety for free has me actually thinking about where I should go and interact with the level design.
I'm glad that the old Dungeon Crawling loop isn't completely dead to the eyes of bigger publishers like Square.
Can't help but imagine a timeline where Legends came out Holiday 2022 and this was Holiday 2023.
If nothing comes out 2023, then there was no benefit for rushing this game and releasing two Pokemon games in one year. This game is straight-up undercooked from a technical perspective, and that's a shame because it's otherwise the most fun I had since Gen 5.
I'm enjoying it, but seeing 9/10 levels of praise of it is confusing.
I think "Tough but carefully balanced difficulty" is the part I disagree with the most. Every platforming challenge is solved with a Double Jump. There isn't particularly much depth with the platforming. The difficulty is mostly only increased by making platforms smaller.
Love the visuals though. So many games tout a "32-Bit" look, but this one actually does manage to give that aesthetic justice with a better understanding of the hardware limitations of those consoles.
@AstroTheGamosian Well, they still haven't announced any series to continue with Gen 9 yet. Normally we get the news of a new series months ahead of time. So this really sounds to be the case.
Also, the final episode title is called "Pokemon: I'm glad to have met you", giving some... implications.
@Hungryluma Such as? All I can think of for 3D Platformers in the 7th Gen is Mario, Sonic, and Ratchet. All of which and much more existed in the 2010s. A decent chunk listed by Not_Soos were late 2010 titles.
SEGA has been doing this every year, and it's gets more and more disingenuous each time.
Though I can't blame them for doing it. Ever since the Genesis, Sonic titles have struggled to surpass more than a couple million in sales unless he's at the Olympics with Mario.
@Truegamer79 Nintendo is often very good about keeping consistent framerate in their games. Heck, they were basically the only ones prioritizing it on the Wii when everyone else was doubling down on visuals when transitioning into HD.
Mario is basically the staple of 60 fps, and in particular, has been very focused on 60 FPS since the Wii. Galaxy, 3D World, and Odyssey are all a very stable 60 fps.
Now, I'm not picky about a turn based game like this being 30. But there's no need to throw all that legacy under the bus.
@TheBigK Prior to Breath of the Wild, Nintendo has often been very good about solid framerates.
They felt like the only ones actually aiming for 60 fps back during the Wii when devs on the PS3 and Xbox 360 were pushing graphics way too hard to even achieve a consistent 30 fps.
Mario Galaxy, Prime 3, Smash Brawl, Sin & Punishment 2, Donkey Kong Country's Returns, Mario Kart Wii, Punch Out. All 60 fps and aged better for it.
Flynn being involved alone is the reason why the story is the least of my worries about this game. Having read IDW, I have no doubt this will be the best Sonic story in the video game canon.
@Axecon Nintendo had no involvement with Lost World beyond an exclusivity deal.
If it's about any comparisons in the credits, SEGA members transitioning to working at Nintendo is a trend that's been going on for roughly 13 years now.
Given how these games kind of popped up on the internet one day and is seen as a collective fever dream, I kind of had to condition myself to believe that there were actual voice actors behind these characters.
@Orpheus79V The games have adjusted physics that makes intentional tricks no longer possible.
For example, if you immediately roll at the start of marble garden zone, you'll be naturally carried to a secret area with a hidden monitor.
In Origins, you build too much momentum and hit the ceiling, which makes the area incredibly tricky to enter as Sonic.
I'll admit that many of the fan patch notes list above are minor individually, but stating that the compellation has "No Issues" is taking it to the exact opposite extreme.
Think I'll pass. There isn't much here that wasn't already achieved with the other Whitehead ports over/nearly a decade ago, not to mention this barely scratches legal fan projects like Sonic 1 Forever, Sonic 2 Absolute, Sonic CD Restored, and most notably Sonic 3 AIR and... that already covers all the content this game provides for twice the asking price.
While the new recent gameplay footage is a noticeable improvement over what they showed before, that shouldn't excuse the horrendous marketing up to this point.
They have a build that represents the final product prepared, so why did they show gameplay from a build that will be over a year old by the game's release?
Why did they show janky gameplay like the awkward physics causing Sonic slipping off the giant's robots fingers when they have 100% control over what they can or can't show?
People fail to "understand" things because of poor communication. The prior marketing for this game communicated things VERY poorly.
