Re: Fire Emblem: Three Houses Patch Revises Sensitive Dialogue

Seacliff

It just comes off a vague now.
Like, if I was playing this for the first time I wouldn't fully understand Bernadetta's Father intent with tieing her to a chair.

'Submissive' and 'Quite' were the biggest keywords in the sentence, you read it and see the negative intent of her father's action.

Now the text just translates to 'To be a good wife, tie yourself to a chair.'

Re: We've Re-Translated That Pokémon Sword and Shield Interview Quote

Seacliff

This is... troublesome if it is the correct translation. As others have stated, this is probably worse than actually porting the models, with the case of Gyarados, you can see that would mean they even replicated the low-poly whiskers.

My biggest problem is that this isn't something I recall any prior dev stating they have issues with. There are several 3DS ports/multiplats on the Switch such as Monster Hunter XX, Hyrule Warriors (All 3 versions use the same models), Captain Toad, and Alliance Alive. None of these devs mentioned anything about recreating all the 3D assets from scratch... which you would think might have popped up in an interview at least once between a dozen games?

Or any port ever, for that matter, unless it's a case like Kingdom Hearts where all the original files were lost.

Re: Game Freak Isn't Reusing 3DS Models In Pokémon Sword and Shield

Seacliff

As someone with a couple of years of 3D experience, seeing so many people making uneducated and false assumptions about 3D Models/Animations make my head hurt.

If I see phrases like 'coding animations' or 'cel-shaded models' I might go back into depression.

If anyone is really unsure about how processes like these work, don't make assumptions. Skim through tutorials on commercial 3D software, or play around with an open source software like Blender to get a better understanding of how the technology works.

If you have no interest in the technology to begin with, that's fine, just don't contribute to that side of the argument if you don't actually know what you are talking about.

Re: Game Freak Isn't Reusing 3DS Models In Pokémon Sword and Shield

Seacliff

@Octorok385 There are plenty of things that can be done in-engine to alter visuals that do not involve even touching the models themselves. Cell shading just is a rendering technique, not something inherent to the models themselves.

In fact, the majority of the graphical differences between Gen 6/7 and 8 is the fresnel rim lighting, shaders, changes in rendering style, and resolution. Remove that and you have pretty much the same models and textures.

Re: Game Freak Isn't Reusing 3DS Models In Pokémon Sword and Shield

Seacliff

This implies that they have proven to be incompetent by failing to future-proof the Pokemon models like they have intended to do since XY... which considering how versatile 3D models are between engines I can't wrap my head around.

And proceded to create models and animations to be exactly the same as they were on the 3DS.

Honestly claiming they are lying is better for their image if the above really is the case.

Re: Level-5 Announces Yo-Kai Watch 4 Western Release At The 2019 Anime Expo

@Kalmaro In this game it goes both ways for this kind of game though. While roughly 100 characters with varied playstyles is great for an action game like this one

it also means that there are less than 100 enemy types to fill the dungeons, streets, and alleyways. Which is really limiting for a JRPG.

I still really like the game though. Anyone interested in knowing more about it can read my (rather a length) posts on the YW4 thread in the forums on this site.

Re: Soapbox: Why Sword And Shield's Pokémon Purge Will Benefit Everyone

Seacliff

@Yorumi There's a possibility that porting the models over to the Switch is harder than using them on the 3DS, but that's all the more reason to make sure SwSh has all the Pokemon.

If they get it done now, either through a post-game update or otherwise... then they don't need to do it again. At least for the rest of the Switch's lifespan.

Re: Soapbox: Why Sword And Shield's Pokémon Purge Will Benefit Everyone

Seacliff

@Ralek85 It's not so much about the quantity as much as that the fanbase recognizes that each Pokemon has its fans.

Millions of people only play Pokemon JUST for the Pokemon. They want to go on an adventure with their preferred team of Pokemon. If it was for deep battle mechanics I'm pretty sure everyone would have jump ship to SMT or Digimon over a decade ago.

Re: Soapbox: Why Sword And Shield's Pokémon Purge Will Benefit Everyone

Seacliff

@Ralek85 No one is advocating for a crunch. That's a very warped perspective on the situation.
If they had to delay the game or were clear about a post-game update, people would be fine with it. And this is to take into consideration that a development team of a franchise worth more the MCU should have the budget to outsource this sort of thing.

Re: Soapbox: Why Sword And Shield's Pokémon Purge Will Benefit Everyone

Seacliff

I would have been fine with the cut, but I was already spectacle of the game's quality since it was first announced. From a presentation standpoint, this is only a LITTLE better than playing Sun/Moon in HD on an emulator and a couple of patches.

I was already making fun of the animation and textures before the dex cut was even a thing.

The 'open world' situation is also taken out of proportion. The Wild Area is a neat idea, but from a progression, standpoint looks more like a glorified Hyrule Field in pre-BOTW Zela. Semi-open world at best.

Just throwing this in for comparison, but Yokai Watch 4 just released in Japan, it launched with only 109 monsters (compared to the 600+ in Yokai Watch 3) Some people did take issue with that, but the overall responses of the game are still between mix-to-positive. Why? Because the game greatly improves on the visuals and animation compared to the 3DS games, and also has an entirely new Action Battle System built from the ground up. What's more, Level-5 confirmed that they'll bring back Yokai in future updates.

Re: Random: PETA Makes Woolly Statement About Sheep Pokémon Wooloo, Backlash Ensues

Seacliff

Sheering sheep is beneficial to the sheep. Overgrown wool can cover their eyes and blind them, cause them to suffer from heat exhaustion in the summer, get caught or tangled in the wild, and even prevent them from using the bathroom.

To be fair, the wool grows so long because humans breed them this way over the course of thousands of years... but even then it was still beneficial for the sheep. They are natural prey, and shepherds protected them from predators when they are under their care.

Pretty sure that's worth a bi-yearly haircut.

Re: Don’t Expect A Skies Of Arcadia Port Or Sequel Anytime Soon

Seacliff

I partially disagree with Kodama. The game is one of the best on the Dreamcast, but it bogged down but a handful of issues I think it really deserves to have fixed. Otherwise I kind of fear it will fall further into obscurity than it already is.

Faster paced battles and adjustment to encounter rates would be great in a new release. Expanded story scenes and character arcs alongside it would also be great.

Oh well... I guess Sega has other RPGs they rather use now that they own Atlus.

Re: Pokémon Sword & Shield Are Being Developed With A Focus On Switch's Handheld Mode

Seacliff

@Ludovsky I know you are setting this up to be a big task, but that didn't stop smaller studios from doing the same exact thing with Digimon: Cyber Stealth, Persona 5 and Yokai Watch 4, which all features hundreds of collectible monsters.

They could also reuse animations from Battle Revolution. That's nearly 500 Pokemon done for them already.

Why are we holding Pokemon to this lower standard?