I guess actually fighting robots is a step up from lines and lines of mooks that did absolutely nothing in Forces, but this is the exact opposite problem.
It looks tedious. If these were one-off mini bosses that's one thing, but random enemy encounters taking over a minute to input the same line of actions? That just sound monotonous.
I miss the days when the core appeal of the "Action/Adventure" genre was about following an exciting storyline that unfolds as you travel to a wide variety of locations, rather than being about messing around in barren grasslands.
Looking good. Miss the days of B-Tier Platformers on the PS1 and PS2 and glad to that even one of the most obscure faces from that era make a comeback.
Going to get this on PC though. But glad the Switch port seems competent.
Atlus: Do you want more games on Switch? Everyone: Yes. Atlus: Okay, but do you want more games on Switch? Everyone: Defiantly. Atlus: But just to be sure, do you want more games on Switch? Everyone: Just do it already. Atlus: Do you want more games on Switch?
While the new voice does feel a tad off, it's just a short tease and could be the direction at fault more than the voice actor himself. I'll wait for something substantial before I really judge anything about this show.
Rather then simply porting the roms, they desperately need to properly rereleased as a collection. Many of the issues I have with these games could have been fixed with a larger native resolution.
The amount of screen real-estate the genesis provided to see surrounding level design was a little over twice as much as the GBA, as a result, I feel like playing the Sonic Advance games to be cramped in comparison. Doesn't help these games have a lot more bottomless pits than the Genesis games do.
Personally, this leads me to believe even more that BOTW 2's delay was for scheduling/marketing reasons over quality assurance ones.
That's two games that would have a huge influence on Q4 sales that have been moved to early Q3 and Q1 next year, leaving few big holiday releases beyond Pokemon. I think this hints at an unannounced Q4 game being announced soon.
At the very least, I don't know why else they would push a game's release date forward. A subtle schedule change announcement will reach less ears than the original Nintendo Direct reveal, which will lead to confusion among more casual switch players not closely following gaming news sites. And while I can't say I know what happens behind the screen, pushing a release date forward so close to release sounds like a manufacturing nightmare, that's million of switch cartridges with pre-planed shipments that have to be changed as well.
I don't see why they could cause that chaos and confusion unless it's in service to something with greater marketing priority. That's my two cents, at least.
I get that they'll be slightly updated, likely comparable to the mobile releases of the classic game, but I agree with others that this looks lacking compared to past compilations. Though finally getting Sonic 3 again after a decade is cool.
I would have liked to see the 8-Bit titles. Chaos and Triple Trouble are very overlooked titles.
BOTW 2 was only delayed by a few months, I highly doubt that's enough to justify putting aside even more time and resources, however small, for a rerelease.
@Cross_eyed_oni I much prefer a game with random encounters than the plethora of touch encounter games where enemies moves faster than the player and gets initiative by touching the player from behind.
Many of these games also have enemies patrolling narrow hallways, making them impossible to avoid. To quote yourself, "if I am of a high enough level to complete an area, I shouldn't be forced to sit through the tedium of any more" - poorly placed touched encounters.
I swear I never seen anyone talk about how good a touch encounter system has been implemented in a game outside of Persona 5.
If poorly implemented, it's arguably more frustrating to play than random encounters. Players rarely complain about it because they truly believe a barely functioning touch encounter system is better than any random encounter system.
1000% believe this is to avoid overlapping releases with the already packed Late-Fall and Holiday lineup more than a Quality Assurance decision. I doubt they'll spend that time sitting on their hands, but I'd imagine only so much can be changed about the game in the three or four extra months they gave themselves.
Almost 100%'ed Forgotten Lands. I think I like Robobot a bit better and juggling it between Super Star, but it's very much one of the best in the franchise in my opinion.

Re: Review: Lunistice - A 32-Bit Platforming Dream That Gives Sonic A Serious Run For His Money
@Funneefox Agreed. The comparisons to Sonic also exist in Steam reviews, which is confusing, as this game doesn't play anything like Sonic.
I guess it's the Grind Rails? I mean, that was a thing half the 3D platformers were doing by the early PS2 days, but that's all I can really think of.
Just recently got the true ending on this title though and it's a fine game. Definitely worth it's its asking price.

It probably cost them pennies to keep this service running anyways.
